E
very year, the Dallas Arboretum’s festivals
become more imaginative and beautiful,
and this fall is no exception. Autumn at the
Arboretum, proudly sponsored by Alliance
Data and Texas Instruments, is one of “America’s
Best Pumpkin Festivals,” according to Fodor’s Travel.
The highlight is the nationally acclaimed Pumpkin
Village—unique in the world—where you’ll see several
pumpkin houses, a pumpkin patch, Cinderella’s
carriage and plenty of photo opportunities. Experience
the dynamic colors of fall in the 66-acre garden with
150,000 fall flowers and more than 75,000 pumpkins,
gourds and squash. Autumn at the Arboretum
has become the ultimate family destination in the
Southwest during the fall months.
In November and December, join us as we celebrate
Holiday at the Arboretum featuring the return of The
12 Days of Christmas and The Artistry of the Nativity
exhibits. The latter display can be enjoyed in the lavishly
decorated, historic DeGolyer House, along with Holiday
Tea. New this year for the Holiday festival are the addition
of 500,000 Christmas lights, making The 12 Days of
Christmas at Night experience still more magical. Again
this year, Santa and his reindeer will visit with children
throughout the holiday season. Be sure to shop at the
Hoffman Family Gift Store for those on your list.

Etiquette
Keeping the gardens beautiful and
safe for our guests
•Pets are prohibited in the gardens. Licensed,
assistance animals being used by disabled individuals are permitted.
• To protect the plant collections, active sports and games are not permitted. Prohibited games and activities include, but are not limited to: kites, Frisbees, egg hunts, roller skating, footballs, baseballs and soccer balls.
• Please do not stand in or walk in garden beds or climb trees or shrubs. Do not pick flowers.
Do not take or harm any of the wildlife.
This includes feeding squirrels.
• Bicycles are not allowed in the garden. There are
secured, designated bicycle stands in the parking
lot. Please inquire with the parking attendants for directions.
• Please do not play in the water features.
• All outdoor flames, including candles, are prohibited.
• Balloons are not allowed.
• Amplified music or noise-making devices are not permitted, unless pre-approved by the Arboretum.
• No one is permitted to change clothes in the public restrooms. Brides and Quinceaneras must come already dressed for photo shoots, or rent our designated changing room.
• The Dallas Arboretum is a smoke-free garden This includes vaping and e-cigarettes.
• The Dallas Arboretum honors discounts on our website only.

• Due to space limitations on walkways, only strollers and wheelchairs are permitted. Wagons and wheeled carriers, personal or rented, are
not permitted.
• Bridal and Quinceanera photo shoots are not allowed in the Children’s Adventure Garden. Personal photography with cell phones and cameras are permitted, however tripods and professional photography equipment are not permitted.
• Food purchased or brought into the garden is allowed only in specified picnic area.
• Children under 16 years of age must be accompanied by an adult.

GARDENING TIPS
GARDEN TIPS FOR SEPTEMBER
• Plant annual color, such as mums, marigolds and
ornamental peppers to add seasonal interest to the
autumn garden.
• Deadhead spent rose flowers to keep shrubs blooming
throughout the season. Now is the time to plant new
rose shrubs.
• In the vegetable garden, plant cool-season veggies,
such as carrots, cauliflower, broccoli, cabbage, lettuce
and mustards to be harvested through the fall and
winter months.
• Start planting trees, shrubs and perennials as cooler
autumn temperatures will help plants establish roots
before winter.
GARDEN TIPS FOR OCTOBER
• Start planning your purchase of pre-chilled, springblooming bulbs, like tulips, daffodils and hyacinths.
• Start planting cool-season annuals, such as pansies,
ornamental kale and snapdragons.
• Plant herbs like cilantro and parsley now for
harvesting through the fall and winter months.
• Keep newly planted trees, shrubs, perennials and
seasonal color watered to help them establish.
GARDEN TIPS FOR NOVEMBER
• Continue planting trees and shrubs now while they
are becoming dormant so they can establish roots
during winter. An application of root stimulator will
help get them started.
• Transplant trees and shrubs in your landscape
now. Give them a large enough root ball when
transplanting to avoid root damage.
• Dig and divide spring blooming perennials now so
their roots can get established before spring. Prune
back fall-blooming perennials to produce healthy,
bushy plants next spring.
• Plant narcissus and pre-chilled tulips toward the
end of the month. Plant pansies, dianthus, kale and
other winter annuals, as well as cool-season veggies
such as broccoli and cabbage. Fertilize annual color
with a complete, water-soluble fertilizer. Mulch new
plantings to help retain moisture and insulate roots
against cold temperatures.

Pumpkin Festivals”

W
ith the welcome change of
seasons comes one of the most
anticipated events – Autumn
at the Arboretum, which kicks
off September 19 with the transformation of
the garden set ablaze with the spectacular
color palette of fall. With more than 75,000
traditional pumpkins, gourds and numerous
other varieties of squash intermingled with the
colorful array of fall foliage, the horticulture
department pulls out all the stops to ensure
every part of the garden is dressed in its best
autumn glory.
The highlight of the festival is the nationally
acclaimed Pumpkin Village. With a recordbreaking number for this display in 2015,
it was only fitting to recreate an Old Texas
Town in Pecan Grove – everything is bigger in
Texas! Returning is Cinderella’s Carriage along
with thousands of pumpkins, hay bales and
cornstalks. In Texan measurements, that’s
nearly enough pumpkins and gourds to fill
every seat in Cowboys Stadium, and enough
ears of corn to reach to the top of Reunion
Tower if stacked end to end twice!
The Tom Thumb Pumpkin Patch has the
perfect pumpkin to carve into your best jacko’-lantern. With thousands to choose from,
you’re sure to find just the right shape and
size. A multitude of other activities will also
be available on weekdays and weekends
throughout the festival, along with special
events such as the Eddie Coker Columbus
Day concerts and trick-or-treating during
Family Fun Weekend.

Dallas! The fall series of Cool Thursdays
Concerts at the Arboretum kicks off
September 3 and promises nine weeks
of exceptional musical entertainment,
beautiful scenery and an outing fun for
all ages. From the series opening on the
Martin Rutchik Concert Stage & Lawn
with China Grove, the Doobie Brothers
All Star Tribute Band, to the finale on
October 29 with ever-popular Emerald
City, season subscription holders won’t

oliday at the Arboretum has been a muchanticipated and long-treasured tradition for many
of our guests. This year will be unlike any other,
with the return of Dallas’ most magnificent outdoor
display, The 12 Days of Christmas and the ever-popular and
expanded The Artistry of the Nativity at the DeGolyer House.
The 12 Days of Christmas collection of original, threedimensional, Victorian gazebos are filled with the charming
characters made famous in the old carol. Each of the displays
has been created with the careful attention to design
and beauty which has become the hallmark of the Dallas
Arboretum. Towering more than 25 feet, life-size vignettes
feature characters leaping, dancing and spinning in opulent
glass-enclosed music-boxed-styled gazebos. Running
November 8-January 3, the lavish display will be viewable
during the day as well as special evening openings.
NEW!
Beginning in November, the gardens will sparkle with
the newest addition of more than 500,000 holiday lights
trimming the architecture of the estates and enveloping the
trees overhead. For six weeks only, walkways lit with the soft
glow of the holidays will take visitors through the path of the
extravagant gazebos, to savory stations of candied chestnuts
and hot chocolate, and live performers placed throughout
the gardens.
A holiday experience unlike any other in North Texas, this
not-to-be-missed display will have your family and out-oftown visitors marveling at every turn.
In special celebration of the holidays, the DeGolyer House
will be open for specially themed dinners and evening viewings
of the interior holiday display on Wednesday evenings.
Advanced purchase tickets for Holiday at the Arboretum
evenings are recommended.
Kids will be thrilled to know that Santa has graciously
agreed to join us during breaks from his workshop for special
visits on weekend afternoons beginning Thanksgiving weekend,
along with live appearances from Dancer, Prancer and
company. And the festivities wouldn’t be complete without the
right refreshments to go along - a menu of traditional holiday
favorites, such as hot chocolate, warmed nuts, eggnog, cider
and hot-toddies, will all be offered at festive snack bars.
A visit to the DeGolyer House is a must with the return of
The Artistry of the Nativity exhibit, featuring the Ray Harrington
Collection and the return of George Dvorsky’s personal
collection of hundreds of nativities, collected from multiple
continents over his many years of travel as a Broadway and
theater actor. The home will be elegantly decorated with more
than a dozen Christmas trees, yards of festive ribbon and
thousands of carefully selected artisanal ornaments.

Pollinators
Hummingbirds, bees and butterflies
busily buzz through our beautiful garden
transferring pollen from one flower
to the next, aiding the production of
stunning flowers and colorful fruits. Our
Moody Oasis is designed specifically
to attract these native pollinators; the
most prized being the Monarch Butterfly.
In the last decade, there has been an
alarming decrease in the population of
many pollinators, including the Monarch
butterfly. But wait! Organizations and
individuals all over North America are
working to reverse this trend and the
Dallas Arboretum is a major part of that
effort. In April, the Rory Meyers Children’s
Adventure Garden was recognized as a
Certified Monarch Waystation. In the fall,
the garden hosts thousands of visiting
Monarchs making one last stop on their
migration to Mexico. Join us in welcoming
the Monarch Butterflies as they sprinkle
our garden with their splendor, and look
for our exciting and informative pollinator
programs all season long.

up for educational opportunities to enhance
your students’ enthusiasm of the world around
them. The garden offers learning galleries
with tailored curriculum to meet the Texas
Education Knowledge and Skills (TEKS) and
Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS).
Come explore and learn how amazing nature is
by delving into the biology, chemistry and physics
of life and earth science. From K-8, our handson, inquiry-based programs provide young minds
with new horizons to satisfy their curiosities.
How do plants adapt to stressful environments?
How does a tadpole become a frog? What do
butterflies and birds have in common? Why is

Fall Happenings at the
Hoffman Family Gift Store

pumpkin patch. Select orange
pumpkins, small squash and

located directly across from Pecan Grove
or at the gift store.
Jeff Krause, owner and designer of
Round Top Collection, will sign his yard
art work from 9am-4pm on Saturday,
October 3. Jeff ’s metal pumpkin art faces
are an Arboretum favorite. The reusable
metal art pieces are easy to insert
into pumpkins and make decorating
pumpkins quick, fun and easy.
Jewelry designer Martha Lee will
host a trunk show with one-of-a-kind
necklaces and earrings from 12-4pm
Saturday, October 10. Using only
the finest of materials, Martha Lee’s
creations are truly treasures.
Interior designer Betty Lou Phillips
will be signing copies of her book The
Night Before Christmas in Texas from
1-3pm on Saturday, November 7. Betty is
an award-winning author of more than
a dozen books on French and Italian
design and has appeared on The Oprah
Winfrey Show.
The Family Place Partners Card is
currently on sale and can be used in the
gift store from October 30-November
8. A 20% discount will be applied to
any purchase with the card. This may
not be used in conjunction with any

The race course was at scenic White Rock Lake and ended on the lawn of the Alex Camp
