We love pets. As a Captain and a helicopter pilot in the U.S. Army, I was shot down three times in Viet Nam and earned the Distinguished Flying Cross for heroism. Jan was trained as a medical technician. We could have spent our lives as a high paid pilot and a medical professional. We chose this life because we love working with dogs ( and nice cats) We have been involved with them as a profession since 1972. We were the first to introduce Science Diet, Eukanuba, Iams, Pro-Plan, Nutro, and Bil Jac to this area. We attended teaching seminars by the experts that developed these foods. Other than Bil Jac>> they are not the same foods or companies they were when we introduced them years ago! Hills Science Diet is now Colgate Palmolive Science Diet The first thing Colgate did after purchasing Science Diet was to advertise that it is now made with real chicken. They replaced chicken meal with real chicken meat, leading you and I to believe this was a good thing. You, the consumer and guardian of your pets, were not informed that one of the AAFCO rules is; you can weigh the chicken before it is added to the food. Chicken is 70 to 80 % moisture so there is actually 70 to 80 % less dried chicken (meal) in the dry food formula than if they used chicken meal as the first ingredient and obviously there is no wet chicken floating around in the bag. Eukanuba and Iams are now owned by Proctor and Gamble. Eukanuba used to be a great product. The Iams company made Eukanuba and developed Iams as a less expensive product line. The quality control in the Iams plant was very high. These products, as far as I know, are now farmed out to feed mills around the world to make. Purina is now owned by Nestle candy Bar Co. and you can just read the ingredients list of Pro Plan and ONE to understand profit is what it is all about. Bil Jac is still family owned Page 11 11 Your pet Page professionals Page 11 The foods Happy Tails prefers Natures Variety “Prairie Brand”: (dog and cat formulas) This is the best line pet foods pet. Your pet will love you for bringing home any of their reasonably priced products. Merrick canned food and treats: (dog and cat formulas) Ranked as the best pet food by The Glycemic Research Institute. Prevention of diabetes, arthritis, premature aging, and the pets love it. Bring home Grammy's Pot Pie. It is good enough for you to eat Pinnacle: (canine) Holistic canned and dry, high quality trout, sweet potato, chicken, lamb, oatmeal, probiotics etc BilJac: (dog and cat formulas) (a) Excellent, vary palatable softer dry formula, fresh chicken, baked in a unique patented vacuum process at low temperatures. Jan and I bred and finished many AKC Champions on this food combined with their (b) raw frozen diet. Since 1947, one of the most popular foods on the show circuit and with professional trainers. Great, stuff that dogs love. Eddie on the TV show Frasier eats it as do all the Disney movie dogs. Chicken Soup for the Pet Lovers Soul: (dog and cat) This is probably the best buy in pet food anywhere with real meat proteins and a price below the so called big premiums . Far superior to (Science Diet, Iams, Eukanuba, Nutro, Pro Plan, etc.) Premium Edge: (dog and cat) Single protein source formulas at a great value price. Skin and Coat is a salmon based formula with Canola oil., Lamb and Rice and Veggies, Chicken and Rice and Veggies . ( excellent price point and real bargains based on cost of ingredients.) Far superior to the heavily marketed Premiums Diamond Naturals: Chicken, lamb, beef, large breed small breed . Economical purchase price, but still meets our qualifications of no by product meals, wheat, corn or soy. Your pet professionals Page 10 • CORN SYRUP, HIGH FRUCTOSE SYRUP, SUGAR, are all completely unnecessary ingredients in pet food and are there only to entice your dog to eat the product. (diabetes, obesity, nervousness, cataracts, tooth decay, arthritis, and allergies. Pets can get addicted to foods containing sugar and it can take tremendous effort to make them eat healthier food) • DYES (coloring agents): are there only to entice you to believe you are feeding something other than what it actually is. Your dog and cat does not care about color or if it is shaped like t-bone. They may go for certain kibbles and bits of food because of the amount of sugar in it. • WHEAT FLOUR: Flour together with fine particles of the bran and germ and the “offal from the tail of the mill” This product must be obtained in the usual process of commercial milling and must not contain more than 1.5 % crude fiber. “tail of the mill” is the sweepings of leftovers after a week or so of processing. Read the ingredients list!! Dry Kibble Page 3 Featuring Canned Highest quality and quantity meat 95 % real meat protein source of any dry dog or cat foods Raw frozen Proteins Meat diet and raw bones for healthy gums and teeth “The Whole Dog Journal”s best of the best line of pet foods WHEAT MIDDLINGS: Coarse and fine particles of wheat bran and fine particles of wheat shorts, wheat germ, wheat flour, and offal from the “tail of the mill” Who answers to who in the pet food industry?? Are profits for the huge multi nationals more important than your pets health. These companies think so. Nestle Candy Bar co. owns Alpo, Fancy Feast, Friskies, Mighty Dog, Purina ONE, Purina Pro Plan, Dog Chow, Hi-Pro, Moist N Meaty. “NEW ” Holistic canine and feline formulas featuring trout, duck, chicken, sweet potato etc. Try it if you are having allergy problems, Far superior to Natural Balance Probably the most product for the least amount of money. Chicken, turkey, whole grains and vegetables, herbs etc. Dry and an excellent, canned diet Del Monte : owns 9 lives, Gravy Train, Kibbles n Bits, Natures Recipe Amore, Milk Bone Colgate Palmolive: owns Hills Science Diet Proctor and Gamble: owns Eukanuba and Iams Mars Candy Bar Co. owns Kal Kan, Meal Time, Pedigree, Sheba, Waltham (Royal Canin), Cesar, Happy Tails carries foods that are made by Independent, wholly owned companies that are concerned with providing the best products for your pet. The giant corporations have left the door wide open with their greed and that is why you see all these independent companies making a good product and a good profit. That is what the USA is supposed to be all about. Do you realize that there are twice as many corporate lobbyists in Washington DC now than there was just 5 years ago and there were too many 5 years ago. A unique vacuum baking process at very low temperature makes this one of the most palatable formulas on the market. Also a good, inexpensive raw frozen product. Family owned since 1947. This is what “Eddie” on Fraser and most of your ‘Pet Actors” eat. Reasonably priced great Skin and Coat formula with salmon and salmon meal as the protein source and canola oil as the fat source. Great product for the money. Also Lamb protein formula and a Chicken protein formula Diamond Naturals whole meat protein meal, no corn, no soy , no wheat, no gluten, all natural and priced to compete with the heavily advertised discount hose brands. Bill McQuade. Unique canned meats. Including Kosher made products. Page 4 Page 9 Your pet professionals • RICE FLOUR: Highly refined flour. Most vitamins have been leached out n processing • RICE GLUTEN: dried residue after removal of the starch, germ, and separation of the bran. Poorly digestible protein source. Biologic value 50% less than chicken. • CHICKEN BY-PRODUCT MEAL: Consists of dry ground, rendered, clean parts of the carcass of slaughtered chickens such as necks, feet, undeveloped eggs, and intestines exclusive of feathers except as such might occur unavoidably in good processing practices. Cheap, inconsistent quality and poor nutritional value. • CORN or WHEAT GLUTEN MEAL: the dried residue from corn after the removal of the larger part of the starch and germ and the separation of the bran by the process employed in wet milling manufacture of corn starch and syrup or by enzymatic treatment of the endosperm. Inexpensive by product of human food processing that contains some protein but mainly serves to bind food together. Hard to digest and should not rank high in the ingredients list of a quality product. High allergen source • MEAT AND BONE MEAL: same as beef & bone only unidentifiable source i.e. Everything said in animal fat description plus this ingredient can include pus, cancerous and decomposed tissue. • MEAT MEAL: rendered product from (unidentifiable) mammal tissues, exclusive of blood, hair, hoof, horn, hide trimmings, manure, stomach and rumen contents except as such shall occur in good factory practices. I would question “good factory practices” when processing 500,000 tons of left-overs. • MEAT BY-PRODUCT: non rendered clean parts, other than meat, derived from slaughtered mammals. It includes but is not limited to, lungs, spleen, kidneys, brain, livers, blood, bone, partially defatted low temperature fatty tissue and stomachs and intestines freed of their contents. Remember meat means unidentifiable mammal!! • MILL RUN OR MIDDLINS : can be wheat, rice, etc. fine particles of flour, bran etc. the waste from the tail of the mill from commercial flour milling. Flour sweepings. • PEANUT HULLS: outer hull of the peanut. Pure filler, no nutrient value and concerns over fungicides that soak into the shell as the peanut is growing. • PROPYLENE GLYCOL: Used in anti-freeze, hydraulics, and as humectant's in semi most kibbles to keep it from drying out. Should not be eaten daily as part of your pets diet. Sweet tasting, animals love it • SOYBEAN MEAL: the product obtained by grinding the flakes which remain after removal of most of the oil from soybeans by a solvent or mechanical extraction process.. Poor quality protein filler used to boost the protein content of low quality pet foods. Has a biologic value less than 50% of chicken meal. Carnivores need meat!! I believe Dogs and Cats are carnivores. Other authorities May believe that dogs are omnivores. Our canine friends learned to scavenge as they became domesticated, so they will eat just about anything people eat, but their DNA is the same as a wolf and a wolf is definitely considered a carnivore. If your pet was sitting in the middle of a corn, wheat, soybean, rice etc field and starving, he still would not recognize these plants as a food source. Dry kibble has to have a starch source as binder, but it should not be the main nutritional source for your pet. Dogs and cats are not designed to digest excessive amounts of poorly processed grains and grain fractions (gluten, bran, middlings, flour etc). They definitely do not need the excessive carbohydrates and calories from grain sources. Our mouths contain enzymes that start the digestive process. Our teeth are designed to grind and chew. Your pets teeth are designed to rip and tear and crush and their mouth does not contain predigestive enzymes. Too much grain and worse yet, grain fractions from leftover human food processing, cause skin problems, skin allergies, digestive disorders, pancreatitis, diabetes, runny eyes, ear infections, kidney problems and early aging and death. Also when everyone blames the dog for passing gas, please blame the grain based dog food instead! By-product meals are far less desirable in pet food than whole meat and quality meat meal. Some by-product in a lower priced food should be expected and it should be identifiable (ie. Chicken, beef etc byproduct meal instead of animal or meat by-product meal. ) A specific sourced by-product meal is still a better source of nutrients and protein than grains, flours and grain glutens, but approximately half as digestible as whole meats and whole meat meals, like chicken, beef, lamb, etc. Even though the by-product or grain based bag or can may be cheaper to purchase, your pet will need to eat a lot more of it. The amount of nutrition is what you are purchasing not the size of the bag or can. More expensive high quality food is more nutrient dense and usually less expensive to feed. Your pet professionals Page 8 Your pet professionals INGREDIENTS LIST: LEFTOVERS FROM THE HUMAN Read the ingredients list!! Page 5 What are you feeding your pet? PROCESSING INDUSTRY IN YOUR PETS FOOD definitions are per A.A.F.C.O. Association of Animal Feed Control Officials (Feed industry officials and federal officials in bed together) italics are the authors • ANIMAL FAT: Obtained from the tissues of mammals and/or poultry in the commercial processes of rendering or extracting. Any kind of animal can be included including dead, diseased, dying or disabled prior to slaughter, goats, pigs, horses rats, road kill, euthanized cats and dogs, restaurant and supermarket refuse and used grease. Inferior to chicken fat and/or vegetable oils • ANIMAL DIGEST: material which results from chemical and/or enzymatic hydrolysis of clean and undecomposed animal tissue. The animal tissues used shall be exclusive of hair, horns, teeth, hooves, and feathers except in such trace amounts as might occur unavoidably in good factory processes. A broth composed of unknown parts of unknown animals as in animal fat, above. Used as flavor source • BEEF TALLOW: Fat with titer above 40 degrees Celsius, obtained from the tissues of cattle in the commercial process of rendering. Highly palatable, very cheap, poorly digestible and very low in lineolic acid. Inferior product compared to chicken fat or quality vegetable oils. • BEEF & BONE MEAL: the rendered product from beef tissues, including bone, exclusive of any added blood, hair, hoof, horn, hide trimmings, manure, stomach and rumen contents except in such amounts as may occur unavoidably in processing practices. Byproduct made from beef parts not suitable for human consumption. This is an inexpensive low quality ingredient used to boost the protein percentage. • BEET PULP: Dried residue from processed sugar beets. Source of fiber and stool hardener. Controversial ingredient, believed to contribute to excessive red eye staining. No nutrient value. • BREWERS RICE: The small (5/164s of an inch) milled fragments that have been separated from the larger kernels of milled rice. “dust” “floor sweepings”, from rice. Cheap, cheap, very low nutritional value, filler • RICE BRAN: Outer coating of rice kernel. Cheap, considered to be filler by most sources. Little nutrient value You probably do not know because no one ever told you to read the ingredients list. The innocuous small print hidden somewhere on the bag, can, or pouch is actually the most important information on the container. It is what your pet is actually putting into his body. The snake oil salesman has been turned loose on us. Glamorous, colorful, pictures and emotional statements on the label mean nothing. It is called freedom of speech; there is no such thing as truth in advertising. Don’t like that, then write or call your Congressman or Senator; good luck and I hope you have donated as much to his or her campaign as the Pet Food Institute (industry lobbyists) have. Lets take Pedigree Complete Nutrition for Adults-TM, Mars Candy Bar Co. Meaty Chunks with Rice & Vegetables for example. Obviously they think you feel that meaty chunks, rice and vegetables are important to your dogs health or they would not put it on the label in such big letters. They want you to believe that is what you are buying. Now go to the ingredients label. Corn, meat & bone meal, rice, chicken-by-product meal, corn gluten meal, animal fat, (real cheap stuff, see definitions) BHA/BHT, poultry flavor, ground peas, wheat mill run, salt, potassium chloride, wheat flour, caramel color, carrot powder, wheat gluten There is a very good chance the big name brand dog or cat food you are feeding your pet is more than likely harming his or her health. Bad health may be presenting right now in the form of diabetes, allergies, skin problems, ear infections, irritable bowel syndrome, pancreatitis, runny eye staining, obesity, kidney and urinary tract problems, early aging, or you will see these problems in the future as your pet ages. Dogs and cats must have real meat and veggies for long term good health. My dogs and cats have lived an average of seventeen years up to twenty years and in good health. Far too many of our customers pets are presenting health problems while young and at ten to twelve years of age are old and in poor health and people think it is a miracle when their dog or cat reaches fifteen. It is the diet. Read the ingredients or trust us. We have read the ingredients list!! We know what the terms mean!! We know what the rules are!! Did you know that the word “with” on the label, means there only has to be 3 % of that item in the food and if the word “flavor” is present, there does not have to be any of the product in the bag. Your pet professionals Page 6 Read the ingredients list!! Page 7 The following is true anecdote. One of my favorite examples of deceptive advertising for a gullible public is “Cesar Select dinners for dogs”. “Sophisticated food for sophisticated dogs”. You have seen the advertisements on TV. The butler is delivering the tray with “Cesar” dog food to the family “Westie” and the guests are tempted to sneak a bite. You go the store and see that the little 3.5 oz tray of (notice I do not call it food) product for $.79 says “Cesar Select Dinners, Food for Small Dogs with top sirloin flavor in sauce”. Ingredients list: Water, beef by products, meat by products, liver, poultry by products, beef, caramel coloring etc. No top sirloin here. The key word is flavor. The twentieth ingredient by weight is top sirloin flavor but the actual food is made up of mostly unidentifiable by products. If the word “ flavor” is used there does not have to be any top sirloin in the product. or “Cesar Select Dinners with Lamb in Meaty Juices”, or “with Turkey in Meaty juices.” Ingredients list: water, beef by products, liver, meat by products, poultry by products, lamb. The key word here is “with”. The rules are that there has to be at least 3 % lamb in the product if it says “with.” Of course the other thing of note is the product is almost identical to the “top sirloin”. In fact all thirteen products of “Cesar” are just about identical, even though they use terms like Pork Tenderloin, Duck, Grilled chicken etc. I guarantee you they put much more money in advertising and packaging than there is in the food. By the way remember terms like meat, animal etc. means the ingredient is unidentifiable. Even road kill is identifiable for at least a couple of days. I want to know what my pet is eating. Cesar sent us 96 cans of free product to entice us to promote it. We tossed it in the dumpster. OOOOoooh, by the way, “Cesar Select Dinners for Small Dogs” is owned by Mars Candy Bar Co.. Real experts in nutrition; do you really believe their first concern is your pets health? Or do you think it is about maximizing profit? Did you do the math on Cesars. An equivalent 14 oz can of product would cost $3.16. We carry some wonderful whole meat foods that cost less than that. Another example, dry food: Here is the magic word “Kibbles N Bits Original TM”” Savory chicken and beef flavor. Ingredients list: corn, soybean meal, ground wheat flour, beef and bone meal, animal fat, corn syrup, wheat middlings, water, animal digest, propolyne glycol, salt, hydrochloric acid etc. This is the flavor In the Kibbles N antifreeze Bits TM dancing dog commercial, the dog is so excited he dances because he thinks he is going eat a chicken dinner just like his family, out of his bag of dog food.. He actually likes it because of the corn syrup and animal fat. He will never find the chicken. Clean swimming pools and concrete When our dog trainer Kris Minkle came to work for us, she had been feeding her two German Shepherds Science Diet for there entire life. She worked at a prominent German Shepherd kennel in California and the owners fed Science Diet believing it to be the best food for their dogs. My first reaction when seeing Rena and Tess was maybe I made a mistake hiring Kris because her dogs did not appear to be in good shape. Tess, a black Shepherd had chewed up looking ears and bare spots on her nose and her coat was dull and skin flaky and they shed profusely. Neither dog had a healthy glow about them and they both had poor muscle tone and had pot bellies. When Kris changed diets (she now feeds Natures Variety “Prairie”, dry, canned, and frozen meat diets). Her dogs coats began to shine, the dry flaky skin went away, they lost the pot bellies and gained 4 to 5 pounds of weight with vastly improved muscle tone and stamina. She fed 5 cups of Science Diet and now only feeds 1 1/2 cups of dry and 1/2 of a can of meat daily Science Diet Orignal: First 10 ingredients Chicken, corn, sorghum, wheat, chicken byproduct meal, soybean meal, animal fat (13%), corn gluten meal, brewers rice, chicken liver flavor.
