FROM THE DESK OF
PRESIDENT
Dear Readers and Printer Friends,
Greetings!
Thanks for your continued support and blessings. Through this note I wish to give you an
update of the activities since the last edition.
On March 3rd, I attended the Printer’s Day event organized by MMS. Sh. Subhash Desai, the
Minister of Industries of Maharashtra felicitated Mr. Gautam Pai of the Manipal Group. He was
the youngest ever recipient of the Lifetime Achievement award from Mumbai Mudrak Sangh on
this occasion.
After this event, I attended ‘Imprint- 2015’, a National level technical symposium organized by
the Anna University at Chennai on March 13th, 2015 as the Chief Guest. Anna University’s
Imprint program was attended by students from all over India who participated in various activities. I also went to the SIGA
Polytechnic College and I was impressed to see such a well equipped institute with their own production department which
has almost around six to seven printing machines where the children do actual production in their unit and after the printing
they have the complete post production facility including section sewing. Then, I visited the Institute of Printing Technology
run by Govt. During this visit, our affiliate MPLA’s Office Bearers felicitated us.
In the last two months, I and Office Bearers were working towards the progress and success of our forthcoming major events –
NAEP 2015 and PAMEX 2015. For the NAEP, we interacted with the host association to expedite and crystallize the
preparations for this event which is clubbed with the GC meeting and Elections for the year 2015-16. For PAMEX, we
attempted to contact and influence foreign exhibitors and Machine & Allied manufacturers to participate in this flagship
event of AIFMP.
We also focused on submitting various representations to the relevant Ministry officials to highlight various issues being
faced by the Printing Fraternity and to impress upon the Govt. as to how our industry can contribute to the Honb’le Prime
Minister’s campaign of ‘MAKE IN INDIA’. For this, the efforts of our Chairman-Govt. Relations, Mr. V.K Jain are
commendable.
The other two significant developments are:
1) Start of the Printech Park project. The plans for building construction have been submitted to the Govt. authorities and the
requisite fees has been paid. We are also exploring the possibilities of starting an ‘AIFMP University’ – A university of
Printing, Packaging and Graphic Art Technologies
2) We have finally signed the agreement with CRISIL for Construction Of Printing Cost Indexes. This is a landmark decision
which will be beneficial to all printer friends.
Friends, the second GC meeting in my tenure was held in Darjeeling on the 3rd and 4th April 2015. This meeting was organized
by the West Bengal Master Printers Association. I wish to thank the WBMPA for organizing this meeting at this exciting hill
station where the members and their families enjoyed the scenic locations in Darjeeling and Sikkim.
The CRISIL agreement was signed at Darjeeling during the 226th GC meeting.
So, that’s all from me at this time. Will catch up with you in the next edition!
Till then, enjoy reading and enjoy printing!
Very Truly Yours,
Dev Nair

FROM THE DESK OF
EDITOR
Dear Patrons & Readers,
Continuing from the last issue, first of all I wish to thank you all for your continued support to this
Journal. At AIFMP, we are constantly striving to enhance the readership and quality of this
publication.
Before I start with the AIFMP activities and events, I want to pay homage to Late Shri KT Chary
who was a real Doyen of the Printing Technology education and a true Living Legend who has left
behind an indelible impression on the hearts of all his students, friends and the entire printing
fraternity.
His pious soul may rest in peace.
My heart also goes out to the thousands of people who lost their lives in the recent earthquakes in
Nepal. I sincerely appeal to all to extend the best possible help to the survivors through donations in cash or kind. I am
sure that with the support from India and other nations, things will be in control soon.
As they say, life goes on…so I must share with you that the Federation is earnestly striving to submit and resolve the various
issues and problems faced by the printing community. The Federation has been submitting various representations to the
relevant Ministries to consider the suggestions/ changes/ improvements proposed by the AIFMP as an apex body of
printers. The representations made to the Government have started yielding results now. One such example is exemption
of the printing machinery from the Ban imposed on import of used/ more than 5 years old machinery and equipment.
I am eagerly looking forward to our important event 10 NAEP which is scheduled to be hosted in Chennai in the month of
September 2015. This is one of flagship events which is eagerly awaited by the printers, not in India but from other parts of the
world. I request every Affiliate association in the country to ensure that its members send in their entries to showcase their
excellence in the field of printing at this coveted award ceremony. This grand show will be hosted at the ‘Leela Palace hotel’
and the special invitees include several eminent personalities and dignitaries who will grace the occasion.
th
December 2015 will witness the flagship event of AIFMP, the 10th PAMEX, 2015. The show this year should be quite promising
with better participation from Chinese and European manufacturers and suppliers. Based on the commitments received so
far, we expect this year’s PAMEX to surpass all previous editions in terms of sq. metres of Stand Space. We also expect that
this year’s show will be managed in a much better and professional manner. The expected footfall is also much higher because
the event is to be hosted in Mumbai. So I would request the prospective participants to contact us for more details.
I wish to share with you that the recent visit of a sizeable number of our members to the two Print-Packaging exhibitions in
China under AIFMP’s banner was really fruitful, meaningful and encouraging. At both these exhibitions, AIFMP was
allotted a stall and India Day was celebrated with great fervor at both the exhibitions. It was a great platform to enhance the
Sino-Indian trade ties in the area of printing. The shows witnessed B2B exchanges between the businessmen of the two
countries and some MOUs for mutual cooperation were signed and initiated. This visit will surely go a long way in
promotion of the 10th PAMEX in December at Mumbai.
Dear Friends, this Journal is your own publication – By the printers, Of the printers and For the printers. So, I earnestly request
you to contribute to the best of your ability to support, promote and make this publication more meaningful and useful. I look
forward to your advertisements, articles, features, technical reviews, regional news briefs and subscriptions to this
Journal.

V
isiting China is always like a pilgrimage for any printer, because it is
the birthplace of the earliest known printing and paper. This year the
visit was more significant because of the group visit under the

The Government of India last year launched the ‘Make in India’ campaign
under which 25 key sectors have been identified for investments, including
Printing. A number of top Chinese companies have already set up their units in
India. There is still tremendous scope for trade and economic cooperation
between our two countries and Printing sector is surely one of the potential
sectors, he said.
There is potential for enhanced exchanges between the two countries,
including investments in the sector. The India Day celebration today is certain
to strengthen these exchanges through B2B meetings between the businessmen
of the two countries seeking more avenues of cooperation and sharing of
expertise. Such exchanges are certain to lead to enhanced bilateral trade and
investment in the printing and allied sectors and help in technological
collaboration to bring about greater value-addition to the printing industry of both the countries, Shri T J Suresh added.
Giving details about the printing industry of India and AIFMP, Mr. Kamal Chopra, Chairman International Relations said,
Today is a very important day, not only because we are here to celebrate India Day. The day has more importance because it is
on this day that first printing on paper was ordered in China.
The Indian Printing Industry, growing at a rate of 12% per annum, comprises more than 250,000 printing companies. The
current annual turnover is more than INR 50,000 crores (USD 11 Billion). The industry has undergone a revolutionary change
in the last 15 years. In 1990, India initiated a process of reforms aimed at shedding protectionism and embracing liberalization
of the economy. Privatization was initiated with the aim of integrating the Indian economy with the world economy. This
change opened the doors for the Indian Print Industry to modernize, by investing in the latest of technology and machinery.
The advent of global brands, rising consumerism and growth of the pharmaceutical industry have seen an increase in the
scope for package printing. Giving an optimistic outlook of the industry, the package printing sector is growing at the annual
rate of 18 percent, commercial printing at a rate of 4 – 6 percent and digital printing at robust 30 percent.
All India Federation of Master Printers (AIFMP) is the apex body of Indian Printers. Representing 250,000 printing companies
AIFMP is the world’s largest ‘Printers’ Association’. India’s oldest exhibition of Printing machines and material – PAMEX is
organized by AIFMP. Next PAMEX is going to be held at Mumbai on 9-12 December, 2015. He invited Chinese manufacturers
to participate in the PAMEX for the mutual growth and benefit. He concluded his speech with the words: - India is a country
which has over the years learnt to evolve and maintain a unique unity amongst diversity. It has become an inspirational
model and an example to emulate for every region in the world. India
supports a social form of economic development and encourages a
model of growth with equity. We are conscious of the need for growth
to respect the environment and make it sustainable for future
generations. Today’s India Day will pave a way for the unity of minds
of printers not only of both the countries, but the entire printing
community world over, he said.
During the afternoon on the same day, an agreement between China
Academy of Printing Technology (CAPT) and All India Federation
of Master Printers (AIFMP) was signed for mutual cooperation
where CAPT agreed to sell 2000 sqm of space to the Chinese
manufacturers for participating in the PAMEX to be organized by
AIFMP at Mumbai in the month of December this year.

member companies from 9 countries including China, India, Pakistan,

Malaysia, Sri Lanka, Thailand, Indonesia, Philippines and South Korea participated to
discuss the key points on the Global Print conference which was held on 8 April. Global
Print was attended by representatives from PICON, Komori, Japanese Printing Machines
Manufacturing Association (JPMA), VDMA (Germany), Swiss Graphic Arts Association
and IPAMA. Speaking at the forum of Global Print, Mr. K S Khurana, President IPAMA
emphasized on the fact that the Indian Printers are dependent on quality but expensive
machines from Europe and Japan for their needs. The cost of import was expensive with
the existing duty structures in the country. He advised manufacturers from Europe and
Japan along with Chinese machine manufacturers to explore production setups in India
itself to reap the benefit of the huge Indian market.
th
Sino Corrugated 2015 - Shanghai
The largest exhibition of the world so far as the Corrugated Carton is concerned was held
at Shanghai on 13-17 April, 2015. With more than 1500 visitors from India the exhibition
was visited by the delegates from more than 100 countries. With more than 600 international exhibitors, Sino Corrugated 2015
was spread over the area of 67000 sqm. The exhibition attracted more than 41000 visitors, 100+ media support and more than
70 domestic and International associations. Organized by the Reed Exhibitions, Shanghai Sino Corrugated is the largest
business platform for the global corrugated manufacturing industry. In 2015, this event not only showcased the latest
corrugated equipment and consumables on the market, but also brought together, under one roof, international buyers from
established and emerging economies with high-spending trade professionals, for brisk business.
India Day at Sino Corrugated
India Day was celebrated during this exhibition also on 15th of April by the Reed Exhibitions, supported by the AIFMP and
FCBM. With the presence of more than 200 delegates it proved to be the most successful India Day at Shanghai. Just to show
the strength and unity the India delegates assembled near entrance 3 to walk in a procession, with tri-colours in hand,
through the exhibition halls to reach the venue of India Day celebrations where Mr. Kamal Chopra, Chairman International
Relations, AIFMP was the moderator of the event. Welcoming the guests, Mr. Thomas Huang, Vice President of Reed
Exhibitions said, it is my privilege to welcome the Indian Delegation who are here in a large number, I am thankful to AIFMP
and FCBM for arranging group visit of Indian delegates. Packaging has a promising future. The ongoing prosperity of
commodity economy has brought higher requirements for the packaging print products in the market. Therefore package
printing becomes the most potential growth point in the printing industry and so attracts great attentions from the industry.
Speaking on the occasion, Mr. P S Shah, President FCBM, said
packaging is a growing sector in India and we are thrilled to see
the progress made by China in this field. Under ‘Make in India’
concept, I would like to request Chinese manufacturers to start
manufacturing printing and packaging machines in India
which will be beneficial for both – manufacture and buyer.
In his address Mr. Kamal Chopra, Chairman International

(AIFMP) is the apex body of Indian Printers. Representing
250,000 printing companies AIFMP is the world’s largest
‘Printers’ Association’. India’s oldest exhibition of Printing

invite the Chinese manufacturers to
participate in the PAMEX. This time it is
suggested to establish a separate pavilion
for Chinese Manufacturers with very
special rates. We also organize National
Awards for the Excellence in printing
which are considered to be the ‘Oscars’ of
the Printing Industry. Now efforts are
being made to give international flavour
to these awards. On the previous occasion
guest entries were invited from Europe
and Japan. This time we expect guest entries from China, Nepal, Pakistan and some more countries also.
In Print Education AIFMP is already collaborating with BIGC, only recently BIGC agreed for the free higher education for one
brilliant Indian student of printing. We have already signed MoU for student/teacher exchange with BIGC. Mr. Chopra
further said that, the printing industry in India is slowly progressing from the heavy machinery using industry to a more
software-centric business. The Indian printers are today equipped with the latest computer controlled printing machines and
flow lines for binding, while state-of-the-art digital technologies are used in pre-press. UV digital printing and inkjet
technology are also on the rise in India. The advent of global brands, rising consumerism and growth of the pharmaceutical
industry have seen an increase in the scope for package printing. Giving an optimistic outlook of the industry, the package
printing sector is growing at the annual rate of 18 percent, commercial printing at a rate of 4 – 6 percent and digital printing at
robust 30 percent.
The digital printing industry is seeing significant transformations with new technologies & applications providing costeffective and customized solutions. For the foreseeable future, offset and digital will not only co-exist, but will also
complement each other- with offset taking the medium-to-longer jobs and digital performing on short-to-medium run
lengths. The booming Indian economy, increasing consumerism, entry of global brands in the country and opening of the
sector to foreign investors are bound to offer growth opportunities to this industry.
Ms. Judie Liu, International Sales Manager, Reed Exhibition, while thanking the delegates said, AIFMP and FCBM are the
great source of inspiration for us and we are delighted for the support both the associations extended for the success of the
Sino Corrugated 2015 at Shanghai.
In his vote of thanks, Mr. R Suresh, former president AIFMP said, it is a golden day not only because India Day is being
celebrated here in Shanghai but also due to the fact that delegate from every corner of India is present in this hall, making it a
little India at Shanghai. I may tell, he said, it is the feeling of every Indian and it can be the foundation for the way of human
thinking on unity of minds. Therefore today’s India Day will pave a way for the unity of minds of printers not only of both the
countries, but the entire printing community world over. He thanked Reed
Exhibitions for organizing the event and also the delegates for joining in the
celebrations. Just to recognize their contributions for India Day celebrations,
mementos were presented, on the behalf of AIFMP, to Mr. Thomas Huang, Ms.
Judie Liu, Ms. Susie Zhang and Mr. Keith Ma.
Besides refreshments and drinks, Gifts to each and every delegate present on the
occasion were presented by the Reed Exhibitions. A grand lucky draw was also
held for Grand Prize (1) Coffee Machine, Second Prizes (2) Mini Bluetooth
Speaker and Third Prizes (3) Power Bank, all these prizes were also sponsored by
the Reed Exhibitions, Shanghai.

AIFMP EFFECT
Dear Members,
In the interest of the printing fraternity, AIFMP has initiated the action of representations to the relevant authorities
regarding:
1. The Age old Press Act of India which is affecting the printer friends adversely because of the onus of the content of the
books/ material printed at their respective presses.
2. AIFMP is in the process to lodge a complaint with the competent authorities and to submit an application to intervene in
the complaint lodged by SMPA, with regard to the frequent and constant increase in the paper prices. For this, we need
your support. Hence, we request to send paper prices for the last 3 years, especially the increase in prices of paper & paper
board.
3. CRISIL - The Federation has entered into an Agreement with CRISIL to develop Printing Cost Indexes in the interest of the
printing industry.
4. Data collection - The Federation has undertaken an ambitious project of collecting data of printers, PAN India. To collect
such data is utmost essential for our industry representations to the Government. It would also help to bring maximum
printers under the umbrella of the AIFMP.
Friends, your valuable suggestions and contributions are welcome. For any queries, please feel free to contact us.
As a result of Federation’s strong representations, the Government dropped the proposal to ban the import of second hand
machinery in printing segment. Given below, please find the extract from pages 47-48 of the Import Policy for Second Hand
Goods under heading 2.31 – Second Hand Goods which states that All other second hand capital goods other than (a) & (b)

AIFMP NEWS
AIFMP Export Committee
The current scenario of domestic market is very competitive where customer drives the pricing, add to this the volumes are
shrinking due to advent of digital printing. To further make matters difficult the internet and e-communication is a sword
hanging over our heads permanently.
In light of this what should we printers do? How do we increase our market share, volumes etc.? The logical answer is to
expand our horizon by broad basing our targeted verticals and entering newer markets and countries through exports.
Why should we export? The answer is simple as a nation we import more and export less which has created a huge difference
in our trade balance. To improve this, Government of India is providing major incentives to exporters. Another criticalpart in
favor of exports is the pricing advantage we get since most exports is in Dollars. In terms of technology most of us in our press
are using the latest technology.
For any company to start sales activities for exports certain preparation is required before we actually set out to meet
prospective customer in export markets. The preparation we need to do is to prepare the following:
1.
2.
3.
4.
Prepare a list of friends &relatives settled abroad
Get the schedule of exhibition &trade fairs for the verticals we are targeting
Make your company a member of organization like FIEO & EXIM etc.
Get schedule of buyer seller meet
Generally information about export market and prospective customer is easier through friends & relatives who have settled
abroad. Statistics shows that 30% of export transaction in the USA originated through friends & relatives. Another important
tool is building your export prospect base bycorrespondence through email. Response might be slow but it surely works.
However, we have to ensure that the communication is clear, professional and crisp. Whilst doing this we must ensure that
our database is kept relevant & updated at all times.
Information is the key to be successful, more so when doing the exports. The sources for gathering information would be:
1.
2.
3.
Export promotional council
Indian consulate abroad
EXIM publications
One must also try & find agents or brokers. This is a common practice abroad and there are various agents who buy print for
their clients. One must ensure all necessary homework is done before approaching the agents.
Exhibitions & trade shows are another very relevant source of lead generation. We must ensure that we have a list of
exhibition & trade shows that are connected to our clients business and industry and in the relevant country of your interest to
ensure that you are always aware of the market potential of these countries and are also aware of the local competition in
those markets. Please refer to the PPT for more information on trade shows etc.
Inward delegation is another critical tool for generating leads & prospects. Inward delegation is brought in by Chambers of
Commerce for e.g. if you are targeting South Africa for exports then do ensure that you are in a mailing list of Chambers of
Commerce in South Africa. This way you will always be aware of activities happening in South Africa through Chambers of
Commerce. And if they are bringing delegations to India you could possibly express your interest in hosting & meeting these
delegations. Similarly Chambers of Commerce do organise Buyer & Sellers meet which could also help generating more
prospects & leads. As a printer one stands to benefit a lot due to exports. Some of the key benefits of exports are
1.
2.
3.
You will be able to address & target bigger markets
Since the markets are bigger one would be able to generate more volumes
Exports will allow you to get better realisation of price ultimately leading to a healthier and attractive bottom line.
Since the Government has a lot of schemes to motivate manufacturers to export, one could avail these schemes and add to
overall profitability.

AIFMP President Boosts Print Education in Chennai
D
ev Nair, President of the All India Federation of the Master Printers
(AIFMP) spoke at three institutes in Chennai on 12 March.
Accompanying him at the Selation Institute of Graphic Arts (Don
Bosco), Anna University and IPT were Dr S Ganeshan, HOD Dr Rajeswari,
AIFMP Vice President K C Prakash, and students’ secretary Arun Kumar.
Nair reached out to the students when he said, “In college we spend 10% of
our time on studies; and 90% of our time on other things.” He advised the
students, “If you can change that to 20% & 80%, you can make a big
difference.”
After which he added, that these days with print there is a lot of theoretical
mystification. His advise: “The best thing is to visit print plants and
understand the best practices on the shopfloor.”
Nair told the gathering that it is imperative to measure quality. He explained how 30 years ago, quality was measured as 300
dpi. Today that number has changed. Find out the reasons for this change!
He spent a lot of time explaining how in today’s day and age, print is only 30-40% of the total product component. There are
other assets like the data. So where are the measurables in such a module for companies like Seshasai and Mail Order
Solution? He spoke of the largest online print company in the world, Vistaprint (USD 1.4 billion), is 2% of the largest online ecommerce company.
Nair told the students, not to think “small”, but to scale up. He explained, “Models are the same, but our industry is very
capital intensive.”He explained, “So, the Capex to turnover ratio is just 1.5 times, whereas it is three times in other industries.
There is a stiff competition in the market. Every day, new units emerge and shut down. The process of shutting down a
business is slow, as the owners continue to struggle for survival.”
Going forward, he told the students to understand that consolidation will happen not only in the print industry, but also in
every other industry. This is because, as Nair opined, smaller players will not be able to sustain. His cry was: Today’s print
firm firms will have to scale up, or print firms will fail to survive.
Dev Nair extolled the students to think out of the box and look at the other side of the fence at “print buyers”. Even in this he
stated, there are two types of print buyers. One is the multinational lot, who bring international experience to India and tell
printers on what they want.
Print firms in India do a lot of work with Indian customers and try to
bring in new technologies available. Usually, they try to adopt what
their competition or the multinationals are doing. Sometimes, the
international buyers have multiple layers of decision-making process.
Their principals have to approve every millimetre of the design. I am
not sure whether this is good for India or not, but they are here.
He told the students that they can be a print manager or production incharge with these super brands.
He concluded his speech by extolling the students to focus on the three
Ps of printing. These are: Passion, Perseverance and Perfection.

First Print Cluster of North India at Karnal
28 March, 2015 was a golden day for the printing and packaging
industry of Northern India in general and Karnal in particular.
During a simple but elegant ceremony cheques worth 3 crore
against advance payment to the vendors for the supply of
machinery and equipment for the Printing and Packaging Cluster
at Karnal were distributed by Mr. Kamal Chopra, Chairman,
International Relations, AIFMP. This money was received by this
cluster from the Government of India, Ministry of MSME under
Cluster Development Programme (CDP) of the ministry.
th
The Ministry of Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSME),
Government of India (GoI) has adopted the cluster development
approach as a key strategy for enhancing the productivity and
competitiveness as well as capacity building of Micro and Small
Enterprises (MSEs) and their collectives in the country. Karnal
Print Pack Cluster is the first and only cluster of printing industry in Northern India, to get Rs. 3 Crore as the first installment
for the purchase of plant & machinery after completing building and other infrastructures required under the rules.
Speaking on the occasion, Mr. Kamal Chopra, said cluster is not a building or a place but it is a vision and the only tool for the
survival in the present age of stiff global competition and the decreasing trends in the availability of skilled workforce for this
industry. He said, it is the need of the hour to ‘produce cheap’ which is only possible if we work united in a group. We are
fortunate that the Government has introduced this scheme to support the sustainability and growth of MSEs, by addressing
common issues such as improvement of technology, skills and quality, market access, access to capital etc.
The cluster development scheme, Mr. Chopra said is identical to build capacity of MSEs for common supportive action
through formation of self help groups, upgradation of associations etc. to create /upgrade infrastructural facilities and to set
up common facilities centres for the overall benefit of trade and industry. He congratulated the team of Karnal Printers led by
Mr. Amit Arora, Managing Director of the Cluster for this rare achievement which was possibly only due to their dedication,
hard work and great degree of tolerance.
Mr. Chopra further added that this place is now just like a pilgrimage for the people-in-print especially from the northern
region of the country. The printers of Karnal have shown us the way to progress, they are the torch bearers and now this light
will glow in every part of North India, I do hope.

Tap the Faster Growing Economy
Exhibitors eagerly book stalls at the upcoming Screen Print Vietnam
2015 expo to seize new opportunities
I
n a scenario where economies of various countries are on a recovery path, it is
logical to tap the faster growing economy among them in order to ensure that
your company grows along with it. This is why exhibitors have been eagerly
booking stalls at the upcoming Screen Print Vietnam 2015 expo to seize the new
opportunities that its growing economy offers. In fact, Vietnam is such an
attractive business proposition these days that even smaller firms are joining
hands and sharing a stall with the aim of exploring the Vietnam market as well as the multiple benefits that it offers together.
Over the past month, printing material manufacturers and suppliers from across India, Asia and the globe have been
communicating with Aditya Expositions, the organisers of Screen Print Vietnam 2015 to ensure that they get first preference
and are allotted prime positions at the venue. The sooner one confirms the stall booking, the better their chances of going
through the floor plan and getting a stall that is located in a ‘good’ location.
The Screen Print Vietnam exhibition, which makes its debut from July 30 to August 1, 2015 at Saigon Exhibition & Convention
Center (SECC), has been conceptualised as a platform that will enable exhibitors and visitors alike to tap the market’s inherent
growth potential.
During 2015, the printing and packaging industry is expected to grow 7% for the whole year and 10-12% next year at Vietnam.
According to reports, there are more than 1,000 printing and packaging firms nationwide earning total revenue estimated at
over US$1 billion a year. Plus, the domestic market is said to be accounting for a major share of this, which means its growth is
not dependent on external business.
Vietnam’s economy and printing industry have been on an upward trend for quite a while now. From printing labels to
packaging materials and a wide range of printing services, the industry is well settled and has made a reputation for itself. At
the same time, textile printing, flexo printing and digital technology are also gaining in popularity.
The potential for further growth seems almost limitless. For this, it is essential to be updated with the latest developments in
technology materials and methods.
The credibility factor counts
While the exhibition aims to highlight new developments and showcase new offerings to a market
that is poised for substantial growth in future, its endorsement by leading industry associations has
given it an official seal of approval. From the Vietnam Chamber of Commerce and Industry (VCCI)
to the national screen printing association of China (CSPIA) and Screenprinting and Graphics
Association of India (SGAI), the national screen printing association of India to Indian Printing
Packaging and Allied Machinery Manufacturers’ Association (IPAMA), all have pledged their
support for Screen Print Vietnam 2015.
Screen Print Vietnam is being organized by Aditya Expositions, a brand that has carved an enviable reputation over the past
two decades by organizing the Screen Print India exhibition since 1994. Screen Print Vietnam is a logical extension of the
Screen Print India exhibition, which has consistently been Asia’s leading exhibition of International stature, attracting
exhibitors, pavilions and delegates from across the globe.

INTERNET BOOSTS PACKAGING SECTOR
Research facility plays key role in Finnish paper chemicals firm’s sustainability plans
At a temperature-controlled Kemira laboratory in Nanjing, capital of Jiangsu province, one can find lab workers and
technicians huddled over consoles and machines taking notes and entering measurements in carefully calibrated charts.
Research findings from the Nanjing laboratory have already made a big difference to the Helsinki, Finland-based Kemira Oyj,
the world’s largest paper chemicals maker. According to company officials, the new findings have helped Kemira boost
annual output by 100,000 metric tons, especially at a time when most of its peers are downsizing production.
Jari Rosendal, President and CEO of Kemira, told that though the global paper industry has shrunk in size due to less use of
printing and writing paper, it is on the upswing in China due to rising demand from e-commerce companies. “You have no
idea of how much it means to the packaging industry,” he said. “On days when people go on an online shopping spree,
billions of cardboard boxes are consumed.”
While online shopping is just one part of the growing demand in China, the other centres on the growing use of paper tissue
products. Demand has risen for paper tissue products ranging from basic sanitary paper to niche products like waterproof
kitchen paper towels and recyclable tissues, said industry experts.
China has tripled its paper production capacity in the last 10 years, and in 2009 zoomed past the United States as the world’s
biggest papermaker. The size of the industry can be gauged from the fact that China’s three weeks of paper output now equals
the entire annual output of Wisconsin, the top papermaking state in the US.
Rosendal said that along with economic growth, China’s demand for paper and pulp products has grown quickly in the past
decade, but the market is not growing as fast as in the past, as people are going online for news and information, thereby using
less printing paper.
Niu Qingmin, president of the Paper Industry Association in Jiangsu province, said that the slowing growth in China’s paper
industry is a reflection of a so-called periodic excess capacity. “China’s paper industry is going through a period of deep
restructuring, because we developed too fast in the beginning, even at the expense of our environment,” he said. “If the highly
polluting factories are shut down, it will leave more room for the development of regulated companies. In such a scenario,
overcapacity will no longer be an issue,” he said.
Niu said that China’s paper market will have steady growth in the long term, especially in the packaging and tissue sector.
The Finland-based company said it plans to offset losses in stagnant markets like Europe, by focusing on packaging, paper
boards and paper tissue business growth in Asia. Rosendal said that Kemira has more than doubled its capacity in China after
setting up the Nanjing facility.
“It is quite an aggressive expansion in China, considering how much we generated for the
past year.”
The chemicals company raked in about 100 million euros ($ 124.7 million) in China in
2013, and it plans to invest $ 100 million on the Nanjing unit, which will be the largest of its
kind in Asia.
Kemira acquired the Netherlands-based Akzo Nobel’s global paper chemicals business in
July to help double its paper chemicals business in Asia Pacific, and expand its geographic
reach and product portfolio.
“We don’t just go around buying up companies to show how big we can get. It is a
requirement of the market,” Rosendal said. “We believe both production and demand
will continue to grow in the world’s largest paper market.”-

OPA to Establish Print Media Ashram at Ludhiana
A
s per the available national stats, about 63% of the school students drop out at different
stages before reaching Class-X, due socio economic, poor in studies or any other reason.
Very few opportunities for skill development are available for these out of school youth
especially in the informal sector. Because, most of the existing skill development
programmes are long term in nature, poor and less educated youth cannot afford long term
training programmes due to higher entry qualifications, opportunity cost etc. On the other hand
with the change in technology and installation of sophisticated computerised machines, the
printing and packaging industry of the region is facing acute shortage of skilled and semi skilled
workforce. At the same time due to development projects in their own states the workforce from
other states like Himachal Pradesh, Uttra Khand, Uttar Pradesh and Bihar is declining day by day.
To make the region self sufficient in skilled labour for Printing and Packaging Industry and for
giving emphasis on skill development, Offset Printers Association (OPA) decided to setup the
‘Print Media Ashram’ for imparting the modular employable skills (MES) to the rural unemployed
youth. An awareness camp for the purpose was organized at ‘Police Public School’ at village
Bharowal Kalan, around 25 km from Ludhiana on Hambran road on 27th April, 2015. Very
encouraging response was received and more than 23 youth enrolled themselves on the spot for
modular employable skills.
Speaking on the occasion, Mr. Kamal Chopra, General Secretary of the association said, there is need to evolve a new frame
work for Skill Development for the informal sector. We are encouraging the youth to get training for this profession which has
many skills such as Pre-Press, DTP, Screen Printing, Post-Press, Binding, Machine operator etc. A student can get training in
any of these modular employable skills (MES). OPA will be providing such training at the Print Media Ashram free of cost.
Such training will be provided on flexible delivery mechanism i.e. part-time, weekends or full time.
Mr. Chopra added that such training can also be provided on the shop floors where some stipend will also be paid to the
interested youth. The need for giving emphasis on the Skill Development, especially for the less educated, poor and out of
school youth has been highlighted in various forums.
Mr. Amarjot Arora, Executive Member OPA said, It is not only a project for the social awareness but a concept to spread the
knowledge about printing amongst the youngsters. Under the project it is decided to educate the out of school and unemployed youth about printing and to prompt them to adopt printing as a career.
Giving his views, Mr. Manish Jain, Project In-charge said: The skill development at present is taking place mostly in the
informal way, i.e. persons acquire skill at the work-place when they help their parents, relatives and employers etc.
Mr. Kultaj Singh, Principal of the School, welcomed the step taken by OPA and offered
full cooperation to empower the Youth. He offered the space to start the ‘Print Media
Ashram’ at the premises of the Police Public School and said that the classes can start in
the coming week at the school premises on Saturday/Sunday.
Thanking the courtsey of Mr. Kultaj Singh, Mr. Parvesh Jagga, Executive Member OPA
said: The essence of the scheme is in the certification that will be nationally recognised by
both the government agencies and industry/trade organisations. The certificate from
the MSME DI, Ludhiana will be provided only on the completion of the given number of
hours of training. There will be no time frame fixed for the purpose, but the student will
be getting the stipend till the time he/she is getting training in a particular skill.
