RESTAURANT HOURS
from the presi dent
Greetings! During these months of seasonal transition, as we move from summer into autumn
and your daily schedules no doubt change accordingly, I encourage you to think about incorporating
our Club into a new and improved routine.
Do you simply want to take advantage of the last days of summer before it ends? Join us in
September for the last month of our weekly summer activities – running in the park, women’s
squash group or drinks on the terrace!
Returning to longer work days? Treat yourself with a cut and shave in our barbershop or schedule an
appointment for a massage. Back to school? Have a last hurrah in our Woodrow Wilson Room, where
you will be taken care of by our top-notch staff and enjoy the cuisine of our renowned chef. Wish you
were going back to school? Attend one of our lecture events and expand your intellectually curiosity.
As October approaches and the air turns crisper, we launch into a new fall season of events and
activities. We are honored to host both Ambassador Rosemary A. DiCarlo (September 11) and
Governor David Paterson (October 21) as spotlight speakers. Make your reservations on our new
website now!
Another major event looms large with the impending fall season – mark your calendars for the annual
celebration of Homecoming! This year’s Homecoming football game sees Columbia go up against
Penn on Saturday, October 19. Bring your friends and family to the game (and stop by the Columbia
Club table to say hello!). Then, bring your uptown spirit midtown to the clubhouse. For out-of-town
guests and post-Homecoming revelers, the comfort, convenience and class of our Midtown clubhouse
provides a fitting Columbia-spirited base for your Homecoming activities.
Thanks to your generous voluntary contributions, we’ve had the pleasure over the past few summer
months to implement and refine some subtle changes to our Club. These improvements promise to
make Club life even more accessible and engaging for you, our members. As the dust settles on our
first floor refurbishing, come and see what your contributions have built!
Also, one of our most important and exciting revitalizations has been the expanding membership base.
We continue to receive applications for membership daily, carrying forward the steady growth that
started last year. As we move into a new membership year, I want to take this opportunity to wholeheartedly welcome our newest additions and express our appreciation to our loyal, long-term members.
Please remember that the clubhouse serves as your off-campus home for social, cultural and
intellectual life. Our hospitable and accommodating staff will make every effort to provide you with an
enriching clubhouse experience. Above all, though, an enriching club life is thanks to you – our old and
new members. I look forward to seeing you at the Club!
Warmest regards,

Moments Captured is the captivating story
of two indelible individuals and a shattering murder in late nineteenth-century San
Francisco. An epic saga of young America
flexing its muscle, it is roughly based on
the life of the great photographer Edward
Muybridge. Through Mr. Seidman’s finely
drawn prose, the reader witnesses nationbuilding on a colossal scale, along with the
politics of wile, greed, and seduction.

The 2013 New York City election cycle has
been the most competitive in 12 years and
the most entertaining in recent memory.
From open seat contests for every citywide office and four out of five borough
president seats, to the emergence of former Governor Eliot Spitzer as a candidate
for city comptroller, to Anthony Weiner’s
comeback attempt in the mayoral race,
the election cycle has been memorable.
With major party nominees set for mayor
and other offices and the future of New
York in the post-Bloomberg era on the line,
it is time to start looking at how we got to
this point and where does New York go
from here.
Join us as we discuss this year’s New
York City election cycle with someone
who brings a deep understanding of New
York’s political world: David Paterson, the
55th Governor of New York. Serving from
2008 to 2010, Governor Paterson moved
into the Executive Mansion following over
two decades in state and city politics.
Prior to becoming governor, he served as
lieutenant governor, minority leader of the
state Senate and as a longtime state
senator from Harlem.
Governor Paterson will be interviewed by
CUCNY board member John R.D. Celock
’04JRN. Mr. Celock is the state politics
reporter for The Huffington Post, based in
Washington, and the author of The Next
Generation: Young Elected Officials and
Their Impact on American Politics. He has
extensively covered New York politics
from Brooklyn to Buffalo, including the
historic 2001 city elections.
The evening will allow for attendees to ask
Governor Paterson their own questions
on the city elections. Anticipate answers
steeped in Governor Paterson’s keen insights and observations as to where New
York is going as Mayor Michael Bloomberg
leaves office and what you can expect in
the final days of the 2013 elections.
Is the book dead? In today’s digital age,
many questions have arisen about the
future of books, both in print and digital
formats. From medieval manuscript books
to today’s playable media and interactive
urban fictions, Andrew Piper explores the
myriad ways that physical media have
shaped how we read in Book Was There.
Mr. Piper elegantly argues that despite
our ever-evolving digital world, the book
is here to stay. Mr. Piper teaches German
and European literature at McGill
University and is also the author of

As the commercialization of American
higher education accelerates, more
students are coming to college with the
narrow aim of obtaining a preprofessional
credential. The traditional four-year college
experience – an exploratory time for
students to discover their passions and
test ideas and values with the help of
teachers and peers – is in danger of
obsolescence. In College, prominent
cultural critic and faculty member at
Columbia University Andrew Delbanco
considers the challenges facing American
colleges and offers a trenchant defense
of such an education, warning that it is
becoming a privilege reserved for the
relatively rich at the expense of
America’s democratic promise and
future generations.
Sam Roberts has been The New York
Times’ Urban Affairs Correspondent since
2005 and is the host of The New York
Times Close Up, an hour-long weekly
news and interview program.

OPERA NIGHT: NORMA AT THE
METROPOLITAN OPERA
FRIDAY, OCTOBER 18
SEPTEMBER
5:30pm: Dinner
7:30pm: Performance
Cost: $169 per person (includes 3-course dinner, lecture, ticket,
and transportation to the opera house)
Join Professor of Music, W. Anthony Sheppard, for the
Metropolitan Opera’s presentation of Vincenzo Bellini’s Norma.
While you dine at the Club, Professor Sheppard will play
excerpts from the night’s opera and give you an overview of
the plot and musical highlights, locating the work in its artistic
and historical context to enhance your experience of the
performance. After dessert, you will be whisked away to
Lincoln Center where your seats in the Dress Circle await you.
Norma was first produced at La Scala on 26 December 1831,
and is based on the dramatic tragedy of the same name by
Alexandre Soume. The work is generally regarded as an
example of the supreme height of the bel canto tradition,
and its title role features one of the most demanding soprano
performances in the history of opera. Since its premiere, the
role has been taken on by some of opera’s most talented
female performers, and for their production, the Met grants
the challenge to the enormously talented Sondra Radvanovsky.
HALLOWEEN BASH AT THE
