What you’re supporting
Walter Travis at Ekwanok
Vermont Hickory Golf Association is committed to creating
a virtual presence to celebrate Vermont’s critical role in the
development of golf in the early days of the sport in the U.S.
Towards this end, proceeds from this tournament will be
used to form a Vermont Golf Museum. If you are interested
in helping out in this new endeavor -- either through
donations of time, assets or money -- please contact a
VHGA board member.
History of STOWE Country Club
T
he origins of Stowe CC reach back to the early winter of
1950 when a group of locals realized they needed a summer
compliment to their winter skiing businesses. Shares were offered
at $ 25.00 each (and included the first year’s membership). A 75
acre farm was purchased, including the house and two barns.
Walter Barcum, superintendent at Burlington Country Club, a
1924 Donald Ross course, was hired to design and supervise
construction of the course. The original 9 holes opened in 1951,
and was a huge local success, so much so that a new 18 hole course
was built in 1962. The course we play today has remained virtually
unchanged.
Stowe Country Club also was home to Joe Kirkwood, an Australian
golf professional that became world-famous for his trick-shot
artistry. Kirkwood was one of the most accomplished touring
professionals of the early twentieth century, his best finish being
third in the British Open. He also challenged for the U.S.
Open title five times between 1921 and 1934. He became most
famous for his trips around the globe with touring pro Walter
Hagen, the two giving exhibitions and clinics for everyone from
presidents, royalty, heads of state, and even the prisoners at Alcatraz.
Kirkwood spent the last years of his life in Stowe and was a big
proponent of junior golf. Kirkwood died in 1970 and is buried a
par-5 distance from the clubhouse.
