Stay tuned in late June for the video release as well as the re-release of ‘When U Whine It (Radio Mix)’ the CD single. SPEAKING WITH CASPER... ith the help of Ras Jockey, I just completed a combination with legendary reggae artist Freddie McGregor in Unlimitedsounds Studios. We finished up on the remix of ‘Good Girl’, this track is off my newly released CD Flip Deh Mood , this new remix will be released in the fall. But let me tell you, this reggae legend is a very talented and humble man and it was an honour to work with him. I’m currently working on a wicked track with the one and only Fred Cash featuring myself and Gilly Gadan. The track is called ‘Bless Me’. As well, I’m completing another ‘hot’ track in combination with Lady Luscious called ‘A Who Dat?’. Finally, preparations are being made for my music video shoot ‘When U Whine It (Radio Mix)’, which will be directed by Royette, host of Caribbean Vibrations (OMNI 1 TV) and produced by Alain Arthur and Paul Wishart (Wishart W Unlimitedsounds would like to introduce and welcome Sandi Destonis as the company’s Publicist/Public Relations manager, for more information/bookings please contact her at 647-998-5807 or 416-370-5999 email: sandi. [email protected] I want to give thanks to Delroy Sterling of CHIN FM radio for inviting me on his show Caribbean Connections where I had the opportunity to speak with the co-host Claudia and to my fans. I have to say that interview was one of the best interviews I’ve had in a long time. This is how Toronto’s reggae/urban radio/TV/media should embrace their local artists/talents, if there was more of this kind of behaviour in Toronto, then Toronto would become even larger in the reggae/urban scene. The key words for artists/talents are: be strong, persistent, consistent and most of all, always be professional. The music industry can be very cut-throat at times but roll with the punches and try to stay afloat, the ones that keep Jah’s faith will be the ones to succeed. Let us all come together and work in harmony. Jah Beng: Jah Beng is my “real” name since it is the name I chose for myself. The other slave name that I was given at birth will soon be a thing of the past as I intend to officially change that name to reflect my African descent. For me, this is not superficial or something to be taken lightly. I reject the branding represented by that name. I do not intend to bear it for the rest of my days. I only use it now for business purposes, as it is the one on my so-called “official” documents. I was born in Trench Town, Kingston, Jamaica. R ReggaeX: What does “Jah Beng” mean? Jah Beng: During the firece wars of liberation against the British oppressors, in the 1700s, the Maroons, of Jamaica, used an instrument called the Abeng horn, to warn the people of coming battle. Since I belive our people are still fighting these wars of liberation, I use my voice as an instrument to soud out messages to aid in this battle. As a Rastaman I am guided by the most high JAH. I, therefore, named myself Jah Beng which means the horn of Jah.. ReggaeX: How did you start out singing? Jah Beng: I started out singing because I loved the music that I was hearing on the sound systems as a youth growing up in Trench Town. I connected with the powerful and conscious lyrics along with the heavyweight grooves of Bob Marley and the Wailers, Culture, Burning Spear, Big Youth and many others and did my best to mimic their songs. Singing was also a way for me to pass the time, as I often did not get into the games with the other children. I was a quiet and solitary child and had lots on my mind as far as I can remember. ReggaeX: How long were you in the reggae music industry and when did you start recording? Jah Beng: Well, Reggae music was what I grew up with. I was dancing and singing to these songs since I was an infant. I really got into the industry in the late 90’s when I did my first showcase at the Bamboo club (on Queen St., downtown Toronto) in March of 1995. I had recorded a demo of my first album in the months prior to that club date at the Bamboo. ReggaeX: What is the name of your very first song and what year was it released? Jah Beng: My very first “recorded” song was an R&B track entitled “I’m Gonna Make You Love Me”. It was released a few years before my first Reggae album “Cry for the Children” which came out in 1997. ReggaeX: Who are some of your role models and influences musically and why? Jah Beng: Marley, Tosh, Bunny “Wailer”, Joseph Hill (of Culture), Winston Rodney (Burning Spear)...The list goes on...And the reason they had had such an impact on me was that they were bringing forth the message of Ras TafarI and African liberation. You know, love, peace, justice, war, if necessary, to free oneself from oppression. They also provided invaluable insights and true enlightenment for the ghetto youths that we would never have received in the system of colonial brainwashing and oppression that masqueraded as an education for I and I. ReggaeX: Where do you intend to reach musically? Jah Beng: I hope to continue in the footsteps of my mentors and take the genre to higher heights or, at the very least, preserve the level and the standards that the legendary ones have reached and set. This means producing high quality Roots Reggae Music that is uplifting, enlightening and thought provoking. ReggaeX: Why are you a Rastaman, how many years have you been a Rastaman, and how does being a Rastaman affect you musically (negative or positive examples)? Jah Beng: I am a Rastaman because I am an African and every fiber of my being tells me that the creator is an African and should be worshipped as such. Marcus Mosiah Garvey said “look to the east, where a black king shall be crowned” and there you will find JAH. Yeah. We found JAH in Ethiopia in the person of H.I.M. Haile Selassie I and he gave us life, strength and purpose. When we looked to Africa we found our JAH, our “King, government, armies and persons of great affairs...” In terms of how long I have been a Rastaman - I have been this way since I was 12 years old. It was at this age that I decided that I wanted to be one of the dreadlocked and wise ones because the message of the Rastaman touched my heart and rang true to my very soul. As far as how being a Rastaman affects me musically - I have often said there is a huge difference between an entertainer or musician that “becomes” a Rastaman and a Rastaman who becomes a musician. Rasta affects the music not the other way around. We bring our voices and instruments into the musical arena to express our culture, point of view and reality. You can “tun” (or turn) cornmeal but you can’t “tun” (or turn) Rasta. Zeen. ReggaeX: What are your views on Reggae Music in Canada? Jah Beng: There are some excellent musicians creating Reggae in Canada, however the infrastructure that will enable this genre to thrive is yet to be built. There is also some negative competition going on as well that stifles our ability to command the respect and dollars that a good number of us deserve. I see some changes coming and I hope it is for the better. Many great works are being done by a great many within its fraternity. Young, old, short and tall, male and female, believer and leech, many works, positive works are surfacing and the industry is bubblin’. I am excited to see the works that are reaching from so many different sources letting me know that I am not the only one who understands and sees the great opportunities available in this Canadian Reggae industry. I The unfortunate thing is our inability to selflessly aid in each other’s growth and glorify the works of others within Canadian Reggae. For instance, CIUT, CKLN and CHRY are ONE entity. Radio! Yet some of the personalities within the stations work only on ‘their things’ as opposed to pooling resources and bring the power that they truly possess. Each DJ services anywhere from 50,000 to 100,000 listeners per show! WOW! Interesting if they actually communicated and created a greater vibe. There are some liaisons among the crews going on right now. I’m just saying more can and needs to be done. We are the ones with the power allowing a ‘babylon’ system strongly in place locking us out and not stepping up and walking past, stepping around or bucking down this ‘door’ they have set up to block our place. Many within our community speak of Toronto / Canada as the ‘dark hole’ of reggae. Many believe that nothing local or Canadian has a chance at any level of success here. Artists large in Europe walk the streets unknown within our city walls. Artists like Willie Williams, Donna Makeda, Jah Beng, Steele, Blessed, Leroy Brown, Leroy Sibbles, Sonia Collymore, Chester Miller presently and in the past, are among some of the more respected locally and internationally for instance. These folks struggle to get airplay from some community radio DJs and ZERO from mainstream radio. Some seek to blame the ‘system’, some blame the DJs, some blame the artists themselves for not taking the time to get their music to these DJs, some even blame the fans and as usual I blame me! I have not done enough to break down the door. I’m working on it. The Toronto International Reggae Music Awards (TIRMA) on Sunday, June 19th is a victim of this unfortunate situation. When Winston Hewitt, after 20 very respectable years decided to take a rest from the Canadian Reggae Music Awards, ShineRoc an artist, stepped up to the plate and brought TIRMA to the forefront. In conversation with him I asked him why he chose to do this right now. His answer was that he believed too many great Canadian works were on the table from the previous year and “the Canadian Reggae artist should not go unrewarded after such an important year, so I had to pick up the ball and carry on this very daunting task. Many people had nuff to say about Winston Hewitt, now I have nothing but respect for the work and consistent contribution he brought to the industry.” My elders always mentioned, “Walk in a next man shoes and find out how he lives prior to passing judgment.” Shine-Roc has just slipped on these very large shoes and what is disappointing so far is the lack of support he is receiving from some within the industry or more the negatives that are being slung his way. I call on the community to rally around him and this vision. (Continued on page 11) TORONTO INT’L. Dr. Vernon Carrington A POOR MAN SAVETH A CITY AND NO ONE TAKE IT TO HEART (“Blessed Be He Who Enlargeth Gad”. Dr. Vernon Carrington, Prophet Gad November 1, 1935 - March 22nd, 2005). Doctor Vernon Carrington was born November 1, 1935 at 95 Matthews Lane to George Carrington and Elfreda Myrie. George was born in England and met Elfreda, a Jamaican, in Cuba. They returned to Jamaica and had five children of which Vernon was one of twins. In his early years, Vernon promoted dances with Coxsone Sound System while working as a shoemaker in the factory owned by Hanwood Brother Gad got his conversion in May 1961 and started to read the Bible and other books pertaining to world affairs preparing himself to go out into the world and meet people. He moved to his grandmother, Lillian Myrie’s house at 7 Davis Lane in Trench Town, whee he was influenced by her work in the Garvey Movement and membership in the Ethiopian World Federation. It was at this house that Vernon began his work to gather the “Twelve Tribes of Israel”. Ethiopian World Federation Charter 15 and Brother Gad started functioning as the Twelve Tribes of Israel under that charter. He invited Reverend Evans to visit the organization, who promised to allow brothers and sisters to repatriate to Goba Bale. This promise never materialized and Brother Gad and Brother Ivan Coore travelled to Chicago and then to Ethiopia, where they discovered that Reverend Evans did receive a land grant, but because of neglect, it was taken away. Brother Gad decided that since His Majesty Emperor Haile Selassie I had given a land grant in Sheshemane, Ethiopia, to all people of African descent in the West, the organization would function only as the Twelve Tribes of Israel. Brother Gad met Brother Dan 1st and Brother Naphtali 1st and began holding meetings every Sunday in Davis Lane. Brother Naphtali 1st read in the “African Opinion” that a Reverend Evans had received a land grant in Goba Bale in Ethiopia. Reverend Evans sent the The Twelve Tribes of Israel began on February 25, 1968 and the first task was to gather the 49 executive members - 12 brothers and their shadows, 12 sisters and their shadows, representing the Twelve Tribes of Israel and Sister Dinah. During the years to follow, the Prophet sent members to Sheshemane, and established houses in Trinidad, Tobago, Barbados, St. Vincent, Grenada, Guyana, Suriname, New Zealand, Canada, United States of America (New York and California), United Kingdom (London and Manchester), Germany, Sweden, Ghana, Kenya, Australia, New Zealand and Ethiopia. He was one of the founders and named the Jamaican Rastafarian Development Community (JRDC) in Sheshemane, which is a registered nongovernmental organization. Brother Gad gathered the members by teaching them to read the Bible a chapter a day to learn for themselves; that each member belonged to a Tribe of Israel according to their time of birth, and each tribe represented a different part of the body of Christ. He pointed to His Imperial Majesty Emperor Haile Selassie I and the Ethiopian royal lineage as the seat of David. He taught repatriation, self-reliance, unity, peace, justice, faith and prosperity. He taught that whosoever will may come. Universal Heroes Promotions Community Centre In Conjunction With MR. Whiz Wig?” The host of the Juno Gala Dinner Awards Show, Jann Arden, had trouble pronouncing “WYSIWYG” (What You See Is What You Get), but Sonia Collymore had no trouble collecting her award. This was win # 2 for Ms. Collymore. Having previously won the coveted Juno award for the single “You Won’t See Me Cry” in 2003, this award was especially special to Ms. Collymore for a number of reasons. As she says, “...this was my debut album and I personally wrote 13 of the 14 songs. And this year, the awards were held in Winnipeg, Manitoba, the home of my 9 - 5’s Head Office. I work full time while pursuing my singing career, the bills have to be paid.” Also in attendance at the awards (and seated with Ms. Collymore) was the president of MTS, Cheryl Barker. “It felt great to have the support of my collegues from work.” Ms. Collymore was up against the likes of Steele (Uncorrupted), Korexion (It’s All Bless), Carl Henry feat Ce’Cile (Bare As She Dare), and Blessed feat Kardinal Offishal (Empty Barrel). The Gala Awards Dinner was held Saturday, April 2nd at the Winnipeg Convention Centre. The Awards weekend started out Thursday, March 31st with the kick off festivities, a Manitoba Social held at the Winnipeg Convention Centre. For those of us who have never attended a social, it was traditionally a pre-wedding festivity, usually held in a church to raise money for the intended couple. It has taken a new meaning of it’s own, it is now a great big party with lots of food (especially cheese), beer and music. Sonia shared the stage at the social with (BTO) Bachman Turner Overdrive (among others). By Ms. Irie onia Collymore won the 2005 Juno Award for Reggae Recording of the year with WYSIWYG” S “.....and the winner for Reggae Recording of the year is....Whi....Whe...What is this? Note: at the Empire Cabaret, the likes of Gary Beals, Ray Robinson and Fresh I.E. preformed (sponsored by the Urban Music Association). Saturday April 2nd featured Korexion at the same venue. Earlier in the day, the Juno Fan Fare was featured, where a number of Juno nominees including the likes of Kardinal Offishal, Keshia Chante’, Fefe Dobson and Jacksoul were available to autograph their albums (CD’s) and pose for pictures with fans. The Gala Awards Dinner took place at the Winnipeg Convention Centre where the majority of the Junos were handed out (31 0f 40). Sunday April 3rd starting at 5:30 pm the stars began arriving for the “Red Carpet” walk. Ms. Collymore was interviewed by CTV and SHAW TV. The sold out (in15 minutes or so I heard) televised award ceremony kicked off at promptly 7PM at the MTS Centre. Over 15,000 people at the centre and millions of people in Television land watched the remaining 9 categories of awards handed out as well as video portions of the 31 awards handed out the previous night at the Gala Dinner. The televised awards were hosted by Comedian Brett Butt and went nearly flawless. WYSIWYG is a computer acronym for What You See Is What You Get. When you pick up the album, you will get a whole lot more that you bargained for. You will find that it is more than merely eye candy. If there is such a thing as ear candy this is definitely it. Again, congratulations to Ms. Sonia Collymore and the Xes music staff, the producers of the album and all those who played a part in her successful debut CD. REGGAE FESTIVAL 2005 Until their arrival in 1992, reggae had not seen or heard a band quite like Morgan Heritage. Born in New York, the band consists of five of the 29 children of Denroy Morgan, former lead vocalist of the Black Eagles - lead vocalists Una, Peter, Gramps, (who also plays the keyboards), rhythm guitarist Lukes, and percussionist Mr. Mojo. Music played a significant role in their upbringing. Their father, Denroy Morgan was one of reggae’s early success stories scoring a massive hit with the track “I’ll Do Anything For You,” and becoming the first reggae artist to sign to RCA Records. Morgan Heritage’s initial breakthrough came after their stunning performances at the 1992 Reggae Sunsplash. With the major labels scouting for reggae acts at the time, MCA would sign Morgan Heritage ‘straight off the stage’. “Set Yourself Free” and “Mama & Papa”, culminating in their stunning track for Bobby Digital entitled “Protect Us Jah”. FAB 5 PERFORMS LIVE AT JAMAICA DAY JULY 23, 2005 JuLion’s Views (Continued from page 6) It is a necessary function that TIRMA serves. It is not about him, me or you. It is about all of us! Canadian Reggae needs this union of resources, talent and power. Canadian Reggae World dot Com pledges its support to TIRMA. I hope to entice more within the genre to step up. It was through MCA that their debut album “Miracles” came out in 1994. However, their major label excursion was a short one. Amidst the major label frustrations, Morgan Heritage found solace during their 1995 tour of the Ivory Coast. The tour became a discovery. By the end of 1995 they went back to Jamaica to capture the essence of their roots sound. Throughout 1996 and early 1997, a series of hits were to follow including “Let’s Make Up”, “People Are Fighting”, REGGAEXCLUSIVE’S “NEW BUSINESS” SPOTLIGHT NATTY POSSE ENTERTAINMENT atty Posse Entertainment was formed earlier this year to focus on the development and propagation of positive independent music. Based in Toronto, Canada the Posse is deeply involved in the roots reggae scene where they too are DJs, players of instruments and singers. The company was started after realizing that there was a desperate need for more organization and management amongst the mass of incredible talent and creativity that thrives in Toronto. So the work began, five empresses, a little office and a whole lot of really good N music. The Natty Posse is Drummie Zion Queen (Shani), DJ Chocolate (Lauren), who can be heard on CKLN88.1FM - Mondays 2.30-5pm, Haffi (Michelle), Singer Rosebudz (Rosie), and Bassie B Funk (Britta). Management and music publishing are the Natty Posse’s primary functions, but the overall premise of the company is to give our artists a chance to have the business of their music conducted correctly, confidently and carefully. The Natty Posse thus far provides Artist Representation for Odel, the DreamBand and Kidd Rasta and the Peacemakers. It is easy to see how the Posse can be motivated to work towards such goals with such inspirational music to and promote. circulate Odel’s Mind&Body Sold album, it’s spectacular release at the ModClub in March and continuing to spread his message of ‘freementality’ are projects that the Posse feels are truly positive contributions to the Canadian music community. High-quality music with highquality production is a pleasure to be involved with, as is Odel’s team of committed and dynamic associates. In a similar direction, the DreamBand featuring Hermina George will release their self-titled album this summer. Sam Weller, Laza, Gary Lowe & Raffa Dean are stalwart soldiers of Toronto’s reggae community, though this album spans about 5 genres in one; the pure, fluid voice of Hermina George combines with their solid backing to make a record that has major-label heads turning already. Within the independent music scene there is sometimes a lack of initiative and attention to detail when it comes to taking care of business. The Natty Posse believes that even the smallest project can manifest greatly with the right mentality, direction and dedication. This means taking all aspects of the entertainment industry seriously and applying proper, positive and perpetual work-procedures in and around the music that inspires all of its members. Stay tuned for the Natty Posse monthly event that will feature Natty Posse artists, those of the community that surrounds them and their combined work. We give thanks for the devine inspiration and te love within our hearts. The festival had to be renamed “Raggamuffins Festival” due to legal issues with the Marley family. T Even with a new name, the “Raggamuffins Festival” has not lost any of its punch both days were sold out. The festival traditionally attracts 30,000 reggae fans over both days. The festival also celebrates “Black History Month” as well as paying tribute to late reggae legends. This year’s tribute honored the late Dennis Brown. The “Raggamuffins Festival” began some 24 years ago in Mac Arthur Park, Los Angeles as a gathering of friends who love reggae music and to pay tribute to the late Bob Marley. Since then it has become the reggae festival that North American and the world pattern themselves after. The best of roots, lover’s rock, dancehall and old school reggae were well represented over the 2 days festival. While Southern California was drowning in flood rains, Long Beach rocked. Some of the acts that graced the stage on Saturday were: Detour Posse (House Band), Jimmy Cliff, Alpha Blondy, Easy Star All Stars (feat. Jr. Jazz), Tanya Stephens, Ozomatli, Midnite, Brent Dowe (The Melodians), Mr. Vegas and Shine Head. Stand out performances on Saturday were Jimmy Cliff and Tanya Stephens. It is hard to believe that Jimmy Cliff can still move with the best of them and dance the “Chaka Chaka” like someone half his age. Ms Stephens, Tanya, lets you know in no uncertain terms that she can not and will not be walked over. She can also sing the sweetest love song to let her man know how much she appreciates him ala “Long Ding Dong”. Sunday’s showcase had a more international feel, featuring artists from Africa, Germany, Mexico, Hawaii, England, South America, Jamaica and the US were well represented: Steel Pulse, Israel Vibrations, Barrington Levy, Don Carlos, Misty In Roots (UK), Kevin Lyttle, Calibe, Rupee, Gentleman (Germany), Martin Campbell (UK), Tribo De Jah (Brazil) and Detour Posse (House Band). Gentleman is someone to watch out for in the near future. He and his 14-piece band gave a WICKED performance. Barrington Levy is always a crowd pleaser and gave a good account of himself. The Long Beach crowd really soaked up every note. (No pun intended). Steel Pulse celebrating many years in the business closed the celebration in a “Birmingham Stylee”. Congratulations! to the Raggamuffins family, especially Barbara Barabino and Russell Gerlach. M.Cs for the event were Ms. Barabino, Richie B (Hot 102 Jamaica) and Amlak Tafari (UK). Congratulations also go out to the 14,000 plus people who attended each day for an incident free festival. There were no burning of ba**y man, ch*-ch* man or anything else. California has some of the toughest no-smoking laws. The event started out smoke free with special smoking areas provided outside for smoking. By Sunday, that was all ignored with plenty of the medicinal herbs scent in the air. Mark your calendars for the silver anniversary of the “Raggamuffin Festival” in 2006. A very important ingredient in this reggae equation is the hundreds of DJ sounds that Toronto, indeed, the world has. Today I’m sitting with Mikie Hyman founder of Lethal Star Sound. I asked him to tell me about how he got started. N “Well I started the sound back in 1991. Back in those days CDs were new in the DJ world, but I liked the clean sound that they give. I started with two regular CD players that didn’t have any pitch control, it was really hard trying to mix with them. I remember the vinyl DJ’s use to give me a hard time, and tell me to “tek me CD’s back home, dem don’t belong inna dancehall”. I could name a few of those sounds, but I won’t.” So you were not discouraged by them then? “No that didn’t stop me, I had a dream to have a CD sound, and look, mi still here.” but I am prepared.” Mikie, you say that you are the first CD sound in Canada? “Well let me clear something up right now. Lethal Star is Canada’s first CD sound although some people think say Nitro was the first, but I remember when they started in 1998, I met them. Just ask the people who use to come hear Lethal Star play back in ‘91, them will tell you. Anyway me and Nitro are friends and if they tell you the truth, they will say Lethal Star was first.” Chucky, originally from Clarendon, JA versatile in all aspects of the business has been in the industry for over 10 years and has played on many sound systems. Deno, originally from Clarendon is an MC who is full of vibes. Where did you get your CDs from? “When we started we had to pay $200 to cut a 60 minute CD. First we had to by the records and then transfer them to audio tape, then send them to a recording studio downtown Toronto. Cause those days nobody have CD burners, it had to be done that way.” I heard you have a large collection of dub plates? “That’s true, from Mighty Diamonds to Sean Paul, I have them all. If you want to hear them you have to come hear me play. Lethal star has come a long way from those early days, we’ve got bigger and better. This talented singing sensation also found herself nominated for Top Reggae Gospel Female Singer in the Canadian Reggae Music Awards alongside vocalist veteran Kay Morris. CORA REID-RUSSELL n the basement of her childhood home in Toronto, a young Cora ReidRussell would sit listening to her father play his vintage vinyl reggae collection. As a pioneer of the 1980s domestic reggae movement in Canada, Jimmy Reid planted in his daughter a love for music and her heritage. This love for and lineage of musical excellence became blatantly obvious when Cora burst onto the Canadian Reggae scene in 2004. Releasing two singles, Cora found herself propelled into the centre of Canada’s thriving Reggae community. I Yet, Cora Reid-Russell’s life was not always as encouraging and uplifting as her music. At one point, ReidRussell found herself spiralling in a destructive lifestyle that not only brought her years of emotional pain and distress, but also landed her in the hospital as a result of drug use. A single mother at 19 years of age, Cora struggled to cope by escaping through drug use, alcohol and parties on weekends. Her life seemed destined for ruin as she continued to search for relief and comfort in destructive activities. All this changed, one night when Cora sought for relief and comfort in Jesus Christ. No longer enslaved to drugs or a need to escape her life, Cora began to build upon her new found faith. Cora’s daughter Saijah has grown into and is continuing to grow into a talented writer and dancer. A newlywed, Cora has recently married Urban Music Recording Artist Brett Russell. Cora Reid-Russell has watched her life transform into a living testimony of the awesome changes that can be accomplished through a personal relationship with Jesus Christ. No longer a little girl in the basement listening to her father’s record collection, Cora Reid-Russell is now on stage, on the radio and in CD Players, bringing a new message of hope and edification through song. Cora Reid-Russell is living proof that despite the circumstances, there can be beauty from ashes. He debut full-length CD appropriately entitled “In His Presence,” is a collection of worship songs set to a swaying reggae vibe which Reid-Russell hopes will touch everyone and anyone that listens to it. With a strong collective of producers including Jimmy Reid, Brett Russell and Orville “Wyz” Malcolm, the album is set to change the sound of Reggae music with her signature blend of heartfelt vocals atop swaying Reggae vibes. O In 1958, the 12-year-old Holt entered his first contest. The talented teen was quickly snapped up by producer Leslie Kong. From there, the youngster began working with producer Clive Chin, debuting the partnership with “Rum Bumper”, a duet with Alton Ellis. More singles followed, but none really captured the island’s imagination. That all began to change in 1964 when Holt joined the vocal group “The Paragons”, replacing founding member Leroy Stamp. By 1968, The Paragons were Jamaica’s premier vocal group, with virtually every one of their releases a hit. In 1968, Holt set off on a parallel solo career, recording for producers Bunny Lee and Harry J. Amidst the growing pile of hit singles was also a clutch of albums, many picked up for U.K. released by the Trojan label. The label brought Holt to the U.K. later in 1974, and set him to work with pop producer Tony Ashfield. The end result was the covers collection “1000 Volts of Holt”, which gave Holt his first U.K. hit with “Help Me Make It Through the Night.” John Holt is set to perform live at the 2nd Annual Montreal International Reggae Festival which will be held on July 15th, 16th & 17th 2005 in Montreal. SUGAR MINOTT incoln Barrington (Sugar) Minott was born in Kingston, Jamaica, on May 25, 1956. He began his career in the sound systems while still a child, working as a selector for the “Sound of Silence Keystone” outfit, before launching his own “Gathering of Youth” sound system just as he hit his teens. In 1969, Minott decided to take the mic himself, not as a DJ, but as a singer. L One of the true renaissance men of reggae, equally accomplished as a producer and a singer, Minott is also a successful promoter and record label owner. “Herbman Hustling” showcases his sweet singing style and the gently rocking dancehall groove that he alone creates. However, “Roots Lovers”, released in 1980, showed a seismic shift in direction as Minott moved strongly into the lovers’ rock arena, whilst still maintaining a roots approach. Minott’s energy and enthusiasm seemed boundless and this year also saw the launch of his own labels, “Youth Promotion” and “Black Roots”, and his sound system, also called “Youth Promotion”. Few artists have had the impact on Jamaica’s dancehall scene as Sugar Minott. His releases provided the blueprints for the rise of the contemporary dancehall style, he was also equally influential as a producer, and his extraordinarily popular sound system helped launch numerous new DJs into the limelight. Sugar Minott is one of the headliners at the Montreal Int’l. Reggae Festival scheduled to be held in July 2005. MULLINGS t is no surprise Carrie Mullings would be one of the top promoters of reggae music. Her legendary father Karl Mullings, a pioneer in reggae music enriched Carrie to the consciousness of reggae music. Carrie took her love and knowledge for reggae music to the radio and in 2003 joined the team of The Caribbean Crucible on CHRY 105.5FM, Toronto’s longest running reggae program. Carrie’s personality captivated the listeners and lead to many guest appearances at reggae concerts. It wasn’t long before promoters starting knocking on Carrie’s door asking her to be the Master Ceremonies at their events. From there, Carrie began reporting events to other radio stations cross Canada and the U.S.A and quickly began building a reputation as the “go-to person” of reggae. I As her popularity began to grow, CHRY approached her in early 2004 to join the team of The Cutting Edge. With The Caribbean Crucible as her lead-in program, Carrie became one of the only females to host two top programs at CHRY radio. When Niche magazine launched in the spring of 2004, Carrie was approached to embark on yet a new venture, to serve as the magazine’s spokesperson. This challenge prepared her for her biggest coup a couple months later as a guest host of the first annual Montreal International Reggae Music Festival. Carrie received global attention from the festivities and quickly became a hot commodity as MC for reggae events. The summer of 2004 put Carrie at the top of her game, hosting events including some of reggae’s legendary artists including Gregory Isaacs, John Holt, Sugar Minott and The Mighty Diamonds. The highlight of her career took place in Wilmington, Delaware where she was asked to host the 10th Annual Bob Marley Tribute Festival in August 2004. Her style has been described as upbeat, entertaining and spontaneous while interacting with the crowd. In fall of 2004 the very ambitious Carrie entered the world of promotions, participating in the 5th Element show which featured up and coming artists such as Richie Spice, Chuck Fender, Anthony Cruz and veteran entertainer Shine head. Broadening her horizons has lead Carrie to her latest venture including television and cyberspace. She was invited to join WACC - “We Are Caribbean Culture” on the World Wide Web. This she said will allow people from around the world to hear her band of music on the Internet. You can still hear Carrie’s voice and music on The Caribbean Crucible, and The Cutting Edge weekly on CHRY 105.5FM. reggaeXclusive -- Web Site: www.caribbeanmusic.ca/reggaex --- Phone: 647-435-0637 -- Email: [email protected] Pg - 23 REGGAEXCLUSIVE’S DEEJAYS/SINGJAYS SPOTLIGHT ADMIRAL BAILEY YELLOWMAN PROFESSOR NUTS DONNA MAKEDA “Punany” “Zungguzungguguzungguzeng” “Tan So Back” “Sweet Victory” dmiral Bailey is one of the principal and most important DJs to emerge from the latter-day raggamuffin era of Jamaican reggae music. He began his DJ career for the legendary King Jammys and was also a regular artist on the sound system of the same name. ellowman was and is an oddity. At the height of his popularity in the early 80s he was at least as big as Bob Marley in Jamaica. Born Winston Foster, Yellowman came into this world back in 1959 in Kingston. An orphaned albino, Yellow’s formative years included time at the famous Alpha Boys School and the musical influences of that experience provided him with a very real sense of style and originality. Coupled with his wicked sense of humor he rode rhythms like no other before him and as a result left all of the competition in his wake. The first Jamaican DJ to be signed to a major American label, King Yellow’s place in the history of Jamaican music was truly well earned. rofessor Nuts began his career as a DJ performing on the St. Catherine, based Love Child Sound System. In 1985 he earned kudos for his first professional stage show at the renowned Cinema Two located in Half Way Tree. He gained a reputation for his comic approach to the dancehall, where he became known as Mr. Whobedeh and formed a partnership with the equally humorous Lecturer. onna Makeda has garnered for herself nine Reggae Music Awards including: “The Guyana Consul General’s Award” in 2004; “Top Reggae Dancehall DJ (female) in 1995, 1996 and 1999 and 2003; An “Arts & Entertainment Award” for her contribution to the Arts in 2000; an “Artistic Award of Excellence” in 2001; “Top Reggae Music Video (for her video “Jah Great Woman”) in 1995 and “Top Reggae Newcomer” in 1993 from the Canadian Reggae Music Awards. A It was the release of his tune “Punany” that catapulted the Admiral into a major league dancehall star. This tune was a massive hit despite not being played on the radio due to its slack lyrics. He then re-recorded a version called “Healthy Body” that was fit for airplay. “Punany” set the blueprint for the bashment style that was to dominate the dancehalls and sound systems worldwide for the next 15 years. After this, Admiral Bailey could literally do no wrong. His subsequent singles - “Big Belly Man”, “Kill Them With It”, “No Way No Better Than Yard”, “Kill Them With It”, “Horse Tonic”, “Think Me Did Done” and “Jump Up” all went clear and were enormous hits. All his big tunes were produced by King Jammys, who released an album “Kill Them With It” (Live And Love) to capitalise on the success of the 45s. P In 1990, he joined Papa San in a crucial showdown and survived the session to participate in a border clash with Louie Culture, Daddy Screw and the Ninja Kid. His distinctive style led to a high profile in the reggae media although he was unable to build on his notoriety with a significant hit. In spite of his success, his recorded output was sporadic, although this situation was redressed with the release of Tan So Back and three singles in 1999, “Mama Have Her Own”, “Jamaican Girls” and “Funny Guy”. His appeal is considered to be predominantly visual, and he has subsequently maintained a through steady profile dancehall videos. He has appeared alongside Jamaica’s top DJs including Beenie Man, Shabba Ranks, Ninjaman and singer Barrington Levy. D Donna’s song “Sweet Victory” was #1 on the reggae charts in Miami for eight weeks while “South Africa” was following closely at #2. “Jah Great Woman” also enjoyed much airplay and was #1 in Miami for six weeks. Her “Jah Great Woman” music video, which was done with the help of Videofact, was on high rotation on Much Music. Donna also signed a licensing deal with Amiata Records in Italy for the remix of her song “Life Story”. This CD included songs from Bob Marley, Rita Marley, and Burning Spear to name a few. Please contact [email protected] or call: 416-316-8373. ReggaeX: What do you think needs to be done to better the reggae music scene in Canada? Jah Beng: I think the best people - meaning those who really want to see Reggae music thrive in Canada and have the ability to do top quality work, in all required areas, should come together. We should work to ensure that only the best goes forth, develop those who need development and make sure the garbage goes where it belongs - in the garbage bin. ReggaeX: Where do you see Reggae music reaching in Canada and the World in general? Jah Beng: That is entirely up to the artists, promoters and Djs of this genre. Our attention to detail, professionalism and quality control measures will determine our path. Canada is definitely behind the rest of the world in terms of its acceptance of Reggae Music (i.e. airplay on mainstream radio etc) but this can change. Events like the Montreal Reggae Festival, the Irie Music Festival (in Toronto) and the Calgary Reggae Festival, offers opportunities for Canadian Reggae artists to step to the stage with the best in the genre and prove they can deliver big time...And if they get this opportunity (I hope the promoters are listening) they must deliver in a huge way. ReggaeX: Where do you (as a reggae recording artist) intend to take reggae music in the future? Jah Beng: I intend to take it to the world and to ensure the world knows we (Reggae artists) are still the voice of the voiceless. I want to ensure that this music remains a source of inspiration to those who need it most and continues to soothe the ears, hearts and souls of its listeners as it was meant to do. ReggaeX: Tell me how many albums and singles you have released to date. Jah Beng: I have released 3 singles and two albums. The first album, I mentioned earlier was entitled “Cry for the Children” (1997). The current album is entitled “River of Healing and will be fully released in June of 2005. The first single, from “River of Healing”, entitled “Biggest Part of Me”, is currently being played extensively, on radio, in various international locations and the video for “Biggest Part of Me” is being played on MuchVibe and MuchMoreMusic in Canada and on TV Africa. ReggaeX: Who are some of the producers you have worked with? Jah Beng: I have worked extensively with the renowned Charles “Tower” Sinclair and Orville “Wyz” Malcolm, of MessenJah (now both with Kornerstone Productions, www.kornerstone.net). I have also worked with Kareem “Jah B” Green and Robert Scarlett who are excellent musicians and producers as well. ReggaeX: Where does Jah Beng record his music and why? Jah Beng: I record with Kornerstone Productions because the musicians and other individuals who work with Kornerstone are among the very best at their craft. ReggaeX: What does Jah Beng do in his spare time? Jah Beng: Meditate, read, play football (i.e. soccer), jog, play basketball, got to the movies (once in a while). ReggaeX: Where can people find out more about Jah Beng and purchase his music? Jah Beng: They can do this at www.jahbeng.com and www.kornerstone.net. Thank you Donna Makeda for this opportunity.
