Compartment Review Presentation Traverse City Forest Management Unit Compartment Entry Year Acreage: County Management Area: 61027 2018 3,050 Benzie Benzie Outwash Revision Date: 2016-06-09 Stand Examiner: Craig Allen Legal Description: T25N- R14W; Sections 5-8, 17, 18 T25N- R15W, Sections 1, 2 Identified Planning Goals: Compartment 27 is a part of the Benzie Outwash management area (MA). Vegetation management in this MA will provide forest products; maintain or enhance wildlife habitat; protect areas of unique character, including the Betsie River which is a designated natural river; and threatened, endangered and special concern species and provide for forest-based recreational uses and Native American non-commercial uses of forest products. Timber management for the next 10 years includes improving the age-class distribution of aspen and red pine. Northern hardwoods management includes continued selective or regeneration harvesting of northern hardwoods to achieve an uneven age-class structure or improve timber quality. Wildlife management objectives include increasing the structural complexity of northern hardwood communities for interior forest species and perpetuating early-successional communities for species adapted to young forests. Expected trends in this 10-year planning period are increased recreational pressure on recreational trails and introduced insect and disease concerns, especially emerald ash borer and beech bark disease. Soil and topography: The topography is mostly level. The west portions of sections 6 and 7 break over a steep side hill that parallels the Betsie River. Banks along the Betsie River tend to be steep and high; being ten feet or greater. The upland areas consist of the well drained Kalkaska- Rubicon soil association. Lowland areas of wet and semi- wet flats are made up of permeable Roscommon - Augres- Croswell soils. Mucks are made up mainly of Carlisle/Carbondale soils types. Ownership Patterns, Development, and Land Use in and Around the Compartment: To the north and west of the compartment lies private land and to the south and east lies State lands. The private lands in the area have many residential homes and continue to experience much land fragmentation. There are vacation and retirement homes in the area. There are nine platted subdivisions within the compartment. Three of these subdivisions have total State ownership. The remainder has a few scattered out lots in private ownership. Three of these locations have cabins built upon. The lots are all very small in size and many are not surveyed. The State should pursue the purchase of the lots (lots without structures) to continue to block-in State ownership making land management easier, providing better access and allowing more contiguous land area for Public enjoyment and use. Unique Natural Features: The Betsie River flows through the west side of this compartment. There are many springs in the compartment that flow into the river. The Betsie is a designated Michigan Natural River system. The designation begins at the Grass Lake Dam, then extending downstream to its mouth at Betsie Lake. The Homestead dam and its adjacent lands are also located within this compartment. Archeological, Historical, and Cultural Features: Early Native Americans would commonly establish settlements along the Betsie River. Also, there are a few old homestead sites within the compartment. Special Management Designations or Considerations: There are no special management designations within this compartment. Other management considerations involve all proposed treatments (see attached). Watershed and Fisheries Considerations: The Betsie River and a number of small, spring creek tributaries to the Betsie River flow through Compartment 27. The Betsie River and all of the small tributaries are Designated Trout Streams, with populations of coho salmon, Chinook salmon, brown trout, and steelhead. Brown trout are stocked by Fisheries Division annually into the Betsie River by 06/09/2016 10:42:41 AM - Page 1 of 3 POLEYN Fisheries Division. The spring creek tributaries also likely have populations of brook trout. The Betsie River is a StateDesignated Natural River, so Natural Rivers standards must be adhered to when working within 400’ of the Betsie River. The stretch of the Betsie River between Homestead Dam and US-31 is very heavily fished seasonally by wading anglers for steelhead and salmon. (Fisheries Division, Cadillac) Wildlife Habitat Considerations: State land in this compartment is situated on an outwash plain of dry sandy soils that support areas of aspen and mixed hardwoods. Forests in this landscape are typically influenced by wildfire; however parts of this landscape were at times shielded from fire to a degree. Consequently, some management for successionally advanced hardwood/white pine stands is fitting to this compartment. Hardwood treatments should incorporate the preservation of within-stand tree species diversity, the retention of mature mast producing trees, and the protection of den, cavity, retention of tops, and downed trees. Many wildlife species, including broad-winged hawks, wild turkeys, southern flying squirrels, eastern gray squirrels, and Baltimore orioles, are associated with these forest types. This compartment also has a history of aspen cutting. Such early successional management should be continued on historically fire prone landscapes, with additional aspen harvests scheduled this period in order to increase age class diversity. The incorporation of snags, leave trees, and downed logs, tops, and other material in these cuts will help to increase wildlife use by species like grouse, woodcock, golden-winged warbler, deer, and to replicate a wildfire-altered forest. Some pine plantations are also found here. Where possible, hardwoods should be encouraged within these plantations for within stand diversity. When possible, a 2-5 acre island within a mature plantation could be left relatively un-thinned to provide winter roosting cover for turkeys. These roosts should be located near adequate winter food sources. Openings are an important part of this dry and fire prone landscape. The southeastern and eastern extents of this compartment contain multiple openings and low density deciduous (LDD) stands. Many of these LDD stands were classified as upland brush communities, but as existing trees mature and additional woody species colonize the area these stands would eventually succeed to forested stands in the absence of fire or other natural phenomena. These nonforested stands, along with adjacent forested habitat types provide habitat for many species of wildlife native to this fire prone land type association (LTA). Therefore, opening maintenance will continue in the compartment to restore and maintain this matrix of various non-forested through forested types for the benefit of associated species such as cedar waxwing, deer, wild turkey, mourning dove, meadow vole, or red fox. (Wildlife Division, Traverse City) Mineral Resource and Development Concerns and/or Restrictions Surface sediments consist of glacial outwash sand and gravel and postglacial alluvium. The glacial drift thickness varies between 400 and 800 feet. Beneath the glacial drift are the Devonian Ellsworth and Antrim Shales. These shales are used for cement products. A gravel pit is located two miles to the north and there should be some potential. This area is located just north of the Niagaran reef trend and is in an area of Antrim Shale leasing and development. All of the State mineral rights in the Compartment are leased for oil and gas development. (Tom Hoane, DNR Geologist, 9/07/06). Vehicle Access: There are many gravel and seasonal county roads throughout the compartment within this area offering good access to State lands. There are also many forest “2-track” roads in various areas of the compartment that are in good condition and are used for public and DNR land management accessibility. Due to rough conditions, there may be a need for some road repair work to a few locations on forest 2-track roads located in section 18. Survey Needs: There are a few survey needs to establish the location of private land corners and boundaries within this compartment. Recreational Facilities and Opportunities: Snowmobile Trail #3 utilizes Landis Rd along the southern edge of this compartment, then turns N/S bisecting the compartment using Begold Rd, then turns east onto Harvest Rd. While this snowmobile trail is located on county roads, trail protection specifications should be considered if hauling occurs during the winter season (T.N. 1/26/16, Parks and Recreation Division, Cadillac) Fire Protection: This area has wildfire protection by Thompsonville Fire Department and the DNR Platte River and Traverse City Field Offices. Access is acceptable in this compartment, and there is only a minor history of wildfire. The majority of this compartment is a hardwood type, so the opportunity for a large fire is minimal. Urban Interface is not a major concern. Additional Compartment Information: (N1/2S1/2NWSW). tier of the compartment could be considered for purchase if they become available. Purchase of these lands would further help to block in State ownership of land within this compartment, thereby making land management easier with better 06/09/2016 10:42:41 AM - Page 2 of 3 POLEYN access and allowing more contiguous land area for Public enjoyment and use. Unit Compartment: 27 Year of Entry 2018 Report 6 – EXISTING SPECIAL CONSERVATION AREA DETAILS * This is a list of SCA's for this compartment along with a 1/4 mile buffer surrounding the compartment. Refer to the Special Conservation Area Map for locations of the below listed Conservation Areas. Conservation Area Type Description ERA = Ecological Reference Area HCVA = High Conservation Value Area SCA = Special Conservation Area SCA Cold Water Lake A coldwater lake has temperature and dissolved oxygen conditions that allow naturally-reproduced or stocked trout populations and those of other coldwater fish species to persist from year to year. Suitable conditions for coldwater fishes may occur in Michigan lakes if they are relatively deep, have substantial groundwater inflows, or are located in colder (northern) areas of the state. Such lakes are established by Director's action and designated as trout resources by Fisheries Order 200. SCA Cold Water Stream A coldwater stream has temperature and dissolved oxygen conditions that allow naturally-reproduced or stocked trout populations and those of other coldwater fish species (e.g., slimy sculpin) to persist from year to year. Coldwater streams in Michigan typically provide these conditions due to substantial contributions of groundwater to their stream flows. Such streams are established by Director's action and designated as trout resources by Fisheries Order 210. SCA Riparian Area A transitional area between aquatic and terrestrial ecosystems in which the terrestrial ecosystem influences the aquatic ecosystem and vice-versa. Because of the unique conditions adjacent to lakes, streams and open water wetlands, riparian areas harbor a high diversity of plants and wildlife. Riparian communities are ecologically and socially significant in their effects on water quality and quantity, as well as aesthetics, habitat, bank stability, timber production, and their contribution to overall biodiversity. HCVA Natural Rivers There are two Natural Rivers datasets which are derived from spatial buffers set from an established and approved distance from the river centerlines. The Natural Rivers Zoning District is a 400 foot buffer for most Natural Rivers. The Vegetative Buffer ranges from 25 to 100 feet. To view specific Zoning Districts and Vegetative Buffers for each Natural River see the table located on the I:\Documentation\GDSE data folder. 06/09/2016 10:41:08 AM - Page 1 of 1 S t a n d Report 7 – Forested Stands Traverse City Mgt.
