The CHIP curriculum details an eight week community based therapeutic lifestyle changing program offered as 2 evening classes per week that assists participants in preventing or reversing serious chronic illnesses-Coronary Artery Disease, Diabetes, Hypertension, High Cholesterol and other physical challenges with a very low fat diet, moderate regular exercise, stress management and group support. Similar to much more expensive retreat based programs (Ornish, Pritikin, McDougall), over 50,000 people have completed this curriculum with published effective results. (www.chiphealth.com) Many people are unaware that with lifestyle changes, one can actually reverse hardening of the arteries and reduce or stop many medications. Knowledge is power and this program truly teaches one how to make the recommended changes in a fun atmosphere. NEXT SESSION: Sept. 24-Nov.18, 2010. 2009 ANNUAL REPORT-THE MAPLE CENTER, INC. 2009 ANNUAL REPORT-THE MAPLE CENTER, INC. (PAGE 23) Future Goals of The Maple Center Executive Director’s Annual letter As I reflected on 2009 at The Maple Center (TMC) I remembered a quote of Anne Frank, “How wonderful it is that nobody need wait a single moment before starting to improve the world.” Add new program-CHIP Review and revise By-Laws Expand volunteer assistance Increase grant writing and secure program funding Support Maternal Health Clinic and Breastfeeding Coalition of the Wabash Valley Establish collaboration with community organizations and businesses Promote name recognition of The Maple Center and community support of the nonprofit Continue collaboration with Coleman Cancer Foundation to bring integrative services to Wabash Valley cancer survivors Enhance and expand John Black Memorial Library services and use During this past year as Executive Director I had the privilege of working with individuals who seem to have this sentiment as their daily mantra. When there was a need, or request for their time, expertise, talent or financial support they responded “Yes!” Despite very busy lives and/or personal health challenges, all gave of their time, talent, expertise and finances to "improve the world" by putting into action their commitment to the residents of our community through their involvement in the Maple Center. Starting with The Maple Center's eclectic board of directors-each member brings to TMC board meetings and programs their unique gifts. Being the only staff person this year afforded me opportunities to learn to rely on others. An example is the planning of the 2010 Celebration of Life program for breast cancer survivors/patients. These breast cancer survivors have participated in TMC's programs and they are TMC's best cheerleaders-not only promoting but also volunteering their time, talents and finances to develop the Komen grant programs. In addition to planning, programs require time and energy to assemble materials. The Union Hospital Service League, affectionately referred to as the “Golden Foldies” demonstrated joy filled camaraderie during what could have been tedious work. Other volunteers said “yes” to my requests for help and student volunteers were not only helpful but also brought a fresh perspective with their idealism and desire to contribute to their community. During 2009 The Maple Center was fortunate to have community and business partners and these fine supporters are recognized on page 17 of this Annual Report. Contributions by community partners and businesses reduce the financial burden and enrich The Maple Center’s programs. Financial support in the forms of personal donations and grants are the foundation of TMC’s ability to provide unique integrative health community programs and clinical services. Many individuals consistently give generously to TMC. In 2009-2010 grant awards included: Art Reach, Duke Energy, Susan G. Komen for the Cure Wabash Valley Affiliate, and the March of Dimes. The Maple Center is grateful for every personal, business donation, and grant award. As I reflect on 2009 I am filled with gratitude for the which divided the tasks and multiplied the successes and for opportunities to get to know some of you. I am looking forward to putting into action the possibilities of future TMC programs. I invite you to consider joining The Maple Center team as a volunteer and experience its growth first hand. The continued success of The Maple Center depends upon each of us! As you reflect on 2009 and continue to make plans for 2010 remember “nobody need wait a single moment before starting to improve the world.” Wishing you healing & health! (PAGE 3) Board Chair’s Letter Friends of The Maple CenterThank you for your contributions of time, talent and treasure that have allowed The Maple Center programs to thrive in 2009. Because of you, these pages document the education and services brought to the Wabash Valley by The Maple Center. Melissa Geib, our new executive director has provided trusted stability and many hours of dedicated service in this year of consolidation and frugal reorganization. The Board has worked hard to write grants, offer programs, and provide creative fundraising. We are grateful for continued funding through grantors: Komen Race for the Cure-Wabash Valley Affiliate, Arts Illiana, the Hux Foundation, The Coleman Cancer Center’s Foundation, and the donors listed within. We are delighted that the Midwife Practice has added full-time nurse midwife Helen Beane, CNM and part-time ISU professor, Marcee Everly, CNM, ND to Anne Mishler, CNM’s now five year old practice. Women in our community now have expanded options for empowering family centered maternity and birth care at Union Hospital because they are here. One of The Maple Center’s purposes—“To support and assist the Union Hospital Maternal Health Clinic in delivering nurse midwives to the Wabash Valley”-has definitely been accomplished. The Maple Center Clinical Practices have also welcomed Sandra Hendrich, DPT-Physical Therapist with Chinese medicine training, Tracy Richardson, MS, Music Therapist, and Michael Tindera, PA-C, who specializes in Pain Care An exciting new focus will fulfill one of our original purposes-“To offer lifestyle transforming educational programs and support groups for men and women.” Details about the CHIP (Coronary Health Improvement Project) are contained within. We look forward to 2010 and to the opportunity to bring Integrative Health (the Best of Modern Medicine combined with the best of Complementary Care) options to you. (PAGE INC. 7) Maternity Services The Union Hospital Maternal Health Clinic (MHC) is celebrating its 5 th year in our location at One Professional Centre. We have a full staff with Marcee Everly, CNM, Helen Beane, CNM, Mickey Phelps, LPN, and Rachel Foster, sonographer joining us within the past year. Centering Pregnancy Prenatal Care was initiated again and groups of expectant families are coming together for care to learn and discuss various educational topics such as breastfeeding, labor and birth, relaxation, and baby care. We recently received word that we are the recipients of a March of Dimes Community Chapter Grant to provide Centering Pregnancy at the MHC and educational programs with the Minority Health Coalition of Vigo County. Our incentive program has grown, and our clients have taken advantage of the opportunity to get free baby and household items from The Helping Hands organization for choosing healthy behaviors. We have displayed MHC services at several local health fairs, and educational programs. Anne Mishler, CNM and Dr Kathleen Stienstra have spoken within the community on pertinent topics related to healthy families and birth to gain exposure for the clinic. With the help from a grant from the Lilly Foundation, a program for families was presented at the Landsbaum Center. The Baby Blanket drive was very successful, and our babies are certainly “Wrapped in Love.” We had over 100 blankets donated, many of which came from Union Hospital employees. The MCH continue to work very closely with the Family Medicine Residency Program. Doctors from this program come to the clinic daily to provide continuity maternity care. The MCH received a grant from the Wabash Valley Community Foundation for $4,700 for Smoking Cessation aids, Prenatal Care Coordination services for families that are not US citizens, and travel costs that are incurred by our prenatal care coordinator. We also received $3,675 from past donors of the Neighborhood Assistance Program. A grant amounting to $23,000 was received from the Indiana Chapter of the March of Dimes to continue our Centering Pregnancy program which is a form of group prenatal care. We have also started having “Baby Showers” with the Minority Health Coalition of Vigo Co. We will be having four programs throughout the next year that will provide education on parenting and prenatal care while resembling a baby shower—food, fun, and education. The MCH was very active in the flu season by serving as a site for expectant mothers to receive the H1N1 vaccine. We provided the vaccine to over 460 expectant mothers and caregivers this year in coordination with the Vigo County Health Department. It has been a busy and productive five years. The Maternal Health Clinic and Heartland Midwives are blessed with a caring and professional staff. We are proud of the care that is given to our women and families. 2009 ANNUAL REPORT-THE MAPLE CENTER, INC.(PAGE 8) 2009 Maple Center Balance Sheet General Funds Equity Funds Memorial Funds Komen Grant Breastfeeding Coalition John Black Memorial Library General Funds - Equity Funds Fundraiser: Raffle Account Accounts Receivable Property & Equipment Other Assets Total Operating Funds Coleman Cancer Foundation Operating Account $ 128,257.95 $ 80,164.92 $ 5,741.50 $ 932.78 $ 768.24 $ 48,093.03 $ 197.00 $ .00 $ .00 $ .00 $ 48,290.03 $ 50,907.38 The Maple Center serves as the nonprofit home for: Breastfeeding Coalition of the Wabash Valley Coleman Cancer Center Foundation Memorial Funds Established at The Maple Center: Virgil Auen Memorial Fund John Black Memorial Library Fund Patrick M.
