MAPLE SOUTH
Volume 7 Issue 7 July 2014 MESSAGE FROM THE MFSC MAPLE SOUTH YOUR FAMILY SERVICES NEWSLETTER How do you say goodbye? You don’t. The older you become the sooner you realize it really is a small world after all. (yes even Disney will miss me based on the number of times I’ve been there is the last year.) We think we are resilient, adjust easily and after years of experience can pick up and move every few years with little effort. That couldn’t be further from the truth. We know the in’s and out’s, the pros and cons of the military life style but in fact for many, as we get older, it becomes harder. Where are the roots you are suppose to set down, how many family reunions do we miss, how many deployments, TD’s and training months have we missed spouses? The adjustments are endless but at the end of the day we are a part of a much bigger family, the military family. We may not be related but we are all in this together. We depend on each others experience, knowledge, things we’ve failed at and a shoulder now and then to lean on. This is what keeps us strong and prepares us for the next big adventure. I have a much better understanding of what my parents (dad who spent 43 years, military and foreign service in 8 different countries) went through brining up a family living out of suitcases for your entire career. It’s come full circle. In the last four years I’ve now seen all sides of the military having for the first time been the ‘spouse’ of a military member and worked as a civilian for the military as opposed to wearing the uniform. It’s been incredible being able to bridge the gap and see the military lifestyle truly from another perspective. It is equally important to have strong and healthy families to support the military members in the success of their mission. Now it’s time to depart knowing someday I will venture back. Perhaps as a military spouse once again, simply a tourist or even a ‘snowbird’. Who could stay away from truly some of the most beautiful beaches I’ve seen. There are to many things that I will miss. I was married Inside this Issue Message from here, I’m most definitely going to miss that Mouse, I fell in the CCPC love with riding, the beach, Sweet Magnolia’s, the true On Base sweet southern charm and hospitality and the list goes on. In Town & The The next chapter! Robyn will now take the reins and help in turning the focus of the MFS into a new and exciting adventure. Her own perspective and creativity will aid in the transition of Tyndall Military Family Services. Remember we are a family and I know that the family I may be leaving behind is the same that will help to Robyn in the quest of great family service. I may be biased but this year’s farewell was the gosh darndist best I’ve been to. There was something for everyone. Special thanks to Paradise Adventures and MCpl Parent for putting together a fantastic day and great way to say farewell. The weather was perfect and even the dolphins came out. There was everything from paddle boards and kayaks to big kid toys and the ultimate banana ride! There was something for everyone and if you weren’t up for the adventure there was a server on board ready for your order so you could kick back and relax on the beach or on the front of the boat. VOLUME 7 ISSUE 6 “Maple South Page 6 Family Farewell Later in the day with Scott and Maryse as gracious hosts they put on an incredible spread that keep you full for days to come. Along with a few mug outs, some jammin and karaoke, the house was filled with laughter, camaraderie and a great community that will be missed. Keep the bond close and never forget no matter where any of us go we are still ’family’. It has been an annual tradition within the RCAF of getting together to say farewell to our Unit members who are posted out to other glorious locations. Sadly (more so for those departing) it is that time of year when we must bid a fond farewell to some of our members who are posted back to the “Great White North”. In accordance with tradition, the members’ immediate supervisors get to toast (roast) the departing members with many amusing anecdotes about the member’s experiences while at the unit. This is usually followed by the member receiving a mug of his favorite beverage, that they are requested to drink prior to them being allowed to recant any of stories just told. Then the members get to provide a few anecdotes about the people that are staying, to thank everyone for their enjoyable time at Tyndall and beg one last time to stay a little longer. This year we are not only saying goodbye to seven of our members but also to their families as well! This year we will celebrate their departure with a family outing with Paradise Island Adventures for a day in the surf and sun (it may be awhile before the departing families can enjoy this again). We will thank the families for all their hard work within the local community and for making Tyndall a better place for all that remain! We can honestly say they will be sorely missed by all (but not for too long, as in a few weeks we will be welcoming their replacements into the Tyndall family). History Lesson for the Day! Do you know what the true meaning of military BRAT? In the National Defense University in DC lies a book written in 1921 that explains the origin of the term military BRAT. It originally came from the British army. A member of the army was assigned abroad and could take his family. They would go as BRAT status. It stood for British Regiment Attached Traveler. As time went on it was solely referred to only the children of the member. It is today a phrase that is used world wide.
