Maple Academy Program Admission Guide Qualicum School District www.maincanada.ca School District No. 69 Qualicum Qualicum International Student Programs The Qualicum School District is centrally situated on east Vancouver Island and serves a student population of approximately 10,000 students. There are eight elementary schools (Grades K-7), two secondary schools (Grades 8-12), an alternate school (PASS/Woodwinds) and a Distributed Learning program to support home-learning families called the Collaborative Education Alternative Program (CEAP). School District 69 welcomes international students from grade 8 to 12 into our schools. Parents, seniors, peer and intergenerational mentors can be found in various programs throughout our district. Our communities support our schools in a variety of ways. Support for school events, fundraisers, and scholarships for graduating international students all point to the phenomenal support our students and schools have from businesses, organizations, service groups and individuals. Parksville is described as the “mid-island” area because it is proximate to most of the densely populated cities in Vancouver Island. The mild and temperate climate of Parksville allows people to enjoy a broad range of outdoor activities all year-round. Parksville is one of the main hubs for major transportation, which enables it to be a thriving city for being economically active and a popular holiday destination. Residents, especially families with their children, who have chosen to live in Parksville highly value its spectacular natural environment and high quality of life. I Our Location Maple Academy Canada Kwalikum Secondary School www.maincanada.ca Kwalikum Secondary School (KSS) is one of two secondary schools (high schools) in our district. KSS is located in Qualicum Beach and a five-minute walk from the heart of our quaint downtown core featuring shops, restaurants, Ravensong Pool, the Civic Centre, our lovely Town Hall and local library. There are 700 students enrolled at KSS, of which 50-60 are accepted as international students from around the world including: Germany, Mexico, Hong Kong, Taiwan, Korea, Brazil, Thailand, France, Spain, Vietnam, Columbia, Italy, Czech Republic, Japan and China. There is a dedicated International Student Program (ISP) counsellor based at the school to ensure that students in the program receive the advise and support they need to transition successfully into our secondary school program. The Soccer Academy addresses the academic and athletic needs of students who either play, or desire to play, soccer at high level. Player development is central to the program. Technical and tactical ability and individual player development within a team setting is the focus supported by the Director of Instruction, Shel Brodsgaard, a former Canadian National Player, Coach and Head Video Technician for Toronto FC of the MLS. For students wishing to fully immerse themselves in the world of golf there is no better place than Parksville/ Qualicum Beach. This region is a mecca for golfers with seven local courses to choose from. Our Golf Academy program provides golf swing instruction by a PGA professional, as well as lessons in golf etiquette, course management and tournament play. Students will also be introduced to the operations side of the golf world with instruction in tournament management, retail sales and golf resort management. Our district Music Academy programs are nationally recognized and taught by talented music specialists. The programs place an emphasis on participating in regional and national competitions, and students can receive both individual instruction as well as participate in larger ensembles including: concert band, jazz band, concert and jazz choirs. Maple Academy Canada Ballenas Secondary School www.maincanada.ca Ballenas Secondary School (BSS) is one of two secondary schools (high schools) in our district. BSS is located in the small, waterfront city of Parksville and features a beautiful, sheltered, sandy beach and extensive natural parks and trails. BSS is committed to providing students with a common core of learning opportunities, and to creating a learning environment which recognizes, understands and appreciates the students' individual and collective intellectual, emotional, physical, and social needs. There are 1,000 students enrolled at BSS, of which 65-75 will be accepted as international students from around the world including: Germany, Mexico, Hong Kong, Taiwan, Korea, Brazil, Thailand, France, Spain, Vietnam, Columbia, Italy, Czech Republic, Japan and China. There is a dedicated International Student Program (ISP) counsellor based at the school to ensure that students in the program receive the advice and support they need to transition successfully into our secondary school program. Specialized courses and programs for students including locally developed curriculum in: Marine Biology, Leadership, Outdoor Education, Hockey & Soccer Programs. Ballenas Secondary also boasts a comprehensive Fine Arts program including Musical Theatre, Drama, Photography, Video Production, Concert Band, Glee Choir, Jazz Ensemble and Guitar studies. The Ballenas Music program has a proud tradition of Concert Band, Jazz, and Vocal performing ensembles. BSS is also proud to have a comprehensive guitar program, with students studying the bass, electric, classical, acoustic guitars at every level of ability. BSS even offers instruction on Ukulele and Banjo for interested students. Extra-curricular sport programs at the school include opportunities to participate in volleyball, basketball and soccer. An American Football Program is also offered by the district, with Junior Varsity and Senior ‘AA’ Varsity level teams taking the field. Former team members have gone on to play for both university and professional (CFL) teams. Maple Academy Canada Our Program www.maincanada.ca Our program is focused on providing the best educational support for students pursuing post-secondary education in the most reputable universities (including their first choice universities) around the globe after high school graduation. All students are required to stay at our dormitory or with a Canadian host family. It is also mandatory to attend our academic program in Maple Academy Learning Center. The entire program is designed to help students develop English language proficiency, obtain a good GPA at school and assist all the aspects of university admission process. Attendance at a Canadian Public School You will attend a Public School in our area and have access to a full complement of academic and elective courses, English language training, post-secondary preparation and counseling, as necessary, to help you successfully complete your studies and graduate from a public high school in Canada. Living at the Dormitory Our dormitory is a place that you will be able to call “My Second Home”. As our supervisors stay with you on site, for 24 hours a day, you will have instant and compassionate support which is very important for the success of your stay. Our building has all the facilities for your comfort and convenience. Of course, it’s a secure building with all the safety features and close to city amenities. Living with a Canadian Host Family As an international student, you may live in a community homestay arranged by school district, where you will be welcomed into the lives of selected host families and involved in their day-to-day lives and social activities. Intensive After-School Program Our tailored after-school program helps you achieve high academic performance on any school subjects and other necessary exams including IELTS, SAT, and TOEFL. The program is focused on developing all aspects of English language proficiency as well as providing other necessary academic supports. Students are taught in groups within the context of their common needs and interests. However, customized one-on-one tutoring may be provided for additional cost. Our professional teachers and staff will analyze students’ progress regularly using our reporting system in a precise manner. Students and parents will be able to verify what they have learned, their strengths and weaknesses, and the next steps for improvement in their monthly report cards.
