Dear Parents and Carers
I am writing this after seeing our wonderful
Year 7s off on their Into the Woods adventure. They have been a fantastic addition to
our school and already the school will seem a
little diminished without them being here
today.
As we move into October, we start to get into the hard work
of examination preparation. After 5 years of continuous improvement with key elements of outstanding exam performance, this year has been more mixed.
At A Level, some stunning performance and excellent grades
have been balanced by one or two disappointments, however,
every student who wanted to go to university went to their
choice of university. AS Level has been very good and in fact
has been one of our best years which bodes well for next
year’s examination results.
At GCSE we have had mixed results. Most areas such as Maths,
Art and Geography continue to be outstanding. Results in English Literature, RE, PE etc, have all gone well. However, we
have had to ask for considerable re-marks in some areas and
our faith in exam boards, while never total, has been shaken
further. In Business Studies we demanded a total remark of our
coursework as we knew there was a discrepancy in the results.
This led to all 96 students’ grades going up, one from D to A!
This is unfathomable. There is also a review being undertaken
of Modern Languages results and 70 re-marks were also ordered for English Language which has been a disappointment
this year. This will affect our headline figures in the very last
year of measuring 5 A*-C with English Language and Maths.
Next year English Literature replaces English Language in the
new headline figure calculation. Using English Literature in the
calculation this year puts our results in the high 70%s.
So our general trends continue to be good, we have identified
areas where we need to work more closely with the exam
boards and our predictions and estimates are that next year
will be a buoyant year for examination results.
We have had a brilliant start to the year. We just need now to
prepare our young people to be optimistic, ambitious, and well
supported both in school and at home as the winter months
arrive.

We are currently organising road safety assemblies
for all students with Warwickshire Police and road
safety officers.
To ensure the message gets through, we’d like to
ask you to talk through with your child the rights
of way on cycle paths, particularly the cycle way
along Myton Road from Leamington. Cyclists need
to be very vigilant and should always stop at junctions as cars turning in and out of side roads have
the right of way.
We have had reports of near misses and students
taking risks on the roads to and from school and
we want our students to be safe.
CYCLE HELMETS
One of our students had a fall from his bike on the
way to school last week. Fortunately he wasn’t
seriously hurt, largely due to the fact he was wearing a helmet. His mum has asked us to join her in
urging more of our students to wear protective
headgear when cycling to and from school.
She has highlighted this article in the Telegraph as a
good way of raising awareness. As the author of
the article says, “It is an irrefutable scientific fact
that you only get one head. So, look after it and
wear a helmet.”

MYTON MAKES AN IMPACT IN PERU
Back in July, Myton Sixth Form students, accompanied
by teachers, Mr Wolff and Miss Marchbank, travelled
to Peru for four weeks to teach English to Peruvian
primary school pupils.
The organisation they worked with, the Otra Cosa
Network, has written to express their thanks.
Peter Murphy from the Otra Cosa Network writes,
“Your students were so brilliant that, in the years that
I have directed the program, we have never come
across young people achieving so much in just three
weeks. They helped with the preparation, coordination, planning and delivering of the English classes to
these underprivileged Peruvian children.
“The children in Peru will always remember Myton
students as such a special group. I really hope this trip
is something they too will remember for the rest of
their lives.”

ARMY INSIGHT RESIDENTIAL COURSE
Is your child interested in a career in the army? Are they
aged 15-17? Army Insight are running a residential course
between Monday 23rd–Friday 27th November at
Swynnerton Camp in Staffordshire. It aims to give a good
idea of the reality of life in the services and the range of
careers available.
Our Army School Liaison Officer is coming into school
on Tuesday 13th October at lunchtime in the Conference
Room to brief interested students. Anyone who would
like to find out more is welcome to come along. You just
need to let Mrs Gerrard or Miss Durden know.

IMAGINEERING FAIR
DISCOUNTED TICKETS
The Imagineering Fair at the Ricoh Arena, Coventry is
a fabulous opportunity for the whole family to enjoy
fascinating, hands-on activities and to learn first hand
about technology in the world around us.
It includes everything from racing cars, rockets and
robots to electronics, 3D printing, lasers and mechanical challenges.
POETRY BALLOON FOUND
Prince the Springer Spaniel has found one of our
poetry balloons in a field near Welford Upon Avon.
Students who visited our Open Morning had the
chance to write their own haiku poems, all of which
were tied to balloons and released at the end of the
morning. We were delighted to hear from Prince’s
owner with the story of its landing place.

SIXTH FORM BURSARIES

COURTEOUS STUDENTS
We know that the vast majority of our students are
polite and courteous at all times.
However, we do sometimes have complaints from
members of the public about the behaviour of our
students on their way to and from school. We’d
urge you to take the time to remind your children
to be aware of other people and of the importance
of allowing them to use the path, pavement or cycle
way in a courteous manner.

SCHOOL CLUBS
ROBOTICS CLUB
This week Mrs Johnson, Lillie Cummings (O10) and
Hannah Possart (O1) have been hosting a lunchtime
exhibition of all the clubs available to lower school
students.
Robotics Club is aimed at Year 7, 8 and 9 students and
will be held on Tuesdays after school in S4.
Students have been able to find out all about clubs including Reading Club, Creative Writing Club, Robotics
Club, Orchestra, as well as all the sports clubs that we
run here at school.
There are a limited number of places – so please come
and speak to Mrs Jones in S4 (Mondays and Tuesdays)

NETBALL RESULTS
In matches against North Leamington School:
Year 8s won 7–2
Year 9s won 5–1
Year 10s won 7–1
Year 11s narrowly lost 1–4
RUGBY RESULTS
The Year 8 Rugby Team started their season with a 2914 win over Studley.
BASKETBALL RESULTS
The Sixth Form Basketball team were victorious in
their opening game of the season, beating Alcester
Grammar 61-51.
FOOTBALL RESULTS
The Year 8 team got their season underway with a 7-1
win over Aylesford School in the County Cup.
The Year 9 team beat Kenilworth in their league match
4-2 and beat Princethorpe 7-1 in the County Cup.
The Year 10 team won 3-2 in their County Cup match
vs Princethorpe.
SWIMMING RESULTS
The Intermediate Boys Swimming Team finished Runners Up in the East Midlands Schools Relay Championships.
Congratulations to Aran Shuttlewood, Ben Court, Ed
Jolley & Ronnie Harvey, who produced excellent times
in the Freestyle and Medley Relays.
They now await to see if their times are one of the top
20 times in the ountry. If so, they will compete in the
National Finals at the Aquatic Centre, Olympic Park,
London.
