It was well attended. Nineteen Thistles from New York, New Jersey, Connecticut and Vermont, representing eight yacht clubs, participated. The boats were launched from the New York State launch site in Moody. The skippers meeting was held at 11am, headed by race committee chairman David Hudson from the Saratoga Sailing Club. Three races were scheduled for the day. The first race was fairly short because the wind was light. The second race was the “Round the Islands” race around Birch and Bluff Islands. This race is unique in that the skippers must select whether they round the islands in a clockwise or counterclockwise direction. The wind was light to moderate during the race. The third race, run in good breezes, was longer than the first race, as the wind had increased. The races were completed by midafternoon and the boats were returned to the boat launch before 4pm. The first race was won by Britt Kaukeinen from Rochester. The second race was won by Steve Gruver from Bridgeport, CT and the third race was won by John Baker from Stanley, NY. All skippers, crew and race organizers were invited to a cook-out on Saturday evening at the Blue Jay Campground, organized by the competitors. It was well attended and successful and extended long into the evening. Races on Sunday were scheduled for 10am. All parties were present by 9am. The previous afternoon’s wind had died and there was not enough wind to race. The boats were not launched and everyone waited. Conditions were checked around the lake and all parts were calm. At 12 noon the race CHICKEN Saturday, Sept. 5th 4 pm Mt. Every glory that we associate with it is the result of duty done.” ~Calvin Colidge 2015 Silverado 3500
