Thistles return to Tupper Lake
by Elmer Richards
The
17th
annual
Lumberjack
Regatta
sponsored by the Rotary
Club of Tupper Lake was
held on Saturday and
Sunday, August 29 and 30.
It was well attended.
Nineteen Thistles from
New York, New Jersey,
Connecticut and Vermont,
representing eight yacht
clubs, participated.
The
boats
were
launched from the New
York State launch site
in Moody. The skippers
meeting was held at 11am,
headed by race committee
chairman David Hudson
from the Saratoga Sailing
Club.
Three races were
scheduled for the day. The
first race was fairly short
because the wind was light.
The second race was
the “Round the Islands”
race around Birch and Bluff
Islands. This race is unique
in that the skippers must
select whether they round
the islands in a clockwise
or
counterclockwise
direction. The wind was
light to moderate during
the race.
The third race, run in
good breezes, was longer
than the first race, as the
wind had increased.
The
races
were
completed
by
midafternoon and the boats
were returned to the boat
launch before 4pm.
The first race was won
by Britt Kaukeinen from
Rochester. The second race
was won by Steve Gruver
from Bridgeport, CT and
the third race was won by
John Baker from Stanley,
NY.
All skippers, crew and
race organizers were invited
to a cook-out on Saturday
evening at the Blue Jay
Campground, organized by
the competitors. It was well
attended and successful
and extended long into the
evening.
Races on Sunday
were scheduled for 10am.
All parties were present
by 9am.
The previous
afternoon’s
wind
had
died and there was not
enough wind to race. The
boats were not launched
and everyone waited.
Conditions were checked
around the lake and all
parts were calm.
At 12 noon the race

Webster, NY and crew Judy
and Adam Gesner.
Second place went
to skipper John Baker of
Stanley, NY and crew Joy
Baker and Leah Murray.

At the end of the
ceremony
the
sailors
thanked the organizers for
their efforts and expressed
appreciation for once again
having the opportunity to
sail in this yearly event.
A number of then
had or were intending to
visit the Wild Center to
experience Wild Walk.
Many of the sailors
compete in regattas all
over the United States, but
particularly enjoy coming
to experience the beauty
of the Adirondacks and
the friendliness of the
community.

Open to the public to encourage participation and
education when it comes to the disposal of the US Flag.
This event will be put on by the
TL Veterans of Foreign Wars Post #3120,
the American Legion Post #220 & the TL Honor Guard.
All community organizations are also encouraged to attend.
This is an incredible ceremony that will allow the public to
observe how we honor ourselves and our flags. Please bring any
flags that you wish to have disposed of. Again we encourage
all to attend this event to promote awareness and support those
who have defended their country and their flag.
“We identify the flag with almost everything we hold dear on
earth, peace, security, liberty, our family, our friends,
our home...But when we look at our flag and behold it
emblazoned with all our rights we must remember that it is
equally a symbol of our duties. Every glory that we associate
with it is the result of duty done.” ~Calvin Colidge
