The city has been divided into six CPZs, corresponding with the six squads in the uniformed patrolSouth division. If we can increase that possibility by making small improvements to homes or businesses, we can potentially deter the criminal activity,” said Police Chief Jack Carruth. Each strategy employs a slightly different method to send a clear message to criminals that a responsible person is nearby and their activity is not welcome. The South Salt Lake Police Department offers several community programs that provide education about how to prevent crime. Our officers are continually reaching out to our residents with programs such as: DARE, RadKIDS, Neighborhood Watch, Business Watch, Coffee with a Cop, and our PAL Program. Our department also offers several resources like CPTED inspections, extra patrol checks, and a crime tip hotline. All of us at the South Salt Lake Police Department are excited to move forward as the city grows, new residents, and businesses move in, our school programs glean new faces, and our partnerships become stronger. We look forward to your future input and support. Working together is what makes the difference. “Every society gets the kind of criminal it deserves; every community gets the kind of law enforcement it insists on.” - Robert F. Kennedy The Good Landlord Program Continues The South Salt Lake Police Department has been addressing crime concerns with rental properties since 2007 when the Good Landlord Program was created. For the past seven years Officer Paul McCullough has coordinated with local landlords, apartment complex managers, and officers to eliminate problems in a timely and efficient manner. Police Chief Jack Carruth said, “Since 2007 there has been a decrease in our overall crime rate. It isn’t hard to see that the Good Landlord Program has made a significant impact.” The police department continues to partner with the city’s Business Licensing Department (Community Development) and the Utah Apartment Association to train and educate multi-housing property owners about crime prevention techniques, liability concerns, the eviction process, and other related topics. South Salt Lake Citizen Corps Citizen Corps is a nationwide organization that oversees and coordinates community volunteer programs. United Way 2-1-1 Business Watch: Keeping Your Business and Neighborhood Safe Most victims of crime do not realize that property crimes, such as burglary and theft, are generally crimes of opportunity. Criminals tend to look for a door that can be easily opened and seek out dark places left unattended. These situations make it easier for criminals. Think safety and security first, take the extra precautions to safeguard your business, and partner with your neighboring businesses to keep an eye out for suspicious and criminal behavior. This will help reduce crimes of opportunity and risks to your business, employees, and customers. The South Salt Lake Police Department would like to provide local businesses and employees with the education and knowledge to reduce crime. Contact the Crime Prevention Unit at 801.412.3653 to schedule a free evaluation of your business. Crime Prevention Recommendations Below is a list of vulnerable spots that a criminal may find appealing. This list was created to reduce chances of being a victim of crime. Take a minute to walk around and evaluate the vulnerability of your business. Front of building: • Are the street numbers visible from the road? • Is the business clearly marked with the name and type of business? • Is the public entrance open and inviting to customers? • Is the lobby/office visible from the street or parking area? • Are the front windows free of posters and obstructions? • If open at night, does the building have good lighting? • Are there displays outside or next to the door that would be an easy theft? • Is presence of an alarm system visible? • Are security cameras installed? • What type of doors and locks are present? • Where are the check-out counter and cash register in proximity to the door? Sides of building: • Is access restricted to employees from the side entrances? • Is there adequate lighting? • Is the parking lot clearly marked or restricted to employees only? • Is there a secured, fenced area? • What is stored in the secured area that could be attractive to criminals? Rear of building: • What type of entrance is there? • Who is allowed to enter the building from the rear and is access controlled? • Is the street address at the rear of the building in case of an emergency? • Are there items accessible to assist criminals in their activities? (i.e. ladders, crow bars, stackable items, etc.) • Where are utility boxes and fuse panels located? Inside of building: • Where are the public restrooms located? • Do employees know the Police/Fire dispatch numbers, or are the numbers posted in a visible area? • Is a company policy in place that describes what to do in case of robbery, theft, or emergency? • Who closes and locks the business? • Do employees know how to use the alarm system properly? • Is money secured in a safe at night or deposited at a bank at the end of the day? • Is there roof access? Is it secured? • Do employees verify identification for check and credit card purchases? • Does the alarm company make nightly patrols of the building? • How current is the business’ insurance? • Are the make, model, and serial numbers for valuables written down? • Are confidential files locked in cabinets or stored in a password protected section of the computer system? • Are computer files properly backed up? 2-1-1 is an easy to remember phone number that can connect individuals and families in our community to resources to fill in the gaps and meet their most important needs 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. The new zoning for the neighborhood along the S-Line streetcar from State Street to 500 East is under consideration by South Salt Lake City Council. After two years of meetings with neighbors, developers, and city leaders, zoning for new development in the neighborhood has been shaped. The zoning encourages housing focused on the “missing middle” types that are in demand today - townhomes, condos, and small apartment buildings. The plan also outlines open space requirements, areas where new restaurants, small shops and services, and small office spaces would be allowed. The zoning is written with an emphasis on the size, shape, and location of new buildings to minimize impacts on existing homes, which are not being re-zoned or affected. Increasing the amount of open space in the neighborhood is another focus, with emphasis on continuing to develop the S-Line corridor greenway, which includes Parley’s Trail. The zoning will be presented to City Council on September 3 & 17 and is currently scheduled for a vote on the October 8 meeting (subject to change). The City Council welcomes public comments.
