THE
CHAIRMAN’S CORNER with
'DYLG5\PHU
As we begin the 2010 year for the Chamber of Commerce, we should start by
giving thanks and celebrating the past. The Chamber must begin with a standing
ovation for Chris Adams and his tenure as 2009 Chairman. Secondly, I would
like to thank his wife, Meloyne, for supporting him during this time, as well as
his employer, Athens Federal Community Bank, for allowing him the freedom to
serve the community in this way. Chris has been a force of progress. His
leadership within the Chamber will show positive results and effective change in
Athens for years to come. Chris, a native Athenian, has been an excellent
promoter of the Chamber and the City of Athens. Thank you, Chris for your
time, talents and energy you provided to help keep Athens on the road to being a
growing and vibrant community.
When we reflect over the 64th Annual Chamber Dinner Meeting, we are
reminded of all the great people of Athens and of their efforts in excellence. This
year we had an exceptional group of award winners and I would like to
congratulate each one:
Business Professional Woman of the Year, Meredith Willson
Chairman’s Award, Patti Greek
Diplomat of the Year, Becky Wattenbarger
Farmer of the Year, Robert Thompson
Man of the Year, Burkett Witt
Mother of the Year, Judy Jones Sullins
Teacher of the Year, Beth Caulfield
Young Man of the Year, Stuart Sullins
Each of these people not only showed excellence in their respective areas, but
each are active Athenians whether coaching ball teams, serving community
clubs and groups, or their church. When you cross paths with any of these
individuals, please congratulate them and then remind yourself—strive for
excellence.
With all that is going on in the world today I have often heard, “Well, it’s just
the economy,” or “There just aren’t any jobs.” We need to not allow that to
become our acceptance to fail, but embrace it as a challenge to succeed. Let this
be our beginning of the best times, and set the foundation for success in the
changing world of our tomorrows. I would like to challenge each of you to
make 2010 your best year yet with creativity, honesty and hard work.
Tomorrow, February 12th, the Chamber is honored to welcome Dave
Ramsey. He is a noted author, radio and television personality with a message
we can all use today. He has a message of a self-reliant, responsible approach to
money management with lots of practical application for your life. Once again,
take this opportunity to gather together and be inspired to live a principled life.
This is a new year and I want to encourage you to let us know how we are
doing at the Athens Area Chamber of Commerce. We welcome your comments
and suggestions for improvement. Thank you, in advance, for your help in the
coming year. I look forward to serving you!

Founded in 1967, the SERVPRO franchise system is a national leader and
provider of fire and water cleanup and restoration services and mold mitigation and
remediation. SERVPRO’s professional services network of more than 1,500
individually owned and operated franchises responds to property damage
emergencies ranging from small individual disasters to multi-million dollar large-loss
situations. Providing coverage in 48 states, the SERVPRO system has established
relationships with major insurance companies and commercial clients, as well as
individual homeowners. All SERVPRO franchises are independently owned and
operated.
The owners of the McMinn, Monroe and Polk franchise, John and Mary Fowler,
graduated from TN Temple University in Chattanooga, TN. They were interested in
the SERVPRO system and fell in love with the Athens area. John and Mary
opened their franchise in October of 2007. John and Mary are joined by Scott
Campbell, Marketing Representative and Office Manager, Jackie Nunley. John
said, “We appreciate Scott for all of his hard work and dedication, and Jackie for
her patience in keeping our entire office running smoothly.” SERVPRO is
beginning their third year in business and the Fowlers have loved every minute of it.
They have also built some great relationships throughout the community and are
excited to soon introduce their first addition to their family, Brayden Russell Fowler,
due April 2nd.
John says, “There is just nothing quite like the look on a homeowner’s face after
we have helped make their catastrophe ’like it never happened’.” SERVPRO often
sees customers at a very stressful and worrisome time in their lives. It’s a great
feeling to help get them back in their homes and businesses and back to normal.
SERVPRO not only specializes in fire and water cleanup and restoration, but also
specializes in duct cleaning, mold remediation, and meth lab / crime scene cleanup.
SERVPRO also handles large loss damages to commercial properties, roofing jobs,
construction and remodeling.
SERVPRO looks forward to helping the community and assisting those who are
in need. They would like to thank the local insurance agents for working closely
with them in helping to assist distressed homeowners in their time of need. You
may reach SERVPRO at the phone numbers listed above or by email at
[email protected].

THE
CHAIRMAN’S CORNER with
David Rymer
As we begin to step into the season of spring, we realize that it can
be a period of great excitement. Spring can be a time for a fresh new
start and a new perspective of all that is visible all around us. This
can be a time for each of us personally, professionally and spiritually
to refocus our goals and intentions so that they lead us to a better
tomorrow.
The Athens Area Chamber of Commerce has taken steps over the
past couple of years to move in a more pro-active stance to meet the
needs of our members and to foster the progress of Athens. During
the last year, on the advisement of our members, our board and our
President/CEO, free seminars were added to the Chamber programs to
aid in the learning curve of skill sets needed to progress in this new
period. These seminars are called “Lunch and Learn” because they
are held during the lunch hour, the Chamber provides lunch to
attendees, and a lot of learning takes place in a short amount of time.
Your next opportunity will be March 23rd when Mr. Ken Rhudy,
President of Rhudy & Associates, Inc. will lead us on the topic
“Leaders Make Change Work”. All we ask is that you call the
Chamber at 745-0334 to make a reservation by March 18th.
I would also like to encourage you to be involved in our
community. Join a volunteer board in an area that is of interest to
you. Attend a Chamber Business After Hours to see how you can
serve other Chamber members and learn about their products and
services. You might be able to serve each other! Talk to your local
governments and see if you can serve on a community committee.
Local elections are just around the corner. Identify a candidate that
has a platform you agree with and support them. Support our local
arts programs by attending a play, taking an art class, attending an
exhibit at The Arts Center or joining the Community Chorus.
Get involved in a civic club. Take your family to a local sporting
event. Make 2010 a year of community participation!
The Athens Area Chamber of Commerce has ongoing programs to
support and promote shopping locally to keep our tax dollars here at
home. There have been many studies and assessments performed
which explain the benefits of spending your money locally. Not only
does your patronage help to maintain local retail merchants, but they,
in turn, pay taxes, provide jobs and give back to our community.
Make 2010 a year that you intentionally shop local. You will be
making an impact that will keep Athens and McMinn County heading
in the right direction.

The March Spotlight is shining on…
900 Appling Street Chattanooga, TN 37406
Two Chattanooga, TN distributors known for their expertise
in power transmission, electrical automation/panel building and
mechanical and engineering solutions have merged.
Creswell Industrial Supply and Richardson Electric will now
be known as Creswell Richardson.
Included in the merger are Tech
Craft Automation and Creswell
ETO Systems, which provide
customized electrical, power
transmission and mechanical
engineering solutions.
Creswell Industrial Supply was
founded in 1970 and Richardson
Electric in 1971. In April 2009,
employees moved Creswell’s
inventory from its former 6125
Left to right are owners: Rob Creswell,

Bob Creswell and Greg Creswell
the 33,000-square-foot facility
occupied by Richardson Electric on Appling Street.
The combined company will continue to supply electrical,
bearings and power transmission parts for automotive and
textile industries, construction, contractors, foundries and heavy
industrial customers just as each of the two did separately for
almost 40 years.
Creswell Richardson will keep the engineering services,
known as ETO (Engineered to Order) that Creswell provided and
the TechCraft Automation that has been a major part of
Richardson Electric’s business. It creates a one-stop-shop and
the merger reduces costs, paperwork and the number of
vendors needed to serve both businesses.
Creswell Richardson is a proud member of the Athens Area
Chamber of Commerce and invites all industry to give a look at
their customer service and capabilities. Find Creswell
Richardson on the web at www.creswellrichardson.com or call

In today’s competitive markets and unpredictable economy,
change is inevitable and necessary. Why do people resist
change? How do we reduce resistance to change and create a
positive culture to promote change and increase performance?
Come and learn five strategies of how to manage change, such
as “unleashing the power of story” and “capturing the heroic
efforts of people”.

THE
CHAIRMAN’S CORNER with
David Rymer
As spring begins to green and bloom our area, we are reminded of the
benefits of living in Southeast Tennessee. Athens and the surrounding
area provide many opportunities for each of us that larger, metropolitan
areas can only dream about. In addition to the natural beauty; lower
taxation, lower cost of living, the ease of commuting through our area,
and the great cultural experiences offered are only a few of the reasons
we should be thankful for the privilege of living in Athens / McMinn
County.
Thank you, Athens Area Council for the Arts, for hosting the
Chamber’s March “Business After Hours” at The Arts Center. A
stimulating time was had by all and culminated with a sneak-peek
performance by “Our Three Tenors”, Tim Frazier, Rusty Patterson and
Mike Simmons. Please make plans now to attend the Chamber’s next
“Business After Hours” hosted by GreenBank on Thursday, April 15th
from 5:30PM—7:00PM. These events are prime opportunities for
Chamber members to network and share with each other new products
and services available at their places of business. So, plan to come and
make some new business contacts, enjoy some refreshments and maybe
even win a door prize! I hear there is even going to be a live band at
GreenBank! You won’t want to miss it!
The season of Lent culminating with Easter Sunday has just passed,
but it continues to be a time of new beginnings. As you consider new
ways to serve your community, part of your plan should include
supporting our local retailers and merchants. In this tough economic
climate, every cent spent locally helps to ensure the on-going availability
of programs and services on which we have all come to depend.
Last year the Chamber began a campaign which encouraged folks to
“Shop Local”. We are reviving that campaign so keep your eyes out for
opportunities to support local, home-grown businesses. McMinn
County’s success depends greatly on their success. So, let’s do all we
can to keep our local businesses strong and healthy!
SHOP
LOCAL!
It helps all of us!

THE
CHAIRMAN’S CORNER with
David Rymer
I would like to take this moment to congratulate Rob, Martha and Kay, the staff
of the Athens Area Chamber of Commerce, for bringing the inspiring Phillips, Craig
& Dean concert to Athens. The Athens Junior High School auditorium was filled to
capacity with approximately 75% of the crowd being from out of town. What a great
way for them to experience “The Friendly City”! What a wonderful opportunity for
us to come together and share an uplifting event!
I would also like to commend you, my fellow McMinn County residents, for your
active participation in the recent primary elections. It is always a good indication of
a community’s life when residents care enough to take the time to vote and get
involved. Growth and quality-of-life improvements are sure to be just around the
corner. When election results were coming in after 8:00PM, the Courthouse Annex
was filled wall-to-wall with over 1,000 people. What a testament to the care and
concern for our county!
We are truly blessed to enjoy the fine quality of life we have here in McMinn
County. If you think you must go out of town to shop or enjoy a nice dinner...think
again. We have ample options right here. For example, Chamber member retail
stores and boutiques with abounding shoe buying options, such as the fashionable
Prissy Closet and the newest addition Pam’s 2 Step, Johnson’s Department Store in
Etowah and Belk, hard core biking and hiking shoes at The Outdoor Store, and for a
wide variety Wal-Mart.
In the restaurant arena you can enjoy a lovely evening at the Spice of Life Café or
the Robert E. Lee Restaurant, which has live music on Friday evenings. For a more
relaxed and casual atmosphere Java on the Square, Jenkins Grille & Market, Cracker
Barrel, Athens Diner, Maddie Mas, or Western Sizzlin’ will fit the bill. Of course, if
you enjoy international cuisine, China Wok offers a taste of the Orient, and
Gondolier offers some Greek fare. For those evenings when you need to pick up
something quick visit Bojangle’s, Buddy’s Bar-B-Q, Firehouse Subs, Hardee’s, or
Subway…or if you enjoy Karaoke, visit Talk of the Town Ice Cream & Eatery on
Thursday evenings where you can eat and sing to your heart’s content. If you would
rather just stay home and have dinner delivered to you, Domino’s Pizza is always at
the ready...and maybe afterwards you’d enjoy getting out for some dessert from The
Dairy Barn. You see, there really is something for everyone right here in McMinn
County. So, please, support our McMinn County merchants by shopping local!
If you are a business owner reading this and wondering how you, too, can become
a member of the Athens Area Chamber of Commerce, please call the Chamber at
423.745.0334 and Rob, Martha or Kay will be happy to answer your questions. The
2010 Membership Drive is currently on-going and the goal is to have 110 new
members join. The incentives for joining during the month of May are excellent, in
fact they are detailed inside this newsletter. Please give this serious consideration. It
would be our pleasure to promote your organization through the Chamber and
introduce you to other Chamber members who might be looking for the products and
services that you offer.
Remember...National MooFest is fast approaching! Over 10,000 people will
travel to Downtown Athens for this annual event and celebration of the dairy
industry. It is a great opportunity for your organization, your family, your church,
your business to get involved! The MooFest organizers are currently looking for
volunteers to help during the event, which will be held June 5-6. For more information you can visit their website at www.nationalmoofest.com. I look forward to
seeing you there!

In July 2009, the Comfort Inn
of Athens opened its doors.
Owner, Neil Mistry stated he
chose Athens to open the new
hotel because, “Athens is a good
sized town and is growing. It has
easy interstate access both in and
out, all kinds of restaurants that
our customers are looking for.
We found a good location, a
friendly city, helpful and
welcoming city officials, and we

was a need for a nice hotel at this

Comfort Inn of Athens is the first four-story hotel in McMinn County. It
is decorated in modern, contemporary colors, and finely appointed
furniture and fixtures. Comfort Inn offers 68 rooms with a mix of a king
bed, two queen beds, and a variety of suites. Each room includes a
refrigerator, microwave, iron and full-sized ironing board, coffee maker,
hair dryer, free standing vanity and a four-way massaging showerhead.
Each room also offers an individually thermostat controlled air-conditioning
and heating unit. All rooms are equipped with a desk and chair with a
desk lamp, two phones with speed dial, and radio alarm clocks. One king
suite offers a Jacuzzi tub, while another offers a fireplace, a separate work
area, a wet bar and 42” television, as well as a dining table and chairs for
two. Each suite includes a pullout sofa bed to accommodate extra guests
or children. Comfort Inn is the only hotel in this area with an indoor
heated pool with a water slide, a mushroom umbrella waterfall and a hot
tub.
Comfort Inn also offers the business community a beautifully
decorated meeting room equipped with a projector, screen and large
white board. This room is conveniently located on the ground floor with
its own access separate from the hotel lobby.
The Comfort Inn is a proud member of the Athens Area Chamber of
Commerce and owner, Neil Mistry is an active member of the Optimist
Club of Athens. When asked what his goals are for the next five to ten
years, Mr. Mistry said he hopes to stay involved and continue serving the
community, and, God willing, build one more hotel in this area and
possibly open a couple of other businesses, as well.

offered. You have taken a step to strengthen Athens and to help our area
grow and progress! A complete listing of all the new members is inside
this newsletter. Make sure you shop Chamber members first!
A special thank-you is also extended to Springbrook Golf & Country
Club, Lamar Advertising and The Daily Post-Athenian for the wonderful
incentives given to new members who joined during May. Each of these
entities recognizes the importance and value of a strong and vibrant
Chamber of Commerce to the health of our community.
This past weekend Athens came together to offer the festival known
as “National MooFest”. Reports of over 10,500 people coming to our
fair city for this event are very encouraging! A special thank-you needs
to be sent by all to Richard and Elaine Newman. The Newmans have
taken the responsibility of organizing and leading the MooFest executive
committee, which then organizes and leads the hundreds of volunteers
who help make MooFest a success. Athens is very blessed to have the
Newmans, such dedicated community-minded citizens.

4th Annual Benefit Dinner
with Guest Speaker
THE
CHAIRMAN’S CORNER with
'DYLG5\PHU
After celebrating the independence of the United States of America
on July 4th, we have been reminded of what has made our country strong
and vibrant. We are “one nation under God” with the promise of
opportunities for “life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness” for each
citizen. I hope you took a moment during your celebrations to offer a
prayer of thanks for this great nation in which we live. May we do all we
can to preserve the freedom for which many men and women have given
their very lives for us to enjoy. May we, also, take advantage of each
opportunity to be better citizens, whether it’s volunteering to be a pollworker during the upcoming elections, supporting private enterprise by
spending your dollars at locally owned retailers, or getting involved with
a civic group that supports areas of the community that are near and dear
to your heart. We are a blessed nation, a blessed state, a blessed
community. Let’s show our gratitude by doing all we can to ensure those
who come after us will enjoy these same blessings and opportunities!
On Saturday, July 31st the Athens Area Chamber of Commerce will
welcome Kirk Cameron to town. Known around the world as Mike
Seaver of the popular TV sit-com “Growing Pains”, in the past several
years Mr. Cameron has used his acting gifts in films that espouse
Christian values. His most recent leading role was in the independent
film “Fireproof”, an excellent movie that deals with the struggles and
challenges of a marriage not built on a Biblical foundation.
This annual dinner benefits our community, as well as the Chamber.
A portion of the proceeds help to fund scholarships to schools in our
area. Funds are also used to enhance the on-going programs of the
Chamber, such as Lunch & Learn Seminars, annual community concerts,
and new this year...Taste of East Tennessee. The Chamber is also hard at
work developing ways to assist small businesses and avenues to bring
more tourist dollars to our area.
In fact, the Chamber will be accepting resumes through July for folks
interested in the new part-time position of Director of Tourism. We live
in a very attractive area to tourists and feel confident that this position
will benefit our community with increased business opportunities.
Our initial Business Before Hours for the summer was a great
success! Thanks to Century 21/Robinson Realty for hosting this event on
June 17th. If you missed this Business Before Hours, do not fret. Your
next opportunity to network with fellow Chamber members will be
8:00AM-9:00AM on Thursday, July 15th when the Athens-McMinn
Family YMCA (205 Knoxville Avenue) will be hosting. Come and
enjoy a cup of coffee, meet new Chamber members, and bring a business
card to enter the door prize drawings! It will be a great way to begin
your day!

PLAN NOW TO ATTEND!
CONGRATULATIONS, to recent graduates of Leadership
McMinn! This was the largest graduating class in the history of
the program.
They kicked-off their time together by serving Women at the
Well, weeding the garden, removing fallen trees, staining a wrap
around deck, weed-eating a walking path, and installing a new
stove in the kitchen. The class then gathered on the third
Wednesday of each month to learn about different areas of
McMinn County, such as McMinn County history, education,
health services, criminal justice, government, human-service
agencies, industry and media.
The graduates had the privilege of hearing from leaders in
each of these community sectors and also enjoyed seeing behindthe-scenes of many facilities and organizations. They saw
firsthand the importance of the community sectors working handin-hand with each other for the welfare of all McMinn County
citizens.
The class chose to assist Habitat for Humanity with the setting
up of Habitat’s “Re-Store” on White Street as the “class project”.
Hours were spent moving donated goods to the new location,
building shelving and preparing the building for this new Habitat
venture.
Congratulations, again, graduates! It was a GREAT year!

THE
CHAIRMAN’S CORNER with
David Rymer
I would like to thank everyone who participated in the evening with
Kirk Cameron. Rob Preston and the Chamber staff were the main
organizers for the event, but I would like to thank all of Athens for your
participation and help in making the over 1,300 attendees feel welcome
and enjoy their time in “The Friendly City.”
Of all the events and activities the Chamber has been involved in, this
is the one of which I am personally the most proud. An 80’s “phenom”
that spread “Seaver Fever” to teen girls everywhere has grown to
develop a message that great families make great communities. He
spoke of the life-changing effect of a personal relationship with Jesus
Christ and how each of us needs to attack the sin in our lives full speed
and head on. We can all take something from Kirk’s statements to press
on to be more Christ-like and to make the world in which we live a better
place.
Events like this, in which high-caliber speakers are brought to Athens,
would be very difficult if it were not for generous community-minded
sponsors. I would like to personally thank each Gold and Silver sponsor
for seeing the value and benefit of having community-building and
enriching events such as the Annual Benefit Dinner each year, and for
giving their support to make them happen.
This past weekend McMinn County came together for “Stuff the Bus,”
a project which provides school supplies for area students whose parents
cannot afford to purchase the necessary supplies for them. The event
was sponsored by United Way of McMinn & Meigs Counties, Athens Area
Chamber of Commerce and McMinn County Education Foundation.
There were many volunteers from civic groups, as well, such as, The Optimist Club of Athens and The Kiwanis Club of Athens. Thanks to each
person who volunteered their time and the many people who donated
items!
I would like to offer a word of congratulations to all who participated
in the recent elections. All the candidates and their supporters put forth
enthusiastic and respectable campaigns and each should be proud of
participating in the process that makes America great!
Many of you might not be aware that the Chamber has a very
informative website which contains a “Calendar of Events.” If you are
planning an event or program, I would encourage you to check the
Chamber’s calendar to assist you in choosing a date, and once you have
determined a date and time, go to the Chamber’s website
(www.athenschamber.org) and click on the “Calendar of Events” link on
the homepage. This will take you to a page that has a link which will
give you access to a form to complete in order to add your event to the
calendar. If you have difficulty with the website or the form, just email
[email protected] for assistance. We look forward to helping you
promote your events!

4th Annual Benefit Dinner, Saturday, July 31st
with Guest Speaker
KIRK CAMERON
Over 1,300 people gathered in the McMinn County High School gymnasium
on Saturday, July 31st for the 4th Annual Benefit Dinner with guest speaker,
Kirk Cameron. A special thanks to Spice of Life Café for the delicious meal
they served to 600 people. Special thanks, also, to the administration of
McMinn County High School for their generous hospitality and help in making
this event a wonderful success. Of course, this evening would not have been
possible without the support of our sponsors. We thank each of them for
their commitment to helping the Chamber promote “The Friendly City”
through great events like this annual dinner!
There were over 1,300 in
attendance, many of whom
were from outside of McMinn
County...even outside of TN.
Kirk signed autographs for everyone after
the program.
Kirk had a hope-filled
message for everyone.

HAVE YOU USED YOUR CHAMBER PERK CARD LATELY?
The Chamber Perk Program is a benefit for Chamber members which offers discounts in
a variety of Chamber member businesses. Participating members decide the “perk” they
would like to offer, and are free to change that “perk” as often as they would like. Chamber
members and employees of Chamber members are eligible to have “perk cards” to present
to participating members in order to receive discounts. Perk cards are available to be
picked up at the Chamber office located at 13 North Jackson Street in Athens. Below is a
current list of participating members and the “perks” they are currently offering. If there is
no perk listed next to a business, when you visit present your perk card prior to ordering or
making your purchase and ask the clerk what their “perk” is at that time. Perks can change as frequently as the business
owner would like. So, visit these businesses often to take advantage of each and every “perk”!

THE
CHAIRMAN’S CORNER with
David Rymer
It is the Fall season in Tennessee. Football excitement and cool nights
and mornings are in the air and soon the leaves will begin transforming into
beautiful vibrant colors. Change is in the air and can be a positive force in
every area of life. Make this time of change a chance to be a better
husband, wife, parent, neighbor, employer or employee; because when you
are your best you make your world and all those in it better.
This is the season for the beginning of a new Arts Council Performance
Series. Athens is indeed blessed to have such an organization! They work
extremely hard to bring in culturally rich and diverse artistic entertainment
for this community’s enjoyment. I understand that season passes are on
sale now. I cannot recommend strongly enough that you hurry and
purchase one for your family!
The United Way of McMinn & Meigs Counties kicked-off the 2011
Campaign last week. The kick-off was presided over by President Cindy
Runyan and included some thoughts from UT Men’s Basketball Head Coach
Bruce Pearl. Coach Pearl was, as always, inspirational reminding all
attendees of all the opportunities to serve in our community, so that those
who need aid will be able to find it. The United Way is an important
component to making McMinn County a better place to live. Please consider
how you can help them meet their 2011 Campaign goal.
I would also like to commend Clearwater Baptist Church for sponsoring
neighborhood block parties. These parties gave people living in the same
neighborhood the opportunity to come together, meet each other and open
the possibility of friendships with those who live closest to them...in other
words the possibility to become true neighbors.
The Downtown Business Association is in the throws of making plans for
the 7th Annual Pumpkintown: A Fall Festival Celebrating History, Heritage
and Harvest. Plan to be in Historic Downtown Athens on Saturday, October
9th from 10AM until 5:30PM for this highly anticipated festival and you will
see Revolutionary War re-enactments, Historical Walking Tours, harvest
produce vendors, fine arts and crafts, heritage craft demonstrations, antique
cars and tractors on display, antique stagecoach rides, food possibilities for
every taste bud and activities especially planned for the young ones. The
Downtown Business Association is always looking for volunteers for this
event. So, if you’re looking for a positive way to get involved in the
community, consider volunteering for Pumpkintown!
The City of Athens will be hosting the Chamber’s September Business
After Hours on Thursday, September 16th from 5:30-7:00PM. Typically
offered to Chamber members only, the City is inviting each Athens citizen to
attend. City Department Heads and City Council members will be on hand
and available to answer questions that anyone might have. Plan now to
attend and learn about all the positive things going on in Athens!
Remember...if your organization, sports team, or school has an upcoming
event that will be open to the public, contact the Chamber (745.0334) to get
the date and time listed on the Chamber’s website calendar. Or go directly
to the Chamber’s website www.athenschamber.org and make the request!

For Pam Wilson, owner of 2 Step, the decision to go into the shoe business
came after pondering whether to retire after 15 years in interior design, drapes/
upholstery, being a Hunter Douglas dealer, or to transition into something else.
After doing a lot of research about a women’s shoe store, which she felt
Athens greatly needed (and she already owned the building), she thought,
“Why not?” And on March 15, 2010 she opened the doors of 2 Step. “Comfort,
comfort shoes is what you will find here,” Pam says.
Pam has been very pleased with
the results so far. She loves
working with people and making
them and their feet happy. “Many of
my customers have been with me
during my 15 years in downtown
Athens,” she said. “In fact, we have
already expanded the shoe store to
bring not only comfortable shoes but
also a line of fashion items for
ladies, such as silk scarves,
handmade jewelry, and other
items.”
Pam moved to Athens in 1968
Pam Wilson, Owner of 2 Step
from Chattanooga, TN and was in the
furniture manufacturing industry for many years, which is where she gained her
upholstery experience. She opened Pam’s Pizazz Interior Decorating &
Design 15 years ago. She added the Hunter Douglas dealership five years
ago, which is a shutter, shade and blinds service. “I still do all the drapes.
Residential, commercial, industrial and government jobs are all treated as high
priorities.” Pam’s work is on display at The German-American Chamber of
Commerce in Atlanta, GA, as well as Atlanta Federal courtrooms, Holiday Inn,
and Partridge & Pear Tree Restaurant in Pigeon Forge, TN.
Pam is married to C.H. Wilson and has three sons and a “precious
grand-daughter”. She and C.H. live on a farm with horses, a llama, and dogs
and cats, which she says, “are the rest of our children.”
Pam is very involved in the Athens community. She is a board member of
the Downtown Business Association, a member of the Athens Area Chamber
of Commerce, and is an active member of Keith Memorial United Methodist
Church, as well as helping with rescued animals. She was formerly involved
with Woods Memorial Hospital’s Hospice program and was a supporter of the
HIV/AIDS Support Group.
Pam and her staff look forward to welcoming everyone to 2 Step. She said,
“Each customer I have, I value my friendship with them very much.”
Step on over to Pam’s 2 Step!

THE
CHAIRMAN’S CORNER with
David Rymer
I would like to congratulate the Downtown Business Association for
spearheading “Pumpkintown” last weekend. Once again, they oversaw
many citizens who pulled together, volunteered their time and energy
and hosted a fun, educational and all-around wonderful celebration! This
event is dubbed “Pumpkintown” because that is one of the earlier names
of our fair city...before it became known as Athens. During my time
enjoying the festivities I met families from Chattanooga, Knoxville and
North Georgia. Each group voiced their pleasure and appreciation for
Athens offering an event such as this. I hope you got to enjoy it, too!
One of the many benefits to being a Chamber member is gaining
access to the “Lunch and Learn” series of seminars. These seminars are
typically held during the lunch hour with lunch provided free of charge
for attendees. The only requirement is a phone call to the Chamber to
make a reservation. “Lunch and Learn” seminars are brief and effective
learning opportunities dealing with various topics, selected for their
usefulness to Chamber members. Past topics include improving customer
service; how to increase your business by 10% in a tough economy;
retail loss prevention; energy conservation; how leaders implement
change effectively; social security updates and advocacy. The next
“Lunch and Learn” opportunity will be Thursday, January 13, 2011,
11:45AM to 1:00PM. The topic will center around financial planning and
preparing to file income taxes with new tax laws in effect. This seminar
will be led by Pascarella & Miller, CPAs, PLLC. Stay on the lookout for
more information in upcoming newsletters and on the Chamber website
(www.athenschamber.org).
Another effort the Chamber continues to promote is “SHOP LOCAL!”.
We must remember that when we shop locally the benefits are many.
First, the time required and cost of gas incurred traveling to and from a
distant retailer are eliminated. Also, when you shop locally you receive
better service from your neighbors and friends who have a share in this
community, too. Shopping locally helps businesses to thrive
here...businesses that pay taxes to support our local schools and
maintain our quality of life. Local businesses employ local people who
own homes, which helps to keep up property values. When we support
home retailers and shop locally we help to ensure a healthy, growing
community. So, remember… “SHOP LOCAL!” and keep Athens strong!
Chamber members can also benefit by shopping locally by using their
“Chamber Perks” cards at participating Chamber member retailers and
restaurants. A list of participating members and their “perks” are listed
on page 2 of this newsletter. If you are a Chamber member and you
don’t have a perks card, stop by the Chamber office and get one. If you
are a Chamber member and you would like to offer a perk, call the
Chamber and the staff will be happy to add your business and your perk
to the list. It’s a benefit all Chamber members should be using!

When Arun Deean and his wife, Donna Cubberly, began looking for
a place to build a hotel, Athens certainly presented a viable and
friendly location. With support from the local community, they
completed construction of the Hampton Inn in 1999. Since then, they
have had the pleasure of hosting celebrities visiting the community, or
simply passing through, as well as hosting guests of local businesses.
The Holiday Inn Express opened its doors to guests in 2003, and
has also been the host for guests of several businesses in the region.
Additionally, Arun and Donna are very proud to serve as hosts for our
area National Guard units each month as they serve our country.
“The Athens community is well balanced with industries and
businesses that provide products and services around the globe. Our
hotels have had the pleasure of hosting guests from Japan, Germany,
France and the UK, to name a few. Because this is a rural location,
we find it really amazing how many corporate travelers pass through
or visit this region,” shared the owners.
Each hotel employs around 25 staff members, who all work very
hard to maintain each facility for guests. The Hampton Inn houses 70
rooms and two meeting rooms. The Holiday Inn has 64 rooms, a
meeting room and a board room.
Arun and Donna were quick to say, “If you did not realize our
hotels were in the community, we invite you to come by and visit.”

THE
CHAIRMAN’S CORNER with
David Rymer
The autumn season has arrived with its change in temperature, in the length
of the illuminated day, and most importantly, the change in emotional tension
and expectations. This is the time to slow down and enjoy your family, visit with
friends and shop with your neighbors at your local hometown merchants.
During my time volunteering with the Athens Area Chamber of Commerce I
have had the opportunity to get better acquainted with many of the people who
are actively working for the betterment of Athens. I have found the vast
majority are hard working Americans trying to make a better place to live, work
and grow a family. We all desire our community to continue to grow in vibrancy
and overall financial strength. Thankfully, we have community-minded leaders
whom we can trust to have the citizens’ best interests foremost on their minds.
But, we must each do our part, as well.
Please remember to always try to shop locally first. With a little
investigation you can find most everything you might need, and when
you shop locally first you enjoy instant impact. You positively impact
your local schools and roads and tax revenue, which will allow McMinn
County to be attractive to prospective industries as they consider expanding. You impact local businesses to keep stores open and people
working in them, people, like us, who will reinvest money right back into
our community.
A great opportunity to begin Christmas shopping locally will be
Saturday, November 20th when the Downtown Business Association
hosts “Old Fashioned Christmas” from 4:00PM—9:00PM. The town
square around the courthouse will become strictly pedestrian, Christmas
music will be playing, choirs will be singing, festive dancers will be
dancing and each downtown merchant will have their shops open and
ready to serve you. Please join in the fun of this kick-off to the
Christmas season and get a jump-start on your Christmas shopping. It’s
one of the most anticipated events in the Friendly City!
Congratulations to all the participants in the recent election. I would
like to thank each of you for your willingness to step forward and seek to
become actively involved in our local government. Thank you for being
willing to give of your time and energy to campaign, and to those who
won, to give of your time and energy to serve in that elected office.
A special thanks goes out to each council member, school board
member, commissioner, etc...for their years of service and dedication to
the betterment of our region. To those of you who chose to not seek
re-election, enjoy your days of fewer meetings and less travel, but please
do not become silent. You have served us well, and your ability to be
forward thinking, yet stable in values, has enabled Athens to become a
great place to live! Thank you for serving!
On behalf of the Athens Area Chamber of Commerce staff, board of
directors and members please accept my wishes for everyone to have a
HAPPY THANKSGIVING!

THE
CHAIRMAN’S CORNER with
David Rymer
This a wonderful time of year to celebrate life and community. With
all the events of Christmas it is a great time to look at our lives and
community with excitement.
As we just experienced last Friday and Saturday with “Jazzy Little
Christmas” at The Arts Center, and Monday night with the 2010 Jimmy
Liner Memorial Christmas Parade, as well as the Optimist Club of Athens
soup supper, we are primed and ready to celebrate this Christmas
season. I hope you will take advantage of every opportunity to hear the
sounds of Christmas and see the sights and lights of Christmas in the
next few weeks. Visit a school presentation, a church service, take the
family for a drive to see Christmas lights, maybe even gather with some
friends to go Christmas caroling.
A special thank you is extended to all the volunteers and sponsors of
this year’s Christmas parade. This year’s sponsors were Citizens National
Bank, SouthEast Bank & Trust, Madison Avenue Pharmacy, Life Care
Center of Athens, First Baptist Church of Athens, Comfort Inn, Matlock
Tire Service, Air-Evac Lifeteam, Selective Structures, LLC, AUB, Thomas
& Betts, BB&T, Carter Insurance Agency, Inc, and Smith Funeral &
Cremation Service. The Jimmy Liner Memorial Christmas Parade is one
of the oldest annual parades in the State of TN and one of the best as
over 10,000 spectators gather to watch it pass by. The parade would
not be possible without the generosity of sponsors and the time and
energy of many volunteers from the City and County, as well as the
Chamber. The spirit of giving to others is one of the many benefits in
our area, and is celebrated liberally during the Christmas season.
Speaking of the spirit of giving, please consider sending a gift in
honor or in memory of a friend or loved one to the Friendly Fellows this
year. Many volunteers will gather at the National Guard Armory in the
next couple of weeks to prepare food boxes for the needy. This is a
wonderful way to share Christmas with those less fortunate and a special
way to honor or remember a special person who has touched your life.
I would like to congratulate The Daily Post-Athenian for providing a
most necessary component to our democracy...educating the electorate.
The DPA recently published a series of articles on the steps McMinn
County Mayor John Gentry and Economic Development Authority Director
Jack Hammontree have taken on behalf of McMinn County to secure and
encourage job growth and development. Both of these men are open to
suggestions from McMinn County citizens as to how to keep McMinn
County growing. Thank you Mayor Gentry and Mr. Hammontree for all
you do for McMinn County!
On behalf of the Chamber’s board of directors, diplomats and staff…
MERRY CHRISTMAS & HAPPY NEW YEAR!
