Exterior Surface Preparation: Higher profits and happier customers There are two constants for paint professionals – a substrate is solid (no rot or material defects). Even if quality finish is the result of proper preparation, and you’re working with a newer surface, it’s good to rough 75% of the work required to achieve a quality finish is it up (go over with a sander) to make sure the paint the time it takes to prepare the surface. That’s the way adheres to the material.” Dan Frost explains it based on his 30 years of experience as a professional painter. Frost always used power tools to prep surfaces for finishing during his years of maintaining many of Boston’s historic homes; he’s helped paint dealers and contractors in the New England area understand and appreciate the quality and productivity benefits associated with using the right tools to prep a surface before painting. “Using a Festool sander and dust extractor is the best way to prepare a surface without adding chemicals and moisture,” Frost says. “The key to proper surface preparation is to clean away all loose material (paint and dirt), remove any sheen, and make sure the Frost recommends a thorough investigation of the surface to be painted or sealed to determine the preparation required. “You not only want to determine the condition of the material substrate, but also what type of coating has been used on it in previous surface applications,” he notes. “Careful evaluation of the surface and substrate condition will help determine what abrasive grit will be needed to efficiently achieve the best results.” For exterior surface preparation, Frost recommends the Festool ROTEX RO 90 and ROTEX RO 125 sanders with the CT 26 mobile dust extractor system. As Frost noted earlier, a quick once-over with one of Festool’s detail sanders on many of the composite exterior trim pieces is all that’s needed to remove any sheen to ensure a good bond of the new paint. On average, twelve doors are usually completed with a total cost of $612.00 Dust control makes for happier clients The benefits of Festool’s sanding and dust extraction system are twofold – productivity and a clean environment, both of which make customers very happy. As Frost points out, whenever you can get in and get out as quickly as possible, without making a mess, homeowners appreciate that type of professionalism. On exterior painting projects, the dust control feature of the Festool system is significant for clients, because it minimizes damage to their landscape and outdoor living areas. It also saves painting contractors time cleaning up at the end of the day. “When you’re dealing with lead paint removal in particular, the dust extraction system is the only regulations require you to put down plastic as far out as 20 feet from the structure and then tarp on top of that. The Festool dust extraction system removes 98% of the particulate material, so there’s basically nothing that ends up on your tarps or the ground.” This is the message Frost communicated to paint dealers and their professional painting contractor customers. Educating the professional painting industry on how the Festool system can significantly increase productivity rates, eliminate environmental concerns, deliver a higher quality end result and higher profitability is the mission Frost advocated. His 30 years as a professional painting contractor provides a wealth of valuable experience that he has always been eager to share with paint dealers and contractors alike. way to go,” Frost says. “Exterior lead paint removal FINISH LINE | Fall 2013 | www.festoolpaint.com 7 Feature Story In a recent test to compare hand scraping exterior wood shingles versus using the powered sander/dust extraction method, the productivity benefits were significant. Frost says it took two workers two days to tarp and hand strip wood shingles located on the gable peaks of a house. With paint chips flying everywhere and the time-consuming cleanup required at the end of the day, it wasn’t pretty. With the powered sander/dust extraction method, the time required was less than a third of the hand-scraped approach, without having to place tarps around the project. “Whatever you can do to keep the worker on task in a safe environment is only going to improve that worker’s productivity and reduce wasted time required to clean up around the project,” Frost says. “That’s the message Festool is communicating to painting contractors when demonstrating the value proposition of its complete line of sanders and dust extractors. Festool demonstrates real-life applications on a smaller scale to show contractors the advantages it can deliver. “Whether it is a single painting contractor using a Festool System, or the larger painting contractor (with several crews out in the field) using several systems, the payoff will immediately be realized,” Frost says. “You’ll be a more productive contractor delivering better quality, and working on high-end projects for customers who appreciate an organized and professionallooking crew.” And happy customers are profitable customers. Improving productivity and profits can be achieved by using the Rotex RO 90 sander (at right) along with a Festool HEPA dust extractor (upper right) to deliver a clean, quality surface ready for a new finish. 8 FINISH LINE | Fall 2013 | www.festoolpaint.com Feature Story Using a high-quality sander with dust extraction saves time and improves the overall profitability of the project. On many of the decks For most decks, we use the RO 125 or 150 with 60 or 80 grit abrasive in Rotex mode connected to a dust extractor to initially sand and prep the surface by removing the top layer of any remaining finish, dirt and grime. Generally, the choice between the RO 125 and the 150 is based on the width of the deck boards. For example, if the boards are less than 5 inches and cupped at all, and railing systems that we maintain, the use of the RO 90 to get around spindles, handrails and stairs is the game changer in the same way the 150 is for flat surfaces. Originally designed for solvent-based high-VOC surfaces and paints, its anti-clogging properties are well suited for a broad range of applications: including clear coats, composites, mineral and solid surfaces, in addition to wood and wood-based materials. Developed specifically for the painting industry. Granat was specifically developed for prep work and removal of paint so that it retains its tooth longer than other abrasives. This prevents buildup or clogging, leading to reduced waste and greater profits. There’s no wax coating to harm your finish. Granat contains absolutely no wax, so you won’t see any harmful impact on your water-based finishes as you would with other Zinc stearate abrasives. Paint contractors love Granat because it’s perfectly suited for all types of coatings, including low VOC’s and latex paints. Granat cuts 30% faster. Our tests have proven Granat to cut up to 30% faster than other leading abrasives. This translates to as much as two or more hours of sanding time per day. Assuming an hourly rate of $45, that means you could save over $400 a week. That’s $1600 per month, and nearly $15,000 per year, just in labor. *Based on Festool internal testing. When it comes to removing stubborn old paint, you have to use chemicals (what does your customer say about that?), a grinder (blowing a mind-boggling amount of dust all over the place), or a scraper (and a ton of elbow grease). There is a better way! A sander for every sanding application Do you need all these sanders? Maybe not. But you know that Festool has a sander to increase your productivity in any sanding situation. of paint. No matter if you are working with Latex paint, VOC paints, multiple layers of paint or delicate surfaces, Granat is the go-to abrasive for painting contractors. It lasts significantly longer than the abrasives you are used to, because it clogs less, even with problematic paints and lacquers; and in combination with the appropriate Festool sander, it cuts faster than other abrasives. All this means you can save a significant amount of time during the preparing stage. With the use of the Festool Rotex sander, Festool CT vacuum, and Festool Granat abrasives he will finish the job in less than half the time. The Festool Solution: The Systainers don’t just shine when setting-up in the morning, but also when Step 4: Clean up At the end of the day, you want to leave your customer’s home as clean as possible. Customers judge your work not just by how the paint job looks, but also how much mess you left and how much you inconvenienced them. After you have sanded by hand or with a sander without dust extraction, you have a big mess to clean up. This can take up to 1 hour at the end of the day. The Festool Solution: Since all Festool sanders hook up to a highly efficient HEPA vacuum, the dust is contained in the vacuum and not spread on the floor and the furniture. At the end of the day, clean-up is a breeze and you are out the door faster. Painting contractors report that they save 30 to 45 minutes in clean-up every day. That is 2 hours 30 minutes to 3 hours 45 minutes a week, or 130 to 195 hours a year you are saving in clean-up time. At an hourly rate of $40, this is up to $7,800 in savings every year! And, probably even more important: Your customer will be happier and will more likely give you referrals and repeat business. Festool breaking-down in the evening. Cut down on the number of trips to your truck and on the time needed to pack everything up. Stack your Festool Systainers on top of your Festool vacuum, wheel everything to your truck, load it up, and go home. Time savings? We believe 15 to 30 minutes every workday. That is 1 hour 15 minutes to 2 hours 30 minutes a week, 65 to 130 hours a year just in set-up time. At an hourly rate of $40, this is up to $5,200 in savings every year. The Bottom Line? Saving time means saving money, resulting in completing more jobs in less time. You will be able to get more business, because your bids are going to be more competitive when you are able to do your work in less time. Simply put, your business will be more profitable and you will have more money in your pocket. But that is not all. Working with Festool sanders and vacuums will make your work not just faster, but also easier (who likes tedious hand sanding?) and smarter will give you the ability to stand alone when it comes to (who likes to inhale dust and clean-up?). the bidding process. Something else? Yes, your customers will be happier if they see you taking care of the dust with a HEPA Step 5: Break-down certified vacuum, and don’t leave a mess. All done with your work? Ready to go home to the family and some well-deserved leisure time? How long does it take to pack everything up? How many trips do you have to do to the truck and back? As with setting-up in the morning, we think it takes longer than it should. Who is paying you for carrying single boxes to your truck? Nobody! Not convinced yet? Try for yourself. Festool offers their Time Savings Guarantee. Pick up a Festool sander/vac combo, use it for 30 days in a real work environment. If you don’t see the savings, we’ll take the sander and vacuum back for a full refund.
