YEAR 12 HARVEST FESTIVAL ASSEMBLY Mrs Newsam Achievement Team Leader Celebrating British Values Tuesday 29th September 2015 HARVEST FESTIVAL POEM • • We bring the spare we do not really need (for surely God will honor all we bring although it cannot make up for our greed). And place into Christ’s hands our offering: “Turn water into wine again,” we say, “and multiply my token loaves and fish to feed another hungry crowd today.” Our gifts, we know, will put some flesh on words of charity. Then into those twelve empty baskets, let us place the gifts in us that need to be increased and shared with greater generosity than we may be prepared to offer on our own account. For we are God’s most rich and splendid bounty, sown as seeds and scattered by the Lord in every place the human race: the crowning glory of the ever-evolving creation story. We thank God that he does not only separate the wheat from tare, but takes our very best then turns us into far more than we are. Reverend Ally WHAT IS HARVEST FESTIVAL? • Harvest Festival is an annual celebration that occurs around the time of the main harvest of a given region. • Harvest Festival is a Christian celebration to give thanks for the crops which have been safely gathered in by the farmers. • This harvested food ensures that everyone will be able to eat well. SUCCESSFUL HARVEST • In Britain thanks have been given for successful harvests since Pagan times. • Harvest Festival is traditionally held on the Sunday nearest the full Moon that occurs closest to the autumn equinox (22 or 23 September). • The celebrations on this day usually include singing hymns, praying and decorating churches with baskets of fruit and food. ACTIVE CITIZENSHIP • Traditional in many schools during Harvest Festival, students bring in tinned or packaged food which is collected and shared within the local community. “A form of Active Citizenship” • This then represents a modern day Harvest Festival. • Our food today will be given to the Local Food banks in Ilford. HARVEST FESTIVAL CELEBRATED ALL OVER THE WORLD Given the differences in climate and crops around the world, harvest festivals can be found at various times throughout the world. • • A traditional Indian setting, for the Vishu agricultural festival. • National Harvest Thanksgiving ceremony in Poland. In Barbados Harvest Festival is called CROP OVER HARVEST FESTIVAL Our food today will be given to the Local Food Banks in Ilford. Thank You Year 12 for being “Active Citizens” Celebrating British Values YEAR 12 STUDENT VOICE ON HARVEST FESTIVAL Name – Shorif I have made this logo to represent Loxford School and the food bank program so I can do more for my school and my local community. I wanted to do more for the area and school that helped me grow as a person through these crucial years. This is my way of giving back and helping in a way I know how to, it's my way of being an active citizen. I used Photoshop to make the logo from scratch using similar colors from the Loxford logo. Thank you for giving me the opportunity to contribute to this work that will not only benefit the school but the local area as a whole. Taking part in Harvest Festival has taught me a lot about “British Values”. HARVEST FESTIVAL Name – Zahra Nisar Participating in the Harvest Festival gave me an opportunity to thank God for all his blessings. I was granted the privilege of decorating the stage and putting the food in place. I decorated the stage with different pieces of fabrics, dray leaves collected from the school field and shoe boxes to give it a look of a proper Harvest. Students brought food and gifts for the poor people which were placed by me around the decoration on the stage. All of my year group participated by bringing in canned or packaged food. The contribution of all students was admirable. I am confident that if we all keep working together and keep contributing in such events we will help the less fortunate people in our community. Nobody will die with hunger because even a small group of peop0le working for a cause can make a big difference. “If you can’t feed a hundred people, then feed just one”.
