Kita-Shiga Kogen, endowed with nature, is famous as a production area of Soba (buckwheat). The intangible folk cultural
asset of Nagano Prefecture ‘Sugakawa-soba’, which has been
passed down for generations in this area, uses fiber of Oyamabokuchi (pokeweed) leaves as the binding agent. Very aromatic, chewy, nice and smooth.
You can also try bamboo craft using Nemagaridake which has
descended from the Edo period.
Kita-Shiga Kogen is known as a winter sports resort. Four distinct areas await you to enjoy all kinds of winter sports including skiing and snowboarding.

Shiga Highland Biosphere Reserve was one of the first to be
assigned as a Biosphere Reserve in 1980.
Biosphere Reserves is part of the MAB (UNESCO’s Man and
the Biosphere) programme in Natural Sciences sector to integrate conservation and sustainable use of the ecosystem
(coexistence of nature and people).
In Shiga Kogen, Yamanouchi Town, Mt.Shigayama, Shijuhachiike and Onumaike are assigned as “Core Areas” for its
long-term conservation, and the surrounding areas are
assigned as a “Buffer zone” where conservation of nature
including environmental education and learning, and ecotourism are prioritized for its use. Furthermore, a “Transition
Area” surrounds the “Buffer zone”, where sustainable agriculture and living is carried out, and effort is made to raise the
value of local produce and region.
Shiga Highland Biosphere Reserve and its surrounding areas
are Japan’ s top rated recreation areas attracting over 2 million
visitors a year.
The area was rapidly developed mainly to establish a ski resort
from the 1960s, but the “Core Areas” have not been artificially
affected and its primary forest has been preserved in a vast
area. Its surrounding area also houses beautiful lakes and high
moors in subtle and profound alpestrine coniferous forest.
Nozawa Onsen Snow Resort
Modern resort in a perfect hot spring village setting
Since 1930, Nozawa Onsen has always been at the
top of the Japanese skiing scene, and more recently
snowboarding has become popular in the area. It
was the first place in Japan to install ski lifts and
also holds numerous major skiing and snowboarding
tournaments each year. Although, the snow resort of
Nozawa Onsen offers modern facilities for both skiers
and snowboarders, the village of Nozawa Onsen strives
to maintain a traditional atmosphere. During the 1998
Nagano Olympics, Nozawa Onsen hosted the Biathlon
competitions.

Myoko Ski Area
Enjoy the great powder snow
Four major ski areas stretch across the eastern face
of majestic Mt. Myoko—the interconnected Akakura
Onsen and Akakura Kanko resorts, Ikenotaira Onsen
and Myoko Suginohara. To the north is the smaller (but
popular for its deep snows) Seki Onsen. Add to that
more than 17 meters of snow annually, and the diversity
of these areas means something for every skier, from
beginners to steep-and-deep powder hounds.
Accommodation
Myoko has a wide range of
accommodations for every traveler,
from intimate family-run pensions to
luxurious resort hotels. The area was
originally established more than 200
years ago because of the excellent
onsen (hot springs) here—still a great
attraction for wintertime guests.
Access from Narita Airport
Take the Narita Express to Tokyo (60
minutes); transfer to the JR Nagano
Shinkansen to Nagano (95 to 110
minutes). At Nagano Station, transfer
to the Shinetsu Line to Myokokogen
Station (approx. 40 minutes);
many hotels will pick up guests at
Myokokogen, some at Nagano.
Dining and Drinking
A wide range of restaurants in the
Myoko se r ve a r a n g e of cui s ine,
largely Japanese but also Western and
Chinese. For local specialties, try the
soba (buckwheat noodles), mountain
vegetables or fish dishes from the
nearby Sea of Japan. Nightlife tends
to be a bit quieter than some resorts,
but there are bars and karaoke spots
that stay open a bit later (heavy snows
often close things down!).
After Ski/Nightlife
There are many hot springs, and a
range of good local restaurants and
bars.
Regional Specialities
Originally founded in the 1800s as
an onsen destination, the Myoko
area became one of the world’s first
modern ski resorts with the building
of the Akakura Kanko Hotel in 1937.
It retains a unique, small-Japaneseski-town feeling unlike other more
modern resorts. It’s
a beautiful, natural
world as well,
with ski runs that
wind through
beech forests.
Lift Pass
There are many areas, and many
packages available. The Myoko Big-4
Lift Pass, especially for international
travelers, allows access at any
of the four main resorts: Akakura
Onsen, Akakura Kanko, Ikenotaira
and Suginohara. Price is ¥4,600/
day; ¥4,100 for seniors and children.

Zao Onsen Ski Resort
Riding through the “Ice Monsters”
Zao Onsen Ski Resort offers a variety courses for
beginners, advanced level skiers and families. The
excellent snow quality also attracts skiers from all over
the country every year. Zao is also well known for its
"ice monsters." Due to the particular climate of the area,
fine snow and small pieces of ice cling to the fir trees on
the mountains producing a spectacular natural work of
art. Skiing through the ice monsters during the day and
then viewing them illuminated at night is an experience
that can only be found here!
Accommodation
Downhill from the ski resor t lays
the hot spring town of Zao Onsen.
Visiting a hot spring during a stay in
Zao is very easy and relaxing too. The
100 hotels, ryokans (Japanese inns)
and guesthouses in Zao Onsen can
accommodate about 9,000 people.
There are many gift shops and small
bath houses in Zao Onsen, which will
make your stay today, feel very much
like one from the days of the old time
Japanese health resorts.
Access from Narita Airport
JR Narita Express from Narita Airport
to Tok yo: approx. 60 minutes. JR
Yamagata Shinkansen from Tokyo
to Yamagata: 2.5 hours. Shuttle bus
bound for Zao Onsen from Yamagata

the traffic.
Dining and Drinking
Because of the many restaurants
on the ski slopes (there about 40
restaurants), one can take time out
from skiing or snowboarding to enjoy
a nice lunch without leaving the resort!
A famous dish in Zao is the Genghis
Khan (lamb barbecue). Fresh unfrozen
lamb in sauce provides a variety of
tastes in the different restaurants.
There are a range of flavours to suit all
tastes.
After Ski/Nightlife
Viewing the illuminated ice monsters
is one of the special treats of Zao.
They are truly fantastic and look very
different than they do in the sunlight.
As well as being able to see the ice
monsters close up, you can also see
them from the ropeway car s, the
viewing platform and restaurants
Regional Specialities
Born from the distinctive climate, the
sheer number of ice monsters in Zao
presents one of the best sights in the
world. As a sculpture of snow and
ice, the ice monsters truly are one of
nature’s amazing artworks. Also, since
the ski fields are connected to the hot
spring town of Zao Onsen, it is possible
to ski down in front of the ryokans and

Hakkoda is a backcountry powder ski mecca – a holy

your adventure, and with an average snow base of 4+
metres, there will always be fresh snow for you to enjoy.
So come experience the deep powder that graces the
mountains of Hakkoda – Japan’s truly unique ski resort.

luxury resorts that are popular for their

or train station you can catch a taxi to
Hakkoda, which will take you about
30 minutes. From the station you can

economical if traveling solo but takes
twice as long.
