C OUNTY, WITH 992 square miles
and a population of 44,400, extends from
near the Hwy 18 junction to Cape Perpetua
south of Yachats. Most of the population is concentrated in coastal towns located 10 to 20
miles apart. These towns are ready for visitors,
having more lodging facilities than any other
county on the coast. Many resorts are adjacent
to long, sandy beaches. Massive headlands edge
this stretch of coast: Cascade Head, Cape
Foulweather, and Cape Perpetua. Three highways cross the Coast Range to connect with
inland towns: Hwy 18 near Lincoln City, Hwy
20 in Newport, and Hwy 34 in Waldport.
Lincoln City, on the northern end of the
county, began as five smaller towns.Visitors
flock to the beaches and resorts, the stores of
Tanger Outlets, Chinook Winds Casino Resort,
Devils Lake, and the new glass foundry. This
town is a great place to shop for antiques or fly
kites year-round.
Between Lincoln City and Newport are the
towns of Gleneden Beach, home to renowned
Salishan Spa & Golf Resort, and Depoe Bay, noted
for its whale-watching and fishing charters.
Newport is the county seat and a popular
travel destination drawing visitors with its
oceanfront resorts, historic Nye Beach, and
Bayfront’s fishing fleet, fishing and whalewatching charters. Toledo, a former mill town,
is inland a few miles and is now known for its

PACIFIC OCEAN
THE LAND THAT now is Depoe Bay was allotted by
the U.S. government in 1894 to a Siletz Indian
named Charlie Depot. His last name was
derived from his employment at a U.S. army
depot. The family later changed the spelling to
Depoe, which was the spelling used when a post
office was established in 1928.
Depoe Bay may have only 1100 full-time
residents, but it still knows how to put on a
party.April brings the Classic Wooden Boat
Show, Crab Feed, and Ducky Derby. The Fleet of
Flowers is on Memorial Day, and the annual
salmon bake is in September.
Depoe Bay claims to have the world’s smallest navigable harbor. Charter fishing and whalewatching boats can be on the open sea in just
minutes.A sea wall runs almost the full length
of town and is known for the spouting horns,
rock formations that turn crashing waves into
plumes of water on stormy days.Winter storm
watching from various restaurants and lodging
facilities in town is becoming increasingly popular. At the south end of the seawall is the Whale
Watching Spoken Here Interpretive Center.

place for sunbathing. Take the road on the

near the parking lot.A trail leads under the
highway to a beach and dramatic rock formations. Fee area. 126.4 Boiler Bay State Scenic Viewpoint
The J. Marhoffer, a small freighter, sank
here in 1910. Its boiler, still mired in a sandbar,
is visible at low tide. Picnic facilities and yearround opportunities for whale watching. It is
one of best locations on the coast to spot gray
whales. 128.0 Depoe Bay (ZIP 97341) See city
page.
128.0 Depoe Bay Bridge
This single span reinforced concrete deck
arch bridge is a good example of McCullough’s
engineering and artistic design.When this
bridge was built in 1927, it was skinnier. It was
doubled in size on the seaward side in 1940.
Oregon State Parks Whale Watching Center,
at the north end of the bridge, offers gray whale
displays, short movies on whales, and hands-on
exhibits for children.
128.5 Little Whale Cove
129.2 Whale Cove
As the story goes, this scenic cove was
named long ago by a party of pioneer travelers
who found native Indians busy at work on the
carcass of a dead whale. Recently discovered
artifacts and historical research lead many to
believe Sir Francis Drake landed here.
129.6 Rocky Creek State Park
Picnic and restroom facilities. Good for
whale watching and birding.
129.6 Rocky Creek Bridge
This McCullough designed, reinforced concrete bridge was built in 1927, and the concrete
has recently been treated to prolong its life.
McCullough must have been influenced by
ancients architects, because this bridge is reminiscent of Roman aqueducts.

roadway has been impassable to vehicles
between here and Cape Foulweather for years.
With spectacular views, it is now open only to
walkers and bicyclists.
131.2 Cape Foulweather
Panoramic views but no facilities. Captain
James Cook named the promontory in 1778 on
a day of particularly inclement weather.Winds
can reach 100 mph during storms.A gift shop
on the north side is a real cliffhanger called The
Lookout.
132.5 Otter Rock–Devils Punch Bowl
State Natural Area
Located on the south side of Cape
Foulweather, Otter Rock is protected from the
summer afternoon winds, but greets the storms
of winter head on. Great for storm-watching.
134.1 Beverly Beach State Park
This park on Spencer Creek has beach
access, picnic facilities, and overnight camping.
The 256 campsites (128 with utility hookups)

NESTLED BETWEEN THE Coast Range and the
Pacific Ocean, Newport has been a vacation
hotspot since 1856. Newport’s various attractions
complement the natural beauty of the area. They
include the Oregon Coast Aquarium, Hatfield
Marine Science Center, two historic lighthouses,
the Bayfront, and historic Nye Beach. The
Bayfront bustles with activity, from the U.S.
Coast Guard Station, to the restaurants, family
attractions, charter boats, and galleries.
In February, Newport hosts one of the
Northwest’s largest seafood and wine festivals.
Other annual events are the Loyalty Days and
Sea Fair Festival in May, the Lincoln County Fair
and Rodeo in July, and Sea of Lights and Parade
of Boats during the holidays. Other events
throughout the year include the Lincoln County
Community Concert Series and the Oregon
Coast History Center exhibits and displays for
young people at its two museums—Burrows
House and the Log Cabin Museum.

The Yaquina Bay Lighthouse is part of Yaquina Bay State Recreation Site in Newport. Going
north on Hwy 101, take the first exit on the north side of the Yaquina Bay Bridge (milepost 142),
then double back under the bridge and take a left at the stop sign. Going south on 101 take the right
hand exit just before the bridge.
1873 stands on rocks that jut into the ocean
north of Newport. Thousands of common murres can be seen on offshore rocks. Interesting
interpretive center.Wheelchair-accessible tide
pools have been created off the lighthouse
access road, and trails crisscross the headland.
A memorial to composer Ernest Bloch, who
spent the last decades of his life at his home
nearby is erected here. Fee area. 138.2 Agate Beach Golf Course
A friendly nine-hole course.
138.5 Agate Beach State Park
Leave Hwy 101 at Little Creek and travel
half a mile south. Picnic tables and beach
access.
140.5 Nye Beach Historic District

small houses dating to Newport’s early days as
a summer resort.
141.0 Newport (ZIP 97365)
141.0 Junction Hwy 20

36 Oregon Coast Mile-by-Mile Guide 2006/2007
142.0 Yaquina Bay Bridge and Lighthouse
Yaquina Bay Lighthouse is part of the state
park at the north end of the graceful, historic
coast bridge. The lighthouse and its small tower
on top have been turned into a museum.
Yaquina Bay bridge’s dramatic, high-soaring
steel arch make this one of the most photographed of McCullough’s bridges. It is high
enough for boats to pass under and has a combination of both steel and concrete arches. At
each end of the bridge is a pedestrian plaza
with stairways leading to observation areas.
From the north end of the bridge, a fairly steep
street leads down to Bay Boulevard and
Newport’s Bayfront. Newport’s working
waterfront rubs shoulders with restaurants,
shops, and tourists attractions. Farther on, Bay
Boulevard becomes North Bay Road, following
the route of the 1885 Oregon Pacific Railroad
along the Yaquina River to Toledo. The 13-mile
scenic drive features river and estuary vistas,
historical markers, and bike and walking lanes.
142.2 Hatfield Marine Science Visitor
Center, South Beach Marina
Named for former Oregon Governor and
U.S. Senator Mark O. Hatfield, the center is part
of Oregon State University. University
researchers study the ocean and estuary in
offices and labs beyond public view. The visitor
center offers informative exhibits, intriguing
marine animals, and a touch tank, 867-0271.
Admission is free but donations are appreciated. The Port of Newport operates a
marina for private boats.Ample parking.
142.2 Oregon Coast Aquarium
This world-class facility has indoor and
outdoor exhibits.Walk paths to the sea aviary
and tufted puffins and the viewing pools where
otters, seals, and sea lions swim.“Passages of
the Deep” is an exhibit where visitors walk
through a suspended underwater acrylic tunnel, 867-3474 or www.aquarium.org. 143.4 South Beach State Park
Open grassy areas make this a sunny place
to camp. Picnic tables, access to a sandy beach,
227 campsites (all with electrical hookups),
and 27 yurts are available. On the reservation
system. 144.0 Mike Miller Educational Area
You may see ospreys along the one-mile
walking loop.
145.0 Newport Municipal Airport
147.2 Lost Creek State Park
Excellent for picnicking and beach walks.A
paved trail leads from the parking lot to the
beach. 149.0 Ona Beach State Park
On the estuary of Beaver Creek, Ona Beach
has picnic facilities and is good for birding,
kayak tours, swimming, fishing, and boating.A
charming footbridge crosses the creek to the
sandy beach.
150.7 Seal Rock (ZIP 97376)
150.9 Seal Rock State Park
Besides close-up views of offshore rocks,
the park offers access to the beach and picnic
and restroom facilities. Birders and geology
buffs appreciate this spot.
153.2 Driftwood Beach State Park
The wayside has access to the ocean and
picnic facilities.
155.5 Alsea Bay Bridge
The “new”Alsea Bay Bridge was completed
in 1991. The old bridge, built in 1936, was the
first and only large coastal bridge designed by
Conde McCullough to be replaced. The new
bridge has a clearance of 70 feet, and steel and
concrete piles reach more than 100 feet into the
bedrock below. At the south end of the bridge
is Historic Alsea Bay Bridge Interpretive
Center. Historic transportation and coastal
bridges displays in addition to general visitor
information, 563-2002. 156.0 Junction Hwy 34
Hwy 34 follows the Alsea River inland on a
narrow, winding road.

LOCATED ON THE Yaquina River just 7 miles
east of Newport on Hwy 20, Toledo’s sheltered location on the estuary of the Yaquina
River provides warmer temperatures perfect
for outdoor activities, boating, and picnicking. The Port of Toledo’s free public boat
launch is 1.7 miles south of town on South
Bay Road. Beautiful hanging flower baskets
thrive May through September in the
Historic Main Street district, where the
largest mosaic tile mural in the Northwest
depicts the history of the town next to city
hall. Several resident artists have galleries in
the Art District. A railroad historical display
interprets the rail and timber history of
Lincoln County. Ollala Valley Golf Club
offers nine holes.

164.5 Bazalgette the Whale
This intriguing and low-key art project is a
metal sculpture of a whale’s tail at the end of a
mound of earth shaped like a whale’s back.
Every 60 seconds during daylight hours, the
whale spouts. The sculptor is local artist Jim
Adler.
164.8 Yachats River
Not well-known as a fishing river, the estuary is actually a good place to catch cutthroat
trout. In the early morning and late afternoon,
herds of elk come down to the pastures by the
river to feed. There are marked viewing areas
between the 3- and 5-1/2-mile marks on
Yachats River Road. Maps available at the
Yachats Visitors Center to the Yachats North
Fork Covered Bridge.
166.9 Cape Perpetua Scenic Area
This 2700-acre wonderland, part of the
Siuslaw National Forest, has awe-inspiring
views, crashing surf, old-growth forest, and
more than 20 miles of interconnected looping
trails. The fissure in the basalt known as Devil’s
Churn provides exceptional wave action. A
paved trail leads down from the parking lot.
Cape Perpetua Campground is open May
through September and has 38 sites with no
hookups and one group site, 877-444-6777. The road to Cape Perpetua Overlook and
Stone Shelter winds upwards from the north
side of the campground. At 802 feet, the viewpoint is the highest on the coast so close to the
ocean. The stone shelter was built in the 1930s
and served as a lookout for enemy ships and
planes during World War II. Today’s visitors are
on the lookout for whales. The Visitor Center
offers RV parking, information, nature walks,
exhibits, book/gift shop, and a theater. Nearby
trailheads lead to more than 20 miles of hiking
trails to old-growth forest, tide pools, and the
ocean, 547-3289 or 563-3211. The center is
open mid-May through mid-September. Trails
are open all year. A small amount of roadside parking for
Cooks Chasm is available. The wave action has
undercut the rock to form caves and blowholes.
Pullout only, Northwest Forest Pass required. 167.6 LINCOLN/LANE COUNTY LINE

KNOWN AS THE Gem of the Oregon Coast,Yachats
is a village of about 635 people located at the
mouth of the Yachats River and nestled between
the mountains and the sea. Long known as a
vacation destination, the resort village draws
people who appreciate its uniqueness.
The landmark Little Log Church was built
more than 60 years ago from donated logs and
has recently been renovated. The residents of
Yachats turn out for their annual La De Da
Parade on July Fourth, which is followed by
music and food. The annual Smelt Fry in July
coincides with the Yachats Music Festival, a
popular three-day series of classical music
performances. People come from far and near
to attend the Original Yachats Arts and Crafts
Fair in March, the Village Mushroom Fest in
October, the Celtic Music Festival in November,
