DNK Christmas Dinner
The In & Out Club premises lend themselves
perfectly to semi-formal occasions such as
our Christmas dinners. The elegance of the
King Harald V Room, in particular, sets the
festive scene and emphasises our Klub’s
royal connections. Full marks to DNK Chair
Catharina M. Patjas and our Committee for
organising this successful event.
After a warm welcome from Catharina in the entrance hall in the sight
of a blazing fireplace, we enjoyed an aperitif of sparkling Prosecco and
an opportunity to mingle and chat in the grand Inner Hall.
Superb Musical Entertainment
During the aperitifs, we had the pleasure of listening to Håkon
Kornstad, the wonderfully talented Norwegian jazz and opera singer
and tenor saxophonist. Accompanied by pianist Anna Tillbrook, he
gave us a powerful rendition of “Marechiare”, a Neapolitan song he
has almost made his own. This was followed by the beautiful 18th
century Christmas carol “Mitt hjerte alltid vanker” and Adam’s lovely
O, Holy Night, sung in Swedish.
Three-Course Traditional Meal
The party then proceeded upstairs to the King Harald V Room for
dinner. After a toast to His Majesty the King, proposed by DNK
board member Patrick Moe, the festive meal got underway. The
In & Out chef Gary Esprit had managed to recreate a traditional
Norwegian Christmas dinner. We started with a lovely dish of
gravlaks with goat’s cheese, followed by ribbe with crackling, pork
meatballs and gravy (recipe from our Chair’s mum!). The big surprise
came with the dessert: proper risengrøt, hot rice pudding with
sugar and cinnamon, with, not to forget, an almond hidden in it. As
tradition requires, the person who found the almond in their bowl
won a marzipan pig.
The food was accompanied by Spanish Galicia wine, one white
and one red. And to spoil us completely, each table had a bottle
of Gammel Opland aquavit which went down a treat! And between
courses, Håkon treated us to some delightful improvisations on the
tenor sax.
The In & Out waiters provided excellent service, and our glasses
were topped up whenever needed. As a last refinement, our coffee
came accompanied by a home-made kransekake, the traditional
festive almond tower cake.

Lord Mayor of Westminster, Councillor the Lady Flight, Chair Catharina M.
Patjas and Lord Flight.
Lord Mayor of Westminster
Our honorary guests the Lord Mayor of Westminster, Councillor The
Lady Flight and her Consort, The Lord Flight. The Lord Mayor gave
a richly entertaining speech, telling us how she had enjoyed not only
the lighting of the Norwegian Christmas tree in Trafalgar Square a
couple of days earlier, but also how she had felt privileged to be
present at the cutting-down ceremony in the Oslo woods some
weeks before.
Attractive Raffle Prizes
And afterwards…
So, that was the end of the DNK Christmas Dinner. For some,
however, the party continued into the night in the Canning bar.
An extra bonus for them came in the form of a few encores by
the seemingly never-tiring Håkon Kornstad. Some people never
get enough!
With grateful thanks to Berit Scott. Photos by Ole Angell

As usual, the Klub had organised some rather splendid raffle prizes.
The first prize was an oil painting by Katrine Storebø, the second
two railway tickets kindly donated by NSB; then there was a dinner
for two at the In & Out and lunch for two at the Scandinavian
Kitchen. Several kilos of Jarlsberg cheese had been donated by
Tine/Norseland, and several bottles of Linie aquavit by Arcus/
Amathus. A surprise prize of Norwegian chocolate, marzipan and
Laban jelly babies came from a generous anonymous donor.

EDVARD MUNCH
Private View
This year’s exclusive Edvard Munch Private
View in co-operation with Grev Wedels
Plass Auksjoner and Danske Bank was
held in the King Harald V Room on the 17th
November. Sixty members and guests were
welcomed to a sneak preview of eight of
Edvard Munch’s works ahead of the annual
Norwegian Edvard Munch Sale at Oslo’s
Hotel Continental on the 9th December.
Photo: Cecilia Luraas
Upon arrival, the guests were greeted with a glass of wine and
afforded the chance to examine the works up close before the talk.
Renowned art historian Holger Kofoed then took the floor and gave
a fascinating discourse on Munch’s early days, his masterpiece
The Scream and then in more detail about the ladies in Munch’s
life. Some of the highlights this year were: a colour lithograph of
Madonna (1895/1902), a lithograph of The Brooch (1903), a colour
lithograph of The Sick Child I (1895) and a colour woodcut Towards
the Forest I (1897). During Holger’s talk, the celebrated actor Kåre
Conradi treated the guests to a passionate reading about The
Scream and then in more detail in Edvard Munch’s own words.
Following Holger’s talk, Hans Richard Elgheim, General Manager of
Grev Wedels Plass Auksjoner gave us an insight into the commercial
side of Munch’s oeuvre. He was able to inform the audience that
the 2015 auction was the largest Munch sale since World War
II and that the highlight was the colour lithograph of Madonna
valued at NOK 4,000,000–6,000,000. Some of the members might
remember another Madonna lithograph at the Edvard Munch
Private View in 2013, which was sold for NOK 8,200,000. Due to
a weak Norwegian krone and the lack of decent returns from other
asset classes, this annual Munch sale is of great interest for foreign
collectors and investors.

The audience was invited to stay for canapés and wine after the talk
- over which Holger and Hans Richard engaged with the guests and
discussed other facets of Munch and his work in greater detail.
Den Norske Klub would like to thank Grev Wedels Plass
Auksjoner and Danske Bank for a wonderful evening of
art. We look forward to further co-operation in 2016.
Danske Bank was very happy to sponsor the Edvard Munch
Private View because we are aiming on seeing ourselves
as a customer-centric pan Nordic Bank. Norway is a core
market for Danske Bank and by sponsoring the Edvard
Munch Private View we had an opportunity to spend an
evening together with some of our Norwegian customers
and in addition to that experience some of Edvard Munch’s
iconic graphic works. We will be happy to do that again
together with Den Norske Klub

An interview with Vice Admiral John H S McAnally
the Chairman of the In & Out
Vice Admiral John McAnally served
on the Active List of the Royal
Navy for almost forty years before
retiring in 2001. Since then, he has
had a number of roles including
National President of The Royal
Naval Association, President of the
International Maritime Confederation and Senior Military
Adviser to Flagship Training Ltd. He is a Younger Brother
of Trinity House, a Member of the Honourable Company
of Master Mariners, and belongs to five golf clubs.
His varied service career included exchange postings with both
the United States and Royal Australian Navies and two years
as Navigating Commander of the Royal Yacht Britannia. In
all, he served on board 17 ships (mostly frigates but including
minesweepers and an aircraft carrier), commanding 5 of them. He
has also held the posts of Director of the Naval Staff, Flag Officer
Training and Recruiting, and Chief Executive of the Naval Recruiting
and Training Agency. His final active list post was as Commandant
of the Royal College of Defence Studies.
Admiral McAnally joined the Naval and Military Club in 1990 and
is a great nephew of the Club’s WW2 Chairman. He became
Chairman himself in 2012.
DNK: Could you please tell us about the In & Out and how it
was founded?
The Naval and Military Club was founded in 1862 primarily at the
initiative of officers of the Royal East Kent Regiment stationed in
London who found that all the existing Armed Forces clubs had full
membership lists. It became popularly known as the “In and Out”
after the prominently labelled carriageway access of its previous
home at 94 Piccadilly. Since then a number of other clubs have
joined forces with the In and Out such as the much valued Den
Norske Klub and considerably broadened our membership.
DNK: What sort of events and activities take place at the In & Out?
The short answer is many and varied. Our beautiful home in St
James dates from the 17th century and in its long history has
been the town house of several prominent families most recently
the Astors. We enjoy a well equipped and staffed health club and
swimming pool, a squash court and billiard tables, a business
centre, world class dining and more than 50 bedrooms which
are much used by members. Club teams engage in competitive
bridge, cricket and golf. As befits our heritage we celebrate
the anniversaries of Waterloo and Trafalgar with pomp, music,
ceremonial and fun. There is a regular programme of fireside
chats at which authors launch their books or speak on topical
subjects and other events almost too numerous to describe but
ranging through wine tastings, a London Symphony Orchestra
recital, attendance at the Army/Navy rugby match, the Trooping
of the Colour, a summer ball, tours of such attractions as the
Chelsea Physic Garden and celebrations for long standing and new
membership. Something we hope for everyone.
DNK would like to thank the Chairman, Vice Admiral John H
S McAnally for taking the time to give us this interview and
looks forward to a closer relationship with the In & Out.
An interview with William de Segundo
the Vice Chairman of the In & Out and the Chairman of The Canning Club
William was born and brought up in
the UK, but has spent much of his
working life abroad, having lived in
Brazil and Uruguay and travelled
widely throughout Latin America.
While living in Brazil he played cricket
for the national team which included
playing against Argentina. Apart from
cricket, William’s other interests include game shooting,
old motor cars, opera and photography. Given his keen
interest in Latin America, William joined The Canning
Club in 1990 and became its Chairman in 2003.
DNK: Could you please tell us about The Canning Club and
how it was founded?
In May 1910 a group of people with strong Argentine connections
formed The Argentine Club in London. Its objective was to be a
respected gentlemen’s social club, intended primarily for use by
members from Argentina or those from the UK with family or other
interests there.
A 55 year lease was obtained on No 1 Hamilton Place, London,
W1 where the Club was successfully launched with a small
membership, growing to over 800 in the next three years. All the
Anglo-Argentine interests - railways, shipping lines, meat importers,
cattle breeders and various banks were involved. During the
Second World War the Club became the meeting place and “home
8
from home” for significant numbers of volunteers who had come
from Argentina and other South American countries to join the
British armed forces. Largely as a result of this influx of members
from other countries the name of the Club was changed after the
war to “The Canning Club”. This was in recognition of George
Canning who, as British Foreign Secretary in the 1820’s, had such
a profound influence on the independence and development of
countries in South America.
In August 1970 the Club merged with the Naval and Military Club,
but with The Canning Club maintaining its unique identity.
DNK: What sorts of events and activities take place at The
Canning Club?
The Canning Club organises events such as Latin American
Dining Club dinners and the Argentine Club Cup Polo at the
renowned Ham Polo Club. The Canning Club tries to help music
students with a Latin American background by offering them a
place to perform before a select audience. Please look out for the
announcement from the In & Out about the next Latin American
Dining Club recital and dinner due to take place early in May 2016.
Den Norske Klub would like to thank Chairman William de
Segundo for taking the time to give us this interview. As
many of you know The Canning Club graciously allows Den
Norske Klub to use the Canning Room for our monthly drinks.

The Wars of the Roses
DNB Luxembourg kindly invited twenty
DNK Members to a marathon evening of
Shakespearean magic at the Rose Theatre,
Kingston on the 24th October. The Wars of
the Roses, directed by Sir Trevor Nunn, has
received high acclaim both in the UK and in
Norway. A remarkable trilogy, adapted by
Sir Peter Hall and John Barton from four of
Shakespeare’s history plays (Henry VI Parts
I, II & III and Richard III), it was first directed
by Peter Hall for the Royal Shakespeare
Company in 1963 and met with instant
favour from critics and audiences alike.
The DNB guests and the DNK Members were welcomed to
the exclusive Rose Theatre hospitality area for welcome drinks
before taking their seats for the play, Edward IV. This starred
the renowned Norwegian actor Kåre Conradi, in addition to the
award-winning actors Joely Richardson and Robert Sheehan.
The stage was a replica of the original Rose Playhouse on
London’s Bankside where these original Shakespeare plays were
first performed centuries ago - it made for a perfect backdrop.
Following Kåre Conradi’s exceptional, mesmerising performance,
we were welcomed by DNB Luxembourg Managing Director
Håkon back to the hospitality area for food and refreshments.
DNB has had a great relationship with the Rose Theatre since the
production of Ghosts by Henrik Ibsen two years ago (to which
DNK was also kindly invited). When the Rose Theatre revisited
their link to Norway in having Kåre Conradi playing one of the main
characters, DNB was delighted to sponsor the production.
Sissel Karlsen from Sparebankstiftelsen DNB informed us of
DNB’s pivotal contribution to projects related to arts and culture in
Norway, ranging from small local projects to large national ones.
Over the years, Norway’s saving banks have always donated
a percentage of their profits to the local communities in which
they have operated. Sparebankstiftelsen DNB is continuing
this tradition and is supporting the forthcoming Nicolai Astrup
exhibition at the Dulwich Picture Gallery in 2016.
Kåre Conradi himself also recounted his experiences in
participating in this wonderful production and being directed by
the legendary Sir Trevor Nunn. He informed us that he will be
reprising his Shakespearean skills by performing Richard III at
Nationaltheatret in Oslo in Norway in 2016 - a performance which
should not be missed!
The central role of Richard III was brilliantly performed by recent
co-BAFTA-winner, Robert Sheehan, most famous from Misfits. In
this play, Richard III, Edvard IV’s younger brother, plots his way
to himself becoming king. Sheehan speaks in this role directly
to the audience much in the same way as Kevin Spacey does in
House of Cards, perhaps inspired by Spacey’s own performance
of Richard III.
Those who felt some trepidation at confronting such a tsunami of
high-brow culture as two Shakespeare plays in one day had their
fears allayed in no uncertain fashion; both plays were brilliantly
performed and fans of “The Bard” had a field day. Nobody in
attendance felt in any doubt of the potency of Shakespeare and
his relevance to theatre in the 21st Century
After this marathon day of theatre, the DNB guests, Kåre Conradi
and the DNK Members were invited to Chelsea Harbour Hotel for
further drinks and canapés, during which the day’s performances
were reviewed in lively discussion. DNK would like to thank DNB
Luxembourg for their most generous hospitality and for inviting
the DNK members to such a unique theatre experience. We look
forward to further co-operation in 2016.
With grateful thanks to Chair Catharina
M. Patjas. Photos by Mark Douet.

Autumn Golf Day
The climax of the DNK sporting year - the
DNK Nordea Autumn Golf Day, took place
on 13th October amidst the leafy surrounds
of Burhill Golf Club. It is an idyllic pocket of
mature parkland in the heart of Surrey and
is steeped with history, having been initially
laid out in 1726 before being landscaped
into its current form by the most legendary
of golf-course designers, Willie Park. The
house itself has a fascinating history,
having been owned by the renowned Irish
Guinness “beerage” family (whose products
were sampled in moderation after the
10
game) and was the venue where Barnes
Wallis developed the famous Dambusters’
“Bouncing Bomb”. Thankfully, the presence
of “Dick Turpin’s Cottage” by the 14th
fairway was the only evidence of banditry
during the competition!
An early morning bacon roll and coffee awaited the squad of
athletes to sustain them over the arduous 18 holes of golf that lay
ahead. The Burhill Old course, as ever, was in beautiful condition
throughout, however the weather was nowhere near as consistent!
The golfers experienced the full spectrum of conditions from
blinding warm sunshine to cool breezes – nobody left their rain gear
too deeply in their bags.
www.dennorskeklub.co.uk
Thankfully, the worst of the rain held off for the day and the golfers
gathered in the opulent clubhouse to compare scorecards and
carry out a post-mortem of the round.
Over the course of a delicious lunch, during which some of the
stresses of the contest were washed away with some cool ale,
the results were unveiled; Halvor Ellefsen, a stalwart of the DNK
golf fraternity, was declared the overall winner of the competition
and the Fuglesang Trophy. Christoffer Langfeldt was the most
successful of the guests, while Graham Falconer took the prize for
“Nearest the pin”.
Guest Simon Deeny, (despite being trapped on a
20 minute business conference call at the time), succeeded in
winning the “Longest Drive” prize. Unfortunately, there were no lady
members present on this occasion and so the Nordmannspokalen
waits for a worthy home...
DNK would like to thank Christian Hvamstad from Nordea
International Private Banking. We already look forward to the DNK
Spring Golf Day in May.
With grateful thanks to

Moe for text and photos.

DNK Fårikål Supper
One of the highlights
of Norwegian cuisine
is Fårikål (Mutton Stew
with potatoes and
cabbage). This simple
yet elegant dish is
traditionally served up
on the last Thursday
of September, however DNK members
gathered on Friday 16th October – so as
to allow a little extra time to enjoy their
sumptuous repast.
Shortly thereafter,
we all sat down and
the evening’s dining
commenced with a
fabulous appetizer:
Skagenrøre with prawns,
smoked salmon, roe
of vendace and dill in
mayonnaise with toast
melba – accompanied by a glass of chilled white wine. This was
quickly followed by the eagerly awaited Fårikål expertly prepared
by Chef Anne Bergstrøm and served with red wine. We finished
with a delicious layered dessert of apple sauce and breadcrumbs
called Tilslørte bondepiker (translated as ‘Veiled Farm Girls’!)
served with a glass of fine port wine.
Sjømannskirken, mystic and
cosy with its peaceful silence
and lighted candles, felt almost
magical and it all made for a
lovely, relaxed Fårikål Supper
evening. On arrival, the DNK
members were given a very
friendly welcome (and a glass
or two of bubbly to get into
the weekend mood!) by the
hosting team.
We all left around midnight
feeling relaxed and fuelled
to kick off the weekend with
some of us already talking
about DNK Fårikål Supper
2016! Special thanks to Line

Supper so impeccably.

Cool headed - Warm hearted.
Banking the Norwegian way.
Nature influences how cultures develop. Harsh geographical and climatic conditions have forced
Norwegians to act rationally and pragmatic, but also taught us how important it is to have faith
in people, offer a helping hand when needed, and look for opportunities wherever we go.
Our heritage provides the backbone of our business’ ability to understand the challenges of
safeguarding your international assets. We have the knowledge, the experience and the scale to
manage your wealth across borders, and the strength and capability to handle your individual
needs. Who ever you are, wherever you may be.
