They are good at thinking up ways to beat us in various competitions – and not watching chick flicks. The fantasy league wasn’t such a bad idea. I figured it would generate a friendly atmosphere of competition and provide a shared sense of engagement during the big games. Plus it might even garner me a spot on the couch on Sunday afternoons. I was all in. We started with the draft. This is where you pick your team, not get ready for war. Since my knowledge of professional football fits comfortably on the tip of a very sharp pencil, I was a little apprehensive. My sons showed me there are apps for that. Our app walked us through the whole fantasy drafting process, gave us a play-by-play rundown of who’s who in football and ranked players according to their estimated fantasy worth and scoring potential. How hard could it be? I picked my roster and was feeling optimistic about my running backs, quarterbacks and couple other backs on my team. As a bonus, I’d scored a good-looking tight end (which refers to a football player, by the way). After picking a team, you have to decide which players to put in your lineup each week. This involves research into player injuries, team matchups, home field advantage and of course who has the best looking tight end. I read the predictions and checked the stats and played Jill Pertler SLICES OF LIFE my players accordingly. The process was detailed and scientific. I was at the top of my game and ready to put it through the goalpost. Then game day hit like a linebacker, and I got clobbered like a scrambling quarterback. Apparently getting your butt kicked in fantasy football is easier than the odds lead you to believe. Either that or I’m just talented that way. For a few weeks now my mainliners have produced squat while the guys sitting on my bench put in outstanding performances. Perhaps this whole fantasy thing is more of a nightmare than I thought. It also changes the way you watch the game. Not that I’ve ever been much of a watcher, but I assume if I had been I’d pick a specific team and root for a “W.” In fantasy football, it isn’t important which team wins the game, but whether your tight end catches a touchdown pass from your quarterback with your kicker successfully making the extra point. It’s a possibility you could have a running back on one team and a wide receiver playing against your running back on the other. Knowing which team to cheer for is nearly impossible. Besides, none of this has ever been about the game; it’s about the fantasy. Win or lose, I’m just glad I got invited. It’s allowing me the opportunity to spend quality time engaged in sports talk with my guys as well as enjoying an ongoing date with them every Sunday afternoon through at least the first week in February. (Which gives non-sporty types like me a whole month before March Madness brackets become a reality.) As a bonus extra point, I’m happy to report that landing a spot on the couch during game day is no longer a fantasy. That’s a big “W” for me under any league rules. Taking a Frank Lloyd Wright day trip with a friend I first met Cindy several years ago when I hosted her for a weekend at the start of her exchange program. She ended up being placed with a host family outside of Chicago and went to college at a community college there for her one year in America. Since the locale turned out be relatively close, I hired Cindy to be my assistant one day a week doing organizational duties for me. Mainly we took day trips so I could show her the glorious Midwest. We are now forever friends, and she comes back every year as she fell head over heels in love with Chicago. At the ripe age of 26, she has traveled extensively, some trips with friends or family, some solo. Her love of travel and love of learning make her a wonderful houseguest. Cindy knows more about Chicago than many natives. She knows more about a lot of things than many people, or at least me. This past weekend we offered availability to do anything and go anywhere with her. She has studied Frank Lloyd Wright (and American architecture in general) so we traipsed up to Spring Green, Wis., to tour Taliesin, Frank’s home and studio. Taliesin (pronounced Tally – ESS – in) is on land where Frank grew up, on the Wisconsin river, set on the hillside with a view to make you sigh as if you’ve seen Heaven on earth. Taliesin is a Welsh word meaning “shining brow” and that is where he placed his dwelling, as if it is part of the jutting sandstone bluffs. The top of the hill, the crown, is not built upon. Frank liked his architecture to be organic, seeming part of the environment. He used local woods and stone, and kept his color scheme true to natural tones of the area. Even at his farm there, he had only certain chickens, cows and pigs to match his color palette. We toured the 600-acre estate and the 21,000 square foot home (37,000 square feet if you include the courtyards) along with his school Kelly Simmons COLUMNIST that still houses and teaches graduate level architecture students. Fascinating and inspiring, I still would never have commissioned Frank to build a home for me. His ceilings are too low. A fabulous day was spent in Wisconsin taking in Frank, the scenery, and cheese curds. I fancy architecture and am a bit of an information junkie, but not a devotee of any one thing or person. I appreciate people like Cindy who are walking fact factories. Frank designed nearly 500 homes and buildings in his long career. He narrowed down a list of 38 that he really loved and only 21 of his creations boast a red tile with his initials signifying his stamp of approval. Imagine our delight the next day when we were able to show Cindy the Laurent House in our hometown of Rockford, and read that it made Frank’s list of his fave 38. And imagine our surprise when we discovered it has the signature red tile at the entry door. I may not be a wealth of deep information but I do love to provide a lovely experience for guests and find things that light them up. My thanks to Frank and the Laurent House board for making a German gal (and this American gal) very happy. Lessons I learned include there is always something new to explore and appreciate, and there are always treasures under one’s nose that we may not discover until someone else comes along to stir our interest. To that, I give my own stamp of approval. Kelly Epperson Simmons has built houses of cards, sticks, and still loves dollhouses. White encouraged vehicle owners to be mindful of their vehicle registration status to ensure they renew in a timely manner and avoid driving on expired vehicle stickers. He also emphasized that more vehicle owners will be forced to visit facilities to Flu renew their vehicle registration stickers because without a reminder notice they will not have a pin number needed to renew online. However, people who have signed up to receive electronic reminder notices will continue to receive them by email. Stateline Mass Transit... 222081 SPRINGFIELD — Illinois Secretary of State Jesse White announced last week that his office will suspend mailing out vehicle registration renewal reminder notices to the public due to the lack of a state budget. White noted that by suspending this service, which will save approximately $450,000 per month, his office will be able to prolong the ability to mail vehicle registration renewal stickers, titles and license plates to vehicle owners for a few months longer before the postage account is depleted. “The lack of a Fiscal Year 2016 budget is adversely impacting the Secretary of State’s office, and threatens to jeopardize the services we provide to the public,” said White. “Without a state budget in place, we are doing what we can to manage so that we may serve the people of Illinois for as long as possible. “As a result, difficult decisions like suspending renewal reminder notice mailings are decisions we are being forced to make.” White also noted if the office’s postage account runs out before January, he will be unable to mail the annual license to auto dealers, which they need to operate in Illinois legally, as well as critical incorporation paperwork needed for businesses in Illinois. Last week, White issued a letter to the governor and legislative leaders outlining concerns on how the budget stalemate is negatively impacting his office. Some of the concerns included critical computer maintenance and data security issues as well as Driver and Vehicle Services facility operations. White is determined to prioritize difficult cuts to ensure his office can provide core services to the public for as long • Locally Owned & Operated • Professional & Insured Crews • True Lifetime Warranties, Guaranteed Forever! • Serving Northern Illinois for 10 Years Been told you need back surgery?
