PEER PRESSURE
The human being is always influenced by people in his circle of friends, sometimes
positively and sometimes, unfortunately, negatively.
Peer conformity, sometimes referred to as peer pressure, occurs when adolescents
choose to adopt the attitudes and behaviors of others because of real or imagined
pressure.
It is very common among teenagers the desire to behave in a manner similar to the
“group”, in order to take part and to be accepted by others. It is a strong feeling of
being influenced to do something they wouldn’t usually do because their peers are
doing it. Across a variety of cultural settings, adolescents tend to be friends with those
who are most like them. In fact, sociocultural, uncultural characteristics are usually
the strongest predictors of friendship formation. Different types of peer groups have
unique abilities to encourage negative or positive behaviors in their members.
Some songs also influence behavior, since there is usually a preferred musical style.
Unfortunately this collective behavior can be used to offend, discriminate or reject
someone from society and it may be understood as bullying,
On the other hand, peer pressure can also be a positive influence when it helps to
challenge or motivates you to do your best.
