WSU Foundation receives $2 million gift from
the Kansas Health Foundation
This contribution is the largest gift endowed to support faculty in the history of the Fairmount
College of Liberal Arts and Sciences
The Wichita State University Foundation received $2 million from the Kansas
Health Foundation to fund the Kansas Health Foundation Distinguished Chair of
Strategic Communication in the Elliott School of Communication. The donation was
announced at a news conference on Aug. 22 in Elliott Hall.
This is the largest gift endowed to support faculty in the history of the Fairmount
College of Liberal Arts and Sciences. It qualifies for the state Board of Regents Faculty
of Distinction program, which will supplement the payout of the fund, extending the
impact of the contribution.
Marni Vliet, president and CEO of the Kansas Health Foundation, said, “We are
very happy to strengthen the community linkage between the foundation and the
university and to ensure the future of strategic communication for WSU students. This
endowment will help bolster the Elliott School’s efforts to educate tomorrow’s leaders.”
“Strategic communication involves all facets of the communication profession:
public relations, advertising, organizational and interpersonal communication, and
journalism,” said Susan Huxman, associate professor and director of the Elliott School
of Communication, at the news conference. “This gift will enable us to better teach the

The Fairmount Society is Wichita State
University’s most distinguished support
group. A new category was created last
year to recognize the university’s top
tier of donors, the Fairmount Society
Lifetime Achievement Members, those
whose total outright giving exceeds
$1 million. Lifetime membership in
the Fairmount Society is extended to
those contributing $200,000 or more
in a lifetime. Annual members gave
a minimum of $20,000 during fiscal
year 2005. Fairmount Society members
are included in the President’s Club.
Associate status is given to corporations,

“We just love the art,” said Shannon
Michaud, Gerald’s wife. “‘Mighty Casey’ and
‘First Mitt’ were at our house, but we thought
they needed to be seen by a lot of people. It
was fun to see little kids get close to ‘First
Mitt’ and look at it eye-to-eye.”
The third sculpture donated was “Put Me
in Coach.” It has a special meaning because
it bears the same number as the jersey worn
by Greg Drumright, the Michaud’s son-in-law,
when he pitched for the WSU baseball team.
