Spring Cleaning time!
Did you know that
cleaners we use on
a day-to-day basis
can be substituted by
mixtures you can make
yourself? Said DIY
mixtures are generally
safer, cost less and are
easy to make. Take
a minute to look up
DIY cleaners online.
General
ingredients you’ll
find are; baking soda,
lemon, vinegar, water,
salt and so much more.
And several of the
recipes you find online
can be versatile.

V-Week Highlight
YVCC Students Against Violence Towards Women
On February 13 at 11:30 am you
might have noticed or heard about
the large march that took place at
YVCC. It started near the clock
tower and the Hopf Union
Building (the HUB). Students

gathered to march against violence
towards women. In total, about 120 students (men and women combined),
walked around campus to show their support for the cause.
The men were given the option to wear high heels so they could literally walk
in “Her” shoes provided by Yakima Comprehensive Mental Health. 16-17 men
took the challenge to wear the vibrantly colored heels of gold, pink and red.
They walked around YVCC
waving signs, chanting “She is
not a piece of meat!” and “No
means no!”
So how did the idea of this
march come to ASYVCC’s
Student Government President
Noah Hall? “I heard about the
march from Kim Foley from
Yakima Comprehensive Mental
Health. I feel strongly about
raising awareness about violence
against women and in order to
get people to follow you have to
lead by example.” He was one Students wait for the march to start.
of the first to put on the high heels for the march and lead the large group
around campus.
“It seemed like the right thing to do. [I have] never worn heels before and I was
shocked to see that they had them in my size. So [I] figured if they would go
through all the trouble to find them in my size, I might as well use them. Plus
protests are fun.” Joey Gray just one of the brave guys that walked in heels to
show support.
Many students grabbed signs also provided by Yakima Comprehensive
Mental Health as they walked around the campus; waving them proudly in the
air. Some of the men didn’t like wearing the heels. “I didn’t like wearing [the]

Hey Instructors!
Do you have an extra copy of your textbook? Instead of
loaning them to a student as you may have been doing, you can
loan it to the library and then all your students will
have some access to it.

YVCC Offers
Courses with an Honors Option
Are you a focused and goal-oriented student? Ever wish you could learn more
about your favorite subject? Many YVCC classes can now be taken with an
honors option. Honors students sign contracts with their instructors that outline
the agreed upon extra work.
Students who successfully complete their contracts and pass the class with at
least a B+ get an “H” on their transcript, indicating that they completed
additional honors work. Any student with an interest and a strong academic
record may consider taking a course for honors.
This is particularly important for students going into highly competitive
professions.
If you think you might be interested, contact the Honors Program coordinator
Heidi Shaw at [email protected] or talk to your instructor.

Don’t own a computer?
Borrow one from the Media Center on the second floor of
Raymond Hall!
Clearwire made 20 laptops available to YVCC which will
be loaned to currently enrolled students. The laptops are
Lenovo ThinkPads 400 series, loaded with WIFI and
Microsoft Software appropriate for your class work.
The laptops will be loaned for seven days and must be returned on or before the due date to
avoid daily late fines. Laptops returned late will be assessed a late fine of $25.00 per day
up to the replacement value of the laptop.
The student borrowing a laptop assumes all responsibility for returning it to the Media
Center on or before the due date. If a laptop is lost or stolen, the student is responsible for
paying the replacement value of $1,700. Damage charges and charges for missing
components will also be assessed. Those assessments depend on the type and extent of the
damage and which parts are missing when it is returned.
Laptops may not be renewed, but a second different laptop may be borrowed upon return of
the first, if one is available. Upon return of the second laptop, you must wait one day if you
want to borrow for a third time. Laptops will not be placed “on hold,” but will be loaned
on a first-come-first-served basis.
Questions? Ask the Media Center Staff either in person or by phone at 574-4982.

heels. I have a stigma against heels. I believe they are useless abominations of fashion; [ladies] why
do you bother putting yourself through that painfully disgusting thing?” Gray asked.
Gray also admitted that although his red heels were good looking he would have liked another color
of shoe, “I thought [the march] was pretty fun, I was jealous of Noah Hall; his heels were gold and
looked far more fashionable and almost cool for a man to wear.”
Others, such as Cody Dewitt, didn’t mind as much, “High heels are easy to wear and walk in. I
thought it would be harder to walk wearing them than it was. And I hope you liked the pink pumps!”
“The march was awesome. Very school spirited and I was amazed at how many guys wore heels,”
Said Jamie Davis, ASYVCC, Student Government Vice President.
Overall the event had a wonderful turnout and ended up on local news stations. With all the spirit
and the amazing turn out for the event and the spirited people chanting for the cause. The message
was loud and clear around campus YVCC is against violence towards women and always will be.
