2013 NC Turkey Festival
I
3
A note from the Executive Director
n August I received an email that stated, “Melissa, I know you have a lot
going on and are extremely busy BUT don’t forget the deadline for the Turkey
Tabloid is September 4th and you can start sending things when you get
them. – Robin Huffman” (also known to me as Lulu but don’t tell her I told
you)
I’m not sure how the Turkey Festival got here so fast or where the years have gone.
I should not be surprised, as each year I say, “I guess the old saying ‘The More Things
Change The More They Stay The Same’ is very true.”
In 1984 Raeford-Hoke County was excited that a group of citizens had gotten
together to form what was then called the Hoke Hobnob Festival. This festival was
held at Hoke County High School with vendors filling the courtyard and with a
concert by The Embers held on Saturday during the day. It was so hot that day but
it did not prevent my classmates and I from sitting in our chairs or on our blankets,
dancing on the ball field to “I Love Beach Music”. Who could forget Marvin Lynn
Maxwell going on stage and playing the keyboards, in our opinion better than the
keyboard player for the band. Who would have imagined that 29 years later the Festival
would have grown to a weeklong event that offers diverse activities for our community
and that I would be working for that same Festival that so many years ago I had
volunteered to help with.
In 1985 the Festival grew and changed. It was no longer a one day event but a
three day event. Another huge change was the name for that year it became the “NC
Turkey Festival”. Funny how no matter how things change they stay the same. You
see, in 1985 I worked for Dickson Press, Inc. aka The News-Journal as a typesetter
and I, along with Robin Huffman, Diane Bowers, Martha Upchurch, as well as many
others, worked on the very first Turkey Tabloid. Here 29 years after the first Beach
Music Concert I’m still dancing in the ball field though to songs like “The Wobble”
or “Electric Slide” and 28 years after the first Turkey Tabloid I’m still typing articles,
hearing in my memory Connie Ellis saying “girls we have to get this tabloid finished”
but now it is Robin saying “Melissa time is getting close aka girl you got to get this
tabloid finished” - the more things change the more they stay the same.
Over the years the Festival has had many directors and Executive Directors that
make the Festival the success it is each year, this year is no different. Each one has
brought new ideas, events and ways to make the Festival something that RaefordHoke County can be proud of. Not only has the Board of Directors done an amazing
job of planning, re-vamping annual events and adding new events such as the Choir
Celebration Day and 5K Bike Race, bringing back the pony rides and petting zoo, two
entertainment stages and another great band for the ending concert but they have
worked hard during the year to raise money to help host the Festival, events such as
quarterly Bingo and selling concessions at the Fire Works on July 4th have helped
to be able to do all that is done but I don’t think people realize this or not BUT the
Directors who do all of this, who give multiple hours of their time away from their
families and are not able to actually see or enjoy the events they have worked so
hard to plan due to working each event either selling tickets, concessions, handling
situations, etc., they do so for free, simply because they love the Festival, want the
festival to be successful and succeed so that Raeford-Hoke County can be proud. They
want to promote cultural arts, as well as, the businesses in Hoke County that are so
vital in making the Festival a success and they want to offer the citizens of RaefordHoke County and surrounding areas with a fun-filled week of great activities and
entertainment for everyone - this is no different from what the first visionaries 29
worked towards – the more things change the more they stay.
Over the past six years I have been honored and blessed to hold the position of
Executive Director and I can tell you this Festival, the planning and working at each
event has brought me far more joy than I could ever express in a tabloid letter. I have
made many wonderful friends and have become so accustomed to certain things
happening each year. Like in March or April being stopped on the street with the
question “Have you started planning this year’s Festival yet gal” or “What color are
the shirts this year” and my favorite one that I get at least 30,000 times a year “Are
you moving it back to the street this year, sure do miss it being on the street.” Well,
the answers have been “Yes we started planning for this one before last year was even
over” and “I’m sorry I liked it on the street too but with the downtown revitalization
we can’t move it back to the street, I’ve suggested it but keep getting told no.”
Funny, people even see me shopping or having lunch and say “will you sign me up
for the card tournament and senior day?”
This year has been no different though I must admit the questions have changed
to - “You mean you’re having the Turkey Festival even with the Turkey Plant closing?”
or “What is the Festival going to do with the House of Raeford closing?” I have been
asked these so often I wake myself up at night saying – “Yes, the festival is going to
go on and actually we have more events than last year” or “The House of Raeford
has not closed only a portion of it has and they are still very much involved with the
Festival as a corporate gold sponsor, not only do they give money but also product”.
The first year I sold hot dogs at the Parade I woke myself up saying “ketchup,
mustard, chili, slaw and onions” - the more things change the more they stay the same.
This year we have been bombarded with the question, “So next year will it be the
Turkey Festival or the Chicken Festival” which the answer is always the same “The
Festival is looking forward to celebrating 30 years of the NC Turkey Festival and I can
pretty much promise that we will not be changing the name to the ‘Chicken Festival’
or “will the lunchroom workers (Hoke County School Child Nutrition Services) be
cooking the dressing and with the House of Raeford closing will we be having Turkey
and dressing or fried chicken?” Yes, there will be turkey, dressing, green beans, yams,
cranberry sauce and everyone’s favorite crusty rolls AND YES the lunchroom workers
will be cooking the turkey and the dressing from their recipes – the more things
change the more they stay the same.
In 1984 at the Hobnob Festival and every year since 1985 the NC Turkey Festival
has been an event that Raeford-Hoke County could be proud of, it has been filled
with musical entertainment, various vendors, athletic events, children’s events, events
for seniors, car shows, cook offs, Turkey Bowls, PARADES and has been planned
by a Board of citizens who work many hours to assure the Festival is a time of fun,
fellowship with friends and make new friends. Every Executive Director from the first
until now has felt overwhelmed, challenged and a feeling of great pride in their boards
who worked so diligently to make it a success, this year will be no different.
The 29th Annual Turkey Festival will continue to be all the wonderful things that
everyone remembers and looks forward to — there are card tournaments, senior day,
turkey legs, collard sandwiches, petting zoo and pony rides. The 29th Annual NC
Turkey Festival will be a GREAT FESTIVAL and a wonderful time for our community
to celebrate much more than turkey BUT community love and peace as well. The
Board has done their part now it is up to you so come and “Find Love, Peace and
Turkey at the North Carolina Turkey Festival” because as you have seen repeatedly in
this letter THE MORE THINGS CHANGE THE MORE THEY STAY THE SAME
and you are needed to make all the hard work that has been put in pay off because it is
for you that this Festival was started and continues on 29 years later.

2013 NC Turkey Festival
Events you won’t want to miss…
Annual NC Turkey
Bowl
Play begins at 7:30 p.m. on Friday,
September 13 at Raz Autry Stadium with
the Hoke County High School Bucks
hosting the South View Tigers for the title
of Turkey Bowl Champions. The pre-game
ceremony will begin at 7 p.m. with skydivers,
provided by Raeford Aviation, amazing the
crowd with their skydiving abilities. The last
jumper is to land on the 50-yard line with
the game ball. Be there early to support the
skydivers, the athletic department of Hoke
County, the NC Turkey Festival and, most
importantly, the Fighting Bucks!!!
4th Annual Family
Bike (Bicycle) Ride
The North Carolina Turkey Festival is
pleased to join in promoting “health and
fitness” at the Annual Family Bike Ride
held at Sandy Grove Elementary School.
Jill Rogitz of Sandy Grove states, “The
reason behind this family bike ride is to
get kids and parents out of the house, off
of electronic devices and onto a bike and
getting physical.” When approached to be
a part of this wonderful event, the Festival
could not refuse. So, for a fun filled family
day, head out to Sandy Grove Elementary
School at 9 a.m. to sign in the for the free
bike ride that will start at 10 a.m. There
will be prizes, fun, fellowship and outdoor
activities.
Tennis Tournament
The 29th Annual North Carolina
Turkey Festival and the Hoke County
High School Tennis Program is proud to
bring back the Tennis Tournament. The
categories for this year’s tournament will
include Adult Men’s Singles/Doubles,
Women’s Singles/Doubles, Youth Boys’
Singles/Doubles, Girls’ Singles/Doubles
and Mixed Doubles. The tournament will
held at the Tennis Complex located on the
campus of Hoke County High School on
Saturday, September 14 under the direction
of Nelson James. For more information,
contact Nelson at 910-476-8673 or via
email at [email protected].
6th Annual Turkey
Throw Down
The Turkey Throw Down has become
a great tradition of the NC Turkey Festival
and, no, turkeys are actually not thrown
down. This event is a professional wrestling
event that is co-sponsored with Ring Wars
Carolina. The 6th Annual Turkey Thrown
down will take place at the Hoke County
High School Gymnasium, Saturday,
September 8 with doors opening at 6 p.m.
and matches beginning at 7 p.m. Come
out and support your favorite Ring Wars
Carolina Wrestler at this family-oriented
event. When owners Eddie and Joyce
Bullard of Classic Design and Eddie and
Djuna Miller of Miller’s Garage attended
the event in 2012, they approached the
Festival asking to sponsor this event so that
children under the age of 11 and physically/
mentally handicapped living in group
homes could be admitted for free, stating
that the joy had by the children and special
needs adults that attended was amazing
and to see the wrestlers interact with them
brought joy to anyone in attendance. This
year entry to the match will be FREE up
to age 11 and $5.00 for anyone over age 12.
Minors must be accompanied by an adult.
Auto and Motorcycle
Show
The annual Auto and Motorcycle Show
is going to be a little different this year but
will still offer a great opportunity for anyone
who would like to showcase their vehicle
and motorcycle at the NC Turkey Festival.
This year’s show is sponsored by Lippard
Auto Parts and Equipment, Raeford Oil
Company, State Farm Insurance, John
T. Owen, SunPath Products and the NC
Turkey Festival.
Best Wishes to the
2013 Turkey Festival
The show will be hosted by the Raeford
Woodmen of the World and registration
fees are $15.00 per vehicle in advance
and $20.00 the day of show. Another big
change is the event will be held on Saturday,
September 14 at the Hoke County High
School parking lot near Raz Autry Stadium.
All monies raised will go to cover the
cost of trophies and dash plates and will
be split between the Summer Youth
Camp Program, hosted by Woodmen of
the World, and the NC Turkey Festival.
Applications can be found at www.
ncturkeyfestival.org or at the NC Turkey
Festival Office located at 101 North Main
Street. For more information or to register
contact Melissa Pittman at 904-2424.
Choir Celebration Day
One of the new events hosted by the
North Carolina Turkey Festival is “Choir
Celebration Day” that will be held on
Saturday, September 14 at J.W. Turlington
Auditorium. Preparations for this day
actually began with a thought several
years ago but President Valerie Livingston
took a thought and turned it into a reality.
Beginning in June, individuals from several
area churches began meeting to practice
and formed what is now the Raeford-Hoke
Community Choir, which is sponsored by
the NC Turkey Festival. The Community
Choir, under the direction of Minister
David Purcell and Minister Patrick Grace,
has been practicing for four (4) months
with plans to hold a Christian event for
anyone who would like to participate.
From that came “Choir Celebration
Day”. Any choir in Hoke County, as well
as surrounding areas, can come this night
and share the talents your church has been
blessed with. Each choir, be it a Mass
Choir, Men’s, Seniors, Women’s, Youth or
even individuals, duets and trios, is asked to
come to Turlington Auditorium at 3 p.m. to
sign your choir up to perform. Performing
choir members will be allowed in for free
and those attending to enjoy the music of
these choirs and the Raeford-Community
Choir will be charged $5.00. The event will
begin at 5 p.m. with opening prayer and the
Pledge of Allegiance and then the music
will begin. Encourage your choirs to be a
part of this wonderful event. What better
way to “Find Love, Peace and Turkey”
than hearing the Gospel through songs of
praise, worship, love and peace!!!

Raeford-Hoke
Community Choir
to perform
Under the direction of Minister David Purcell and Minister Patrick
Grace, the Raeford-Hoke Community Choir is comprised of various
individuals from around Raeford-Hoke County and surrounding counties.
Churches represented in the choir include St. James Church of God,
Pittman Grove Baptist Church, Ephesus Baptist Church, Kingdom Living
Worship Church, Christ Freewill Church, Friendship Grove and Sandy
Grove AME Zion. As you can see, the choir is a blend of different
denominations, races and sex but when they come together, the harmony
is amazing. Singing a variety of praise and worship, contemporary and
gospel songs, the choir brings a very unique and special attraction to the
Festival. So be sure to come out on Saturday, September 14 at 5 p.m.
to Turlington Auditorium for a night of “Choir Celebration” with the
Community Choir and then again on Saturday, September 21 at 10:45 a.m.
on the Entertainment Stage at the Park. The last time to see the RaefordHoke Community Choir get their praise on is at the Grand Opening of
the FirstHealth Moore Regional-Hoke Campus on Sunday, September 22
at 3:45 p.m. There are lots of opportunities to “Find Love, Peace and
Turkey” with the Raeford-Hoke Community Choir at the NC Turkey
Festival.

Arvie Bennett returns
with the Arvie Jr. Band
Arvie Bennett participated in the NC Turkey Festival in 2012 and was a crowd pleaser.
This year Arvie returns with his band to bring a great array of music for Festival goers
beginning at approximately 2 p.m. on Saturday, September 21. A diverse mixture of race,
ethnicity, musical genres and backgrounds, the Arvie Jr. Band is just like the USA, a melting
pot with African Americans, Cherokee Indians, Irish and many more. They find their
diversity is their greatest asset. The Festival is excited to have the talent of such a diverse
group who will not be pigeon-holed into a certain genre. Their music is as diverse as their
backgrounds, covering all ends of the spectrum from Heavy Metal to Blues to Rap to
Country and a little of everything in between.
The Ingrams to perform
The Festival welcomes “The Ingrams” as part of an amazing line up of musical
entertainment that will help Festival goers “Find Love, Peace and Turkey” on Saturday,
September 21 at 1 p.m. at the Entertainment Stage in McLauchlin Park. The Ingrams are
a family band that performs bluegrass and gospel in a variety of traditional and modern
styles and several original songs. In the past five years, they have played at many festivals
and churches in the North Carolina area but love to travel anywhere to their unique blend
and style of music. Members of the group include Eddie Ingram – Guitar, Mandolin,
Bass, Vocals; Ashley Wood – Fiddle, Vocals; Andy Ingram – Banjo, Vocals; Aaron Ingram
– Guitar, Vocals; and Natalie Ingram – Bass, Mandolin, Vocals.
As you can tell, there is a lot of talent in this group so make plans to see their
performance at 1 p.m. You will not be disappointed.

Tyris Jones Returns to Find Love, Peace and
Turkey at the NC Turkey Festival
In 2012 Tyris Jones came to the North
Carolina Turkey Festival to “Do the
Wobble” with storytelling on Children’s Day
and in the Park. This year Tyris returns in
hopes to help us all “Find Love, Peace and
Turkey” with whimsical and historical tales.
Tyris will be performing on the Children’s
Entertainment Stage found in Peyton’s
Corner of the Park from 11 a.m. to 12 p.m.
on Saturday, September 21, but for those of
you who missed Tyris, here is an opportunity
for you to learn a little about Tyris. When
Tyris D. Jones told his mother he was going
to pursue a career in the performing arts, her
reaction was less than positive. “She looked
at me and said, ‘Boy, you must have bumped
your head,’ “ Jones said. “I said, ‘Mama,
I’m following my heart.’” In the more than
20 years since that conversation, Jones has
continued to follow his heart. His path has
taken him from backstage work with a top
hip-hop artist to his current career as an
award-winning storyteller.
Jones, 44, was born and grew up in
Laurinburg. He graduated from Scotland
High School in 1987 and enrolled at N.C.
Central University. Although drama was his
major, Jones said he didn’t get serious about
it until about a year into college. “Once I
got to college, it was like, I don’t know if
I want to do this,” he said. “But I took that
leap of faith and tried it.” At N.C. Central,
Jones acted in plays such as “Dreamgirls.”
He graduated in 1992 with a degree in
theater arts. Jones served an internship at
the Crossroads Theatre Company in New
Brunswick, N.J., specializing in the technical
aspect of the stage. In 1999, when Jones
was working at the theater as a master
electrician, Crossroads won a Tony Award
for Outstanding Regional Theater. Jones has
performed in local plays, including “Driving
Miss Daisy,” and touring with a show called
“Love Makes Things Happen.”
Jones found work as a substitute teacher
in Scotland County schools and eventually
became a teacher’s assistant that led to his
first foray into storytelling. “This teacher
found out I was in theater and asked me to
tell a story to the kids one day,” Jones said.
“I said, ‘Mmm ... OK.’” Jones found that he
enjoyed telling tales. What’s more, he found
his acting skills were transferable to the
medium of storytelling. Jones said there’s
nothing like the direct connection he gets
from being on stage by himself in front of
a rapt audience. “I’ve been in a gymnasium
in front of about 700 students and you
could hear a pin drop,” he said. “Or, I’ve
been in a classroom where you have your
so-called ‘rough kids,’ and they’d give me a
compliment. That lets me know I did my
job.”
During a February performance at
Sandhills Community College in Pinehurst,
NC Turkey Festival Director Joyce Bullard
experienced Jones display his storytelling
skills for an audience of students and faculty
at a Black History Month program. She
stated that “Jones took the stage wearing
a turban and colorful shirt and led the
audience in an African welcome song.” She
was in awe, coming back immediately to the
Festival Board of Directors saying “we have
go to get him for the Festival.”
Bullard stated that her favorite time of the
program was when Jones pulled out a mirror
and makeup from his “magic box” and began
an on-stage transformation. “He faced the
audience and Jones had assumed the persona
of a slave who finds freedom via Harriet
Tubman’s Underground Railroad.” Bullard
said that Jones looped a chain on a cane
which he balanced on his neck and shoulders,
symbolizing an oxen’s yoke. He walked
around the stage hunched over, relating a
journey from Africa into enslavement in
America, telling of being transported by ship,
of meeting his wife only to be sold to separate
plantations and finally their reuniting. Bullard
said, “Some members of the audience sang
along with the gospel songs Jones sang
throughout his performance and that she
found his performance captivating, heartfelt,
educational and that she knew right then and
there that the children and citizens deserved
the opportunity to see this wonderful
storyteller.”

Robert Dale Charles aka Bobby
back to “Find Love, Peace and Turkey”
with family, friends
At the 2012 Festival, Robert Dale Charles was one of the
scheduled entertainers. As the day drew near and people started
listening, they realized this Robert Dale was actually “Bobby
Charles”. Well, Bobby had such a great time and the people
enjoyed him so much that he is back for the 2013 Festival to
help people “Find Love, Peace and Turkey” through his musical
style. Bobby learned to play the guitar by the computer and his
voice is a gift he claims to be from God. Robert, known to
his family and friends as Bobby, was born on April 14, 1987
and is the son of William Joseph Charles of High Point and
Melinda Ann Charles and grandson of the late Alice Charles
of Raeford.
Shortly after graduating high school from Union Pines in
Cameron, Bobby discovered he had testicular cancer. After
going through two major surgeries, today he is a cancer
survivor. His love for music helped him through many
difficult times in his life such as his battle with cancer and
the battle his grandmother Alice fought. One of the things
he enjoys is to be with his family and play the guitar and
sing for them and the Festival is glad to have him return
and share his talents with Festival goers. Bobby will take
the stage immediately following the announcement of the
Cooking Contest, Art Awards Program and Bake Off or
at approximately 12:30 p.m. So be sure to stop by to say
“Hi” to Bobby and to enjoy some great music.

All-American Chorus...
a rich part of airborne history
The All-American Chorus is a nonprofit musical group composed of
Division Troopers representing every unit within the Division. The chorus
was formed in November 1967 to sing at Sunday services in the Division
Chapel. At that time the chorus consisted of about 15 members.
Members of the chorus underwent RECONDO training in March 1970 to prepare for their
role as the Division’s Long Range Reconnaissance Platoon (LRRP). They recorded their first
record entitled “The All-American Chorus,” which contained several songs and ballads about
the Airborne and the Army.
In February 1971, the chorus was selected by the division commander to jump, as a unit, with
the MCI-1 steerable parachute, so that assembly time on the ground could be reduced.
During a period of increased emphasis on the All Volunteer Army, the chorus performed
at several professional and college baseball and football games as part of the pre-game or half
time ceremonies
During 1984 the chorus made several appearances including a trip to the island of Grenada
for their Independence Day Celebration.
In 1985 the All-American Chorus produced a video for the 82nd Airborne Division to be
used by various U.S. Army recruiting battalions throughout the country as a tool to interest young
people in joining the Army. In September of that same year the chorus performed on the Jerry
Lewis Muscular Dystrophy Telethon.
The chorus participated in Operation Neptune in 1989. The operation was a recreation of
the June 6, 1944 D-Day invasion of Normandy France. Like the original invasion, elements of
the 82nd Airborne Division were transported to the United Kingdom. There, along with the
chorus, they prepared for the jump into France. On the morning of June 6, 45 years and a few
hours after the historic invasion, 2,500 paratroopers and the All-American Chorus dropped into
a field near Ste. Mere Eglise, France.
The chorus was then off to Saudi Arabia in late 1990 throughout spring 1991 with the 82nd
Airborne Division during its deployment to Southwest Asia to participate in Operation Desert
Shield and Storm.
In 1994 the All-American Chorus returned to Normandy and Holland to commemorate
the 50th anniversary of Operations Neptune and Market-Garden. They also released their latest
recording, “We Were There”, that same year. Today the 82nd Airborne Division’s All-American
Chorus performs throughout the Continental United States.
