VULCRAFT UTILIZES BIM
ON COMPLEX CASINO EXPANSION
4 NUCOR STEEL PRODUCTS NEWS
Vulcraft Group recently modeled, manufactured and delivered 333
joists for the expansion of FireKeepers Casino in Battle Creek, Michigan.
Building Information Modeling (BIM) software was used to ensure that all
joists and deck were created to fit precisely, minimizing change orders upon
delivery.
“This project included elements that had potential for being somewhat
difficult to accurately manufacture,” said Greg Mittendorf, Business
Development Manager at Vulcraft. “Incorporating our model into the process
saved valuable time and more than $60,000.”
The casino expansion gave the building an instantly recognizable aspect,
utilizing Vulcraft deck to create the unique “bird’s beak” entry. Standout
components include two joists at 96-inches by 120-feet and six field-spliced
joists at 120-inches by 120-feet; the total weight of the joists, deck and
bridging came to more than 400 tons.
Douglas Steel Fabricating Corporation of Lansing, Mich. contacted and hired
Vulcraft to supply the joists and deck for the project. Vulcraft supplied the
model to Douglas Steel to incorporate into their BIM that included all the
details required by the HVAC contractor to ensure the duct work could be
exactly prefabricated and routed with no interference.
“The Vulcraft team was able to take the owner’s vision and really bring it to
life,” said Lawrence Kruth, Vice President of Engineering, Technology & Safety
of Douglas Steel Fabricating Corporation. “Seeing the layers of construction
in BIM made a daunting expansion simpler to visualize.”
The addition of a hotel, event center, bingo hall and warehouse were included
in the expansion. Long span joists were used when constructing the event
center, which will be used for concerts and entertainment, as well as other
large gatherings.
Vulcraft used BIM on the FireKeepers Casino Hotel project, located in Battle
Creek, Michigan, to ensure that all joists and deck were manufactured to fit
precisely, which minimized change orders upon delivery.

FISHER & LUDLOW GRATING
USED IN LANDMARK PROJECT
Situated on Vancouver’s waterfront with spectacular
views of mountains, ocean, and parks, the
Vancouver Convention Centre West brings together
the natural ecology, vibrant local culture, and built
environment.
Besides being the world’s first LEED Platinum
certified convention center with the largest
non-industrial green roof in North America, the
building also features over 186,000 square feet
of aluminum bar grating supplied by Fisher
and Ludlow. The grating was used strictly in an
architectural application, for the fascia and soffits
on the exterior of the building as well as trim around
some of the escalators in the interior spaces.
6 NUCOR STEEL PRODUCTS NEWS
The aluminum grating that was supplied has 3/4 x
1/8 bearing bars on 11/16” centers.
“This was an especially unique product for us, as we
typically do not manufacture aluminum bar grating
with such light bearing bars,” said Nick Kaarsemaker,
Fisher & Ludlow.
The scope of work consisted of supplying cut to
length panels for site pre-installation. The preinstallation, done by the contractor Flynn Canada,
included field fitting the panels to suit the wood
timbers used with the soffit construction, as well
as any cutouts and trimming required to fit the
building supports.
Once this was complete, the panels
were removed to be anodized, and
then returned for final site installation.
The result, as you can see from the
photos, was a very visually stunning
look that greatly enhanced the
structure, and added to the uniqueness
of the project. This is one of Fisher and
Ludlow’s largest aluminum grating
projects to date.

AMS ROOF
RETROFIT SAVES
DETERIORATING
RECREATIONAL
CENTER
“With AMS our company has
access to some of the most
advanced products, people
and solutions in the building
industry,” said Hunter Brown,
subcontractor for Benchmark
Building and Irrigation. “We were
able to erect the 10,000 square
foot retrofit roof cost-effectively
and efficiently to meet the needs
of the university.”
Architectural Metal Systems (AMS), is a business unit of American Buildings
Company, manufacturing metal standing seam roof systems for new and
retrofit construction markets throughout North America and traditional
metal roof panel and wall panel systems for remodeling applications.
Benchmark Buildings and Irrigation, an Architectural Metal System
Authorized Roofer, recently retrofit the Hawks Nest, a recreational center
at Chowan University, with a new metal Standing Seam 360 barrel roof.
The small private school in Murfreesboro, N.C., had a badly deteriorating
roof; disposal of the roof was too costly and replacing the building was
not an option.
Matching the school colors, the royal blue panels were easily installed
giving the multipurpose facility a more functional and attractive roofing
system. Refining the structural details of placement and bracing were
critical for completion of the project. By taking the dome out of the
building and adding a 4:12 gable roof, Benchmark removed any damming
issues at the panel laps to allow sufficient run off. They were able to
retrofit the roof with Standing Seam 360 panels because the existing roof
had “R” type panels.
“The new roof brings a vibrant display of our school colors to a longstanding campus establishment. The Hawks Nest, where our students
have gathered for recreation for decades, and now for decades to come,
was in need of a facelift to restore it to its previous glory,” said Dr. M.
Christopher White, president of Chowan University.

VERCO DECKING INTRODUCES
Verco Decking, Inc., a leading innovator in the steel decking industry,
recently introduced the PunchLok® II System. The PunchLok® II System
is the next generation of the proprietary sidelap connection system that
revolutionized the steel deck industry. The more powerful PunchLok®
II Tool creates a stronger connection (the VSC2) than the original (VSC)
with all of the same benefits and labor savings of the original PunchLok®
System.
The Standing Seam 360 panels float on a system
of sliding clips that prevent damage from
thermal expansion and contraction. Standing
seam designs also eliminate 80 percent of the
through fasteners found in other systems for
greater weather tightness making the building
more energy efficient.
The roofing panels used were coated with
AMS’s CoolScape® paint which is designed to
reflect solar rays more effectively and reduce
the amount of heat that is absorbed into the
respective building. Even though a dark blue
color was chosen for the panels the “cool”
metal roof is coated with PVDF (Polyvinylidene
Flouride) and can reduce energy consumption
by up to 40 percent as part of a total system
design.
“In just a month and a half, the completed
roof met and exceeded the university’s
expectations, said
Ken Daly, AMS Sales
Manager. “The university received a durable
and energy efficient roofing system, allowing
the facility to be used again as a student
activities center.”
“Now, Chowan can proudly promote this
building in marketing materials, admissions
pieces and alumni magazines, as well as during
our televised football games which will show
the brilliant, new blue roof in the background,”
commented President White.
The PunchLok® II Tool is manufactured by Verco Decking, Inc., a Nucor
Company, exclusively for use with Verco’s PLBTM-36, PLN3TM and
PLNTM-24 roof decks and all related
cellular roof deck profiles, and PLBTM,
PLN3TM, PLNTM, PLW2TM and
PLW3TM FORMLOKTM composite
decks and all related cellular floor deck
profiles. The PunchLok® II System will
also soon be available for Vulcraft’s
interlocking deck profiles.
Advantages of the PunchLok II System
include:
• 100 percent effective from the first
attachment of the day to the last
attachment of the day
• 100 percent accuracy of inspection
of the attachment from the top
side of the deck
• Stronger, more effective and more
economical than both button
punches and screwed sidelaps
• Requires no touch-up from either
the top side or bottom side of the

Weldon Steel, a Vulcraft customer, improved safety
and reduced construction liability with Ecospan by
using full sheets of light-gauge decking. Installation
was efficient and inexpensive by attaching deck to
joists with the Shearflex® Screw and Shearset® Tool in a
single step. No plywood forms or shoring is necessary
with Ecospan, saving time and costly handling. Plus,
Hourigan Construction and their subcontractors
were able to begin work the day after the concrete
was poured.
Hourigan Construction and the engineers at Daniels
and Associates worked closely with Ecospan during
the detailing process, helping to ensure a great
degree of accuracy. The use of the green flooring
system saved approximately $50,000, while offering
the benefits of sustainable building materials that

PRODUCT FEATURE
NUCOR BUILDING SYSTEMS
TRUSSFRAME BUILDS MOMENTUM
Nucor Building Systems recently introduced Nucor
TrussFrame, a significant new product within the
construction market. This hybrid framing system is
comprised of open web rafters - combining the stability
of a rigid frame with the versatility and architectural
aesthetic of open web trusses. The result is a highly
flexible system that allows for much larger clearspans
than typically achieved with a solid web system. Nucor
TrussFrame allows for unobstructed, column-free
interior space in excess of 250 feet wide.
With the ability to withstand heavy roof loading
conditions, it is an extremely efficient and economical
system ideal for large clearspan building applications.
Unlike solid web framing systems, TrussFrame can
incorporate HVAC systems, electrical wiring, and
sprinkler systems into the open trusses. This feature can
reduce the required building height, allow for greater
dispersal of light, and increase overall cost efficiency.
The product is a collaboration with Vulcraft and
capitalizes on their truss fabrication expertise.
14 NUCOR STEEL PRODUCTS NEWS
Upon its launch last year, Nucor Building Systems
immediately sold its first TrussFrame project to Box
Elder County in Trementon, Utah. Planning a new horse
riding arena to be located at the community fairgrounds,
Box Elder County wanted a high-performance riding
arena that was flexible, easy to maintain, well-lit, costeffective and long lasting. It also had a tight schedule in
order for the facility to be completed in time to host the
upcoming annual fair.
Given the inherent requirements of a riding arena, the
County wanted a large building with open interior
space free from interior column obstructions, as well as
a high overhead clearance that would not interfere or
obstruct events.
Nucor Building System’s new TrussFrame open web
product was selected as the optimal design solution
for this 175 ft x 240 ft project for several reasons.
These included providing a large column-free space
and a bright, well-lit interior that, combined with
translucent panels along the perimeter of the structure,
helped reduce lighting and energy costs. In addition,
The open web rafters provide an open aesthetic and allow for increased dispersal
of light throughout the interior of this horse riding arena in Trementon, Utah.
Currently under construction, this 315 ft wide TrussFrame structure will be
used as an aviation facility in Jacksonville, Florida.
incorporating lighting and wiring between the open trusses
allowed for a cost-saving reduction in building height.
The erector for the project, J&M Steel Solutions, was very well
prepared and informed and reports that the job was extremely
smooth from start to finish.
The erector built the TrussFrame sections on the ground, which
helped from a safety standpoint for the crews, by allowing
them to have less time in the air. The other benefit was saving
assembly time. The TrussFrame sections were lifted, bolted
together and filled in within two days. This reduced the erection
time by 25% of the initial schedule and helped reach the
expected completion date of the building.
The project proved that using Nucor TrussFrame can provide
an extremely efficient and economical solution for owners—in
addition to delivering superior functionality and versatility.
A second TrussFrame project is currently under construction in
Jacksonville, Florida with three additional projects currently in
fabrication at several Nucor Building Systems divisions.

KIRBY BUILDING
SYSTEMS USES
ROBOTIC WELDERS
CBC MANUFACTURES
HANGAR TO HOUSE
WORLD’S LARGEST
AIRCRAFT
Utilizing steel products produced at Nucor Hickman, Nucor
Plymouth Utah, Nucor Yamato, and Standing Seam materials
from American Buildings Company West; CBC successfully
manufactured a 2,200-ton hangar and manufacturing
facility that will be used to produce the world’s largest
aircraft for a new aerospace project called Stratolaunch
Systems. Paul Allen, the co-founder of Microsoft and an
aerospace enthusiast, has supported Stratolaunch Systems as
a startup venture. Burt Rutan, a legend in the aviation field,
designed the twin-fuselage plane that will serve as the airlaunch carrier for multi-stage rockets on commercial aerospace
missions.
The hangar is configured as an inverted-T footprint with the
148’ x 462’ dimension on the larger entry side established by
the aircraft’s 385’ wingspan, the world’s largest. An adjoining,
135’ x 212’ extension at one side accommodates the tail of the
twin-bodied aircraft when parked inside the hangar.
CBC builder Wallace & Smith General Contractors based in
Bakersfield, California earned the project contract. They
completed the 103,256-sq.-ft hangar earlier in 2013 in addition
to the neighboring 88,000-sq.-ft. manufacturing and assembly
facility.
CBC successfully met their customer’s needs throughout the
design development, fabrication, delivery, and erection of this
project, due to the coordinated efforts of the entire CBC Team,
but most of all because of our absolute commitment of “Being
Safe and Taking Care of Our Customers.”
16 NUCOR STEEL PRODUCTS NEWS
Kirby Building Systems (KBS) recently added
two Motoman 5 Axis robots with Miller Robotics
Welders and Yasnak Controllers to their
structural department. The robotic welders were
recommended by a KBS Builder but he was not sure
how they could be utilized. The production team
determined that the robots could be used to increase
efficiency and eventually reduce costs.
The team determined that they could make the
anti-roll brackets which secure the purlins to the
mainframe of a building. One of the robots was
modified by removing the welder and adding a
plasma to utilize scrap drop from the 20 foot shear.
The other robot was left intact to weld the brackets
together.
Quality and consistency are the main focus for the
KBS engineering team who specified that the welds
withstand psi forces up to 5,000 pounds. When
tested, the metal tore at 10,000 pounds but the welds
remained intact.
Six identical brackets can be made in 10 minutes or
less depending on how quickly a person can load
the material into the jigs. When the brackets were
made by hand, it takes approximately six minutes per
bracket.
Within the first year the robots paid for themselves,
by allowing KBS to use scrap, eliminate quality issues,
and reducing the overall costs of bracket production.
KBS has plans to utilize several more of the same
robots in the near future which they already have
purchased.
HARRIS REBAR COMPLETES
BB&T BALLPARK
The Charlotte Knights state-of-the-art Minor League Ballpark located in the heart of Charlotte, N.C. has been completed. With
a seating capacity of 10,000 and a natural grass field, it hosts baseball games and other events such as concerts, festivals and
community gatherings.
An integral part of the project, Harris Rebar used a concrete model to detail 100 percent of the project’s reinforcement
using Tekla Structures. This led to a level of coordination that was unheard of in traditional rebar detailing. The utilization of
3D rebar detailing with Tekla Structures resulted in fewer detailing errors and an all-around more efficient rebar workflow. The
rebar model was able to track rebar onsite, review area of complexity and manage changes to design.
The concrete scope included heavy basement foundations, tunnels, retaining walls, shared slabs and architectural concrete
in the seating bowl. The Tekla BIMsight process was a major contributor to this project’s success and will continue to be used
in future projects.
This project won Tekla’s top BIM design award for the best Cast in Place Concrete project of 2013. Harris Rebar used Tekla BIM
models for detailing, planning pours, tracking progress and coordinating with other trades, which lead to fewer errors and a
more efficient workflow.
