New Decade Brings Exciting Start for VADA/Nova!
Since one can never have too much of a good thing,
I am returning to be President of VADA/Nova this year,
after a "break" of many years serving as Treasurer. I am
pleased to be working with this great group of Board members and volunteers and to share with you some of the
exciting things we have planned for 2010. I hope you all
will include in your New Year's resolutions to attend more
of our VADA/Nova events, whether as a rider, coach,
volunteer or spectator.
Schooling shows: We have our usual compliment
of shows and are pleased to once again to participate in the
VADA/Nova/CDCTA Challenge show at Compass Rose
Farm, this year hosted by CDCTA. If you have never
attended this show, put it on your calendar. It is a unique
and very fun (and funny) experience. Also consider
qualifying for the VADA/Nova Championship Schooling
Show in November at Morven Park. This show features
great competition at our top facility, and lots of ribbons and
prizes.
Licensed shows: We are hosting three licensed
Dressage shows and two one-day Breed shows at Morven
Park this year. The exciting news is that, as a result of
some changes in the show scene, VADA/Nova has been
asked by USEF to host the "2010 Markel/USEF Young
Horse Dressage Eastern Selection Trial for the 2010 FEI
World Breeding Championships for Young Horses in
Dressage" (Whew!). This Selection Trial is one of three in
the US which enables the USEF to select those horses that
will represent the United States at the FEI World Breeding
Championships in Europe this year. It is quite an honor and

responsibility for VADA/Nova to have been selected
to run this show, and shows that our reputation for
great show management is becoming well known. I
hope everyone will support our efforts to make this a
great show that highlights for all to see VADA/Nova's
skills and great volunteers! And as a bonus, you will
be able to see some of the top up-and-coming young
horses compete in our back yard or, if you prefer,
compete in front of our panel of three FEI judges and
two S judges.
Clinics: This year, we are beginning an
organized program of educational clinics that we hope
we can continue into the future. The year will begin at
the end of April with a "Three-in-One" clinic composed of a riding clinic, fix-a-test and volunteer training session for scribes and scorers. In mid-summer,
we hope to have a fun and educational clinic on "Sport
Horse Versatility Training", an up and coming new
concept for the dressage world. And finally, we hope
to end the year with a rider-oriented, auditor-friendly
riding clinic. Stay tuned for more details as we firm up
plans for these clinics.
The Youth Team Show: VADA/Nova is
pleased to again be hosting the Region 1/USDF Youth
Team Competition. This year marks the 20th Anniversary for this unique Region 1 show and we hope to
celebrate that accomplishment with some great additions to the show. Again stay tuned for more details.
Now, let's get this winter weather over with and get on
with our riding!

PRELIMINARY SUMMARY MINUTES –
VADA/Nova Board Meeting
Jan. 11, 2010 -Morven Park Lounge – 7:30 PM
Licensed Shows: We now have all the officials for all our
shows – all contracts have been sent out and almost all are
back. We also now have signed contracts for all the Morven
Park shows, including schooling shows.
The meeting was called to order at 7:35 PM and
lasted until 10PM. Twelve of the 13 Board members were
present. One was excused. There was one guest.
VADA plans a conference call of VADA representatives on
Wednesday January 13 at 8 PM. (minutes in this issue)
The Preliminary Summary of the Minutes for the December 14,
2009 meeting needs to be corrected to show that Alison is now
on the USEF Dressage Committee, not the USDF Dressage
Committee.
Insurance: We reviewed our policy that clinicians we hire
must have their own liability insurance. Our regular policy is
$1 million. We will renew this policy and we voted that we
also renew the umbrella/supplemental policy we hold.
Treasurer’s Report: The balance of our regular account,
reconciled as of December 31, 2009, is $31,245.97. This will
go way down, as funds need to be spent for our pages in the
Omnibus, the publication of the Green Books, and so forth.
We basically broke even on the November licensed show, with
a positive cash flow of $948.10. There will be no 2010
November show due to the scheduling of the dressage
competition segment of the World Equestrian Games in
Lexington, KY September 27-October 1, and the Region One
Finals November 11-14 in Williamston, NC. We need to
decide what to do with the November show in 2011. Having a
smaller show in a different locale is one possibility.
The next meeting is February 8, 2010 at 7:30 PM.
Banquet: We reviewed plans for the Banquet. It was reported
that 90 people had signed up as of January 11. We discussed
what to do in the event of bad weather. The club where we are
holding the banquet had never closed because of weather prior
to the serious snow of December 19-20, 2009. If it is necessary
to postpone, we will get the information out to those who plan
to attend.
Committees: We reviewed the list of existing committees,
established chairs, noted functions, assigned additional
members to some, and consolidated some of the committees to
streamline things.
Membership: We have 256 members as of January 11, 2010 –
which is about the same as last year this time.
Clinics and Education: A general proposal for clinics which
would be held during 2010 was made. (1) The first would be
held in the spring, with a judge who is both a teacher and a
trainer as clinician. This would be a two day clinic with riding
the first day and a fix a test the second day. The fix a test
would be combined with volunteer training for scribes and
scorers. It would be kept reasonably priced. (2) The second
would be trail classes for dressage horses (Sport Horse
Versatility) held in the summer with Linda Hoover as the
clinician. There would be three groups, with four to five in
each group. The clinic would be held over two days and cost
$300.00 per participant. (3) The third would be a “straight up”
riding clinic held in the fall. It was moved, seconded and
passed that we accept the proposals for the spring and summer
clinics. The fall clinic to be voted upon when more fully
developed.
Respectfully submitted,
Nancy Stover

Don’t get confused!
There are lots of schooling shows out there,
but only these are VADA/Nova Schooling Shows.
For year-end VADA/Nova Schooling Show Awards,
2 of your scores must be from these shows or the
VADA/Nova vs. CDCTA Challenge Show on Oct 2 at Compass Rose.
To qualify for the Championship Schooling Show Classes on Nov 6,
you must earn your score at a VADA/Nova Schooling Show.
Don’t forget!
There are other schooling shows at these locations but they
are not VADA/Nova Schooling Shows.
Member of the Month
You may think you know our current Member of the Month.
But just how well do you know Candy Allen?
The Candy we all know is a Grand Prix rider and USDF Instructor thru 4th level . She lives in Catharpin with
her super supportive husband Larry and three horses, Tervet, White Bacardi, and Jonny. Candy has lived in Virginia
since 1986, when she moved here from England. Here are some things you may not know.......Candy's childhood was
spent living in many different countries as her father worked for an oil company. Her mother was always into horses and
dressage wherever they lived. She would sit baby Candy
on a horse's back after lessons. Candy participated in
Pony Club until age 12, then got into show jumping in
Holland where she competed seriously before moving
into and competing in dressage. When she moved to
England for college, she got into eventing and competed
thru Intermediate level.
After she moved to Virginia, she didn't do a lot of
showing, but did get to fox hunt a lot. I would say that
this well rounded equestrian lives her motto: that dressage
is the foundation of any good training.
Candy has been a member of VADA/Nova for 15
years. As for volunteering, she likes to do anything but
scribe or score. Most of the time , you will see her when
you check in at a show, as she is the one who put all of
those labels on your test sheets! When she has the time,
her other interests include Scuba diving, traveling and reading.
Candy and White Bacardi

VADA Teleconference Board Meeting Highlights
January 13, 2010
Board Members Present on the call: Dr. Angela Stanaway- NEVADA, Lea Ann Hansen- Central, Alison Douglas-Central,
Catherine Kern-Charlottesville, Tina Longaker-Charlottesville, Jessie Ginsburg-NOVA, Sheli King-NOVA,
Alison Head-NOVA, Judith Harroun-Lord-ShenVADA, Jane Palmer- ShenVADA, Tracey Smith-Oliver-SWAVDA,
Janet Brown-SWAVDA, Beth Rippel-SVDA, Robyn Nunnally-SVDA, Sandy Johnson-SVDA, Anne Draine-NEVADA
General Member:Dianne Boyd-NOVA
Minutes from the last meeting are unavailable due to a computer. Alison Douglas will try to re-create them from a recording.
Treasurer’s Report- Jessie Ginsburg reported $121,147.36 total cash in our accounts. She thinks we made around thirty thousand
less ribbons on the GAIG show. Tina thinks it should be closer to fifty thousand and they will reconcile among themselves.
Membership Report- Beth Rippel reported that we have 223 memberships in to USDF and another 103 that she has received but
hasn’t forwarded on yet. She had not received anything from Fredericksburg, Central and NEVADA chapters. It was noted that
we need to look at our by-laws and make sure that the membership years are consistent between the chapters and USDF,
i.e. December thru November. Beth reported that she had received communication from USDF that our membership was late and
we were subject to a fine, but they accepted the membership list and we have not been fined as of yet.
GAIG Wrap Up- Any outstanding bills need to be turned into Jessie. She and Tina will reconcile to make sure that all income and
expenses are accounted for in determining the profit for the event.
2010 Activities- We will host the BLM show in October and the Adult Team with Charlottesville in September in Culpeper.
Tina would like someone to do a write up on the Adult Team for the USDF Connection as it is being run in conjunction with the
Charlottesville Twin Shows, kind of a novel idea, Alison Douglas volunteered. The awards ceremony for the Adult Team will
only be on Sunday. VADA will have to determine a method of helping sponsor the chapter teams within the USDF rules, which
would not permit us to pay a portion of the entry fees directly as the Adult Team is part of a licensed competition.
Website- It was decided that VADA events calendar on the website should include only VADA events, and clinics sponsored by
chapters. Other events, such as clinics hosted by a farm, would need to submit a paid classified ad and be listed under the advertising link. There was also discussion about having a web developer as a VADA position next year. There might be a possibility
of generating revenue by selling ad space or links for vendors. The Board will need to consider how much to charge and how
these ads or links will be promoted on the website.
2010 Chapter Officers & Volunteer of the Year- Tina only has the Chapter Volunteers for the year for Central and NOVA, she
needs the rest. Chapters also need to submit their new officers and info for the website and the Purple Book. There were no
nominations for the Shel Gafford Award this year.
2011 Clinic- There was some discussion about having a clinic in February, March or April and using the East Complex at the
Lexington facility vs. Morven Park. Nothing was definitively planned.
2011 Championships: The Board agreed that VADA should apply to host either the 2011 GAIGs or BLMs, with a preference for
the GAIGs. USDF Region 1 will meet in the spring to decide, as there are multiple bids from different GMOs for the GAIGs.
Dianne Boyd reported to the Board that the Horse Center has three capital projects that they are looking to have funded this year:
replace lighting, repair the footing in the stalls, and repair the roads. The discussion among the board leaned towards buying new
rings and donating them with the understanding that we would not have to pay rental fees for using them for five years. Dianne
suggested that VADA consider making a substantial donation to the Horse Center to support these capital improvements. While
VADA pays a great deal to rent the facility for the fall show, that amount does not cover these ongoing needs for upgrade and
maintenance. She also reported that the NCDCTA headsets we have been borrowing for the judges’ commentary at the fall
show are getting old, and recommended that VADA purchase new headsets, between 20 and 25 of them. Beth Rippel volunteered to source and price them and report back to the board. The Board agreed to consider how much to donate to the Horse
Center after determining whether VADA’s bids to hold one of the regional championships in 2011 is approved by Region 1.
Alison Douglas reported that Central Chapter is urging their members to donate used horse and human riding equipment while
doing spring cleaning this year to a worthy non-profit. The club will collect and disseminate. She noted that this might be something that other clubs do for non-profits in their local areas.
Meeting was adjourned at 9:30 pm.
Respectfully submitted,
Alison Douglas
