Teens told: ‘Live your dreams’
By Ryan Winslett
Times Reporter
The Fountain Hills Coalition hosted a lunchtime
speaker event out of the
high school lecture hall on
Thursday, March 26, with
21-year-old musician Seth
Loveless sharing his story
and love for music with
those in attendance.
Loveless’ message to
FHHS students was a simple one: Live your dreams.
The coalition is implementing various strategies
in the community to reduce
drug use and underage
drinking among teens.
Growing up in Buckeye,
Loveless said his life took
a tricky turn when, at
the age of five, his father
started using drugs.
The substance abuse
led to a divorce, but that
wasn’t the end of Loveless’
heartache. Later in life,
his stepfather committed
suicide. Along the way, he
was also diagnosed with
Asperger’s.
Rather than allow those
moments to take control of
his life, though, he found
something to become passionate about.
“I loved music from an
early age,” Loveless explained to the local students and community
members in the audience.
“When I was a kid, I
wanted to be Steven Tyler
from Aerosmith.”
At the age of 12, Loveless’ grandpa became his
first teacher and, at 13, he
received his first guitar for
his birthday.
“In high school, I was the
kid who carried his guitar
around school and I didn’t
talk much,” Loveless continued.
“Some of my friends got
into partying; even meth.
I had a friend who could
draw really well. He can’t
do that anymore, after
what the meth did to him.”
Loveless said that playing the guitar became his
way of expressing himself.
Rather than get lost in the
various troubles that came
his way, he got lost in playing his instrument.
As a musical interlude,
Loveless played the first
song he ever learned on
guitar, Johnny Cash’s “Folsom Prison Blues.”
“I’m a lot better at playing that than I am talking,”
Loveless said, getting a
laugh from the crowd.
Just coming off the road
from playing at South by
Southwest, Loveless said
that he followed his own
passion and, eventually,
it led to his being “discovered.” Shortly after that he
recorded his first album.
On his website at sethloveless.com, Loveless explains the purposes of his
music.
“One is to help encourage escape from internal,
external and self-imposed
confinements affecting our
lives,” he writes on the site.
“The other is to bring
attention and momentum
to the cause of defeating
homelessness.”
Loveless told the Fountain Hills crowd that many
of the homeless suffer from
mental, emotional and substance abuse issues; areas
that have had an impact on
his own life.
When “That
will never
happen
to me”
happens.
Singer/songwriter Seth Loveless visited FHHS as part
of the Fountain Hills Coalition speaker series targeted
at sharing positive, uplifting messages.
As such, a portion of
the proceeds from his album sales go to various
organizations that combat
homelessness.
As for his own goals,
Loveless said he would like
to play in front of thousands and thousands of
people and just keep on
making music.
“You have to be true to
yourself,” he said.
“If you follow what
you’re passionate about,
you never know where it
will lead you.”
Coalition Director
Shelly Mowrey said she
was pleased with Loveless’
presentation.
“His presentation was
raw, honest and from the
heart,” she said afterward.
“He brought levity when it was needed
and strummed his guitar
throughout the course of
the presentation.
“The high school students were fantastic and
stayed after to ask questions and talk with him one
on one.”
