Homecoming 2012 - Nov. 9-11
Brothers, plan on attending Homecoming weekend that will
include the induction of six Beta Phis into the Hall of Honor.
Get together with longtime friends in a fun-filled weekend at the
Westin La Paloma Resort in Tucson.
The Hall of Honor activity will be from 4:30 - 6:30 p.m. Friday
followed by group pictures, cocktails and a special celebration
dinner.
New House Fundraising
The Major Gift Campaign that began in September has resulted
in slow but steady progress as $800,000 of new pledges have
been realized over the past six months. The Major Gift Phase of
the campaign is expected to be concluded over the next 30 days
with the anticipation that $1,050,000 in new pledges will have
been realized from our Major Gift funding efforts. The Campaign
Steering Committee will be meeting in early June to finalize the
fundraising strategy for the third quarter, which will be the final
phase of the new house capital campaign. The Beta Phi Building
Corporation board has approved additional architectural plan
expenditures and preliminary discussions with several contractors
will be pursued this summer. In addition, conversations with
several Tucson banks regarding the availability and cost of
construction financing have been undertaken.
The nominees for the Hall of Honor induction ceremonies are:

On Saturday, attend the annual homecoming parade and a
barbecue lunch at the Sigma Chi house. Then watch the Wildcats
and the Colorado football game at a time to be announced. The
Cats will be trying to avenge last year’s loss to the Buffaloes.
Rooms at the lovely La Paloma resort are $169 a night – a real
bargain. That includes free parking, golf discounts, lovely pool
facilities, and a beautiful environment. Make your Sigma Chi
reunion reservations at the resort’s website.
www.westinlapalomaresort.com or by calling (520) 742-6000 or
(800) 937-8461.
In order to achieve our overall capital campaign funding goal of
$3.5 million the final phase of the capital campaign will need to
involve the funding of $850,000 of new pledges and donations
over the next five months. As part of the campaign strategy
discussions the Campaign Steering and Major Gift Committees
will be reviewing the use of a matching gift program and a
room gifting strategy in order to meet these goals. Our overall
fundraising objective will be to conclude the New House Capital
Campaign in early October before the Homecoming celebration.
We want to extend a thank you to all of the current campaign
donors for their donations and patience. Moreover, we are very
appreciative of those Brothers that have been directly involved
with the capital campaign leadership efforts. The Beta Phi
undergraduate performance has been impressive. Being the No. 1
ranked fraternity on the University of Arizona campus for the past
three years has not been an easy task. Clearly, the undergraduates
are deserving of our support and the importance of building a new
Sigma Chi Fraternity house in order for the Beta Phi Chapter to
retain its campus leadership position cannot be overemphasized.

Consul’s Report - Hunter Curtis
As the school year comes to an end we can look back at the
success of the Beta Phi chapter. With our great alumni support,
outstanding school relations, and quality undergraduate members
great things are in our near future.
We recently initiated 12 new members putting our active
membership to 117. This past year we won the Dean Robert Svob
award for the third year in a row. This award is given to the top
fraternity on campus. Along with the Svob award we were awarded
for the highest active GPA for the fall 2011, Robin Winters was
given the Chapter Advisor of the Year award, former Consul Jon Eastman received
the Chapter President of the Year award, and Beta Phi was named the Outstanding
Program of the Year for its first Beta Phi Leadership conference.
Our members are involved in many different areas at the university. We have four
brothers in Chain Gang, a junior honorary, along with 10 brothers in Chimes, another
junior honorary. Kevin Elliott served as an ASUA Senator for the year and recently,
Jake Barman and Taylor Ashton were elected for the next year. In addition, Jackson
Welch served as the president of the Mortar Board senior honorary and Kevin Cayton
was a member of the Bobcats senior honorary. For the next year, Brothers Matt
McLennan and I were selected to be Bobcats as well. We recently have two members
selected as Ambassadors for the upcoming year, bringing the total number of brothers
in this honorary up to seven.
This year we have been involved in many sorority philanthropies along with school
sponsored events including, Up til Dawn and Catwalk. This spring we also hosted our
third Derby Days orchestrated by Camron Vizcaino. We were able to raise more than
$21,000 for the Diamond Children’s Center and the Steele Research Center. This
summer, we are honored to send two brothers, Kevin Murney and Aaron Whitelock
to Horizons, a week-long leadership program which is exclusive to Sigma Chi. This
program has been requested by many fortune 500 companies for their own employees.
The past year we have had 30 members in the mentorship program headed by
alumni Terry Valeski and me. The program has continued to prove successful for our
graduating seniors by helping them network and gain experience in the professional
world. This year at the second annual Beta Phi Leadership Conference we will be
having an alumni lunch. This is an amazing opportunity to get to meet and know the
undergraduates as well as share insight to help them in the real world. Invitations will
be sent out this summer and we look forward to having another successful conference.
On behalf of the Beta Phi chapter, I would like to thank our alumni for their support
and contributions to our chapter. We look forward to another successful year.
(Editor’s note: Brother Curtis neglected to note that he also was selected as the UA’s Greek Man of the Year.)

Bill Scott
Bill Scott, Arizona ’80, is moving to the

Successful Chapter Initiation Ceremony, New Officer Elections
and Annual Derby Days
Twelve Beta Phi spring pledges were initiated into the Sigma Chi
Fraternity in April. A number of parents traveled to Tucson in
order to participate in the activities. In the last week of April, the
annual Beta Phi Derby Day weekend was successfully undertaken
as over 400 participants from the 11 sororities competed in the
various Derby Day events. Camron Vizcaino, the Derby Day
manager indicated that the philanthropic monies raised from the
event exceeded $21,000 and that these funds would be presented
to the Diamond Children’s Medical Center and Steele Research
Center in Tucson. In May the annual Chapter officer election was
completed and Hunter Curtis and Buddy Cheek were elected as
the new Consul and Pro Consul. Kevin Elliott and Brandon Roth
were elected as Annotator and Magister. The Beta Phi membership
totaled118 members in the spring.
Successful Mentoring Program Concluded for Seniors
Former Dean of Students and Beta Phi Sig Bob Svob holds the
trophy in his name with a group of the 2012 graduating seniors
As many of you are aware, the Tucson Sigma Chi Alumni Chapter
has an active mentoring program for Beta Phi undergraduate
juniors and seniors. Each of the participants in the program is
assigned an alumni mentor and encouraged to participate in the
mentoring program events during the school year. Career strategy
discussions, resume composition activities and mock interview
instruction are included in the program. The undergraduates are
encouraged to participate in summer internship programs and to
actively work with Sigma Chi alumni in pursuing these activities.
Excellent Academic Performance and Winner
of the Top UA Fraternity in 2012
The Beta Phi Chapter of Sigma Chi finished No.1 in grade point
average (3.07) for all of the Interfraternity Council fraternities
in the spring term. “We are very proud of our academic
accomplishments,” said outgoing Beta Phi Consul Jon Eastman.
“We have been recipients of the annual Svob Award (No.1 ranked
fraternity on campus) for the past three years.”
Schuyler also offered his congratulations to the scholarship
chairman and to undergraduates for their continued academic
excellence. In addition, for the past several years, the chapter has
been awarded with the prestigious Peterson Significant Chapter
award, which is the highest honor given by the International
Fraternity. Moreover, newly elected Consul Hunter Curtis was
named Greek Man of Year and former Consul Jon Eastman was
the recipient of the Interfraternity Consul President of the year
award at the Greek Awards ceremony in April. Beta Phi Matt
McLennan, the president of the Order of the Omega, hosted the
ceremony.

New Fraternity House Capital Campaign Status
A number of parents of the undergraduates have requested
information on the construction schedule of the new fraternity
house and have now made donations to the capital campaign. We
very much appreciate their participation as donors in the New
House Capital Campaign and at this stage we anticipate that the
capital campaign will be completed this fall. We are hopeful to
start construction of the new fraternity house in the spring of
2013 and to have the house ready for occupancy in the fall of
2014.
50 Take Part in Hall of Honor Luncheon
From left, Dennis Harmon, Lisle Payne, Luke Helms, Chuck Colton,
UA athletic director Greg Byrne, Hunter Curtis, Jack McDuff, Terry
Valeski and Paul Muscenti
More than 50 Beta Phi Brothers attended the Hall of Honor luncheon on April 17 to hear UA athletic director Greg Byrne talk about
the future of Wildcat sports at the La Hermosa Inn in Scottsdale. Byrne stressed the university’s commitment to being the best athletic
department in the state.
Attendees ranged from those who graduated in the 1940s to the 2000s, including former Grand Consul Jack McDuff.
New Beta Phi Consul Hunter Curtis and four other undergraduates also attended the luncheon. Curtis gave a round-down of the great
success the chapter had this year, including the best chapter, best chapter president (Jon Eastman), the best chapter advisor (Robin
Winters) and best grade point average.
The gathering is one of two Hall of Honor luncheons to be held each year in the Phoenix area.
Chapter Eternal
William E. “Bill” Kimble, Beta Phi ’51,
a longtime Tucson attorney and former
partner with Earl Carroll, a member of
the Beta Phi Hall of Honor, entered the
Chapter Eternal on April 6, 2012 at his
home. He was 85.
Kimble was a graduate of Tucson High
School, served in the U.S. Navy from
1944-46 and returned to Tucson to earn his law degree from the
UA. After graduation he spent a short period with the FBI before
opening a law practice in Bisbee. He served as a Cochise County
Superior Court judge until 1962.
In 1964 he ran as a Republican against freshman Democratic
congressman Morris K. Udall, but lost the race. Later he and
Udall, also a Beta Phi, became fast friends. Kimble served as the
co-chair for Udall’s re-election campaign in 1982. He retired in
1991 after a career that saw he try more than 500 jury cases. He
also taught at the UA law school for more than 20 years.
He and his wife, Jean, who survives him, were parents of seven
boys. All honor to his name.
On April 3, 2012 Brian Charles Garrison
(Beta Phi 99) entered the Chapter Eternal.
In 1996 Brian enlisted in the US Marines,
where he was stationed at Camp Pendleton,
serving in Company A, First Battalion, Fifth
Marine Regiment. He received the Navy
and Marine Corps Achievement Medal and
Meritorious Mast for superior performance
of duty while serving as a small boat coxswain.
Following his military service, his interests led him to the audio/
visual and electronics/computer technology field. At the time of
his death, Brian was employed by CCS Presentation Systems,
where he was head installer in the Tucson area.
Brian is survived by his mother and father, Carol B. and C. Scott
Garrison; brother, Richard B. Garrison (Beta Phi 93) and sister,
Amanda B. Garrison. He is preceded in entering the Chapter
Eternal by his grandfather, Richard B. Bennett (Alpha Lambda
49), great grandfather Richard Heber Bennett Jr. (Emory, 1920)
and great great grandfather Richard Heber Bennett (RandolphMacon College 1883). All honor to his name.
