Contributions NEWS FROM THE WINDSOR REGIONAL HOSPITAL FOUNDATION Volume 17, Number 1 - December 2011 • www.wrhfoundation.ca Join “Friends of Windsor Regional Hospital” on Facebook Holiday Greetings To you and your family, Seasons Greetings and good health and wellness in the New Year. Our Valued Contributors We are pleased and thankful to all who responded to the last edition of Contributions newsletter. An active number of medical needs on the appeal list was met through your generosity and caring response. Because of that, patient care is enhanced at both the Met Campus and Tayfour Campus of Windsor Regional Hospital. The major capital Cornerstone of Caring Campaign is moving forward with positive results to see that the Western Redevelopment Project is completed on time and on budget. Recently, the newly built Toldo Neurobehavioral Institute (Mental Health Hospital) opened to patients transferred from London. Staff were both excited and pleased to be working in a modern setting to care for those challenged by various mental health issues. Construction on the Tower Building progresses well with completion scheduled this coming summer. The result will be an improved program for Regional Rehabilitation needs including physiotherapy on the unit floors and enhanced patient rooms for those afflicted by stroke, brain injury and other illnesses affecting their day-to-day lives. The Windsor Regional Hospital Foundation and its Board of Directors are committed to its mission of promoting awareness and fundraising on behalf of its community. Through philanthropy, they can see improvements to patient care every day at Windsor Regional Hospital. Thank you for caring! New Tayfour Campus Naming Inspiring As part of the Cornerstone of Caring Campaign for the Western Redevelopment Project, a generous benefactor has stepped forward with a $1M donation to enhance programs and services for Rehabilitation and Complex Continuing Care. Dr. Fouad Tayfour and The Tayfour Foundation supported the project because of wanting to give back to the community. Dr. Tayfour established his private practice in 1988 specializing in cataract and retina surgery. His first clinic was at the former Windsor Western Hospital Centre, now aptly named the Tayfour Campus. The project began in June 2009 in partnership with Bondfield Construction, Infrastructure Ontario and Windsor Regional Hospital to completely rebuild the property. What has emerged is a newly opened 65-bed mental health facility (now called the Toldo Neurobehavioral Institute - Mental Health Hospital and Outpatient Clinic). Under construction is the 60-bed Rehabilitation Program in the Tower Building and a 30,000 sq. ft. Healing Garden that will be dedicated on behalf of John Tregaskiss next summer. The Malden Park facility, which will eventually house 196 complex continuing care patients, will be renamed in the spring of 2012. Dr. Tayfour was the first Retinal Surgeon to practice in Windsor and Essex County. His legacy in eye care has established him as the areas leading Ophthalmology Surgeon, advocating a strong interest in the development of procedures and applications for new technologies to his clinical Ophthalmology practice. Dr. Fouad Tayfour and Family “The naming of the Tayfour Campus has inspired the staff,” said Sharon Pillon, Vice President, Rehabilitation and Continuing Care. “They feel a resurgence in this Campus that has a history going back to 1910.” OUR VISION: A fully engaged community supporting Windsor Regional Hospital New Toldo Long Term Mental Health Hospital Completed Firefighters To The Rescue Again! The new, long term 65-bed mental health hospital, under construction since June 2009 has been completed, dedicated and received its first patients in November. Windsor Regional Hospital was saved again by the International Association of Firefighters and the local Essex County Firefighters Burn Foundation when they presented a cheque for $62,200 toward a new highfrequency oscillatory ventilation system for Critical Care/ICU at the Met Campus. Through the generosity of The Toldo Foundation, the new building will be known as the Toldo Neurobehavioral Institute (Mental Health Hospital and Outpatient Clinic). The medical equipment was inspired by firefighter, Darrell Elwood when he required treatment in the ICU at Windsor Regional Hospital. His motivation spearheaded a funding initiative that included the Essex County Firefighters Burn Foundation, along with the International Association of Firefighters Motorcycle Group who held a Ride 4 Darrell in June of this year to help raise the funds. “Acquiring an Oscillatory Ventilation System is a great investment as it assists to save lives for both infants and adults who require care related to a lung injury or disease,” stated Cary Bedard, Nurse Practitioner in ICU. Ribbon cutting ceremony in front of the new Toldo Neurobehavioral Institute includes Wilf Innerd, Board Chair, WRH; Ted Farron, Chair, Cornerstone of Caring Campaign; Dwight Duncan, MPP, Windsor Tecumseh; Mrs. Josie Toldo; David Musyj, President & CEO, WRH and; Anthony G. Toldo, The Toldo Foundation. The two-storey, 75,000 square foot building cost $7 million to construct and is a state-of-the-art facility for patients requiring various levels of mental health care. Room design has made it safe for patients and staff with necessary amenities such as lifestyle rooms, pleasant garden surrounding and Atrium. The building is sectioned into three clinical units that provide for Mood and Anxiety Disorder, Psychosis, Dual Diagnosis and Psycho-geriatrics, as well as specialized assessment. A number of specialized outpatient and outreach programs are facilitated by Assertive Community Treatment (ACT) teams who liaise with other mental health community agencies on behalf of their patients. The high-frequency Oscillatory Ventilation System is used in neonates and adult patients to reduce lung injury. It is often used in patients who have refractory hypoxemia that cannot be corrected by normal mechanical ventilation such as patients in severe acute respiratory distress syndrome or acute lung injury and other oxygenation diffusion issues. “The staff are excited about the new program and facility,” stated Dr. Gina Bulcke, Director, Family Mental Health and Addiction Services for Windsor Regional Hospital. “They are a mix of current hospital employees, new hired staff and those who transferred from London’s St. Joseph’s Health Centre.” A Family Endowment Established In Memory Of A Son The Daniel Johnson Family established an endowment with Windsor Regional Hospital Foundation through the development of the Daniel William Johnson Memorial Fund. The purpose of the fund was to create an Excellence in Oncology Nursing Award to be perpetuated over years. Daniel William Johnson Jr. passed away from cancer in October 2010 at the age of 51. His wife Linda and parents, Daniel Sr. and Cherie Johnson of London, Ontario were deeply affected by the outstanding care received on behalf of their son through his illness at the hospital. They wanted to remember Daniel in a very significant 2 | Contributions • December 2011 way and established the Nursing Award and endowment to sustain the award. The first recipients to receive the Excellence in Oncology Nursing Award were Donna Langlois, RN and Sarah Benninger, RN, recognized for outstanding care of Daniel. “By establishing this $30,000 endowment and educational fund here at Windsor Regional Hospital in my son’s name, it will allow the hospital to provide annual training to all Oncology nurses in the future,” stated Daniel Johnson Sr. WRH Staff Make Us Staff of Windsor Regional Hospital have achieved another milestone in success, recently capturing both an Ontario Hospital Association (OHA) Leading Practice Award and the 2011 People’s Choice Innovation Award. The Leading Practice Award for ‘Polarizing MRI Wait Times’ was selected by a panel of experts through the OHA International HealthAchieve Conference and Exhibition held at the Toronto Metro Centre annually. The MRI wait time initiative, using LEAN methodologies, was able to reduce its MRI wait times from a high of 115 days to a low of 22 days while increasing exam volumes by 11%. “Through the efforts of a dedicated team, we were able to engage the MRI frontline staff and myself as Lead Radiologist to achieve standardization while ensuring maximum efficiency of our MRI Unit,” stated Dr. Dan Gill, Lead Radiologist at Windsor Regional Hospital. More uniquely, Windsor Regional Hospital had submitted 11 of its clinical practices to the OHA and was accepted in a field of only 56 selected from Ontario hospitals. Windsor Regional Hospital had been awarded several Leading Practices in recent years. Also, the hospital was requested by the Ministry of Health and Long Term Care to participate in the Ontario Hospital Association’s Annual Summit and MOHLTC’s Innovations Expo, a poster presentation on Leading Practices that show advancement and efficiencies in specific care models. The submission, ‘A Problem With Parts Was Part Of Our Problem’, is an initiative outlining the tracking, monitoring and quality improvement changes that were put into place to promote the reduction of irreplaceable specimen errors. The result was an overall 50% reduction in OR irreplaceable specimen error rates. “It was a team effort that included the Operating Room, Laboratory and Surgical Program with the aim to be fully transparent with disclosure of irreplaceable specimen errors and a proactive approach to ensure safe quality of care for all parts of the patient,” said Neelu Sehgal, Clinical Practice Manager of Day Surgery, PACU and Ambulatory. The Hon. Deb Matthews, Minister of Health & Long Term Care presented the People’s Choice Award to staff of Windsor Regional Hospital at the conclusion of the Summit Expo congratulating the hospital again for winning its third out of only four People’s Choice Awards presented to date. To New Heights…Climbing Mt. Kilimanjaro Five Windsorites, Trevor Booth, Dr. Julie Fraser, Anissa Noakes, Tammie Szabo-Fleming and Scott Stevens are planning to pursue a life-long dream of climbing Mt. Kilimanjaro, the fourth highest mountain in the world, located in Tanzania, Africa. As they prepare and train rigorously for their climb, planned for September of next year, they have decided to support Windsor Regional Hospital’s Rehabilitation Program. They have established a goal of $50,000 to be raised over the next year on behalf of the Cornerstone of Caring Campaign for the Western Redevelopment Project. “We liked the idea of rehabilitation equipment such as therapy step machines that assist stroke victims along with several other modalities,” said Anissa Noakes, one of the climbers. “With each step we take climbing up the mountain, it reflects the steps that patients take to rehabilitate.” Trevor Booth, Scott Stevens, Tammie Szabo-Fleming, Dr. Julie Fraser and Anissa Noakes, the team climbing Mt. The funds supported a bariatric chair lift and scale required for Complex Continuing Care at the Tayfour Campus. Due to heavier-weighted patients, bariatric medical equipment has become the norm for hospital operations. The Royal Canadian Legion, Ontario Chapter, along with local branches raise funds from various activities and donate those proceeds to hospitals across Ontario upon request and approval. “I think it is heartening that Legion veterans go above and beyond, having already given so much on behalf of their country,” stated Ron Foster, VP, Public Affairs, Communications and Philanthropy. “They’ve returned home from duty years ago yet continue to serve their community through their generosity and goodwill.” OUR MISSION: To promote public awareness and encourage philanthropy in support of Windsor Regional Hospital | 3 CURRENT NEEDS Thank you for your consideration to support Windsor Regional Hospital.
