RAFIH STYLE MAGAZINE 5 SPRING 2012 RAFIH STYLE PUBLISHER’S NOTE We’ve had a pretty remarkable winter this year thanks to abnormally mild temperatures and only a handful of heavy snowfalls. Yet, in true Canadian form, we anxiously wait for the first buds to bloom and last snowflakes to fall. As we head into spring, we honour our favourite living spaces in the annual Home Edition. That daunting word “renovation” – whether it refers to tearing out and restoring your kitchen or simply finding a new furniture piece – brings with it thoughts of stress and a seemingly never-ending task. However long your around-the-house “to do” list, help from the area’s best in interior and outdoor design proves that there is no better time than now to bring your ideas to life. Inside these pages find local selections for home design and restoration, and consider beautifying your home from the outside in while reading our feature editorial on Landscape Effects Group. We might not be quite ready to take the patio furniture out from storage, but spring is the perfect time to revamp the home and spend the upcoming months preparing in anticipation of hot weather. We can only hope that the early February showers mean summer is just around the corner. His usual indefatigable enthusiasm – so widely recognized by family, friends and work colleagues alike – has perhaps discernibly dropped from its normal level, thanks to him having spent the lion’s share of the previous night behind the wheel of one of Landscape Effects Group’s snow-plowing tractors, fighting one of this winter season’s rare snow events. Although such hands-on duty would not seem to befit the president of one of Southwestern Ontario’s most prosperous landscaping companies, St. Pierre wouldn’t have it any other way. “I love it,” he says, without hesitation. “One hundred percent, I want to be out there with our team.” Although this year’s mild winter saw Landscape Effects Group actively landscaping until Christmas, St. Pierre and his team have built a substantial winter arm of their business that keeps them busy through the colder months. “We have changed the culture, somewhat, of our business,” he says. “We are absolutely still a landscape design and construction company, but our winter operations have allowed us to also establish ourselves as a premier year-round grounds maintenance service provider as well.” Before long, St. Pierre’s affable and assertive presence springs to the fore, only occasionally competing for attention with the awardladen presentation room walls which hint at a long list of accolades Landscape Effects Group has earned over the past twenty years of making local homeowners’ backyard dreams come true. SPRING 2012 Conventional wisdom might dictate that one’s budget for a landscaping project has to correspond in some direct proportion to the surface area involved, meaning that the scope of a landscape design is limited by square footage. Quite to the contrary, St. Pierre and his team have lately been motivated by the challenge of bringing high-level, creative landscaping solutions to relatively confined spaces. Although capable of handling projects of virtually any size and scope, Landscape Effects Group prides itself on its ability to materially realize big ideas in small spaces, and welcomes the creative challenge presented by such unconventional opportunities. One particularly creatively challenging recent project charged St. Pierre and his team with the task of transforming a grey, 200-square-foot plot of unused land atop downtown Windsor’s Symbol Nightclub and Lounge into a useable, attractive space. Today, Symbol boasts an intimate rooftop patio that is tastefully exoticized by bamboo accents, unique to the city centre. “We love pushing the creative envelope,” says St. Pierre. “We are building things today that we never would have imagined ten or fifteen years ago. More and more so, these challenges are presented by discerning clients who want something different. We recognize that each client has a different personality, with needs and wants that are different.” While Landscape Effects Group identifies its ideal customer as one who gives St. Pierre’s team carte blanche to design and realize “low maintenance but spectacular” designs of their unique creation, he promises that “it’s certainly not our way or the highway.” Indeed, over the past decade, St. Pierre has noticed an emerging trend toward decisive, informed clients who, with each passing year, are increasingly more likely to say “I need” than “I’d like.” Traceable to influences as divergent as increased opportunities for travel outside of the Windsor-Essex area and travel or home-based reality television shows, this consumer trend lends credence to St. Pierre’s belief that people want to “enjoy their outside space more than ever.” The logically concomitant process of “bringing the inside out” often includes what might be called an elemental approach to landscaping and exterior design. In practical, tangible terms, St. Pierre understands that landscaping is the creative yet deliberate assortment and assembly of given materials, Importantly, though the layout of those materials is a function of creativity and imagination, and most importantly, impeccable planning. Toward that end, St. Pierre sees the company’s work as a tripartite enterprise (or “melding of ideas”) involving architecture, design, and landscaping. “Landscape Effects Group”, as its president diligently explains, is far from an accidental designation. Indeed, the final word of the company name is fundamentally descriptive. Adopting a measured, deferential tone, St. Pierre highlights the work done by a number of his current team members, the landscape professionals by whom the “Group” is comprised. “It takes an entire group of talented people in their own fields as artisans to pull (landscape projects) this off,” he says. “We are very fortunate to have a great team of creative and dedicated people who truly believe anything is possible when it comes to landscape design and construction.” Among these are two of the company’s longesttenured employees: senior designer Heather Horton, who has been with the company for fourteen years, and Installation Director Guy St. Pierre, Paul’s brother who has been with the company since practically day one. Along with operations manager Michele Auger and a highly-seasoned crew of landscape technicians, the various components of the Landscape Effects Group team work cohesively and contribute to each design-build job appropriately, expertly, and agreeably. “If four groups of landscapers are given the same material, the result will be four totally different looks,” he says. “Our team works much the same way but with an ability to reach consensus and achieve – with the absolute input of our clients – and exceed the vision our clients had when we first talk about what their backyards could look like.” Whatever the specific nature of the job, it is difficult to argue with Landscape Effects Group’s promise that their projects will add significant value to one’s home. “When landscaping is done right and well, it adds value to your home,” says St. Pierre. “It is as much an investment as the house itself.” On this day, St. Pierre’s hooded sweatshirt and running shoes betray the hands-on work ethic of a man somewhat reluctantly acquiescent to the realities of a president’s position that often keeps him off the job site. But St. Pierre is itching to get back, somewhat to his roots. “I love what I do and my days are filled with many job descriptions,” he explains, pointing to the dozen projects at various stages of completion that are currently occupying him and his team throughout the winter months, aside from all of their normal winter-related maintenance activities. “But I do want to get back out there in the field this year. As a landscaper, you never get tired of getting your hands dirty! To the very end of our interview, Paul St. Pierre fields questions adroitly, multitasking throughout without ever threatening to lose the room or his audience. Only to reflect on the Group’s greatest virtue in a crowded landscape marketplace does he pause momentarily. “Our ability,” he resumes, “to convey our ideas through many different media - be it drawings, sketches, or 3D animation - and not only bring these ideas forward, but actually build off of them so as to make things even better than what they are on paper during construction. I think that’s what makes us different. St. Pierre, content with his statement, his team, and the business, resettles in his chair. Seconds later, his eyes have lit up again: “I’m having a thought!” RAFIH STYLE MAGAZINE 11 Imagine downsizing…. to 30, 000 sq. ft.! Hurry in for Amica at Windsor’s Free Month limited time offer. RAFIH STYLE MAGAZINE 13 RAFIH STYLE living in luxury By Renée Carpenter, Jennings Furniture & Design RECLAIM YOUR Trends – an interesting term used for the general direction in which something is developing or changing. The origin of the word stems from “to revolve, rotate or turn”, and how true this meaning becomes as we watch the decades of fashion and interior design develop. The old saying “what goes around comes around” rang true this year as I walked the recent Highpoint Furniture Tradeshow in North Carolina. Little has changed from the previous year, which means trends succeeded last year and are here to stay for a while. One trend remained strong: a reclaimed, reused, distressed, recycled, worn, rubbed, aged, and rustic approach to furniture. Some pieces can be sophisticated and delicate in style and shape, while others are rough, chunky, and hefty in size. SPRING 2012 FURNITURE 2012 DECORATING TRENDS Louise XV and XVI continue to reign throughout the market as royal styles of furniture truly capture the washed, reclaimed look. Details like spindled or carved legs on credenzas, console tables, writing desks, and chairs accentuate the French theme along with weathered woods and upholstery wrapped in light beige and grey-toned linen. When I mention the popular furniture maker Restoration Hardware, clients suddenly understand the aged and weathered look – a recent client called it the “anthropologie look”. Urban Industrial comes to mind for those with a more contemporary or modern taste for style. Unique hand-painted chests, accent tables, and consoles of various lengths each have their own unique scars with chips on the edge, dings in the middle, and a mix of colours showing through from a number of previous paint jobs. RAFIH STYLE MAGAZINE 15 It is the look of having “been there”- furniture that comes with a history and stories to tell – yesteryear now at its best. Reclaimed wood is perfect for the eco-conscious lifestyle and is readily available in both genuine and reproduction forms. If you are in the market for a genuine reclaimed piece, be prepared to pay a premium for these unique pieces that are indeed worth the investment. Here we find trestle tables made from the solid beams of Southern Plantation-era homes, cabinets made from window panes and tin ceiling pieces, and reused stair newels and door hinges, which make up the very unique and beautiful array of furniture available on the market. While these pieces tend to be larger in size and rougher in finish, they remain beautiful and solid. We also see classic chesterfields creating buzz yet again this year. Keeping with tradition, these pieces are completely tufted with large rolled arms and a low back, wrapped in natural linen, and outlined with shoe nails. Its companion, the cigar chair, creates an aviator bomber jacket feel when covered in pull-up leather. Occasional table styles that work well with this theme include reproduced leather trunks with lids and leather handles and wrought iron/antique wood pieces. Wrought iron, when mixed with crystal, can spread a magnificent warm light over the scene. While reclaimed furniture remains popular in the contemporary world, retro is still the go-to for the ultra cool. Even though the look has been popular for years now, it is still considered to be in its prime by many. Styles that I remember my mom once having in the 60s and 70s have become today’s must have. Low coffee tables and entertainment pieces with smooth finishes and thin legs are shown in lighter teak-like finishes. Tangerine Tango was named colour of the year by Pantone, which has encouraged the presence of orange in various degrees. Versions of the “safer” orange tones range from copper and fall harvest to fiery sunset palettes. Vivid turquoise mixed with luscious creams and purple in varying tones were showcased in accessories as well as the main focal pieces. As we move into accessories, the more elaborate and patterned the better. Oversized graphic elements on upholstery, bedding, and wallpaper have made a huge comeback, as well as paisley on dining room chairs, sofas, and barstools. When tied in with the medium warm brown hues of reclaimed wood, this look becomes very warm and inviting. Mirrors, whether on furniture, walls, or backsplashes, has been on the market for a while now and still shines with pride. The larger the wall mirror, the better. Design it your way... It’s time to love where you live! Jennings Celebrating 127 Years Furniture & Design 4 32 Talbot St. • St. Thomas • 519-631-0410 • www.jenningsfurniture.com SPRING 2012 A greater amount of light reflected into a room marks the look of modern design. Swarovski crystals or silver details can crreate a mirrored feel of glamour and a touch of drama. Covered ottomans of all shapes, sizes, and colours can create the perfect accessory when wedged under console tables, in front of sofas as cocktail tables, or at the foot of your bed. Create a focal point for your room with a bold printed poof ottoman, or try a super large leather tufted ottoman to create a library setting. Area floor rugs have made a comeback thanks to the return of the hardwood floor, and with this return comes choice: from washed, faded, antique reproductions to bright, dyed cowhides. Shags are still on the scene in various lengths and colours and rugs in geometric designs compliment any style of room. And finally, chandeliers are huge – and I mean huge in every form of the word. Birdcages converted to chandeliers, metal chandelier spheres, spindling arm chandeliers, crystal chandeliers – the list goes on and on! The decorating trends of 2012 truly give you the option to reclaim your home’s look. Something old is definitely something new. One word describes it all – eclectic. If everything matches in your home, it might just be time for an update! “Reclaimed wood is perfect for the ecofriendly conscious lifestyle and is readily available in both genuine and reproduction”. Your existing cabinetry could be partly to blame. Leigh Ann & Tereza Hello The standard process in cabinet finishing relies on hazardous synthetic resins and dyes, the production of which often involves Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs) like the formaldehyde found in the box construction of cabinetry. Installing cabinetry produced in this manner runs the risk of inundating your home with VOCs, the presence of which can acutely affect your health. In the short term, symptoms can include eye, nose, and throat irritation; headaches; dizziness; and the exacerbation of symptoms related to asthma and - in the long-term - much more chronic conditions. In practical terms, this means that your choice of kitchen cabinetry is far from being simply a cabinet purchase; it is in fact closely related to your existing and ongoing commitment to healthy living. To Tereza and Leigh Ann Hello, of The Cabinet Studio (Canada) Inc., “going green” is not a fad - it is a responsibility. RAFIH STYLE MAGAZINE 23 RAFIH STYLE ADVERTISEMENT POOLSBYANGELO Angelo Mariani began working in the pool industry with his father. In 1982, when he started his own business, he brought his father on board. This summer, Pools by Angelo is celebrating its 30th anniversary. The Mariani family’s experience expands beyond Angelo’s 30 years as a business operator; looked at this way, it becomes multigenerational. Today, Mariani’s children Cristina and Angelo Jr. help him run the interiors of the business, completing a three-generation span of extensive pool knowledge. Mariani’s staff upholds close relationships with clients, relating them to family. These relationships become beneficial to both parties, as a lot of maintenance is involved in the upkeep of a pool. “I built the pool, so they can explain the problem to me over the phone and I can tell them the solution,” Mariani explains. “It’s like a doctor knowing a patient’s medical history.” Mariani also has over 25 years of experience with hot tubs. He began when hot tubs were innovative, so his business grew alongside the few North American manufacturers. Currently, Pools by Angelo carries industry leaders like the Bullfrog Spa, known for its patented and customized design. “We offer the best,” Mariani assures us, “not because of the name, but because of experience.” Mariani is excited to announce the arrival of a new advancement: a privacy gazebo that also serves as a hot tub cover. It closes with the turn of a key and is automatic and energy efficient. Mariani likes the product for safety purposes though, calling it “a great solution for little children being around the hot tub. You turn the key and you take it with you. No one can get hurt.” Pools by Angelo offers year-round services that are beneficial for hot tub and indoor pool owners. “Our customers love to use their hot tubs throughout the winter months. That’s why it’s important we stay open,” Cristina Mariani informs. “They need their hot tubs water tested, maintained, and sometimes technically serviced.” Another service on which Pools by Angelo prides itself is renovation. Over the years, all pools require restoration. Renovations also update pools to comply with the latest trends. For example, “there are vinyl liners so advanced it’s hard to tell the difference between a concrete or vinyl pool.” Popular renovations include such vinyl liner replacements, as well as concrete upgrades, pool depth alterations, and stair installations. Something new to the industry is pool depth alterations, in which Pools by Angelo can “transform eight or nine foot diving pools into four foot sports pools”. Purchasing a pool is not like buying a car; it is more like building a home. SPRING2012 2012 SPRING We know our business inside and out, and it shows! “A pool is a big investment, but requires lifelong attention. Pools by Angelo offers the security of thirty years of experience in not only pools, but hot tubs, technical service, and maintenance.” Each pool is a personalized structure best constructed with experienced installers. Since Mariani has been a builder himself, he brings firsthand experience to the table. Cristina believes this offers more to their clients, as installing an inground pool “is not like picking an item off a shelf, it’s a construction process where the customer chooses the type of shape, size, stair, and liner. Along with our industry knowledge and Angelo’s installation experience, we make a great team.” Rising beyond the common inground pool, Pools by Angelo constructs both indoor and onground pools. Indoor pools are built as the house is but with different components. Contrary to the popular use of galvanized steel walls, Pools by Angelo carries a new material for construction. A polypropylene and polystyrene wall is used so the pool will last for life. Mariani believes indoor and outdoor pools would benefit from polymer walls. Onground pools rest half in, half out of the ground and carry the ability and strength of an inground pool. However, the owner has the option of modifying the pool at his or her leisure. These pools offer more privacy and potential than an above ground pool, but are also more affordable. Though it may seem early in the year to be thinking about installing a pool, it’s important to get on a schedule. “Slots start to fill up early,” Cristina emphasizes, “so, the sooner we’re contacted, the sooner we can plan with you.” Planning is essential and does take time. The spatial location of a pool (where it is placed) must be decided in accordance with family needs, while prospective pool owners must factor in the allocated time for the proper permits. These are just some possible considerations. There is, of course, incentive for starting early. Says Mariani, “people who plan ahead get to use their pool this season and start on their landscaping.” A pool is a big investment that requires lifelong attention. Pools by Angelo offers the security of thirty years of experience in not only pools, but hot tubs, technical service, and maintenance. Windows and doors form a considerable investment as part of the overall value of your home. It is worth ensuring that you understand and consider the following important factors before taking your decision: Home and Window Styles Windows and doors can add appeal by drawing attention to your home. Take a good look at both the inside and outside of your home and see if it matches the style of your home and your expectations. Creativity Review our complete line of products and our suggested combinations. You may want to create unique configurations and add your personal touch by combining transoms and decorative sidelites. Quality Be careful when choosing the material the product is made out of and consider its advantages. Wood has a history of warping, rotting and splitting. Our windows are made from vinyl. Vinyl has been around for almost 35 years and is energy efficient, durable, rot-proof, insect-proof, and weather resistant. It is made with chemicals that inhibit UV-degradation. Vinyl can be painted any color you desire, with heatwelded corners that hold up best over time. Type If you are replacing windows or doors in your home, it is not necessary to replace them with the same type. You may want to replace a slider or single hung with a casement window or a patio door with a garden door. Application Take into consideration ventilation needs, sunlight needs, your privacy and that of your neighbors, and the position in your home where the window and door will go. SPRING 2012 Glass Options Glass adds a touch of elegance to any home. Choose a style of glass that reflects your style, whether it’s tinted, or a decorative glass with caming. Security You want your front door to look beautiful, unique and at the same time be secure. Increasing the distance from the lockset to the deadbolt spreads the impact load from potential break-ins, thereby increasing security. Check the frame of the door to be sure that it’s strong, tight and well-constructed. Check the glass and ensure that it can withstand forced entry. Often windows and doors are the easiest way to break into a house. Ordinary float glass used in the wrong application can also result in personal injury. In such places tempered or laminated glass is often used due to their ability to withstand deliberate attacks. Energy Efficiency Check out weather-stripping, Low-e coatings and argon gas-filling options. All of these combine to make the window more energy efficient and environmentally friendly. Windows and Doors should be Energy Star Rated. Ease of Operation Test the windows in the store and compare them to the competition. Double hung windows should be easy to operate and tilt without struggling. Casements should crank fully open, easily and quietly. Ease of Maintenance Test the windows in the store and compare them to the competition. The windows should provide for an easy mechanism to clean from the inside of the house. Required Noise Level A lot of buildings are exposed to a high degree of external noise. Your home may be adjutant to a highway or a busy main road, manufacturing unit, school etc. Any doubleglazed window will reduce noise pollution significantly, but this may not always be enough. Therefore it is often necessary to use double-glazed windows with enhanced acoustic insulating properties. Performance Check the Weather-stripping of the windows and doors. A door or window that fits snugly within the frame will allow air and water infiltration. Fiberglass or steel insulated door panels insulate better than hollow panels or wood doors. Warranty Check warranties to be sure that the company will be there for you if you have a problem. Don’t be fooled into buying products from a no-name company, as you may be left out in the cold. All Meloche Windows Ltd. products come with an extensive written warranty covering elements such as the glass, workmanship and parts. We warrant that all our products will withstand even the toughest conditions. After - Sales Service Buy from a manufacturer that stands behind its products and provides prompt after sales service. We provide “onsite” service to support our products, which allows you complete peace of mind in knowing that there is no risk in purchasing our products. Avoid using high powered washers, ammonia, abrasive based cleaning agents, glass gleaners, tile cleaners. Using these products over time will cause cracks. Building Code It is important to ensure that the size and type of window or door you chose is in conformity with your local building codes (egress requirements, fire rating etc.) The pigments that are used in paint are almost identical to those used in vinyl, but vinyl’s color goes all the way through. A little rubdown with Soft Scrub will bring vinyl back to its original brilliance. You will be surprised with how much brighter aged vinyl becomes by carrying out simple cleaning. Not the original color, to be sure, but the scrubbing will result in a marked improvement. How can I increase the life of my windows and doors? Simple regular maintenance will ensure trouble - free operation and ultimately extend the life of your windows and doors. The frequency of cleaning and maintenance required is determined by atmospheric conditions. How do I clean window frames and doors? As a general rule, all parts exposed when the window or door is closed should be washed down with warm soapy water (mild detergent) or a plastic cleaner. Use a soft cloth, sponge or towel to avoid scratching. Rinse well with water. The exterior surface of window frames and doors may collect a layer of dirt over time depending upon the environmental conditions. Usually, rainfall should be sufficient to remove accumulated dirt on external surface. However, in conditions with smog, excess smoke, or dirt, the exterior surface should be cleaned more regularly. Soft bristle brushes or low-pressure spray cleaner may also be used to clean the exterior surface. How do I clean glass? Glass is a durable material when exposed to normal atmospheric conditions, but it does suffer some surface deterioration. One of the most aggressive elements in the atmosphere is water. An adsorbed layer of water attacks the surface of glass, dissolving or releasing certain elements that cause the water to become alkaline. Other than hydrofluoric acid, alkaline solutions are the most aggressive in their attack on glass. With repeated wetting and drying without washing, the dissolved products will appear as a whitish scum. This reduces the brilliance of the surface and in severe conditions can obscure visibility. This latter condition is common where condensation is permitted to occur regularly. Consequently, frequent cleaning is important. Glass can be cleaned with warm soapy water, vinegar-based cleaners or any cleaning product specifically designed and formulated for the cleaning of glass. Avoid using ammonia or alcohol-based cleaners, which can cause streaking. Care should be taken not to damage glazing, frame finish, or insulating unit seals by overgenerous application of cleaners. Wipe the cleaning solutions on the glass in a circular motion, applying light to moderate pressure. If streaks appear, rinse the surface with clean water. Using a clean, lint-free cloth, wipe dry the interior glazing surfaces, including any interior frame or hardware components to prevent spotting or water damage. To clean grease, oil, tape adhesive, crayons or paint, apply a small amount of mild abrasive or acetone (mineral spirits) to a cloth or towel and rub only the affected area. Repeat the cleaning steps listed above once complete. Glass should be cleaned by starting at the top of the building and systematically working down to the glass installed on lower levels. This technique reduces the possibility of residue and cleaning solution rundown on glass previously cleaned. Caution: Do not clean glass or frames while they are exposed to direct sunlight. Detergents and soap based cleaners may dry prematurely and leave a hard to remove residue on the frame or glass surface. 6 1 4 4 M o r t o n I n d u s t r i a l P k w y. , Wi n d s o r, O N . Unlike most janitorial companies, which clean only for appearance, Green-Tech is a company that also cleans for health. In past decades, the public health and environmental protection communities largely focused on obvious outside pollution. In recent years however, as buildings have been built more tightly in order to conserve energy, we have noticed that health risks associated with indoor environments have increased. Particularly, this means we stand a higher risk of being exposed to the harsh effects of traditional cleaning chemicals as we spend more and more of our time indoors, occupying tightly sealed working environments. As the cleaning profession has evolved into one of the most important service sectors today, Green-Tech proudly views itself as a manager and protector of the indoor environment. Just as doctors are here to cure and heal people of sickness and disease, the cleaning industry is evolving to take preventative measures against such ailments; this is what cleaning for health is all about. By changing our approach to cleaning the indoor environment, Green-Tech is ensuring that its services will contribute to the safety and wellbeing of building occupants throughout our community. In 2006, Green-Tech Building Maintenance started with the ambition to change the cleaning industry. From the beginning, company President Peter Singeisen always saw the need to “clean green”. This means focusing on not only the effects of cleaning on the environment, but also the ways in which cleaning impacts human health. Green cleaning provides clients with a healthy building, including drastic reductions in dust, bacteria, and germs. When companies work together with Green-Tech, they contribute to the green movement and promote an environmentally responsible image to their staff, clients, and communities. Today, a lot of companies are seeing the value of working in a safe and healthy environment. When people feel better, their quality of life increases, resulting in more satisfied employees and customers. Working in a safe and healthy environment contributes to positive attitudes both on and off the job. Statistics show that when people feel better, they become more productive and more motivated. This increase in worker morale results in fewer absences, which can increase productivity by up to an astounding 12% within the first few months. Proper maintenance of a company’s indoor environment ensures the protection of its assets through proper preservation. As for clients and customers, it is no surprise that they like to conduct business in a clean and healthy environment, in which they have the pleasure of interacting with pleasant and motivated employees. Green-Tech differentiates itself from the competition by offering training and continuous learning programs in both “cleaning for health” and microbiology. These sessions teach its staff the specific environments in which bacteria, germs, and viruses live and thrive. Most importantly, the staff at GreenTech understands how to effectively eliminate and stop the spread of these microorganisms, in order to create the healthiest environment possible. As the threat of dangerous viruses grows in today’s society, Green-Tech aims its training and learning programs at understanding the ways in which viruses travel, adapt, and can be most effectively eliminated. The success of Green-Tech is largely due to its wonderful staff and management, all of whom are passionate about their work and guarantee customer satisfaction. A new service that Green-Tech is providing for its clients is a server-based communications program, which launched in January of this year. This is a user-free software communication program that lets Green-Tech’s clients communicate their needs directly via the Internet and receive instant responses. Green-Tech is one of the first Canadian companies to provide this service, adopted from janitorial companies in the United States. Customers can access this online program in order to view information, like their building’s job description; submit, monitor, and track work orders; view cleaning inspection results; and submit surveys about their cleaning service. Customers always receive instant feedback to any inquiry. This program lets Green-Tech truly understand the customer’s point of view so that it can provide the best customer service. This is the newest development in the cleaning industry. Green-Tech began with the ambition to change the cleaning industry. Now, six years later, many local companies are enjoying the benefits of its “green cleaning” program. Change is always a challenge; getting people to look at the cleaning industry differently and value it for what it really does is a task that Green-Tech takes very seriously. Green-Tech strives to demonstrate that quality cleaning is an important part of our culture. Once people experience the advantages of a clean and healthy building, they will not settle for less. As society values the outside environment and people value their immediate surroundings, the time has come to manage the indoor environments as enthusiastically as we do our natural world; this means cleaning them for health. www.cleangreen.ca SPRING 2012 RAFIH STYLE MAGAZINE 33 RAFIH STYLE BUSINESS TAX TALK By Irfan Qadir, CMA, CFP. Principal with Gerald Duthie & Co., LLP, Chartered Accountants. Tax planning should begin early in the year and should not be left to the last minute. As we near the end of the first quarter of 2012, with three quarters of the year remaining, there is still opportunity to plan ahead. Here are some tax tips for you to consider: Split Income with Family If you own a business, consider employing your spouse and children provided that they are constructively and factually providing services. You can pay them the same market value rates as you would pay to an arms length employee. Since we have a progressive income tax regime this arrangement could be very effective in keeping the overall tax cost lower as the same household income can be shared amongst family members. Contribute to a Spousal RRSP If you are eligible to contribute to a RRSP plan and if your spouse is in the lower income tax bracket, consider making a spousal RRSP contribution. As long as you leave the money in the spousal plan for a reasonable period of time, 36 months in most cases, any withdrawals after that time will be reported as income on your spouse’s tax. Potentially, this can result in a significant tax reduction. Consider making the contribution early in the year. Revisit your Business Structure This is a good time to look at whether or not you have the optimum business structure in place. If you are self employed, depending on your level of income it may be beneficial for you to consider incorporating your business. SPRING 2012 It may result in a significant tax advantage as the corporate tax on active business income earned through a corporation is taxed at 15.5% (in Ontario) on the first $500,000 of taxable income. Organize your Documentation Be proactive. Take a look at how you record and store your financial information. Have a system in place that tracks and organizes information efficiently. Nothing is more nerve racking than looking for information and not being able to locate it when you need it (happens to all of us). Lost information could very well mean lost tax savings. Good documentation is key to effective tax planning, particularly, when you are faced with the specter of a tax audit. Lend Money to Children for Longterm Investments If you have funds available for long term investments consider lending or gifting cash to children under 18. The investments can then be made by the children. The attribution rules do not apply to capital gains earned by a minor and, therefore, this could potentially be a very effective tool for splitting family income. Trigger Capital Gains Although capital losses can be carried forward to future years indefinitely, these losses can only be applied against capital gains. Now is a good time to take inventory of your investment portfolio and if you have any unused capital losses from earlier years, consider selling off some of your portfolio to realize capital gains to the extent of capital losses available. Make sure that the decision to sell is carefully thought out and is not purely tax driven. Pay Dividends to Fund Education If you have a successful business and if you have young children who will be pursuing post-secondary education you may consider a corporate reorganization. An estate freeze may make good sense depending on your circumstances. The children can then become shareholders and potentially receive dividends to fund their post-secondary education which in many cases is fairly expensive. Make Tax Installment Payments on Time Unless there are unavoidable circumstances, it is very costly to borrow from the tax man. The reason is that Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) charges interest that is compounded daily, on late or deficient tax installments. This is a good time to take stock of what your expected income will be for 2012 and whether or not, depending on the nature and source of income and deductions available, you will owe any taxes. If you are likely to owe more than $3,000 then it is advisable to make tax installments to avoid interest. Generally speaking, if you make the installments in accordance with the installment tax notice sent to you by CRA, you should be able to avoid interest and penalties. One final note: Some of these tax strategies require consideration of other matters specific to your circumstances. It is, therefore, important to consult your tax advisor before implementation. But a home-that’s different. It’s your place, an architectural shell you’ve filled with the beauty of life, the emotion of living. Whether it’s your first home or your dream home, the most important fact is … it’s your home. At least, it is your home for as long as you continue to pay the mortgage. That’s why you budget carefully and make those mortgage payments each month. But, what if you couldn’t? What if sickness, injury or death made it impossible to keep up with the mortgage payments? Would your family be able to stay in its home? Fortunately, there are ways to help ensure your family will always have a roof over its head, regardless of what happens to you. which is best for your situation? Let’s take a look. Traditional mortgage insurance insures your mortgage and will pay off the total outstanding amount of your mortgage when you die. Most lending institutions offer mortgage insurance as part of their mortgage options and they’ll usually integrate the premiums into your total mortgage payments. With mortgage insurance, your lender owns the policy and if you find a better mortgage rate at another lending institution, you usually need to re-qualify at the new lending institution. Unlike a life insurance policy, the amount of coverage decreases as you pay down your mortgage. If anything happens to you, the death benefit is automatically used to pay off the outstanding mortgage balance. A personal life insurance policy insures you, not your mortgage. You determine the amount of coverage you want-it’s not tied to the value of your mortgage. SPRING 2012 You own the policy, so you have the freedom to name your beneficiaries and they can choose how to use the proceeds. You can, switch to another lending institution without jeopardizing your coverage and your coverage doesn’t decrease as your mortgage is paid down, which means that for every dollar of mortgage principal repaid, there will be additional insurance proceeds available to your family at a time when it may need it the most. You usually can use the benefit to help pay off your outstanding mortgage loan, make payments while you recover, or for any other personal or business need. Also, your policy can be customized with the options and features you choose, which may include having your premiums waived if you become disabled. Disability insurance protects your ability to continue to make mortgage payments by providing money if you can’t work. You may have a group plan at work that includes disability insurance. But, group coverage ceases when you leave your job, and if you’re self-employed you may not have a plan. A group plan may also have limits on the amount paid out in the event of disability, and may have a more restrictive definition which may limit your coverage. In addition, if your health improves your benefits may stop, forcing your return to work prematurely. A personal disability plan can supplement other disability benefits in ways that make sense for you. Critical illness insurance generally pays you a one-time lump sum benefit amount if you are diagnosed with a critical illness or condition, as defined in your policy. Critical illness insurance is not tied to a mortgage or any other personal or business loan. You usually can use the benefit to help pay off your outstanding mortgage loan, make payments while you recover, or for any other personal or business need. If you want your home to be a secure no matter what happens to you, having enough insurance to cover your mortgage debt is essential. And, if you want to be able to maintain your family’s lifestyle come what may, disability and critical illness insurance are equally important. We can show you how insurance can play an important role in bringing your financial security plan home to stay. RAFIH STYLE PROFILE Miles & Co. Chartered Accountants, a local Chartered Accountant firm with big plans, stands proudly in the heart of Windsor’s flourishing Walkerville district. In its present form, the firm is the result of a lineage of diligent, successful work that dates back to 2001, the year in which Ed Miles’ founded his original practice. “My background was in tax,” Miles explained, “having worked in the tax groups of some prominent international CA firms. Early in my career, I realized that the most important concern of nearly every business I encountered was the minimization of tax. I enjoyed everything about tax, particularly with respect to solving problems and helping people, and I wanted to build a practice that focused on that.” Miles, who has always concentrated on servicing the local professional community and its client bases, quickly gained a reputation for offering top-quality tax advice and planning at a reasonable rate. With his client base rapidly expanding, Miles’ practice expanded, developing over time into a full-service Chartered Accountant firm by selectively adding to its staff a number of highly skilled tax professionals. Today, Miles & Co. envisions itself as a comprehensive firm of serious tax specialists. “While we can provide regular accounting services to our clients,” Miles explains, “it was important to us that we maintain our position as a leading provider of tax services. Tax is a complicated area, and if you don’t specialize in it you run the risk of making mistakes.” The firm owed much of its initial success to the cultivation and maintenance of positive relationships with other CA’s in the city. This business dynamic is borne out of a spirit of cooperation, rather than competition, and is made possible by Miles & Co.’s laser-sharp focus on its core area of expertise: tax. Along these lines, Miles’ growing tax practice made a significant step forward with the addition of Ian Murphy, CA. Murphy, who joined Miles & Co. from a large CA firm’s tax group, boasts significant experience with Scientific Research and Experiment Development tax credits and Canadian and US personal and corporate tax. This body of expertise meshed well with Miles’ strengths in tax planning, reorganization, and more complicated cross-border structures. “I had been looking for the right fit for my next career move for several years,” relates Murphy. “I wanted to continue to grow as a tax professional, and wanted to build on the many positive relationships with other CA’s that I had developed over the course of my career. Miles & Co. offered me that opportunity.” Murphy cites his several productive connections within the Chartered Accountant community as an important contributing factor to his professional success. “When I get a new client,” he explains, “it tends to be a referral from another CA firm. So, I can continue to work closely with so many other CA’s whom I respect and admire. I also am in a unique situation in that Ed and I work closely on every tax issue of significance, and we learn from one another on a daily basis.” Murphy was made partner in 2010; with its focus renewed on offering taxation services to other CA firms and the public at large, the practice began to grow rapidly. Serious Tax Advice SPRING 2012 Currently, Miles & Co. has 16 employees and associates, including five CA’s and two CGA’s. “The more we focused on tax, the more the practice seemed to grow, allowing us to add even more vital resources to the team,” stated Miles. “Our cross-border practice was growing exponentially, particularly with the IRS’s revamped approach to requiring US tax providers to pass a competency exam, which prevented some local firms from preparing US returns. In response to a growing client demand, our approach was to solidify our expertise in this area.” This ambition led to the addition of Michael Murphy, LLB. As an experienced immigration lawyer, Murphy is able to provide Miles & Co’s cross-border clients with a unique, additional level of comfort. The elder Murphy’s expertise is particularly significant to clients involved in implementing cross-border tax structures that require key employees to work on both sides of the border. In Michael Murphy’s own words, “I’ve always enjoyed working with accountants, and the opportunity to work with a CA firm that had experience in this area certainly appealed to me. The value to any client is greatest when their accountant and lawyer are sitting at the same table together, and when they’re working together in the same office, year-round, the synergies are tremendous.” As Miles & Co.’s client base grew, the firm witnessed a significant increase in the size of its clients. Eventually, it became necessary to bring aboard someone capable of understanding the myriad complexities that are associated with operating as a large company. By welcoming Paul Kriz, CA-CBV, and Marta Sebestyen, CGA to the firm in 2011, Miles & Co. was able to effectively address this area of necessity. Kriz entered the accounting profession in 1976, and has served family-operated and privately-owned businesses in Essex County for over four decades. In addition to his CA title, Kriz went on to receive his Chartered Business Valuation and Certified Fraud Examiner designations, participating in special assignments in both Canada and the US. A recently retired partner from an international accounting firm, Kriz brings to the table a wealth of experience; he provides invaluable guidance to the firm. “Paul was an integral member of a small local firm that skyrocketed to become the largest firm in the city on the way to eventually joining an international firm,” Miles explains. “Paul’s firsthand understanding of this process makes him essential to Miles & Co., in-house. And, when you add his history of customer service and ability to handle any type of client query, he has been a wonderful asset to the firm.” Sebestyen offers 17 years of dedicated efforts to her clients, with a focus on all aspects of the internal accounting function, as well as financial statement and taxation compliancefiling requirements. A Simply Accounting Partner, she assists her clients with technology instruction, support, implementation, upgrading, and trouble-shooting. “As the firm has undergone such significant growth,” explains Murphy, “it’s vital to maintain organized approaches to our client service. Marta’s broad-based approach and commitment to exceptional client service are exactly what we need at this stage.” With various other key, experienced additions supplementing the aforementioned tax professionals, Miles & Co. feels that it is well-positioned to experience further significant growth in the near future. In the words of Miles, himself, “we now have an office in Michigan, and we’re on the verge of adding an additional Windsor-area location to make it more convenient for our clients. We certainly anticipate further expansion into Michigan and along the Toronto-Windsor corridor in the coming years. The vision we had of a tax-focused practice is coming to fruition. We’re serious about tax, and the market seems to appreciate that.” 1601 Wyandotte Street East, Windsor, ON., CA N8Y 1C8 T: 519-253-6077 F:519-253-5003 [email protected] RAFIH STYLE MAGAZINE 43 RAFIH STYLE WHEELS By Jesse Ziter It is difficult to talk about Detroit’s North American International Auto Show without talking about Detroit. In recent years, the NAIAS has become something of a convenient media trope, persistently presented to us as a microcosm of the beleaguered city itself. For Windsorites who live and work outside of the orbit of the Big Three, the Auto Show (we all know which one we’re referring to) becomes something of a reification of the industry that, if you’ll pardon the regrettable pun, really does in several ways drive our city. In plain terms, this is to say that the Auto Show constitutes a livable, material event that reflects the relativel prosperity of the automotive industry in any given year more immediately and accessibly than can any number of sales facts and figures. The NAIAS, depending on the year, is a tangible representation of recession or an obvious testament to excess and prosperity. BMW X8 concept SPRING 2012 While this approach to thinking about the Auto Show can be fruitful, it also has a tendency, if you’ll endure another pun, to bear low-hanging fruit. For most Windsorites, this sort of amateur socioeconomic study might best be sidestepped in favour of a more grateful, appreciative position that renegotiates the NAIAS as, well, a convenient opportunity to to collectively celebrate the very shiny output of millions in the presence of thousands. The NAIAS is, after all, a genuinely world-class annual event that, in a sense, accidentally takes place in our proverbial backyard. This is welcome. It is also difficult to talk about the Auto Show concisely, such is the sheer, singular scale of the event. This year’s show was particularly well attended, with final tallies expected to confirm the presence of nearly 800,000 members of the public, constituting the largest cumulative showgoer turnout since 2005. This year’s edition ran from January 9 to January 22 in its now familiar Cobo Hall environs. As ever, the event showcased a multitude of interesting vehicles, both real and (partially) imagined. Of particular interest to Windsorites, Rafih portfolio automakers exited another year’s show with a coruscating collection of decorations. Notably, the Range Rover Evoque fought off competition from the BMW X3 to emerge with the 2012 North American Truck of the Year prize. Symptomatic of greater trends within the automotive industry, none of 2012’s pretenders to this throne can be accurately called trucks by conventional definition. Although hardly a shrinking violet of a vehicle, even the Evoque is Land Rover’s most compact, fuelefficient option. In fact, this paradigm shift towards economical restraint in the truck sector reached its apogee at this year’s show as the comedian Jon Lovitz (we’re not sure either) introduced the Smart For-Us concept, an electric prototype vehicle meant to alloy Smart’s eco-friendly, urbanite brand ethos with the conventional American pickup truck. Smart For-US Concept RAFIH STYLE MAGAZINE 45 Plaudits are also owed to the 2013 Ford Fusion and Lexus LF-FC, winners of this year’s EyesOn Design awards for production and concept cars, respectively. These internationally recognized accolades, the centrepieces of a prestigious charitable gala, are intended to honour vehicles making their North American or worldwide debut at the NAIAS. Although unlikely to ever see the light of day in its 2012 guise, the LF-LC is adroitly emblematic of the Auto Show’s potential as a space for extraordinary design unfettered by the forces of practicality. Existing somewhere in the liminal space between fantasy and reality, this front-engined, RWD hybrid stared down showgoers with an aggressively angular front end elegantly topped by a swooping, almost impossibly impractical glass canopy. The LF-LC is clearly a statement vehicle, the almost arrogant opulence of which is meant to attract the eyes - if not the pocketbooks - of a younger, hipper demographic than is normally serviced by the brand’s staid, utilitarian interpretation of luxury. This demographic was similarly solicited this year by the NAIAS organization’s increased social media presence, including but not limited to its versatile Twitter presence as @NAIASDetroit. Lexus LF-FC 2013 Mazda CX-5 SPRING 2012 “It is possible to come to understand Detroit’s annual Auto Show as an annual progress report for a city and industry or simply a jewel in the annual Windsor-Detroit social calendar. ” Comparatively benign, although exponentially more practical, is the redesigned 2013 Fusion. Built on a new platform, next year’s Fusion caters to the diverse needs of its midsize-sedancentric clientele by offering five powertrain sources, including three gasoline options, a conventional hybrid, and the new Fusion Energi plug-in hybrid. This final option is perhaps the most interesting, boasting a legitimate claim to the title of “world’s most fuel-efficient car”. The Energi is expected to outperform, in terms of energy efficiency, both the Chevrolet Volt and the Prius plug-in hybrid, all while looking like, for lack of a more elegant descriptor, a normal car. 2013 Lincoln MKS It is possible to come to understand Detroit’s annual Auto Show as an annual progress report for a city and industry or simply a jewel in the annual Windsor-Detroit social calendar. It is also, however, understandable as a shopping mall. As ever, several of the aforementioned vehicles are either available at or en route to Rafih Auto Mall showrooms in Windsor. 2013 Ford Fusion 2013 Dodge Dart INTERNATIONAL RESOURCES KNOWLEDGE LEADERSHIP EXPERTISE When you need assistance transacting business locally and internationally, we can help. However, the more fortunate among us, those who have been waiting in anticipation for this weather to come, have much reason to celebrate. They happen to be the lucky ones escaping these chilly conditions for a warm-weather destination! Florida is always very popular, and many folks spend every winter minute in this state’s warm, humid climate. Others may prefer Mexico, the Dominican Republic, or Jamaica for a temporary release from scraping ice-covered windshields. One decidedly wonderful idea for winter travel is a cruise. A cruise offers a multitude of fabulous options, including a luxurious atmosphere and decadent entertainment. However, being mindful of having so many different experiences in a short amount of time, one has to remember to pack smart. SPRING 2012 The first rule of the thumb when deciding what to wear for your cruise: Swimwear will be a huge staple in your cruise wardrobe. Know your cruise ship category. Certain cruises are more formal Whether you prefer a one or two-piece suit, the most than others, especially when it comes to evening entertainment. important thing is to pack plenty. Three, four, or even five Most cruises, however, do have at least two formal nights, and some suits will do you well on your trip – depending on the require more regulated attire for strolling around inside the actual length, of course. Keep in mind that you definitely don’t ship. Be sure to look into the etiquette guidelines of your specific want to be waiting for your suit to dry, and you probably cruise ship; this can also help you to avoid overpacking! don’t want to wear the same suit day in, day out – or even “You will be spending lots, if not most of your time by the pool or beach, so, really, treat your swimsuit like an outfit.” for two days straight, either! You will be spending lots, if not most of your time by the pool or beach, so, really, treat your swimsuit like an outfit. Not to mention that this, of course, gives us more reasons to bring our cute beach cover ups and sexy sarongs! Oh, and because they pack well, too! As with any trip, there are certain wardrobe essentials for cruising the ocean blue. Let’s go over some of these important items: It is important to pack your basics, of course, such as cute walking shorts and a nice, airy blouse. However, planning your colour palette can really help you to minimize the amount of pieces you bring. Choose one dark neutral, one light neutral, and one or two bold colours. Mix this up by pairing a dark top with light shorts, a colourful patterned dress with a neutral blazer, or a light blouse with a bright skirt; the list goes on and on. I can’t overstress how much this will help you. If you are unsure of which colours to go with, pick out a couple from your favourite patterned summer dresses. The flowing dress is probably the most important piece you could have. It is a garment you can slip over your bathing suit or dress up with some jewels and fun wedges for a night out. Don’t feel like you have to go bold, floor length, or boho. There are many cute shift dresses available in light, airy fabrics with pretty patterns and details for everyone. Since they don’t take up much space in your suitcase, feel free to bring a few but do try to stick with the same colour tones, so you can interchange your accessories with ease. RAFIH STYLE MAGAZINE 51 A comfort shoe, preferably with a rubber sole, is a must. You don’t want to be sliding all over the deck in steel-point stilettos! If you love your heels, a great option is a wedge, as these offer more support and are more likely to have a rubber sole. There are many stylish flats to choose from, as well. Pick sandals that aren’t only cute by the pool, as you may want to wear them while you stroll the beach visiting magnificent shops. You don’t want to be hiking back to your room just to change your shoes. Lastly, it is important to note that cruise ship evening wear can range tremendously. You will see everything from cocktail attire all the way to full-glitz evening gowns. I say, “have fun with it”! You only live once; if you can, be daring, bold, and dazzling. Every cruise has a formal night, so go full glam and choose a bright dress or gown – one that perhaps you wouldn’t normally wear – and adorn it freely with beautiful jewelry and chic accessories; this is your statement piece for your trip. Chances are, you won’t be running into these people ever again, so embrace the chance to be a super fashionista and really strut your stuff. Happy cruising! Journey Air caters to a diverse clientele comprised by roughly equal numbers of careerminded students and amateur hobbyists, including both men and women of various ages. Currently, Journey Air can accommodate approximately 100 students, meaning it boasts ample room for new registrants, effective immediately. In the longterm, Journey plans on establishing itself as a fully sanctioned Private Career College, capable of offering fully realized professional commercial pilot training. At present, an education at Journey constitutes an excellent first step towards fulfilling any career goals you or your children might have in the aviation industry. A transplant to Windsor from nearby Ridgetown, Ontario, Jon Carnie grew up with similar career aspirations to many young children. “I’ve always wanted to be a pilot,” he explains. “It was my childhood goal.” Carnie did not, however, see taking to the skies as the quixotic aspiration that many consider it to be, successfully pursuing pilot training in London before taking a position at Journey as a full-time instructor. On a day-to-day basis, Carnie facilitates and conducts individualized two to three hour lessons, which supplement hourlong in-plane sessions with realistic simulation exercises, one-on-one “ground school” educational seminars, and personalized debriefings. Somewhat surprisingly, current Ontario legislation allows for intrepid aviators as young as 14 years of age to hold student pilot permits, meaning that prospective pilots can begin their hands-on practical educations years before they can get behind the controls of decidedly more pedestrian vehicles. Recreational permits, which come with a more liberal set of associated restrictions, are granted to pilots as young as 16. Of course, at the opposite end of the spectrum, Carnie has educated several first-time flyers who were well into their fifties. Hopefully assuaging the fears of any prospective pilots, Journey Air’s on-ground education naturally and importantly features a substantial safety training component. Promises Carnie, Journey Air has “an impeccable safety record. We teach safety as our number one goal.” Significantly, Journey Air boasts an impressive fleet of aircraft that offers a broader range of flight training options than the local competition, including three Diamond DA20-C1 planes - featuring avionics capable of flight under Instrument Flight Rules (IFR) - and a Cessna 172R. In the pipeline is the addition of a Diamond DA42 twin-engine plane. Although this winter’s magnanimous conditions have offered few impediments to any outdoor endeavours, Carnie is quick to emphasize that flight training is a year-round activity in our area, even under normal conditions. Although hardly tropical by global standards, Windsor-Essex boasts perhaps the absolute finest weather for pilot training in the country. Local pilots enjoy the luxury of (relatively) moderate temperatures while avoiding the lake effect snow that plagues nearby training centres in the London area. Carnie hopes that prospective airmen and women understand piloting as both a tenable, longterm professional vocation and a realistic, rewarding, full-time hobby. Casting popular diversions such as snowmobiling and boatingin sharp relief, hobbyist pilots need not take any seasons - or even months - off from pursuing their chosen leisure activity. Journey’s privileged access to Windsor International Airport provides students with a centralized pilot training environment, which reduces the commuting time that links various phases of the pilot training curriculum, thereby ensuring the most efficient possible use of paid and personal time. Carnie emphasizes the convenience of the quick and unfettered access afforded to Journey students at, if we’re honest, a presently under-capacity airport facility. At time same time, YQG (as the airport is known to industry types) still offers the amenities and educational experiences associated with a modern, tower-controlled international airport. Drawing from his impressive portfolio of personal flight and flight instruction experience, Carnie relates that pilot training is “not just a skill to learn” but an opportunity to encourage one’s positive personal development through the rigorous exercise of “critical decision making”. For young students, flight training can adroitly complement and accelerate the ongoing process of personal maturation. It is, of course, also an eminently fun and rewarding hobby, for both student and instructor. Whether taking to the skies appeals to you as a lifelong vocation or has simply been an unsatisfied itch since the days of your own childhood fancies, Jon Carnie and his colleague as Journey Air Pilot Training invite you to get in touch. As a Windsorite, you already enjoy wonderful access to this unique opportunity raise the bar for your own professional or personal education. As such, many people are unaware of the options available to them. At Kafka Insurance Brokers Ltd., clients are offered choices in order to provide them with peace of mind. Kafka believes that people should have a professional review their policies with them from time to time to ensure that coverages are up to date, which other options for insurance may not necessarily be equipped to address. Esther Kafka, President at Kafka Insurance Brokers Ltd., says that, with all the options available to her, there is no one that she can’t help. Insurance has been Esther’s passion for over eighteen years; in June 2008, she broadened her horizons and opened her own brokerage. With a brokerage comes more choice: Kafka Insurance deals with eight different auto insurance companies, over sixteen different home insurers, as well as countless specialty, business, and life insurance carriers. When dealing with such a broad range of companies, Esther has a lot of options when considering hard-to-place risks, such as vacant dwellings, student rentals, and “toys” like motorcycles, four-wheelers, RV’s, and boats. Anything can happen, and with Kafka Insurance, you know that you are covered for the things that are important to you. Many people have gaps in their coverage due to a lack of awareness. For example, out-of-province medical coverage is available as an annual, inexpensive policy that people don’t usually consider taking advantage of. It is especially important to realize in a city like Windsor, where we frequently visit the United States, that we forget the fact that our medical coverage may be restricted when we cross the border. The United States is one of the most expensive countries in the world in which to have a medical procedure done, and many of us would not be covered for the bulk of the cost in the event of a medical emergency while out of country. Such an occurrence would be financially devastating to most families. It’s important to check policy wordings, especially “exclusions”, to understand what is and isn’t covered. Here in Essex County, sewer backup coverage is a huge concern. Many homeowners are faced with either zero coverage or as little as $5000, which in most cases would only address clean-up in the event of this type of loss. Esther has seen clients decline sewer back-up coverage because of the $120 (or less) annual price tag. Her attitude is that it’s better to have and not need than to need and not have. Says Kafka,“there’s nothing worse than walking down into your basement to find that your contents and furnace are sitting in 6 inches of water and realizing that you don’t have coverage. At that moment you’re not thinking about the $10 a month that you saved, you just want to make one phone call and have someone take care of the mess.” Valuable coverage such as this can be debated in terms of our discretionary expenditure; giving up one trip a week through the morning drive-through can pay for very important insurance coverage such as sewer back-up, outof-province medical or even life insurance. Everyone at Kafka Insurance Brokers Ltd. is committed to identifying a family’s needs, searching for the best rate, and securing coverage that is client-specific. Kafka Insurance is a local company where clients are known by name and are welcome to come in to talk, ask questions, and seek advice. Esther internalizes the message on the framed print in her office: “If we don’t take care of the customer, somebody else will.” While auto insurance coverages are mostly standardized, property insurance varies between four different types of policies, plus has the option of adding countless additional coverages. People generally aren’t aware of what type of policy they have for their home because they usually just look at their coverage limits. RAFIH STYLE MAGAZINE 61 RAFIH STYLE LIFE & STYLE By Jessie Beatty G r e e n ArchitecturE B r i n g t h e O u t s i d e Going Green. A phrase commonly associated with your lifestyle; recycling, reducing your carbon footprint, etc. Rarely do you think of it affecting the style of your home. However, the concept of ‘going green’ has gone beyond the everyday responsibility and desire to improve the earth, and moved into the realm of creating aesthetically intriguing architectural features in your home. Getting your architectural eco-friendly on can be an exciting way to help improve the environment while sprucing up your home. SPRING 2012 I n Exposed wood beams: Wood isn’t just for the cottage anymore. A few wood accents in your home can contribute to the sleek elegance of a modern look or warm up a traditional space. The use of wooden beams as an architectural statement has been growing in popularity over the past several years. Not only do wooden beams create a beautiful contrast of light and dark on your ceiling, they bring warmth and interest to an ordinarily plain space; ceilings (unless you’re thinking of the Sistine Chapel) rarely function as a focal point in a room, yet adding rich wooden beams can make your ceiling pop. Depending on how the beams are laid, they can highlight the natural architecture of a room (vaulted ceilings, for example) or create architectural interest where there may be none. You can play with type of wood and colour to create different effects – darkly stained wood on a pure white background invokes drama through contrast; pale blonde wood makes a room seem open and airy; etc. Using wood to accent your ceiling is also a chance to recycle. Re-using wood that has been taken from old barns or houses can be a beautiful and responsible choice. The rustic look of barn wood adds a spot of charm to a modern setting. Whatever the style choice, incorporating wood into your home is sure to increase the aesthetic value and give it a touch of exterior vitality. Living walls: Sometimes called green walls, biowalls, or vertical gardens, living walls are vegetative structures designed to live indoors – literally, they are a wall of foliage. They are popular in urban buildings but have been making their way into the residential market due to their visual intrigue and environmental benefits. Their ability to support a wide variety of flora make living walls a unique architectural feature that can be used to represent your particular tastes. Not only are they aesthetically pleasing, they act as natural air purifiers – reducing dust in the air and contributing to the conversion of oxygen. Commercial spaces incorporate living walls to bring a little of the great outdoors inside and the same concept can apply to residential spaces. Plus, they are easier to maintain than traditional houseplants; living walls commonly use drip irrigation systems to supply water to the wall so they do not require manual watering. They are often constructed with a fibre (normally felt) mat attached to a frame wherein the plant materials grow, although it is also common to use modular mediums where a frame is created to hold blocks of growing materials. The mat system is more slender than the modular system, but the blocks are better supported and allow for more customization. The possibilities with living walls are endless and, most importantly, they benefit both your style and your health. Green roofs: Similarly to living walls, green roofs are commonly found on commercial buildings but are starting to be seen residentially. Not to be mistaken with a roof-top garden, green roofs are a layer of vegetation grown on top of a water membrane separating the structure of your roof and the open air; specifically, the structure of a green roof is a layer of growing material atop a layer of stones set on top of the water membrane. Installing a green roof will undeniably add character to your home, but they also offer a number of other benefits that will generally improve your quality of life and the overall value of your home. Green roofs act as natural insulators and therefore make your home more energy efficient. They control water flow and decrease the risks of leakage and flooding – just like vegetation that grows on the ground, green roofs absorb water then send it straight back into the atmosphere. No hassle, just a lush layer of foliage that makes your home both aesthetically pleasing and eco-friendly. Indoor water features: Water features have long been considered a relaxing and beautiful addition to any backyard. So, why not bring that sense of tranquility indoors? Indoor ponds can be built to create a focal point for your house (and not just for the purpose of housing your goldfish). Much like traditional backyard features, indoor ponds, waterfalls and fountains can be designed to suit any style. Playing with types of stone, different levels, and additions of foliage create an outdoor space that you can enjoy any time of year. Making eco-friendly choices in our everyday lives is not merely a fad, and neither is bringing green features into your home. The possibilities for customization are virtually limitless, meaning you can create a green space that is entirely your own. Adding green architectural features to your home is a sustainable choice both for the environment and for style. RAFIH STYLE MAGAZINE 63 coming soon zoom zoom It was time to take a stand. RAFIH STYLE MAGAZINE 65 24 47 RAFIH STYLE ADVERTISEMENT GOING ON 4 DECADES OF REAL ESTATE EXCELLENCE 1980’s 1990’s 2000’s TODAY Marco D’Antonio, Sales Representative Marco D’Antonio has spent over half of his 47 years in the real estate business and has seen the many market changes throughout the 80s, 90s, 00s, and now moving into the 10s. But, as he creeps up to 24 years at Remo Valente Real Estate, he is far from burnt out. He remains active in the community – playing soccer three times a week, bowling, and golfing – and really enjoys getting to know people on a personal level. “I meet most of my clients outside of a professional setting, he says.” I like to get out there and meet new people regardless of whether business will come from it or not.” After finishing a program at St. Clair College that included two years in media and advertising, Marco wrote his real estate exam and began working with Valente at just 23 years of age. “I’ve always thought of the relationship with my broker as a marriage,” says Marco. “You have to work through the ups and downs, but when it’s a good fit, there is no need to go anywhere else. I pride myself on having a strong foundation and longevity in my real estate career” His hands-on approach to real estate means that clients can talk to him directly anytime they need to. They can feel secure that their real estate needs will be looked after. “Buying and selling a home can be a very emotional process and it can be easy to throw logic and caution out the window, Marco relates.” I try to be there for my clients as much as possible and put their best interests above all else.” As a real estate agent, taking on the trusted task of buying or selling a homeowner’s most prized possession is a challenging and detailed When selling a home, Marco makes it a priority to be there from process. For Marco D’Antonio, who consistently ranks within the top the start to finish: “I don’t just put a sign on the front lawn and wait 10 producers at Valente Real Estate, this has come with ease. for someone to call. I work with clients on staging so that their home is in the best sellable condition and also market the property When the business does come, Marco makes every buyer and seller extensively while closely monitoring the activity to prevent the his top priority. listing from going stale.” SPRING 2012 CLIENT TESTIMONIAL “I was looking to buy my first home and was referred to Marco by a co-worker. Marco was very knowledgeable about the market and knew the start to finish process of buying a home. I felt like he educated me on what to look for and what to look out for when buying my home. He helped me make the right decision instead of making the decision for me.” - Erik DeJonge, first time home buyer “I have procured Marco’s services for my last two home purchase/sales. Everything about Marco, from his personal attitude to his vast knowledge of how real estate works in the practical world created a stress free experience in what can often be an agonizing event. It doesn’t take long to realize that at the top of his priority list is the satisfaction of his clients, and he achieves this with the utmost of integrity and professionalism. I couldn’t imagine selecting anyone else for future real estate sales or purchases.” Marco continues: “I try to coach and educate the buyer so they can choose what is good for them and make an informed and educated decision as opposed to me telling them what home to purchase. It’s as exciting for me as it is for the buyer when they find the right home. I feel the same joy and happiness they feel, and to me, that is success.” Marco believes that the support of fellow agents is also the key to success. “It’s important for me to have a positive rapport with my co-workers and competitors. Many of my competitors have become good friends over the years and I look forward to working with them time and time again. Having a good working relationship with realtors from other companies can make it beneficial in the end for my buyers/sellers.” Recently, Marco worked with Bill Hess of Vision Realty, an agent who has been in the business for 10 years and is an active board member for the Windsor Essex-County Real Estate Board. - M.W. Hitchcock “Marco and I worked on a deal recently and he was a pleasure to work with,” says Hess. “He understood my job representing the buyers and we were able to successfully make the deal work for both parties. There were a few unexpected hiccups along the way, and Marco handled everything very professionally. There are not too many realtors who would have been able to put that deal together. He is an extremely top notch agent, and I look forward to working with him again.” Clients love working with Marco and his great personality. His colleagues refer to him as a compassionate agent who really cares about his clients, and he always remains a consistent top producer year after year. “I really feel blessed and thankful”, Marco concludes, “that this profession has not only enabled me to be successful but also has allowed me to be involved in some families’ most important life decisions.” Remo Valente Real Estate (1990) Limited Tel: 519-966-7777 Cell: 519-818-2390 Email: [email protected] www.windsorhomesales.net RAFIH STYLE MAGAZINE 67 SPRING 2012 Jennings RAFIH STYLE ADVERTISEMENT Furniture & Design If you expect to walk into Jennings Furniture & Design to find the same variety of conservative furniture that has covered the store for the last 127 years, you are in for quite a surprise. RAFIH STYLE MAGAZINE 69 RAFIH STYLE tech & innovation MATE By Rhys Trenhaile B.SC. (HONS), L.L.B, Manor Windsor Realty LTD. Brokerage your home Most homeowners who are looking to increase the value of their property think first of traditional routes, such as building a conservatory or renovating the attic. However, there is another, more interesting way to add value to your house – home automation. SPRING 2012 Home automation is an affordable way to not only add value to your home, but also help reduce energy costs – at the simple click of a button you can control everything from lights to heating, security to audio systems. In addition, a professionally installed home automation system will also “future proof” your property, laying the groundwork for you to integrate new technology and devices in the future. Even if you start with just a lighting control system, for example, you could add other systems, such as heating control or multi-room audio, at a later date. Research suggests that buyers will pay a significant price premium for the incorporation of such technology into their homes. Interestingly, this price bump applies not just to high-income earners – it has broad market appeal across a wide range of demographics. “A well designed home automation system can provide carbon reduction and money saving benefits right from the start.” So, what is involved in a standard home automation system? Typical users will be able to control their home cinema, lighting, heating, security, and multi-room audio systems – all through one user friendly control panel that can be operated though the sorts of devices that most people already have in their homes, such as an iPhone or iPad. All of this is much less expensive than you might imagine. The growth in smart technology means that it has become more affordable and accessible than ever before, with a basic home automation installation costing a fraction of what it did as little as five years ago. SPRING 2012 ask the expert Esteem medical esthetics Liposonix ® ANSWERS TO PATIENTS’ FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS What is the Liposonix treatment? The Liposonix treatment is a nonsurgical, non-invasive fat reduction treatment that uses high-intensity focused ultrasound energy (HIFU) to permanently destroy fat cells. How long have Liposonix treatments been available? The Liposonix treatment has 10 years of research and testing behind its development. It has a well-defined safety profile during and after treatment with very good patient satisfaction. Treatments have been available in Europe, Japan, and Canada for several years. It has been available in the US starting in January 2012. How does it work? The Liposonix treatment uses high-intensity focused ultrasound energy. It is the same energy source as diagnostic ultrasound, but it is designed to very precisely target specific areas with high energy to destroy fat cells. How long is the treatment? Typically, a Liposonix treatment of the abdomen and flanks is completed in about one hour. This may vary depending on the treatment area and your specific needs. How many treatments will I need? The fat is permanently destroyed in just a single treatment. Multiple treatments can be done as long as there is at least one inch of fat present. Will this treatment leave saggy folds in my skin? This is unlikely. The Liposonix treatment does not produce the saggy skin that you often find with surgical liposuction procedures. Will the treatment leave an uneven or lumpy looking result? Unlike many liposuction procedures, the Liposonix treatment produces smooth results due to its unique, advanced delivery technology. No cases of uneven or lumpy results have been reported. Who can benefit from a Liposonix treatment? The Liposonix treatment is ideal for active, healthy individuals who have at least 1 inch or 2.5 cm of fat to lose in their abdomen or flanks. It is non-invasive, so it is a great solution if you have stubborn fat but don’t want to have surgery. What parts of the body does the Liposonix procedure treat? At this time liposonix is indicated for the abdomen, love handles, and saddlebags. RAFIH STYLE HEALTH & BEAUTY By Dr. Donna Jezdic, M.D. Medical Director Medical Esthetics Canada’s largest provider of Restylane® What kind of results can I expect? Although results vary, clinical studies have shown average waistline reduction was about one dress or pant size (1 inch or 2.5 cm reduction). Aesthetic outcomes have been very good for those that have maintained a healthy lifestyle after the procedure. When do the results appear, and how long do they last? Most people see maximum results in 8 to 12 weeks. This is how long it takes for the body to naturally metabolize the destroyed fat tissue. The targeted cells are permanently destroyed, but surrounding fat cells can grow - the best way to maintain your results is to maintain a healthy lifestyle. What will I look like immediately after the procedure? Since the treatment is non-invasive, there is little to no downtime, so you can resume your regular activities right away. Does it hurt? As with most aesthetic treatments, some patients may experience mild discomfort. During treatment, you may feel cold, prickling, tingling, warmth, mild discomfort, or pain. After treatment, you may have temporary redness, mild bruising, discomfort, and swelling. To increase your comfort, our staff will assess and determine what pain management, if any, is necessary for you. Who performs the procedure? Our staff has been properly trained on the Liposonix treatments. In this office the procedure is performed by our technicians after initial consultation with the physician. Can I get a Liposonix treatment instead of liposuction? The Liposonix treatment can help you lose one dress or pant size without surgery, but it won’t produce the same dramatic fat reduction associated with surgical liposuction. Can I get a Liposonix treatment if I’ve already had other procedures? If you have had surgery or have scars in the treatment area, Liposonix may not be right for you. We encourage you to come in for a consultation so we can talk about your specific situation. How much does the Liposonix procedure cost? The cost depends on the area or areas you’re having treated. A consultation is recommended at which point we can give you a more precise idea of the cost. Is there a website where I can go to learn more? Yes. If you would like to visit our website, the address is www.esteem.md. If you’d like to visit the Liposonix website, the address is www.liposonix. com.
