Balancing work, family and other activities can be overwhelming. This is just a reminder that it is especially important to take care during this time of year. Here are some suggestions to beat the holiday blues: Take time to care for yourself by eating right and getting plenty of sleep. Exercise (as little as 20 minutes per day) can make you feel 100% better. Make plans to spend time with people you enjoy. Use moderation in all things. Don’t agree to do more than you can. Allow yourself to grieve, if necessary, during this time. Many people remember losses over the holidays. Allow time for yourself. The YMS Counseling Staff would like to wish you a Happy Holiday Season! YMS School Counselors would love to hear your questions, concerns or comments: Students last name A-K: Ms. Cove 458-8288 Students last name L-Z: Ms. Merlitti 458-6154 Christmas In The Park Adopt-A-Family The Annual Christmas In The Park will be held on Saturday, December 3. The parade will begin at 9:30 am, starting at Yelm Cinemas and proceeding through town to Yelm City Park. The YMS Band will perform at 3:00 pm and Choir will be performing at 3:30 pm. For many years, the 9th grade Leadership Class has participated in the Adopt-A-Family program here at YMS. Staff and students donate to local families for the holidays. This year all three Leadership classes will be participating. Ms. Robillard’s 9th grade, Mr. VanVeen’s 8th grade and Ms. Nelson’s 7th grade classes will be coordinating the collection of toys and clothing and delivering them to Yelm Community Services. Join community members, school staff and students as they kick off the holiday season! Collections will begin on November 28 and end on December 14. 2 & YMS Varsity Football The YMS Varsity Football team finished their season with a 5 and 1 record. Leading the team offensively was Brian Rochester who scored 13 times, including two kick-off returns for a touchdown. Daylon Matthews and Devante Pearson did a great job running the offense at quarterback. Strong blocking by Nick Barckley, Holden Miller, Cole Couthran and Ricky Alvarez allowed our offense to score 50 more points in two different games. Defensively, Gabe Krizan was a difference maker on the line as nobody could run up the middle against us. Linebacker Elijah Gormley was named team MVP for his strong tackling. Kaleb Smith was named most inspirational as he led by example on the field. Travis Fritz and Jake Pickerel were named most improved. Chris Thomas and Thomas Munoz won the PRIDE award for their hard work and dedication this season. Students of the Month for November—Integrity YMS Honors you for consistently displaying integrity. Whether completing class work or interacting with teachers or peers, you act with honesty. You take ownership for your mistakes and demonstrate a strong sense of values. Most ear infections start after a cold. Your body fights the cold virus. The tube between the ear and the throat may swell and close up. Then fluid builds up in the ear. Pressure also builds up and causes pain. The fluid in the ear can last for several weeks. Monday, December 5 Parent Booster Meeting 6:00 pm There are different kinds of ear infections. Cold viruses are the most common cause of ear infections. Bacteria can grow in the fluid trapped in the ear. Bacterial infections can cause pain, fever, dizziness and ringing in the ears. In some cases the pressure can damage the eardrum. Your health care provider may treat this kind of infection with an antibiotic. Antibiotics are used to kill bacteria. Wednesday, December 7 Late Start - School Begins at 8:30 Thursday, December 8 Band Concert 7:00 pm @ YHS/PAC Friday, December 9 Teen Night 7:00 - 9:00 pm Young children get more ear infections because they get more colds. Also, the tube between the ear and throat is smaller and more easily blocked. Many children have fluid in the middle ear for as for as long as two months after a cold. They do not always need antibiotics. Tuesday, December 13 D & F Progress Reports Mailed Home Choir At Easthaven & Rosemont Wednesday, December 14 Late Start - School Begins at 8:30 9th Choir Concert YHS/PAC 7:00 pm Most ear infections will clear up on their own. Talk with your health care provider about whether you need an antibiotic. Taking antibiotics when they are not needed may harm you by creating stronger germs. Antibiotics don’t kill viruses, so they won’t make a cold go away any faster. It is best to take antibiotics only when needed. If your provider gives you antibiotics, always finish the entire prescription—the last few pills kill the toughest germs. Friday, December 16 Activity Schedule Ugly Sweater Day Staff vs Students Cage Ball Monday, December 19 Through Monday, January 2 NO SCHOOL - Winter Break The best way to prevent infections is to wash your hands. Viruses are spread when you touch your hands to your mouth, nose and eyes. Washing your hand often with soap and warm water will help keep viruses from entering your body. When blowing your nose, blow gently. 5 E m e r g e n c y We a t h e r It is that time of the year again when wind, snow or other weather conditions affect our schools. Here is some helpful information in case there are changes in our school day. 1. 2. 3. Most informational calls are made during the evening hours, but some last minute school change calls are made early in the morning. Informational calls would consist of Teen Night reminders, Conference Reminders, NO Late Start reminders, etc. School change calls would include closures due to weather conditions, 2 hour emergency late start due to road and weather conditions, or other emergencies at YMS. The school change calls are very important, so it is necessary that you keep your main phone number up-to-date in the YMS office. If you have not been receiving calls this year please contact the YMS office at 360-458-3600 and verify what number we have been calling. 65
