Spring/Summer 2015 Vol. 25 Issue 1 WAIFarer Official Newsletter of Whidbey Animals’ Improvement Foundation Page 2 Page 3 Page 4 Page 6 Notes from WAIF’s executive director New shelter update Get ready for this year’s Spring Fling! Learn about Mary Jo Adams in our Volunteer Spotlight Happy Beginning! Talk about a Happy Beginning! Adopters JW and Nancy Lyon recently sent us an update on their WAIF adoption of Picasso (formerly Pistachio). Upon relocating to Ashland, OR, who would have thought Picasso was a star in the making? The following is an update from the Lyons and we couldn’t wait to share it with our WAIFarer readership: Picasso is a Great Pyrenees adopted in 2011 from an animal shelter on Whidbey Island in Washington state. He lives in Ashland with a lab mix named Bogart and Myrtle, a turtle. In addition to keeping the couch warm, Picasso goes to the dog park, digs in the perennial border and loves to eat brie. He is best known for winning the prestigious “Looks Most Like Your Owner” award at Wag ‘n’ Walk, Whidbey Island, 2012. The paragraph above is the bio for Picasso in the playbill for Oregon Shakespeare Festival’s 2014 season. In case you have never been to the Oregon Shakespeare Festival in Ashland, Oregon, consider making plans to attend! The 2014 season had approximately 400,000 people attending 11 productions, one of which was Two Gentlemen of Verona by William Shakespeare. The festival’s budget is over $30,000,000 annually. Picasso auditioned for the role of “Crab” in Two Gentlemen of Verona and was selected out of 12 competing dogs. He never missed a show at the Elizabethan outdoor theater, which seats 1,200. There were 36 shows, two previews, four dress rehearsals and many rehearsals plus a cameo appearance in another production, Cocoanuts. Picasso is a “love sponge” and the Two Gentlemen of Verona cast loved on him between scenes. Adoption Profile PERCY NOTES from Charlie Where Were You 25 Years Ago? I was in my first year of marriage, no kids, no pets, working in the nonprofit world in the social services field in Kansas City area. While I was blissfully going about my work and home life half a continent away, a small group of residents on Whidbey Island were busily planning and working on an idea to find a better way for the island to treat its lost and abandoned dogs, rather than have them wait five days behind a chain link fence, hoping their owner showed up in time. WAIF Executive Director Charles Vreeland and Snickers 5 Twenty-five years later, WAIF has saved over 22,000 companion animal lives (dogs and cats) on Whidbey Island. And, during this time, WAIF has maintained an average Live Release Rate of over 90%. 6 Later this year, we will be moving into a new shelter to begin our second 25 years of service on the island. With that “New Start,” the challenge will be to develop sustainable services for animals in that expanded space. It is one thing to finally achieve a comfortable, safe and quiet place for homeless animals, quite another to meet and sustain this new resource for the welfare of companion animals and the community. Tribute Donations Animal Profile KAY Volunteer Spotlight: Mary Jo Adams 7 Adoption Profile ROSIE Adoption Profile DARTANIAN 8 Save the Date for Wag ‘n’ Walk! Our Mission: To create a community in which animals are treated with compassion and respect and where no companion animal goes unwanted. www.waifanimals.org I invite you to visit our website and review our “About Us” section that describes WAIF. In addition to our mission statement, you will find our Vision which contains five values we hold most dear. The fourth value in that list best describes how we will continue to be successful in the next 25 years of service to animals on Whidbey Island: Community – WAIF’s greatest strength is the community’s passion, commitment, and generosity. People working together for the animals is the heart and soul of WAIF. May we continue to work together, side by side, as we enter the next part of our journey on behalf of animals! WAIF is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization and registered as a charity in the state of Washington. WAIF Board of Directors Bob Rupp, President Dawn Ritter, Vice-President Cindy Wilbert, Treasurer John Thompson, Secretary Merritt Atwood Deborah Jones John Rohrer 2 WAIF Lead Staff Charles Vreeland, Executive Director Shari Bibich, Shelter Manager Claire Creighton, Capital Campaign Development Director Cinnamon O’Brien, Development & Communications Manager Mary Anna Cummings, Oak Harbor Thrift Store Manager Ampy Wilson, Freeland Thrift Store Manager Bobby Bryant, BaRC Re-tail Manager Tisa Seely, Volunteer & Outreach Coordinator Doug Bartleson, Database Administrator NEW SHELTER UPDATE Through wind storms, power outages, and downpours typical of Washington weather, the construction of WAIF’s new shelter has remained right on schedule. Now with spring around the corner, things are looking even brighter! We’ve come a long way since our July groundbreaking of last year. Starting with the pouring of the foundation to the installation of the roof – things are taking shape and we couldn’t be more excited about the future and what it means for homeless pets and the community! On track to a late summer/early fall move-in date, we continue to raise funds. In fact, Petco Foundation recently contributed $25,000 to our New Shelter Building Fund. “The Petco Foundation investment in WAIF’s new shelter gets us that much closer to realizing our dream of serving the homeless pet population in a modern facility. For more than ten years, not only has WAIF been working toward a facility serving companion animals in a healthy environment, but also focusing on building a facility that will enhance our services to the public and those seeking WAIF’s help. Receiving this grant from the Petco Foundation strengthens our commitment to the local community who care about the homeless pet population,” states Charles Vreeland, WAIF executive director. With approximately $500,000 left to raise, one of our frequently asked questions is, “I already donate to WAIF. Doesn’t a portion of my donation go to the New Shelter Building Fund?” Our New Shelter Building Fund is actually a restricted fund. Unless otherwise noted, donations that come in go directly to daily animal care and program operations. Raising funds for the new shelter is a separate endeavor altogether and is considered a capital campaign. What is a capital campaign? It typically is a time-constrained effort PanoramiC Front view Lobby to raise money, outside of operations, for a capital asset (such as construction for a new building) or a special project. WAIF is very fortunate to have supporters who see the extraordinary need in building a future for homeless pets. Going above and beyond with their donations to operations, people have generously stepped up with new shelter donations to see reality take hold after so many years. It’s not too late to help fund the construction of the new shelter. A donation envelope is included where you can note where you would like your donation directed. You can also make a contribution online. Just visit us at www. waifanimals.org/new where you can also follow the construction progress of the new shelter by viewing our photo gallery. This is an exciting time for WAIF and we want you to be part of it on behalf of the homeless pet population! 3 "Spring is in the air!" It’s time once again for the 12th Annual “Spring Fling” Gala Auction & Gourmet Dinner, WAIF’s biggest annual event. This year is an extra special year as it’s WAIF’s 25th Anniversary! You’re invited to join us on Saturday, May 30, 2015, at Useless Bay Golf & Country Club, for an exciting evening of champagne, a three-course gourmet dinner with wine and hundreds of magnificent items up for auction. Bid on silent and live auction items including fabulous getaways, wine & spirits, dog & cat items, gift cards, unique experiences, services, art, jewelry, gift baskets, tickets, everyday useful items and much, much more Would you like to help make this another great event? Consider becoming a sponsor or donating an item, service or experience to be auctioned off to benefit the homeless cats and dogs of Whidbey Island. Proceeds from Spring Fling help provide the necessary funding for the continued operation of WAIF’s many animal and community assistance programs. To receive additional information, become a sponsor, make a donation or receive an invitation, contact Dawn at [email protected] or (360) 331-7736. continued from cover courtyard between the theaters is called “the Bricks” and after the shows many theatergoers hang around for a while. During this time we would meet the “dog wrangler” at the service entrance and walk across the Bricks to go home. Audience members would greet Picasso with hugs and kisses, take “selfies” and ask us questions like, “How did you train him to yawn right on cue?” or “How do you get him to drool like that?” Our answer - “Work, lots of work.” We are thankful to WAIF for taking such good care of Picasso while in their care. He has become both an ambassador for shelter dogs and a theater star. Stay tuned for future reports of his adventures as Therapy Dog. 4 Percy Last March, Percy arrived at WAIF as a stray. He’s a handsome boy who’s only too eager to please. WAIF staff and volunteers find him to be very sweet and gentle. He likes to be the center of attention and would thrive in a household where he is the only pet. A trim and good looking pup, he is well behaved and seems to know basic commands, along with nice leash manners. You can visit with Percy at our shelter in Coupeville during our adoption hours of Wednesday- Sunday, 12pm-4pm. Sophie has since been adopted while Kay waits patiently for her forever home. Kay is a beautiful white cat with black markings and is talkative, energetic and playful. She is rather afraid of some dogs and takes time to adjust to being around them. Kay is six years old and currently resides at our Oak Harbor Cat Adoption Center. See if she’s a match for you during our adoption hours of Wednesday-Sunday, 12pm4pm. You can view Kay’s profile at: bit.ly/waifkay Short on cash but long on heart? Leave a legacy! If you have mentioned WAIF in your estate plans, please let us know. We would love the opportunity to thank you now! A vast majority of photos you see in our newsletters, website, and most everything WAIF-related have been taken by our intrepid volunteer photographer Mary Jo Adams. We recently found Mary Jo crouching in the Coupeville cat adoption room, waiting patiently for that special shot. “The dogs will really look at you, whereas the cats don’t care all that much,” she affirms with a teasing grin. For Adams, her passion is to digitally capture the uniqueness and personality of each individual animal to make it easy for people to adopt. Spending time at WAIF (she consistently visits every WAIF location islandwide!) has been a good fit for over 19 years. “I have always liked animals. Of course, we’ve always had pets so I guess I have a soft spot in my heart for them,” says Adams. She adds, “When I first started volunteering, there were some other really wonderful volunteers that set such a great example: it’s people like Ron Kerrigan, Ardeth DeVries, Joan Simpson (who was a volunteer then), and Barb Carlin. I think most of them are still doing things for WAIF right now. Superstars is a good word for them.” For many volunteers, including Adams, it is impossible not to help out. “I’ve done about everything for WAIF. When I started, I was cleaning cat cages, and walking dogs. I’ve mowed the grass, painted walls, helped out at booths, fostered litters of kittens and a couple of dogs…just a little bit of everything,” she recalls fondly. In addition to her volunteerism at the shelter, Mary Jo Adams brings work home with her. Right now her family includes Jada the cat, a year-long WAIF resident, whom she adopted from the Freeland Cat Cottage. “She seems to be doing great,” smiles Adams, “she’s a wonderful cat!” Volunteering is a good way to encourage a lifetime of community service; you learn the importance of kindness, responsibility and how even one person can make a difference – a person like Mary Jo Adams. continued from page 5 Weston & Carolyn Byng - IMO Eileen Brown C - Sally & Tom Cahill - IMO Max, Andy & Terri Campbell - IMO Richard Thomas, Gayle Carlson - IMO Jersey, Glen Carter - IMO Jeremy Carter, Kathleen Caylor - IMO Angus & Nellie, Marilyn Caylor - IMO My Bobby, Marylee Clement - IMO Lorraine Arthur, Peggy & Bob Concannon - IMO Richard Thomas, Mary & Clarence Conkey - IMO Ron Davis & Bill Moore, Billie Cook - IMO Katy, Monte Correll - IMO Lorraine Arthur, Martha Corson - IMO Richard Thomas, Denise Couser - IMO Misty & Teddy, Kurt & Monique Crigger - IMO Richard Thomas, Marcus & Nadine Cushway - IMO Eileen Brown D - Joan Daley - IMO Star, Sadie & Chondi, Homer Davenport - IMO Martini, Sandra & Stan Day - IMO Dr. Ed Diamond, Patsey Del Sonno - IMO Lorraine Arthur, Elin Dimoff - IMO Dylan Canell, Jim & Bonnie Dinehart - IMO Delphine Hoover, Aimee Dixon - IMO Joshua Tyng, James & Marilyn Dobbins - IMO Tonya Gabrielli, Linda Dobbs & Marvin Seelye - IMO Josh Merwine, Robin & Doug Doucette - IMO Nica, Glenn Duncan & Nancy Luenn - IMO Molly, Kathy Dunn - IMO Clarice & Nuke E - James & 6 Becky Elias - IMO Tawnya Rasmussen, Janette Ellis - IMO Raymond O.
