VISION
AIDS Athens exists to
enhance and enrich the quality
of life for those living with HIV/
AIDS, as well as their friends,
families, and partners. The
organization also seeks to
effect a fundamental change in
society’s attitude toward persons
infected with HIV/AIDS.
HISTORY AIDS Athens was
founded by a group of Athens
residents who attended an AIDS
forum at the University of Georgia
in 1987. Non-profit 501(c)(3)
status was obtained two years later.
The organization has grown to serve
10 Northeast Georgia counties.

The panel of our first patient, Stephen Letzsch, was displayed. His panel reminded me of
AIDS Athens’ humble beginnings. After the 1987 University of Georgia’s forum on AIDS, the
organization was founded by a group of courageous Athens residents. These volunteers
launched what is now a 26 year journey, changing the lives of countless HIV positive families
and ending AIDS transmission in 10 counties.
The donors, staff, and board’s combined efforts have resulted in a highly respected non-profit
with increased programming staffed by 10 dedicated individuals serving over 400 individuals
and families each year. And, we continue to exceed every goal, objective, and grant deliverable.
Although many of our clients still struggle, we help by maximizing resources while standing
strong against budget cuts. This year, our partnership with The Athens Land Trust, created a
client garden. This garden, located behind our building, was planted and worked by HIVpositive individuals and supports the nutritional needs of our food bank. Our priority has always
been to help each of them achieve independence.
As this year begins, the Board of Directors is developing a new strategy to guide our
organization’s activities and programming for the next 3 to 5 years. We are pleased to
release this 2012–2013 Annual Report which will provide insights into our programming,
achievements, and how our community responded to the challenge. It has been a pleasure and
honor to serve this organization for the last 7 years.

This past year, AIDS Athens celebrated its 25th anniversary with a 3-day AIDS Memorial Quilt
Display. Along with hundreds, I stood at the opening ceremony remembering those lost to the
virus while at the same time celebrating our accomplishments.

The AIDS Athens Community CARE Garden began as a
collaboration between AIDS Athens and the Athens Land
Trust to enhance nutritional support for our clients.
Patrick Reilly, AIDS Athens’ Outreach Case Manager,
laid the groundwork for the garden and continues to
coordinate the program. Over the course of several
months, space for the garden was determined and
volunteers gathered, raised beds were built from reclaimed
lumber, and the CARE Garden Support Group was formed.
The CARE Garden at AIDS Athens is the newest garden in a
network of 35 community and school gardens throughout Athens
that were established by the Athens Land Trust with funding from a federal
grant from USDA’s National Institute of Food and Agriculture.
In addition to bringing fresh fruits and vegetables to diets, the CARE Garden
serves as a stage to introduce cooking classes and nutritional education, life
skills, social support, and empowerment. It is also a place to unwind and try
new things.

Each year, AIDS Athens commissions an audit of our finances by an independent accounting firm.
Last year 2011–2012, in order to coincide with federal grants, AIDS Athens changed our fiscal year
to July 1st–June 30th. Those financials reflected a 16 month operating year. This year 2012–2013
is a 12 month year from July 1, 2012–June 30, 2013.

HOUSING SUPPORT AGENCIES
This past year, Agora presented the Athens Fashion
Invasion. This fashion show featured clothing from
eight locally-owned stores – Heery’s, Flirt Fashions,
Dynamite Clothing, Whole: Mind.Body.Art, Frontier, Suska,
Community, Showpony, and Agora. The show also featured
hair and make-up by Mint Salon, Model Citizen Salon, City
Salon, Salon DM3, and Relic Salon, MAC Cosmetics and
Elijana Cosmetics. Thirty-seven local businesses
provided in-kind donations to raise money
for HIV/AIDS care and prevention.
DePalma’s in downtown Athens has been participating in
our Eat Local for Life event every year for over a decade.
Thank you DePalma’s (and Dave) and all our
restaurants for participating last Fall. We raised over
$6,000 for needed HIV/AIDS services and prevention.
Proceeds from the ticket sales were
