Introduction to Gustav
Schroede
Gustav Schroeder was born in 1861 near Berlin, which at the
time was part of the Kingdom of Prussia. While living in Berlin he trained in
hand engraving of dies, and later at the age of 20 he moved to the United States of
America. It was here where he would meet a man named Carl Schraubstädter of the Central
Type Foundry. He would remain with the Central Type Foundry until 1888. In 1889 he entered
into partnership with a man named Nicholas J. Werner. Together they founded “Schroeder & Werner” a
company that
specialized in commercial matrix engraving. However shortly thereafter in 1891 there partnership dissolved,
Shroeder moved to California. Gustav Schroeders typefaces straddle the Victorian, arts and crafts and art nouveau
eras. He has created over 50 typefaces in his lifetime.
History of the Typeface
The Eccentric typeface was designed by Gustav F. Schroeder in the year 1881. He created this typeface while working with Carl
Schraubstadter at Central Type Foundry. Eccentric is an all capital and narrow bodied typeface with monoline display face that
could be described as high waisted. With cross-bars and main junctures more than halfway up the
letterforms. Every letter except the W has a long legged appearance. Eccentric has a wide range of display uses from
playbills to fashion advertisements.
Eccentric & Art Nouveau
The Eccentric typeface was designed during the Art Nouveau era. The Art Nouveau era was an artistic movement between
1890 and 1905. Art Nouveau practiced in the fields of art and architecture. It is French and translate to meaning “new art”. It
is characterized by organic and plant motifs as well as other highly stylized forms. The organic forms often took the form of
violent curves called the whiplash effect. Its short success was a reaction against the late 19th century academic art and was
replaced by the development of 20th century modernist styles. The Eccentric typeface was designed
specifically to be used on posters, because Art Nouveau posters were prevalent and widely distributed. The style of
typography, or the art and of arranging letters, developed out of Art Nouveau style. While paintings and
architecture reflected the Art Nouveau style, its impact on decorative arts and graphic design, particularly
posters, made its influence more widespread and available. Art Nouveau posters advertised everything
from salad oil to theatrical shows. The curved linear patterns featured in the posters were a trademark of Art Nouveau style. With typography being an integral part of the poster design.
The typography of these posters displayed typical Art Nouveau characteristics with
flourishing, ornamental elements.

RESUME
Jolie and Pitt open up on-set about the difficulty of filming the
movie (which they did while on their real-life honeymoon last year).
Angeline said “When I wrote it, I never assumed we’d actually do it, so I
wrote with a certain kind of freedom,” Jolie reveals in the video.

Daughter Shiloh also appears on-set during the filming. »
or Jolie’s part, she’s one of a few women who’s managed to find consistent work in Hollywood—but only because she makes it happen
for herself. She wrote and produced her first two films, In the Land of Blood and Honey and Unbroken, and there’s no denying that
her star power lends her quite a bit of command. It’s hard to compare Angelina Jolie to a relatively unknown female director trying
to break into the industry, but a major takeaway is that she has undoubtedly had to work harder than her male competition.
She took the same all-encompassing approach to her latest, By the Sea, acting as a multi-hyphenate
in her quest to get the arty marital drama into theaters. The flick is an intimate look into a marriage on the
rocks, and one that, for all intents and purposes, would not be the same if it were directed by, say, her
husband Brad Pitt (who happens to star opposite Jolie). Angelina has often been hesitant to discuss the
hardships she’s faced as a woman in the industry for fear of turning focus away from her accomplishments,
but we’ll just let one simple fact about By The Sea speak for itself: It is the first time in Pitt’s nearly 30-year
career that he has been directed by a woman.
The other directors sharing Jolie’s release date this Friday are, though decidedly less flashy, certainly
as talented and accomplished. Jessie Nelson, who helms the family Christmas feature Love The Coopers
and has been a big name in movies for decades (with pivotal flicks like I Am Sam and Stepmom filling her
IMDB page), is a bit more vocal about the obstacles she’s faced. At a screening of her latest flick she shared
the disturbing way she broke into the industry: She was mistaken for a man. When she arrived to discuss
directing Whoopi Goldberg in Corrinna, Corrinna, the studio execs were shocked to find out that “Jessie”
wasn’t who they thought.

Angelina Jolie opens up about
working with Brad Pitt again
Love The Coopers is Nelson’s first directing gig in 13 years (she’s been spending her time writing
screenplays like Fred Clause), and she noted one positive shift in Hollywood: Reception. “It used to be for
women, if just one movie didn’t do well, she didn’t get another chance,” Nelson told the audience. “Which was
unfortunate, because trying and failing is how you learn as a director. I now get the feeling that women are no
longer being held to that.”
What the critics think about By The Sea
As disturbing as anecdotes like Nelson’s have been, the statistics are even scarier. Like the fact that
when Kathryn Bigelow received her Oscar nomination for The Hurt Locker in 2009, she was the first woman
in history to join the Best Director category. (And since then, it should be noted, no other woman has been
nominated). Or the fact that women only comprise 7% of directors on Hollywood’s biggest movies.

rad Pitt and Angelina Jolie Pitt are reuniting
on the big screen for the first time since Mr
& Mrs. Smith’s 2005 release. The couple’s new
film, By The Sea, was written and directed by
Jolie Pitt and chronicles an estranged husband and wife traveling through France in the
‘70s. The dark and dramatic film was shot in Malta
last year while Jolie and Pitt were on their real-life
honeymoon.»
The (slightly) good news is that scary math begets drastic measures. The Directors Guild has some
choice words for the industry’s lack of improvement when it comes to hiring female directors, and has set
out to hold studios accountable for their practices. The federal government has also chimed in with their
investigation into gender discrimination. But as many women in the thick of it will be quick to remind
everyone, a harsh statement here and there has never resulted in true progress.
Perhaps the best course of action? Good old-fashioned hard work and success. As frustrating as the
fact may be, the more women continue to kick ass in directing gigs—and bring in the big bucks to boot—
the more studios will realize that hiring a woman isn’t just good for gender equality, it’s good for the bottom
line. Take Elizabeth Banks. She took over behind the camera for Pitch Perfect 2 (Jason Moore helmed the
original) and guided the film to bring in a whopping $69 million dollars over opening weekend, breaking
first-time director box office records along the way. She’s already been tapped to direct the upcoming third
installment, signaling that (hopefully) her victory was too large to ignore.
By the sea
“By the Sea” follows an American writer named Roland (Pitt) and his wife, Vanessa (Jolie Pitt), who
arrive in a tranquil and picturesque seaside resort in 1970s France, their marriage in apparent crisis. As they
spend time with fellow travelers, including young newlyweds Lea (Laurent) and François (Poupaud), and
village locals Michel (Arestrup) and Patrice (Bohringer), the couple begins to come to terms with unresolved
issues in their own lives.
In its style and treatment of themes of the human experience, “By the Sea” is inspired by European
cinema and theater of the ’60s and ’70s. The two leads produced the film, which was executive produced by
Chris Brigham (“Inception”), Holly Goline (“Unbroken”) and Michael Vieira (“Unbroken”).“This is a story
about a relationship derailed by loss, the tenacity of love, and the path to recovery and acceptance,” Jolie Pitt
said. “It has been a privilege to explore these universal human experiences with such a generous and talented
cast and crew.”»
