Parc des Cèdres (Cedar Park) owes its name to its many cedar trees, which have
been planted by Georges Cuvier, friend of the Japy family. Other trees of over one
hundred years old adorn the park. Beautiful buildings can be found along the alleys:
the last castle, an orangery, stables and a hunting lodge.
The Fonteneilles neighborhood: a specific manufacturing site, the place where the
famous Japy typewriters were produced. It has an iconic building called
“Horseshoe”, referring to its U-shape.
SAINT-DIZIER-L’EVEQUE
The church (Historical Monuments since 1926) is home to the cenotaph of
Saint-Dizier, also called Pierre des Fous (Stone of the Insance), because people with
various mental illnesses would visit it. The vine was planted in 1995 with
Chardonnay, Pinot Auxerrois and Pinot Gris stems. At the hamlet of Val de Saint-Dizier,
behind the old wash house, a dressed-stone structure fed by a spring served as a
place for pilgrims ablutions; they had to wash their heads in each of the niches, with
their bare feet in tubs on the ground
Bure
Musée Japy (Japy Museum): This museum covers the history of the Beaucourt
industry from the end of the 18th century until now. The collections presented
witness to the genius of Frédéric Japy, precursor to the mass production
watchmaking industry. Tél. 03 84 56 57 52

Maison des Cariatides, dates back to 1577, served as a regular home
and a courthouse. The Caryatids represent Justice in the center, two rich and two
poor, thus signifying justice for all.
The house of the today’s City Hall has been occupied by the Feltin family, of
which one member became Cardinal Archbship of Paris (Maurice Feltin, 1883 –
1975). Backing on the wall, it was constructed in 1581 on the site of a medieval
building. In the turret with the spiral staircase, you can see a plate bearing two
hammered insignia with the date of construction and the slogan of the builder
SEQVITVR FORTVNA LABOREM – Work creates richness. Notice also the beautiful
wooden gallery outside.
One of the loveliest dwellings in the town, the Maison à Tourelle, dates back to

The countryside of Sundgau is charcterized by woods and ponds. The
Fourchu and Verchat ponds are wonderful spots for fishing and
pleasant for strolls. The Grille pond is home to plant and animal species
protected nationally and throughout Europe, and provides an
information board for walkers. In the towns of Courcelles, Réchésy and
Florimont, located on the Swiss border, visitors can view the
architectural style of frame houses, a design unique to Sundgau.

L’Eurovelo6 and francovélosuisse
A part of the Nantes-Budapest Eurovelo6 (European bike lane) crosses the
Territoire de Belfort for 10 km on the banks of the canal that connects the
Rhône to the Rhine between Bourogne and Montreux-Château. This route,
a true “Green Corridor” offers a quality route that extends east into the
Alsace until Mulhouse.
From the Eurovelo6, two possibilities to join Belfort: via the “Coulée verte”
alongside the canal “Haute-Saône” to Montbéliard or via the francovélosuisse,
a bicycle lane that connects Belfort and Porrentruy in Switzerland.

BERMONT
The small charming village of Franche Comté area. The church of St. Lawrence,
located on a rocky slope, is prominent on highway A36. On a structure dating
from perhaps the 12th century, the architect Charles GENTY rebuilt a church,
but kept the choir loft and the base of the steeple.
Belfort
From the Sun King to Denfert-Rochereau this city is at the heart of
French history. Protected by the Lion, a work of art from Bartholdi who is also
the creator of the Statue of Liberty, Belfort is still visible by its ramparts, which
were designed by Vauban. Inside the Citadel, the discovery walk allows you to
hike over moats in fortresses until you reach the Grand Souterrain (Great
Underground), transfigured by spectacular lighting. The History Museum has
devoted six of its rooms to Frédéric Auguste Bartholdi where sculptures,
sketches and photographs are displayed in order to promote the sculptor’s
connection to Belfort.
The Brisach Gate has been constructed in 1687 and embellished by Vauban to
honor Louis XIV. It’s the best entry to the city with its historical richness. Visit
Belfort, that’s also sauntering through the small charming narrow streets, feeling
the life of the Place d’Armes, admiring the colorful facades and the places full of
history.

Near the lake Malsaucy, the pond Veronne is a large expanse of water
exclusively for fishing. A route of 4 km (1.5 hours, accessible to all: walkers,

5
AUXELLES-HAUT
To commemorate the mobilization of the French forces of the Interior, a 15 km
hike called Down Memory Lane (“Chemin de la Mémoire”) tells the story of the
Haute Planche Underground and the long path towards liberation of northern
Franche-Comté (starting from the church).
THE SOUTHERN VOSGES
Come and explore the vast open spaces of the Southern Vosges, where
the ever-soothing, never monotonous green surroundings, from the pale
green of the meadowlands to the dark greens of the forest, are as perfect
for a spot of relaxation as they are for an exhilarating hike or a family
walk.
Then, of course, there is the strong blue presence of the region’s waters,
from its silent lakes and peat bogs to its gushing waterfalls, raging
torrents and indolent rivers, providing ample opportunity to indulge in
your favorite water sport or a spot of fishing.

The Fine Art collections of the City of Belfort are exposed in the ring-shaped
room of the Tower 41. The specific architectural design of the place divides the
150 works into five themes: allegories, religious paintings, nature, portraits and
a space dedicated to Camille Lefèvre, sculptor and painter. The Museum of
Modern Art, donated by Jardot, houses a prestigious collection of more than 100

GIROMAGNY
The boom of Giromagny dates from the end of the Middle Age and occurred due
to the use its silver, lead and copper mines by the Habsbourgs, who were the
Lords of Rosemont at the time. Mining activity continued until the 18th century.
The mining path lets you discover the remains of its erstwhile usage. A tour of
fountains and wash houses shows you the origins of the city’s quarters. It is
near twenty watering areas, which were resources coveted by neighboring
towns in the 18th century.

Weavings: this place is the oldest industrial site of the territory (a smelter of mines was
established here in 1565). In the middle of the 19th century, the Boigeol family developed

Long fought over, the Ballon d’Alsace is full of historical memories. The landmarks that made
up the border of 1871 between France and Germany are thus still visible. The statue of Joan
of Arc, inaugurated in 1909, symbolizes the connection between Alsace and France and the
monument honoring the mine sweeper, erected in 1952, recalls the sacrifice of some 600 men
killed in the Ballon region.

LAMADELEINE-VAL-DES-ANGES
The origin of the hermitage goes back to the 16th century. It thus bears the name
Lamadeleine des Broudes (The Brothers of Lamadeleine; bruder = brother in German). This
chapel was the worship space for the valley’s miners. In the 17th century, the chapel
became a pilgrimage site. The entry’s 16th century Gothic vault is preserved.

Belfort has maintained unparalleled traces of its glorious history, the
living proof of the towns strategic importance over the centuries. By
visiting the various sites and monuments, you will get a sense of the
vivacity of the city’s history. The Old Town, which has been entirely
renovated, is a myriad of narrow streets and charming squares. A place
for strolling casually, to take time out from it all to enjoy life. If there is
one feature that immediately attracts the attention of the visitors, it is the
colors of the faces of the houses.

Saints Peter and Paul church: a beautiful Roman church, from a priory founded
in the 12th century that was occupied by the Cluny monks. This priory owes its
founding to the legend of Saint Maimboeuf, murdered in the 8th or 9th century
near the “cold fountain”. In 1105, Ermentrude, countess of Montbéliard,
decided to found a priory in the community. Notice the three human heads on
the inside cornice and the three naves with rustic archways on large pillars. Two
tombstones from the 18th century appear at the entrance.
