Development of the A500 Adam Aircraft - AIAA Info
Development of the Adam Aircraft A500 Featuring Dennis Olcott VP Engineering, Adam Aircraft 19 April 2006 5:00 to 7:00 pm Location: Boeing Bldg. 33 Cafeteria Adam Aircraft, of Englewood Colorado, was founded in 1998 to design and manufacture advanced civil aircraft. They use computer-aided design, rapid prototyping, advanced manufacturing, and composite materials to quickly develop high performance aircraft. Their first offering is the twin engine A500. The A500 is a six place, center-line thrust twin engine executive class aircraft. The pressurized fuselage rests on a 40-ft. wing while twin booms support the distinctive horizontal tail. Leveraging NASA research, the A500 incorporates side-stick controls, single-lever engine controls, and automotive like warning sensors. The twin engines use a Full Authority Digital Engine Control (FADEC) to provide improved fuel consumption and longer range. Many Adam manufacturing and management techniques have been borrowed from non-aviation industries, such as the computer industry. CAD design, CFD validation, and virtual trade studies helped to rapidly refine the A500 design. Innovative work schedules of 12-hour shifts for 3 days, followed by 4 days off, have increased productivity and design maturation. Mr. Olcott will give a perspective of Adam Aircraft design, management techniques, and the A500 development. Adam Aircraft is now manufacturing the A500 and applying the lessons learned to develop the A700 twinjet version. Map Do Li n db er gh . vd Bl Cost/Tickets I-270 nn ell Blv I-170 d. About 20 Girl Scouts rotated through seven interactive aviation related topic areas. Girls covered aviation topics areas of: • Dynamic Forces of Flight • Navigating Maps, Terrain, and Airports • Weather Basics • Aviation Pen Pals • Airplane Controls-past, present, and future • Tower Talk and Communications • Career Exploration The workshop was fast paced and provided girls with an overview of how women can and do play a part in the vast world of aviation. From simply working for an airline or manufacturer, all the way to flying personally or professionally. The various interactive project areas encouraged girls to learn more about possible opportunities in aviation as they look to high school and beyond. At the conclusion of the day’s activities each girl received a Fly Girls badge and certificate. paper airplane contest Paper Airplane Contest trivia night Aerospace Trivia Night 29 April 2006 9 am to Noon Washington University Gym 1 & 2 • Airplane Construction • Time Aloft Contest • Distance Contest • Spot Landing • Prizes 29 April 2006 Doors Open At 6:00 p.m. Round 1 Begins 6:30 p.m. Sharp! Dave has been a long term member of the St. Louis Section and has served our section admirably in the past. There are a lot of St. Louis Section members that are serving AIAA on various national committees and technical committees. The nomination period for AIAA Technical Committees (TCs) will open on 1 August 2006 for terms starting in May 2007. Boeing employees will need the approval of your Department head to be nominated for a Technical Committee. Presently, there are sixty-six technical committees and the descriptions of their missions can be found on the AIAA national web site. The St. Louis Section of AIAA needs some new members and is planning a “New Member” drive at the April Dinner meeting. Anyone who brings a perspective new member will be eligible to win a prize. Stay tuned for more details. Additionally, the Technical Specialist committee is presenting our annual “Senior Design Project Presentations” on Wednesday April 26. This is where all the local University design teams present their design projects. We are planning to make this event “even more special” this year by inviting our local High School students to attend to give the students a flavor of aerospace employment opportunities. Frank Youkhana, Technical Specialist Meeting Chairman, is looking for volunteers to help with this meeting.
