LETCHWORTH GARDEN CITY
HERITAGE FOUNDATION
We are delighted to bring an exciting new programme of world
class arts and cultural events to the town. Letchworth has a thriving
arts scene with a vibrant local arts centre, a much loved art deco
cinema and a rich variety of workshops, exhibitions and cultural
events. With plans afoot this year to convert the Broadway Cinema
into a live theatre and a new arts centre scheduled to open in 2017,
we believe that an even busier arts and cultural programme will
add great value to the world’s first garden city.

WELCOME
Welcome to what I hope
is a terrifically exciting
programme of high
quality theatre, visual
art and music.
If you’re one of the many people who have tickets to Broadway
Cinema’s screening of War Horse, I recommend our own
production, The Table, on 7th of March at St Francis Theatre,
brought to you by the brilliant Blind Summit, featuring puppetry
every bit as magical as that of War Horse.
Our exciting visual arts exhibition, A Vision of Utopia in
collaboration with Digswell Arts Trust, turns the entire town
into a gallery with 11 new commissions linked to iconic and
historic Letchworth sites.
June sees the arrival of Ukrainian-British violist Maxim Rysanov
who performs in the Spirella Ballroom with the Russian violin
virtuoso Alexander Sitkovetsky, part of a longer term Artist
residency for a musician who has already graced some of the
world’s biggest classical music stages.
Finally, do look out for details of other creative activities taking
place across Letchworth during this period. These highlights are
listed on pages 22 and 23.
I hope there is something in the programme that interests you
and I look forward to seeing you at the events.
We’d like to hear
your views about our arts
and cultural events. Help us plan
future programmes by sharing
your views and ideas. Email us...

Mozart’s sublime tragic comedy offers boundless scope for directors,
and Kasper Holten has chosen it to follow his directorial debut of
Eugene Onegin.
He wants to shift the emphasis from Don Giovanni’s sex life into a
darker place, showing Giovanni’s womanising as an attempt to stave
off his own mortality. Each woman he seduces represents a life he
could have had.
Though it is a dark piece, Holten intends to handle it with a light touch
and he is working with a superb cast – Mariusz Kwiecien, one of the
world’s leading Don Giovannis, Alex Esposito, a fresh, vigorous
Leporello and acclaimed French soprano Véronique Gens.

Since its first performance at the National Theatre in 2007, War Horse
has become an international smash hit.
Based on Michael Morpurgo’s novel and adapted for the stage by Nick
Stafford, War Horse takes audiences on an extraordinary journey from
the fields of rural Devon to the trenches of First World War France.
Filled with stirring music and songs, this powerfully moving and
imaginative drama is a show of phenomenal inventiveness. At its heart
are astonishing life sized puppets by South Africa’s Handspring Puppet
Company, who bring breathing, galloping, charging horses to thrilling
life on stage.

Why a Vision of Utopia?
“The original Utopian vision of the town
was as a city of the future, enjoying the
benefits of both town and country. In
pursuing this vision, Letchworth was
endowed with some iconic places and
buildings which are central to the town’s
identity today.

House and Blind Summit present The Table
Moses is a cantankerous 3 man operated puppet with a cardboard
head… who lives on a table. Tonight he wants to tell you an epic
story about God and Moses, life and death, and puppetry…
on a table. But he gets easily distracted.
Like a cross between Tommy Cooper and Eddie Izzard
this table-top-puppet-philosopher-cum-stand-upcomedian is the funniest “piece of cardboard” you’ll
ever meet.
Just back from a sellout tour of the USA, the team
behind the 90 feet Voldemort in the London Olympic
Ceremony, brings you a 2 foot high puppet in an
unforgettable show.
WHY IT’S A MUST SEE
Puppet masters Blind Summit
will amaze you with their
wild humour and astounding
puppetry. If you like Tommy

Royal Opera House Live Cinema Season
First staged in St Petersburg in 1890, The Sleeping
Beauty is the pinnacle of classical ballet: a perfect
marriage of Petipa’s choreography and Tchaikovsky’s
music and a glorious challenge for every dancer on
stage. It is also The Royal Ballet’s signature work.
To mark the Company’s 75th birthday in 2006,
Monica Mason and Christopher Newton revitalised
its landmark 1946 production, which re-established
Petipa’s choreography as recorded by Imperial
12
Ballet régisseur Nicholas Sergeyev, to a scenario
and staging developed by Ninette de Valois herself,
founder of The Royal Ballet.
With Oliver Messel’s gorgeous original designs
wonderfully re-imagined by Peter Farmer, and
additional choreography by Anthony Dowell,
Christopher Wheeldon and Frederick Ashton, today’s
Sleeping Beauty not only captures the mood of the
original but shows that this is very much a living work
for The Royal Ballet, growing and changing with the
Company while celebrating its past.

A highly acclaimed award-winning show for children that uses
a unique blend of mime, puppetry, live and recorded music, and
animation to present an exploration of the next and oldest frontier:
the deep blue sea.
Seas have risen, billions have died. Alvin Sputnik is our only hope.
He must venture to the bottom of the ocean to find his wife’s lost
soul and save humanity.
The Adventures of Alvin Sputnik is a tiny tale set in the deepest dark
blue sea, of a solitary explorer with a heart as big as a whale. Direct
from sellout seasons in New York, Sydney, and Auckland this multi
award-winning piece of heartwarming “theatrical magic” (Sunday Mail)
is a one-man micro-epic about enduring love and the end of the world.
“…akin to a theatrical Wall-E” (New York Times).
WHY IT’S A MUST SEE
A gorgeous, compelling and
magical one man show by Tim Watts
which manages to create this amazing
deep sea world drawing in children
and adults alike. I’m thrilled to bring

Following his delightful full-length ballet Alice’s Adventures in
Wonderland, Christopher Wheeldon continues his highly successful
collaboration with designer Bob Crowley and composer Joby Talbot to
create his first ballet based on a Shakespeare play, the late romance
The Winter’s Tale.
The story follows the destruction of marriage through consuming
jealousy, the abandonment of a child, and a seemingly hopeless love.
Yet through remorse and regret – and after a statue comes miraculously
to life – the ending is one of forgiveness and reconciliation.
It is powerful material for ballet, with a story that allows for the portrayal
of intense emotions between and within the characters, and the
opportunity for the Company to create not just new central
characters but the whole world around them.

Following his production of Richard II in October 2013,
RSC Artistic Director Gregory Doran continues his
exploration of Shakespeare’s history plays with Henry
IV Parts I and II, an epic, comic and thrilling vision of
a nation in turmoil.
With his crown under threat from enemies both foreign
and domestic, Henry IV prepares for war. Having
deposed the previous king, he is only too aware of
the tenuousness of his position, and of the price to be
paid if he falters.
RSC Associate Artist Antony Sher returns to the
Company to play the infamous comic knight Falstaff. He
is joined by Jasper Britton as Henry IV and Alex Hassell
as Prince Hal. Jasper returns following his performance
as the Marquis de Sade in Marat/Sade (2011); Alex returns
to the RSC following his recent credits in A Midsummer
Night’s Dream, Cardenio and The City Madam.
As his father prepares to defend his crown, Prince Hal
is languishing in the taverns and brothels of London,
revelling in the company of his friend, the notorious
Sir John Falstaff. With the onset of the war, Hal and
Falstaff are thrust into the brutal reality of the battlefield,
where Hal must confront his responsibilities to family
and throne.

Following its smash-hit live broadcast in 2012, the National
Theatre production of The Curious Incident of the Dog in
the Night-Time returns to cinemas.
Based on the acclaimed novel by Mark Haddon, adapted
by Simon Stephens and directed by Marianne Elliott, The
Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time has been
hailed by The Times as ‘a phenomenal combination of
storytelling and spectacle’. Winner of 7 Olivier Awards in
2013, including Best New Play.
Christopher, fifteen years old, has an extraordinary brain –
exceptional at maths while ill-equipped to interpret everyday
life. When he falls under suspicion of killing Mrs Shears’
dog Wellington, he records each fact about the event in the
book he is writing to solve the mystery of the murder. But his
detective work, forbidden by his father, takes him on
a frightening journey that upturns his world.

the great Russian violin virtuoso Alexander Sitkovetsky and features
works by Bach and Mozart. Staged in the round in the Spirella

Pip, a seven year-old orphan boy, visits his mother’s grave. A frightening
encounter with an escaped convict begins a series of events that will
change his life forever.
Written by one of England’s greatest authors, Charles Dickens, Great
Expectations is the profound and complex story of Pip’s journey
through life. Some of his most memorable characters – the terrifying
Magwitch, Joe Gargery the kind and generous blacksmith, the eccentric
Miss Havisham, the cold and beautiful Estella, – are vividly brought to
life in this anarchic and joyful telling of this glorious tale.
Using Dickens’ original text (well, mostly!), David Mynne takes you on
a journey that brings you a ‘cast of thousands’ in a skilful, one-man
adaptation of this epic story.

King Henry’s health is failing as a second rebellion threatens to surface.
Intent on securing his legacy, he is uncertain that Hal is a worthy heir,
believing him more concerned with earthly pleasures than with the
responsibility of rule.
Meanwhile, Falstaff is sent to the countryside to recruit fresh troops.
Among the unwitting locals, opportunities for embezzlement and
profiteering prove impossible to resist as Falstaff gleefully indulges in
the businessof lining his own pockets.
As the King’s health continues to worsen, Hal must choose between
duty and loyalty to an old friend in Shakespeare’s heartbreaking
conclusion to this pair of plays.

This early Puccini masterpiece makes a welcome
return to Covent Garden after an absence of over 20
years, in a new production by Jonathan Kent under
the baton of Music Director Antonio Pappano.
The exciting Latvian soprano Kristine Opolais sings
the title role. A consummate Puccini soprano,
Opolais caused a sensation as Madama Butterfly in
2011, and with Manon Lescaut, the bold but
impressionable heroine, we will see a very different
side of her character. She is matched in star power
by Jonas Kaufmann as her lover, Des Grieux, and
Christopher Maltman as her cynical brother Lescaut.
This is a much anticipated new production, and Kent’s
vision of a young girl who faces temptation in the big
city will surely resonate with today’s audience.
