Letchworth has a thriving arts scene with a vibrant local arts centre, a much loved art deco cinema and a rich variety of workshops, exhibitions and cultural events. With plans afoot this year to convert the Broadway Cinema into a live theatre and a new arts centre scheduled to open in 2017, we believe that an even busier arts and cultural programme will add great value to the world’s first garden city. 4 WELCOME Welcome to what I hope is a terrifically exciting programme of high quality theatre, visual art and music. If you’re one of the many people who have tickets to Broadway Cinema’s screening of War Horse, I recommend our own production, The Table, on 7th of March at St Francis Theatre, brought to you by the brilliant Blind Summit, featuring puppetry every bit as magical as that of War Horse. Our exciting visual arts exhibition, A Vision of Utopia in collaboration with Digswell Arts Trust, turns the entire town into a gallery with 11 new commissions linked to iconic and historic Letchworth sites. June sees the arrival of Ukrainian-British violist Maxim Rysanov who performs in the Spirella Ballroom with the Russian violin virtuoso Alexander Sitkovetsky, part of a longer term Artist residency for a musician who has already graced some of the world’s biggest classical music stages. Finally, do look out for details of other creative activities taking place across Letchworth during this period. These highlights are listed on pages 22 and 23. I hope there is something in the programme that interests you and I look forward to seeing you at the events. We’d like to hear your views about our arts and cultural events. He wants to shift the emphasis from Don Giovanni’s sex life into a darker place, showing Giovanni’s womanising as an attempt to stave off his own mortality. Each woman he seduces represents a life he could have had. Though it is a dark piece, Holten intends to handle it with a light touch and he is working with a superb cast – Mariusz Kwiecien, one of the world’s leading Don Giovannis, Alex Esposito, a fresh, vigorous Leporello and acclaimed French soprano Véronique Gens. WAR HORSE (Theatre) Live showThursday 27 February SOLD OUT Recorded show Sunday 2 March, 13:30 Recorded show Monday 10 March, 19:30 Live broadcast at Broadway Cinema Certificate: PG Tickets: £10 for recorded shows. Based on Michael Morpurgo’s novel and adapted for the stage by Nick Stafford, War Horse takes audiences on an extraordinary journey from the fields of rural Devon to the trenches of First World War France. Filled with stirring music and songs, this powerfully moving and imaginative drama is a show of phenomenal inventiveness. At its heart are astonishing life sized puppets by South Africa’s Handspring Puppet Company, who bring breathing, galloping, charging horses to thrilling life on stage. 6 7 Turning Letchworth Garden City into an Art Gallery This exhibition will have residents and visitors seeing and experiencing familiar sites in Letchworth in new and exciting ways. Johann Arens Christina Byrant Mario Ercol Borza Miche Follano Why a Vision of Utopia? “The original Utopian vision of the town was as a city of the future, enjoying the benefits of both town and country. In pursuing this vision, Letchworth was endowed with some iconic places and buildings which are central to the town’s identity today. Rob Burton is a trustee of Digswell Arts and an art curator specialising in contemporary art and sculpture Chris Groombridge Nick Jeeves Perminder Kaur Maxine King Karen Picton Tina Reid Samara Scott The exhibition seeks to connect the utopian vision of the Garden City, with the town today by reimagining this ideology through a fake ‘archive’ of what could have been and of what might be in the future.” Rob Burton, Digswell Arts Trustee 9 10 PHOTOGRAPHER: LORNA PALMER THE TABLE: BLIND SUMMIT (Live Theatre) Friday 7 March, 19:00 at St Francis Theatre, St Francis College, Broadway, SG6 3PJ For ages 12+ Tickets: £14 including a glass of wine or soft drink; £12 concessions, £45 family ticket (two adults and two children) Buy tickets online at www.letchworth.com/artsandculture Letchworth Tourist Information Centre on 01462 487868 House and Blind Summit present The Table Moses is a cantankerous 3 man operated puppet with a cardboard head… who lives on a table. Tonight he wants to tell you an epic story about God and Moses, life and death, and puppetry… on a table. But he gets easily distracted. Like a cross between Tommy Cooper and Eddie Izzard this table-top-puppet-philosopher-cum-stand-upcomedian is the funniest “piece of cardboard” you’ll ever meet. Just back from a sellout tour of the USA, the team behind the 90 feet Voldemort in the London Olympic Ceremony, brings you a 2 foot high puppet in an unforgettable show. WHY IT’S A MUST SEE Puppet masters Blind Summit will amaze you with their wild humour and astounding puppetry. If you like Tommy Cooper, Russell Brand or Eddie Izzard, you’ll love this! “Blind Summit are the UK’s puppet Masters” The Guardian “Dazzling” THE SCOTSMAN “Astonishingly accomplished” THE TELEGRAPH “Beckett meets Tommy Cooper... It is also The Royal Ballet’s signature work. To mark the Company’s 75th birthday in 2006, Monica Mason and Christopher Newton revitalised its landmark 1946 production, which re-established Petipa’s choreography as recorded by Imperial 12 Ballet régisseur Nicholas Sergeyev, to a scenario and staging developed by Ninette de Valois herself, founder of The Royal Ballet. With Oliver Messel’s gorgeous original designs wonderfully re-imagined by Peter Farmer, and additional choreography by Anthony Dowell, Christopher Wheeldon and Frederick Ashton, today’s Sleeping Beauty not only captures the mood of the original but shows that this is very much a living work for The Royal Ballet, growing and changing with the Company while celebrating its past. ALVIN SPUTNIK (Live Theatre) Presented in collaboration with Letchworth Arts Centre Friday 21 March 2014, 16:00 at Letchworth Arts Centre For ages 8+ Tickets: £8; £5 children; £24 family ticket (two adults and two children) Buy tickets online at www.letchworth.com/artsandculture or call Letchworth Tourist Information Centre on 01462 487868 A highly acclaimed award-winning show for children that uses a unique blend of mime, puppetry, live and recorded music, and animation to present an exploration of the next and oldest frontier: the deep blue sea. Seas have risen, billions have died. Alvin Sputnik is our only hope. He must venture to the bottom of the ocean to find his wife’s lost soul and save humanity. The Adventures of Alvin Sputnik is a tiny tale set in the deepest dark blue sea, of a solitary explorer with a heart as big as a whale. Direct from sellout seasons in New York, Sydney, and Auckland this multi award-winning piece of heartwarming “theatrical magic” (Sunday Mail) is a one-man micro-epic about enduring love and the end of the world. “…akin to a theatrical Wall-E” (New York Times). WHY IT’S A MUST SEE A gorgeous, compelling and magical one man show by Tim Watts which manages to create this amazing deep sea world drawing in children and adults alike. The story follows the destruction of marriage through consuming jealousy, the abandonment of a child, and a seemingly hopeless love. Yet through remorse and regret – and after a statue comes miraculously to life – the ending is one of forgiveness and reconciliation. It is powerful material for ballet, with a story that allows for the portrayal of intense emotions between and within the characters, and the opportunity for the Company to create not just new central characters but the whole world around them. The exciting Latvian soprano Kristine Opolais sings the title role. She is matched in star power by Jonas Kaufmann as her lover, Des Grieux, and Christopher Maltman as her cynical brother Lescaut.
