An A-Z cliff-notes to operatic demise, with props, costumes, an impressive set of pipes and a higher death toll than a Jean Claude Van Damme film. Catering to the Opera-Curious and the seasoned Operaphile. Appreciation of opera not required. Short Synopsis: Death By Soprano satirically catalogues operatic death scenes in an A-Z, cabaret romp through Operatic Occupational Hazards. Death By Soprano is a cabaret work and accompanying photographic exhibition. The project is created with a great love of opera, although it also embraces a loving irreverence for her occasionally over-inflated ego. Utilising slapstick, absurdism, dark-clowning and a healthy dose of prop-humour, Death By Soprano portrays the final moments in the lives of operatic heroines. The show is created specifically for 'non-opera' demographics, particularly comedy, cabaret and festival audiences but also caters for lovers of classical music. Short Review: "Looking for a good Melbourne Fringe show? Try DEATH BY SOPRANO - opera's most morbid moments celebrated with gusto, glee, great stagecraft and an excellent voice." Isabel’s work has been described as ‘The Rarest of things... Theatre that mattered’ Arts Hub; ‘Radical, transgressive chic’ The Guardian, UK; ‘Gutsy and Likeable’ Cameron Woodhead, The Age 2014. As Soprano for Opera in the Air Isabel has performed opera in regional Victoria on top of grain silos, on mountains, cliffs, quarries and rooftops. Isabel’s cabaret work, La Petite Mort presented several successful seasons in Australia and overseas and was listed as 'Adelaide Fringe Top 3 Shows' Adelaide Magazine, 'Best Bets of the Melbourne Fringe' The Age, 'A truly original, delightful, accomplished show' The Scotsman and 'Hot Pick' ABC Classic FM's Limelight Magazine. Death By Soprano enjoyed sell-out seasons at La Mama, Nati Frinj, Perth Fringeworld and successful seasons at Promethean, Adelaide Fringe and the Melba Spiegeltent, Melbourne Fringe. It is a story about friendship, fake values, loss and perseverance, settled in a whimsical world of halfmechanised thingamabobs and headstrong puppets. Built from hard rubbish or op-shop treasures, the set is a celebration of the capricious: household items are transformed and given new uses and contexts, thus offering a humorous and surprising new look at things. Cute puppets get heart-broken and turn into naughty baddies, a model train creates magic moving shadows, Elmo loses his fur and wacky contraptions appear: off-beat rules! The 75 minute show (or 120 mins with an interval) is a solo show about contemporary politics and society from Australia’s longest serving comedian Rod Quantock. In this incarantion, Rod revisits the issues that dominated self and scoeity thirteen years ago and applies a 2015 lens. His passion hasn’t waned a bit. Short Review: The Age, August 5 2002, Reviewer: Helen Thomson “Of course, Rod Quantock and his audiences are anything but bored by our border protection policy… His subjects are many: Andrew Bolt, the World Economic Forum, George Bush and his Axis of Evil, Warracknabeal's passionfruit sponges, tram conductors and, of course, Tampa, Woomera, Philip Ruddock and, saved for a wonderfully comic act of revenge at the end, John Howard…Occasionally brilliant observations only whet our appetite for more, like the description of Ruddock's "cryogenic charm". So he sends us off at interval, having laughed mightily for nearly an hour but without a clue where it might all be leading. In the second half, however, he reveals a clever thread of connectedness in all the muddle… Once again, Quantock delivers telling blows to the right with disarming humour, cunningly disguised intelligence and idiosyncratic charm.” Written By: Rod Quantock Starring: Rod Quantock Artform: Stand-up Comedy This is a remount of existing work. Despite stereotypes to the contrary, there is an enormous audience of people who fit into those categories in rural Australia. Issues like climate change, refugee resettlement and reconciliation (to name a few of Rod's favourites) are not theoretical considerations for rural Australians - they represent lived experience. Rod speaks to these issues. Besides, whether people remember him from his "Captain Snooze" days or just want to check out the "funny old Pinko-Commie", when Rod arrives in town, audiences come. Rod also gives very good press which makes him a publicist’s dream. Rod’s age makes him attractive to the 40+ demographic, but his contemporary, cutting and anti-establishment politics appeal to younger generations. Marketing Package Included: High res Images and press quotes are available and ready to go. The poster will need to be re-designed to reflect contemporary issues. The pair was first introduced in 2012 when a mutual work and study place brought them together. After developing respect and appreciation for each other’s work, the pair investigated the possibility of collaborating to blend their passions for theatre and circus. This passion sparked a vision to create stories that encompass the entire performance space, challenging the laws of gravity and invoking a sense of magical realism in their play, and thus, the name Gravity Dolls was born. Short Synopsis: Waking Up Dead explores the story of an ordinary woman whose husband disappears and is then found to have been murdered. Through the investigation of his death, it becomes clear that he led an elaborate secret life. Following such shocking events, how does the woman go on with her life? If so much of her life and identity was built on secrets and half-truths, how does she know who she is? With the use of a giant drawing-board, in a beautifully rendered, intimate atmosphere, the woman recreates key memories of her lost relationship, grappling with the complex nature of love, identity and betrayal. The Ballad of Backbone Joe tells a hilariously daft and gruesome tale of a murder set in a small country town, in their unique, comedic, Mighty Boosh-esque style. Undefeated bare-knuckle boxer Backbone Joe has a right hook “as quick as a spun tea-bag” but repeated blows to the head have left him a bit slow to process little details. Like, did he really kill his wife by throwing her off a bridge? Abattoir owner and fight promoter Messy Dimes Dan is only too happy to fill in the blanks. Can Detective Von Trapp ease poor Joe's troubled mind? When they are not performing, operating their own lights and triggering primitive visual effects, the actors morph into musicians, pick up drums, guitar and double bass and rattle off foot-stompin' street blues from side of stage. “Wallace and Grommet meet David Lynch, five stars.” Montreal Gazette “like an inspired collaboration between Nick Cave and the League Of Gentlemen” The Guardian “Every once in a while a show has the power to beguile its audience with the sheer breadth of its originality. Short Synopsis: Slapdash Galaxy is the tale of Sam and Junior: two brothers who flee their barren planet, and embark on an epic journey across the galaxy. Using the contents of your cleaning closet, the award winning Bunk Puppets creates a unique shadow puppet universe made from bits of rubbish, old toys and household objects. The shadow puppetry is performed in front of the screen, so the audience gets to watch the transformation from household objects into shadow silhouette characters. A delicious theatrical journey full of imagination, odd-ball aliens and riveting D.I.Y. special effects made. Come play in the dark! Short Review: “Bunk Puppets brand of shadow puppetry and storytelling is wonderfully impressive, insanely inventive, madly loveable, and has the power to transform an audience of mostly adults into maniacally giggling children. For just under an hour, you enter a magical realm where a cluttered stage full of household items and puppets comes to life to tell the story of ‘two brothers on a trip across the stars’ as they flee their war-torn planet in search of a new home, accompanied by special effects and epic soundtrack.” - Edinburgh Festivals Magazine Written By: Jeff Achtem Directed By: Jeff Achtem Designed By: Jeff Achtem Starring: Hamish Fletcher Artform: Family Theatre & Puppetry This is a remount of an existing work for a confirmed tour. Ranters Theatre will provide high quality press and promotional tools, including: • Biographies and CVs of the company and company members • 6 minute promotional video • High quality images to generate a poster / flyer • Array of positive press clippings from both Australian and international media plus endorsements from previous presenting partners Awards: 2010 Victorian Green Room Award Best Ensemble Best New Writing for the Melbourne Stage Best Sound Composition 2010 Victorian Premier’s Literary Award Shortlisted Community engagement activities: The company has completed several workshop developments with young people in regional Victoria in Castlemaine in 2013 and 2014 and with further workshops in Bendigo and Heathcote in 2015. We have also made shows with non-professional performers where they make a performance in their own home for family friends and then travel to their neighbours to see their performance. We would also like to explore the option of combining the production of Intimacy with workshops and community performances like the above in order to deliver a longer Ranters residency style as part of any tour.
