Norway Celebrates 200 Years
T
his year — 2014 — marks the 200 year anniversary of the Norwegian Constitution. Signed into
effect on May 17, 1814, to break away from a 400 year Danish rule, the Norwegian Constitution is the oldest European constitution that still is in use. The Bicentennial is be celebrated all
over the world, especially at Norsk Høstfest!
Norsk Høstfest will welcome Kåre Aas, the Norwegian Ambassador to the United States during the
festival. Ambassador Aas was born in 1955 in Oslo, Norway. In 1983, Aas started his political career
with the Norwegian Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
He has held positions in many departments including the ministry’s security
department where he had to manage bilateral relations between Norway and the
U.S., the Russian Federation and the Central Asian Republics. In 2008, Aas took
his first post as the Ambassador to Afghanistan where he oversaw Norway’s funding for school construction be put to good use. After returning from his post, Aas
became the political director for the foreign ministry until his appointment by the
White House on Sept. 17, 2013.
Aas
This will be the first time Aas has visited North Dakota and will be attending
many events including the Governor’s Reception, Opening Ceremony, Scandinavian-American Hall of
Fame, along with making appearances during the festival.

Telemark brings delegation of 44 to Minot
Minot, N.D., and Skien, Telemark, Norway, have enjoyed a partnership as Sister Cities since 1981, and
in the more than three decades since, the relationship has flourished into a rich and rewarding transatlantic
connection. During its 33 year history, hundreds of Skien residents, including an official annual delegation,
have visited North Dakota to attend Norsk Høstfest; in return, Høstfest has sent many delegations to Skien.
This year, Telemark will be bringing a delegation of 44 to North Dakota and will celebrate the
opening of the Telemark Trade Office in Minot. An official ribbon cutting will be held during the
Tuesday evening Governor’s Reception at Norsk Høstfest.
While in Minot, the delegation will be participating in numerous events. Bodil Nordjore, a professor
for the traditional food program at Telemark University College, will be presenting in the Nordic
Demonstration Kitchen. And on Tuesday, Telemark members will be participating in the Minot Area
Development Corporation’s second annual International Business to Business Networking Seminar.
UNIVERSITY EXCHANGE PROGRAM
While business is a main focus of the Sister City partnership, a university exchange program has also
been established in the past years, with a Minot State University student studying in Telemark, and a
Telemark student coming to MSU.
But the partnership is far more than just an exchange program. During the years, many personal
friendships have been created, business connections have been established, and lasting bonds between the
two cities, thousands of miles and an ocean apart, have been formed.

MERLE HAGGARD
1 p.m., October 3
Widely regarded as one of country music’s
greatest living recording artists, Merle
Haggard is still performing his compelling
music well into his seventh decade. With
a career spanning five decades, Haggard has
proven himself as a creative force and
trailblazer in the industry, earning numerous
accolades and awards along the way. Haggard has
had more than three dozen No. 1 hits, racked up
Grammy, CMA and ACM awards, and been inducted into the Country Music
Hall of Fame, earning him the inarguable status of entertainment legend.
JOSH TURNER WITH SPECIAL GUEST
DANIELLE BRADBERY
SP 2FWREHU Country music singer/songwriter Josh Turner’s trademark baritone is in fine form
on his new MCA Nashville album album, “Punching Bag.” Turner is a student of
traditional country music with a bluegrass influence,
a combination that’s lead to sales of more than
five million albums and earned the young star
membership in the Grand Ole Opry™.
A family man of faith, Turner is also a
mentor to some up-and-coming artists —
including the special guest of his current
tour, Danielle Bradbery, the youngest
winner of NBC’s signing competition,
“The Voice.” and newest upcoming Country
star with hit songs like “The Heart of Dixie”
and “Young In America.”
* Danielle Bradbery will open for Josh Turner at Norsk
Høstfest.
BJ THOMAS
SP 2FWREHU Fifty years on the music scene has made
BJ Thomas a true American legend in pop,
country and gospel music. With five
Grammys and two Dove Awards to his name,
Thomas has sold more than 70 million records
and is ranked as one of Billboard’s Top 50 most
Page 5
played artists during the past 50 years. Thomas’s most recent offering is The Living
Room Sessions, an intimate acoustic re-imagining of 12 of his most beloved songs,
including “Raindrops Keep Fallin’ On My Head,” Hooked on a Feeling,” and
“Another Somebody Done Somebody Wrong Song.”
*BJ Thomas and Herman’s Hermits starring Peter Noone will be performing in a
double-header concert at Norsk Høstfest.
HERMAN’S HERMITS STARRING PETER NOONE
SP 2FWREHU The British Pop Invasion changed the landscape of the
American music scene in the 1960s—and young
Peter Noone was part of that iconic time in a
big way. As the lead singer of the pop band
Herman’s Hermits, Noone sang hits like “I’m
Into Something Good,” “Mrs. Brown You’ve
Got a Lovely Daughter,” “I’m Henry VIII,
I Am,” and “There’s a Kind of Hush,” just
to name a few. In all, Herman’s Hermits sold
over 52 million recordings, and Noone became
a teen heartthrob from across the pond. Eventually, Noone added acting credits to his resume, and
with a solid entertainment career under his belt, he’s still
delighting audiences and singing his nostalgic tunes today.
*BJ Thomas and Herman’s Hermits starring Peter Noone will be performing in a
double-header concert at Norsk Høstfest.

Scandinavian Youth Camp Expands
After Record Year in 2013
O
ne of the best ways to make children excited about
heritage and culture is to let them experience it hands-on.
For more than a decade, that’s been the driving philosophy
of the Scandinavian Youth Camp, which reached record enrollment
in 2013. During Scandinavian Youth Camp, kids are invited to
explore Scandinavian culture through stories, songs, dance, and
other guided activities.
“The kids just light up,” said Tracey Lawson, Chairperson for
Høstfest in the Schools and Scandinavian Youth Camp. “It’s a joy
to see children become curious about different cultures.”
This year, Scandinavian Youth Camp is once again presented by
Statoil, an important Høstfest supporter with a deep commitment
to spreading awareness and appreciation for cultural curiosity and
knowledge. In the case of Scandinavian Youth Camp, Statoil is helping cultivate an interest in culture
and heritage in the next generation. Influencing young people to
take an active role in preserving
history and arming them with the
tools to better the future is what
Statoil’s commitment to the
“Heroes of Tomorrow” is all about.
Open to children in grades two
through 12, is held the weekend before Norsk Høstfest, Sept. 27
& 28, at Magic City Campus in Minot, N.D. There are eight
unique sessions within the camp, with expert instructors and
teachers working closely with the students.
Two new classes being offered this year promise to be entertaining and educational. During the Kubb and Scandinavian Games,
kids in grades two through four will learn to play the ancient
throwing game called
Kubb, try a Viking Sheep
Toss, and play other silly
and fun traditional games
from Sweden.
Swedish Folk Singing
will be a hit with musicallyminded fifth- through
eighth-graders. Children will learn happy songs, sad songs, dancing
songs and Viking rowing songs, all while dabbling in a bit of Swedish language. Students enrolled in the Swedish Folk Singing camp
will receive a CD with songs and lyrics to help them practice.
Fourth graders can learn how to turn Danish LEGO blocks into
masterpieces with LEGO artist Dan Parker, who is back for another
year of camp.
Second- and third-graders with an interest in music and dance
are invited to participate in the Swedish Dance and Song camp,
where they’ll study Swedish culture, songs, and traditional dances.
Fourth- through 12th-graders can join the Norwegian dance
camp, where they’ll learn to play the mouth harp and perform the
famous Norwegian hat dance.
The Norwegian theatre camp
is aimed at fifththrough 12thgraders with an
interest in song,
dance, drama, and
traditional Norwegian folk tales. Help create a script while bringing
a historical Norwegian ballad to life!
Students more interested in arts and crafts will enjoy the Viking
camp, where they’ll learn how to build things like chainmail and
shields in addition to making a “Hnefetafal” game board, weaving
a belt, and creating a leather pouch. The Viking camp is open to
fourth-, fifth-, and sixth-graders.
And kids in fifth through eighth grades (who aren’t afraid to get
a little messy!) will love Troll mask making camp, where they’ll study
trolls and make custom papier-mâché masks.
Following the busy weekend of learning and creating, the kids
are invited to display their newly acquired skills each day at Norsk
Høstfest. The student performances this year will be held in Tromsø
Hall, and will include a dance around the Midsømmer Stang
(Swedish Maypole), the Troll Beauty Pageant, and much more.
If your child would like to participate in the Scandinavian Youth
Camp, please complete the registration form at hostfest.com by Sept
10. There is a $10 registration fee, and kids are accepted on a firstcome, first-serve basis. For more information please contact Deb
Sisco at (701) 240-3624 or Tracey Lawson at (701) 857-4450.
Statoil takes LEGO Camp to Williston
One of the more popular Høstfest Scandinavian Youth Camp
sessions is heading to Williston. LEGO Camp, presented by Statoil,
will make its debut in western
North Dakota.
Fourth through sixth graders
can learn how to turn Danish
LEGO blocks into masterpieces
with LEGO artist Dan Parker.
The camp will be held
5-8 p.m., Friday, Sept. 26, in the
Williston ARC multipurpose
room 2. Registration, along with a $10 camp fee, is required as the
camp has enrollment limits.
Registration forms can be found online at www.hostfest.com or

History Comes Alive . . .
Expanded Viking Village a major highlight of this year’s Høstfest
W
hat does it take to make an ancient, legendary culture come to life?
For Viking expert Tim Jorgenson, it was a trip to Norway as a student
that piqued an interest in the old Norse seafarers; now he’s hoping his
overhaul of Høstfest’s Viking Village will inspire that same curiosity in festival-goers
this year.
After taking a job with the Historical and Cultural Society of Clay County in
Moorhead, Minn., Jorgenson, who holds a Master’s Degree in Folk Studies, was tasked
with coordinating the annual Midwest
Viking Festival held there.
“Each year, I’d pick a few new areas to
research so we could develop a broader way
to portray what was going on in Viking
Age Scandinavia,” Jorgenson said. It’s that
experience he will be drawing from in this,
his first year of organizational involvement
with Norsk Høstfest.
“The biggest change from previous
years will be more Vikings and a more
comprehensive offering of demonstrations
and activities,” Jorgenson said. “There
will also be plenty of replica items, such
as Viking tents and a bed based on burial
finds from Norway. Those familiar with
the Viking Age Club and Society from
Minneapolis will have a chance to meet
them again, and there’ll also be representatives from other major Viking groups in
North America.”
Paying a visit to Viking Village, which is now located in the Flickertail Gardens
area of the festival grounds, is designed to transport visitors to a different place and
time, where Vikings battled with swords and axes, worked extensively with their
hands, and observed time-honored traditions. Visitors will be able to watch Viking
blacksmithers, wool dyers, leatherworkers, and woodcarvers, and ask questions of the
skilled craftsmen actively creating their wares.
One of those craftsmen is master woodcarver Jay Haavik, who carved the decorative keel on the new Oseberg ship in Tonsberg, Norway, and served as lead woodcarver
for the creation of the replica vessel. Jorgenson says having experts like Haavik readily
accessible — and eager to share their skills — is an important element of the
experience.
“The goals for the demonstrations
is largely for the sake of education and
preserving the traditions,” he said. “I hope
others take an interest in pursuing the
crafts they see.”
General interest in Nordic culture has
risen in recent years thanks to television
shows about Vikings and even movies
such as Disney’s “Frozen” featuring
Norwegian culture and folklore, but
Jorgenson says those mediums give just
a small glimpse into a rich history that is
waiting to be discovered—something that
can be done in a very hands-on, exciting
way inside Høstfest’s Viking Village.
“Most people already know that
Vikings didn’t have horn on their helmets;
the next step is to show the public how
Viking helmets were made and why there
are so few original examples. I hope people learn about spears, arrows, and axes, and
how their different shapes could serve different purposes. I hope people come away
with a sense of the craftsmanship that the Norse had,” Jorgenson said. “I hope visitors
take away a broader understanding of what life was like in Viking Age Scandinavia.”

Hands-On Heritage: Høstfest University
F
ew things are more fascinating at Norsk Høstfest than watching the talented
artisans doing their work inside Copenhagen Hall. Encountering such a wide
range of artwork and skill—all on display simultaneously—is a uniquely
enriching element of the festival enjoyed by artisans and Høstfest attendees alike.
Thanks to the vision of one of those artisans, the 2014 festival experience can be
elevated by enrolling in Høstfest University (HU), a series of hands-on classes taught
by the artists themselves.
Woodcarver Cooper Ternes says his idea for the university was born of a simple
goal. “I want to give people a chance to do some of the things they get to watch,”
he said. “I know from my own experience people want to get more involved if you
give them the opportunity, so I wanted
to set it up so people could take part in

produces a tangible benefit as well.
“People will be coming to learn, but
they’ll be leaving with a product they made,” he said. “Someone will be able to take
that and say, ‘You know I can do this!’ ”
Ternes says
sharing the passion
for traditional

is something the
artisans truly enjoy,
and Høstfest itself
provides a perfect
vehicle for that
cultural exchange.
“Høstfest has

we’re adding the

. . . the 2014 festival experience can be elevated
by enrolling in Høstfest University (HU), a series of
hands-on classes taught by the artists themselves.
Anyone looking to enhance their Høstfest experience — regardless of skill level —
is encouraged to enroll in one of the many classes being offered. Class sizes are
being kept purposefully small — limited to just eight students per class — in order
to provide students with intimate instruction and interaction with the artisans and
their trade. There are both
half-day and full-day sessions available, with festival
admission included in fees.
Ternes, who’s has
attended Høstfest as an
artisan several times, says
it’s the zeal for Scandinavian
culture that keeps him
coming back and inspired
him to organize Høstfest
University. “I just love
seeing all these people
excited about the same
culture and aesthetic that
I’m excited about,” he said.
“I think it’s pretty much that
simple.”
Enrollment in Høstfest
University is open to all
Høstfest guests, and requires

Scandinavian Values With A Scandinavian Mission
Norsk Høstfest Association and the Scandinavian Heritage
Association, recognized the benefit of working together to
sustain their ongoing missions of promoting and preserving
Scandinavian culture and heritage in region. And like their
Viking ancestors, they understood a vehicle was needed for the
long voyage connecting the past, to the present to the future.
In 1999, they began construction on such a vehicle, a new
permanent ‘drakkar’ (longboat), the Høstfest-Heritage Foundation (HHF), whose
mission would be:
[ to serve as a catalyst constantly focused on the question, vision and best
practices for “how are we preserving the Scandinavian heritage in North
America?”
[ to provide coordination and help for others to celebrate the Nordic heritage
by promoting and preserving traditional family, cultural, and community
values for the benefit of all generations
[ to help recruit and inspire new leadership
[ to develop and cultivate a strong philanthropic culture anchored by a comprehensive fund development program providing the best opportunities for the
many friends and donors to financially support the associations’ missions and
related Scandinavian heritage preservation, both current and future
[ to be the very best steward of charitable gifts and finances committed to the
preservation of our Scandinavian heritage today and tomorrow
Guiding these five mission objectives are HHF’s core values -— EXCELLENCE,
INTEGRITY, PASSION, INNOVATION, WISDOM and PARTNERSHIP. These
values align with those of our many friends and donors who made Norsk Høstfest and
Minot’s Scandinavian Heritage Park a reality. Because of their commitment we are
able to welcome and join with others from throughout the world in honoring and
celebrating the culture and heritage of the Scandinavian people of Denmark, Finland,
Iceland, Norway and Sweden.
To learn more about the Høstfest-Heritage Foundation and how you can make
an impact in celebrating Scandinavian heritage by promoting and preserving
traditional family, cultural, and community values for the benefit of all future
generations.
Contact Ritchie Houge, HHF Foundation Director at (701) 852-1027 or by
e-mail [email protected].
Sincerely, Høstfest-Heritage Foundation [ “Our Values Align”
