Autumn Newsletter 2015 Storrington and District Twinning Association Chez Joel, Steyning Another chance to visit a local French restaurant A choice of 3 starters, mains and dessert with red or white wine September 25th starting at 7:15pm Price:£35 pp. July’s AGM Dates for your Diary Chez Joel, Film night Wine Tasting Sept 25th Oct 23rd Nov 20th 2016 Nouvel An Jan 15th Quatre Pays Meal Feb12th (We thought we’d go one better than our popular Trois Pays!) Film night Mar 18th This was held at Klara’s house and garden again this year—thank you Klara. And thank you also to Clive for his barbeque skills, aided by his ‘souschef’ David Smithson! After a very wet morning the sky cleared and we were blessed with a beautiful, but hot, afternoon. The formalities of the AGM took place before lunch. The existing committee, which had already agreed to stay on for another year, was voted in and has now been joined by Tim and Juliette. It was also with regret that Alan Hughes’ resignation from the committee was accepted, as he has been with the Association for many years, being a founder member and visiting Villerest often in the past. After these formalities were over a pleasant lunch was enjoyed by all, followed by a competitive game of Croquet or just a catch-up chat. News from our members Roger Paulin Ian Ferguson wrote recently about an original member of the association At the last Film Show, in his introduction Alan recalled the early history of the Twinning and the original phone call from my old friend Roger Paulin in Villerest asking whether I could suggest a possible twinning candidate for them - a village of say about 5,000 + , in southern England. I didn't ponder very long .......et le reste est histoire! That was a long time ago and Roger is well in his 90's and not in the best of health (early dementia) and has moved to Roanne and has very little contact with Villerest or the Jumelage. I went to see him last year and have been again recently. I thought you might like to have his news and see a photo of " les peres fondateurs" . Typically he has short-term memory problems but we dug happily into the past..........not only early Twinning days but way, way back, over (to our horror) seventy years! Christa Hancock An early, regular and enthusiastic Twinner, Christa so enjoyed her Villerest visits that she sold her delightful little cottage (on the miniroundabout in the middle of the village) and moved there. She has now found an equally delightful but totally different village house in the nearby ancient town of Charlieu and is completely and happily at home there and able to keep up her Twinning interests. The photo was taken at a typical, long and delicious French lunch. Page 2 Forthcoming Films French Film Nights Friday, 23rd October - “La Gloire de mon père” Visitors to Villerest May this year. Picture and information courtesy of Dee Back in May a group from Storrington arrived at Villerest for a four day exchange. We were warmly greeted by the Municipality (new Mayor) during a welcome cocktail. The programme was varied:-including a boat trip ride over the Loire and Chateau, a visit to Roanne Centre Ville, Museum and an art gallery, a tour of Vichy with its spectacular Victorian park, a ride on a local petite train taking in all the lovely scenery of the town and as you would expect, it has some superb restaurants. We tasted the local spring waters that Prince Albert & Queen Victoria once visited. A truly beautiful town. All rounded off with a cabaret evening at l’ Oberge du barrage. It is always nice to re-visit our Villerestois friends. Villerest Visit to Storrington 2016 We were due to receive our friends from Villerest in May 2016, but have received news from Cerrione Italy, together with three other local communities, that they are putting together a twinning project to the European Commission, called “Europe for Citizens”. If this gets the go ahead this event would take place in Cerrione in May 2016. Due to the cost only Committee Members from all 4 communities have been invited to attend. As this visit is set to take place in May it would clash with Villerest’s proposed visit to Storrington. Therefore, we are in contact with them to confirm another date in 2016 for their visit. As soon as a new date is confirmed we will contact you. Based on the childhood memories of Marcel Pagnol in La Gloire de Mon Père and its sequel Le Chateau de Ma Mere are two of the most loved and successful French films ever made. A 10- year-old Marcel Pagnol recalls the story of his school days and family life growing up in 19th century. His parents decide to rent a villa in the hills of Provence where they continue to enjoy idyllic summer holidays. He befriends a local boy, Lilli who teaches him all about country wild life etc. Unfortunately back in town Marcel takes special classes to prepare for the Lycee. Venue: Trinity Methodist Main Hall, 7.30pm. Duration: 1hr45 With English subtitles Members: £3, Non-Members: £3.50 2016 Friday, 18th March – “La Chateau de Ma Mère” Following on from Marcel’s early years, the story continues with his mother who cleverly arranges to befriend the school headmaster’s wife and means they are now able to spend more time away at weekends. The long trek to the house from where they leave the road takes hours on foot. The short cut means trespassing across private estates, but Marcel’s father, a law-abiding school teacher, is torn and the family put pressure on him to forget his conscience. Marcel’s first encounter with the fairer sex, an adorable blond munchkin who turns him into her slave much to the dismay of his family and his friend Lilli. Together these timeless classics stand as one of cinema’s greatest celebrations of childhood, filled with warmth, love and a poignant nostalgia for bygone days and depict a lost world of simple pleasures and the hardships that most people took for granted in the past. Definitely a “feel good” factor. Venue: Trinity Methodist Main Hall, 7.30pm. Duration: 1hr35 with English sub-titles. Members: £3, Non-Members: £3.50 We hope that this programme will appeal to you all. If you have any ideas or experiences of France that you would like to share, please contact Heather at [email protected] and we will endeavor to include your ideas.
