when the firm embarked on a corporate restructuring programme.
In January 2013, reality of restructuring reared its head. The company’s
human resource (HR) manager was asked to leave, without being offered
a compensation package.

Joining a union helped these PMEs navigate the tricky tides of
corporate restructuring successfully
Mr Tan joined a chemical company as a maintenance supervisor when it
was first set up in 2001 and was promoted to be a general manager 10
years later.
The company offered very good staff benefits, so Mr Tan and his fellow
PMEs (Professionals, Managers and Executives) gave little thought to

process. I could no longer help or protect my staff.” he said.
Realising that many other PMEs could be affected, Mr Tan began
discussions with Industrial Relations Officers from the Chemical
Industries Employees’ Union (CIEU) in April 2013. The following month,
he spoke to his colleagues about forming a union and they formed a
branch under the CIEU.
In August 2013, Mr Tan was retrenched along with four other PMEs in
the firm, but all five employees were fairly compensated with CIEU’s help.
A Silver Lining
The union also worked with NTUC’s e2i (Employment and Employability
Institute) to offer Mr Tan and his retrenched colleagues employment
assistance.
Mr Tan appreciated the union’s help during this difficult period and was
glad to have played a part in protecting the interests of PMEs. “My goal
was to ensure that the workers were not short-changed after their years
of dedication and hard work,” he said.

The National Trades Union Congress (NTUC) has partnered with The
Law Society of Singapore in an initiative called “Law Works” to reach out
to workers. One aspect of “Law Works” is the monthly legal clinics for
members to consult practising experts on various legal issues. You may

of the legal clinics.

The Ministry of Manpower (MOM), with the support of the tripartite
partners - the Singapore National Employers Federation (SNEF) and the
National Trades Union Congress (NTUC), introduced tripartite mediation
as a new employment dispute resolution process to facilitate settlement
of certain employment disputes between the Professionals, Managers
and Executives (PMEs) and their employers.
