Cover Cats (Front and Back) and Poster Cats: Lil Bub a.k.a. BUB is a one-of-a-kind cat. Rescued as the runt of a healthy feral litter, she was born with several
genetic mutations. Lil Bub has become an Internet celebrity, known for her “perma-kitten” appearance. Lil Bub has appeared on the Today Show, Good Morning
America, and The View. She stars in Lil Bub & Friendz, a documentary which premiered at the Tribeca Film Festival in April, 2013, and won the Tribeca Online
Festival Best Feature Film. On Lil Bub’s second birthday, the man behind the cat, Mike Bridavsky announced that she would star in Lil BUB’s Big Show, web series.
Her first guest was Whoopi Goldberg who met her on The View. A portion of the proceeds from all items in Bub’s online store go toward helping other animals in
need: http://store.lilbub.com. For more BUB: www.lilbub.com
Henri, Le Chat Noir is the world’s first and foremost feline philosopher. The first short film Henri was a film project by Will Braden who was studying at the Seattle
Film Institute. Braden was inspired by the American perception on French films, viewing them as “very pretentious and self-involved. [...] And what could be more
self-absorbed and pampered than a house cat?” Braden would write the scripts and his mother, who is fluent in French, would help with pronunciations and
proper usage. Henri was shot, edited, narrated, and written in eleven days and released May 27, 2007. Will has gone on to create additional films and Henri Le
Chat Noir has become an Internet cat sensation. Film critic, Roger Ebert, called Henri 2, Paw De Deux “The best Internet cat video ever made.” For more “musing

A LETTER FROM THE
EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR
On behalf of all of us here at Tree House, thank you for your continued support. It has been an incredible year for adoptions, and I am pleased to share with
you that in 2013 we will surpass our previous annual adoption record. As of November 22nd, we have placed 874 cat and kittens. This number includes
689 from our two adoption centers, 119 from our Community Cats Program offsite adoption partners, as well as 66 feral cats for whom we’ve found new
colony sites. This is an incredible milestone for us and exceeds last year’s total of 804 placements. We could not have achieved this without the support of
people like you. Please continue to help us spread the word about our mission to continue to increase our number of adoptions and give even more cats in
need the forever homes they deserve.
In 2013, we have made great strides toward our Capital
Campaign goal to build the most progressive, state-ofthe-art Adoption Center and Low-cost Veterinary Clinic
in the country. We have been working with The Dobbins
Group, a Chicago-based architectural firm with extensive
experience in unique and customized design which
integrates architecture, interior design, engineering, and
construction. Pictured here are updated renderings of our
new facility. We have made some exciting revisions to
our original facility design that will help set Tree House
apart from other shelters in the country. We are currently
working to acquire the zoning and permit documentation
necessary for construction, which may take several
months to finalize, with a plan of breaking ground for our
new facility in the summer of 2014. We plan to celebrate
the groundbreaking ceremony with an event, which will
also serve as the kick off for our public campaign to complete the funding necessary for the construction. As we proceed, we will continue to share with
you more detailed plans on our website and in future communication.
Please understand that while we have secured the necessary funding to begin construction, we will still need considerable help with the Campaign
throughout the construction and beyond, and we ask you to consider how you might be able to help. With your support and donations, we can make this
dream a reality.
Please enjoy the stories of rescue and resilience within this edition of the Tree House News. There are some inspiring case studies that epitomize our core
mission, and they remind us of why we invest our time, funding, and emotions into these cats’ lives. Their stories are a testament to all of our supporters,
who give to Tree House in so many ways, yet it begins with a passion for the cause of animal welfare. We realize that we couldn’t carry out the Tree House
mission without the support of involved and dedicated people like you.
We are gearing up for one of our favorite times of year here at Tree House, and we hope you’ll come celebrate the holiday season at our house during our
annual Lights of Love Celebration. It’s also a wonderful opportunity for you to memorialize and honor the special people and pets in your life with a tribute
gift while supporting our life-saving animal welfare programs at the same time. We’ll light up our Uptown Headquarters with thousands of tribute lights in
honor of your loved one. Please visit: TreeHouseAnimals.org/LightsofLove
to learn more about Lights of Love and how you can participate.
Thank you again for everything you do for Tree House!
Sincerely,
David de Funiak

LETTERS FROM OUR SUPPORTERS
VANDERMOLEN
We renamed Vandermolen (Tree House name), and he now goes by Bernie
and already knows his name. He is doing absolutely great! When we
first brought him home, he acclimated to his “safe room” and then our
apartment very quickly. After about a week, we began to introduce Bernie
and our other cat, Franco, with a hallway feeding. While we took it slow,
it was evident that they were very interested in one another and remained
very calm. After just a single play date, it was clear these guys were set to
be instant friends and are now extremely close – I’m so excited! Bernie has
been the perfect addition to our home and is a great companion for Franco.
- Caitlin Law
KRISI
Krisi is doing great and gets along with my other cats splendidly. They
play together all the time. Krisi loves being held and hates being ignored.
When I am on my computer, she is always on my lap within seconds of
my sitting down and will start meowing, quite tenaciously, if I don’t pay
attention to her for more than a couple of seconds. She enjoys sleeping
with me and joins me almost every night. She is an excellent, healthy cat,
and I am so very glad I adopted her!!
- Kyle Langhans
PRINCESS BUTTERCUP
The Princess is fantastic. Her new name is Sam, short for Samadhi. Sam
adjusted quickly and started ordering around our other cat within a week
(he had coaxed her to chase him, which he enjoys, however she has also
stolen his favorite toys). She loves wand toys and showing off her hunting
skills, and if I put her in my lap, she’ll stay there forever. She has her
favorite places in the house and recently discovered the joys of sleeping
with humans in a bed! She is eating well, is full of spunk, and incredibly
smart. We love her, and I’ll continue to spoil the Princess with love and
minced salmon (Wellness). We’re so grateful to Tree House!
- Ellen McClure
BALOONABOO
I am happy to report that Baloonaboo is doing well, and his health is back
to normal. I am also thrilled to share that my wish has come true when we
witnessed our other cat, Snow, cleaning Boo’s head. Snow had cleaned our
other cat’s head in this way, and he passed away in March. I was so hopeful
Snow would find a similar bond with Boo and am so happy for them both.
A favorite after breakfast activity is relaxing together in the sun. Boo is very
comfortable in his forever home. Thanks to all at Tree House.
- Janelle Bundas
KRISI
PRINCESS BUTTERCUP
JINXIE
It’s been a little over six months since we adopted Merida (Tree
House name Jinxie), and we are so incredibly glad we did! She is
an amazing cat! She’s very affectionate with Greg and I, and now
allows me to hold her. Additionally, her overstimulation issues
have improved significantly. At first, she would not allow visitors
to pet her anywhere except on her head and would quickly become
overstimulated. However, recently she met a large number of my
family members and did not swat at anyone. She has also been
fantastic with the friends that have taken care of her when we’ve
been away. I’ve even been able to get in some belly rubs when she’s
feeling particularly comfortable and affectionate, which is something
I never imagined I would be able to do given how unresponsive she
was when we first met her. Her signature move is her head butt.
Before any new person can really pet her, they must let her sniff
their hand and wait for her approving head butt. We love her head
butts and solicit them often as well! She also loves cheek and ear
scratches, and if you find just the right spot you can get her leg
going, which is beyond adorable!
She enjoys stretching out in sunny spots or curling up against my
legs in the recliner. She also loves to play and goes nuts for the cat
dancer, but her favorite toy by far is her catnip fishy. She’ll bite it,
lick it, and bunny kick it. But the best antic is when she pounces
on him, bats him around, then leaps straight up in the air and bolts
away! The most wonderful part, though, is that while we have been
able to help her blossom, she has also helped me. There was one
week in particular that was incredibly difficult, and I was feeling a
great deal of stress and pressure. Every single night, Merida slept
curled up against me on the bed (she normally prefers to sleep in her
cat tree), and during the day whenever I was really struggling, she
would be right there, snuggling against me on the couch or following
me from room to room. We feel so lucky to have her in our lives!
We are incredibly grateful to everyone at Tree House for taking such
good care of her and for helping a fluffy, little feral kitten become the
loving, happy, healthy cat that she is today! And thank you so much
for teaching us how to be the best cat parents possible! What we
have learned from all of you has not only helped us provide the best
care possible for Merida, but we have passed it on to my brother,
who is a proud new cat parent, as well as others.

CELEBRITY CATS ARE RAISING
AND HELPING THE MASSES UNDERSTAND WHAT WE’VE KNOWN ALL ALONG – CATS RULE!
If you haven’t noticed, “celebrity” cats are all the rage and
have become the focus of public fascination, paparazzistyle stalking, and big-time promotional and advertising
deals. Not since Chicago’s Morris have cats been so
popular, and the Internet and social media is extending
their reach worldwide.
Over the last several months, we have had the opportunity
to meet quite a few of the biggest Internet cat celebs and
their peeps and have partnered with two of the biggest –
the dapper existentialist, Henri, and the cute, round-eyed,
pink-tongued Lil Bub from outer space!
October was an especially star-studded month as we were
the beneficiary of Lil Bub’s Chicago Film premiere at the
Metro. On October 10th, more than 1,000 Bub fans waited
in a line down the block to get in and several hundred more
waited after the show for a special meet and greet, and Q &
A with Bub and her dude, Mike Bridavsky. During the Q &
A, Bridavsky discussed his and Bub’s new-found celebrity,
the pressures of being a poster boy for men-loving cats,
his favorite celebrity fans (Whoopi Goldberg), and fantasy
guests for Bub’s TV Show (David Lynch and Bill Murray). He
also let us listen to Bub snoring through the microphone.
On October 17th, Henri Le Chat Noir’s dad, Will Braden
was our special guest at the Black Cat Ball gala. Will gave
a speech discussing his rise to what he calls an “Internet
cat video mogul” and talked about the importance of our
work and why he feels called to give back to organizations
like Tree House. Will notes his number one celebrity fan is
Christopher Walken, and Chicago’s own Roger Ebert called
Henri’s Paw de Deux the “best of the Internet cat offerings”.
Indeed, we were grateful for three short videos Henri did
especially for Tree House to help promote our Ball and the
Cat Internet Video Festival, which we co-hosted on October
19th with Chicago Cat Rescue. Braden also attended the
festival doing a short Q & A before the showings and signing
copies of Henri’s new coffee table book.
In the end, there is much more to Bub than her cuteness
and to Henri than his ennui. They and “their dudes” are both
advocates for adoption, and both serve as poster cats for
their respective causes – Bub for special needs cats and
Henri for black cats – which are both near and dear to Tree
House. We were grateful to have the opportunity to do a
short Q & A with them both. We’re sure you’ll find their
answers both enlightening and humorous.
4
Q & A WITH LIL BUB AND HENRI
1. How has your life changed since becoming famous? B: Hi it’s me. BUB. Well not much really, back on my planet I was
wildly famous. So the biggest adjustment, since crashing here,
was adapting to the gravitational pull of your planet. I knew it
was only a matter of time before I would become famous here
as well, and be able to continue to spread my message of love,
positivity, and being amazing.
H: Fame is an illusion. It has not affected my life. The thieving
filmmaker, however, I’m sure has bought a bunch of new
camera lenses. 2. Who are your favorite human friends/fans?
B: I love everyone that loves me. Especially my dude. He’s just great.
H: Favorite humans? Isn’t that an oxymoron? Well, many of
my fans are willing to turn their money into charity for cats in
need, so I suppose that’s good. Also, they’re better with the can
opener. So, I guess my favorite human would be a tie between
anyone with thumbs.
3. How do your other feline friends feel about your fame?
B: Well, I hate to say this... but I don’t really have any other
feline friends. My dude has 4 other cats, but I don’t live with
them. I’ve met them though. Josie seems to not mind me, and
THE PROFILE OF OUR WORK!
she is the one cat I’ve hissed at the least. But I’m most comfortable
saving the planet alone in my apartment.
H: I keep to myself, but the thieving filmmaker sure likes to hobnob
with other cat celebrities. I think he has a crush on Lil Bub. It’s
disturbing. 4. Do you have any favorite toys, treats, or meals?
B: I love food in general. I especially love Brown Cow Yogurt (but
can’t be bothered with anything else - this isn’t a plug, it’s literally
the only yogurt I even consider, and I love it). As for toys, well I sure
do like feathers.
H: Toys are just a distraction from the important things in life. I avoid
them. Plus, all of mine have rolled under the fridge. I enjoy Party Mix
as a “treat”. My favorite meal is the sustenance of disenchantment. 5. If you could make three wishes what would they be?
B: 1) All pets have good homes. 2) All pets are treated with the
love and attention they deserve. 3) To be able to fly without my
spaceship.
H: If wishing made any difference, I would not have to live with the
white imbecile. Wishes are a fool’s errand.
6. Your person is a man, and he clearly adores you, but it seems
that until recently, it was hard for some men to admit their best
friend was a cat instead of a dog. Any advice for other men who
want to do the same?
B: I don’t have much advice besides “do what you want” and “who
cares what anyone else thinks”. My dude was not aware that it
wasn’t “ok” for guys to like cats, and honestly that’s just absurd. If
you like something, like it!
H: If you admit your best friend is a cat instead of another human,
you will prove you have at least a little sense. Plus, chicks dig cats.
7. What advice would you give to first-time cat adopters?
B: I think the most important thing is to give them lots of love and
attention. Cats are independent creatures, but they also appreciate
attention. Spend a lot of time with your cat, play with your cat,
talk to your cat, and nap with your cat. They will appreciate it and
return this love ten fold.
H: Remember that, despite what you hear about your generosity,
the cat is doing you a favor. Consider yourself lucky, and ask
yourself why it took you so long to adopt a cat. Then go adopt
another one…preferably a black one.
8. What else can people do to help homeless cats besides
adopting them?
B: There’s a lot you can do! For one, you can volunteer at your
local animal shelter. You can foster cats that need homes. You
can even help the overpopulation problem by trapping feral cats in
your area and getting them spayed or neutered. H: Remember that organizations, shelters and charities know
more than you. Give them your money. Although I suppose if you
have to interfere, make sure you consult an expert before getting
involved. 9. Any advice for cat people whose kitties are not using the
litter box? Scratching the furniture?
B: This is not my area of expertise, so I don’t want to give any
misinformation. If you need tips on how to save the world, or
travel time, I can help with that. Just text me. H: If your cat is “acting up”, you should examine your behavior
and see what you can do to stop bothering them. They are just
trying to teach a lesson and make sure you are properly trained.
Take it to heart.
10. What is the key to a happy life?
B: Well it certainly is different for everyone. But some general
advice: surround yourself with awesome friends, don’t be afraid to
be different because different is better, and do stuff that you like. H: A happy life? Pssh, I don’t know. Self-delusion?
11. Any other messages for your fans?
B: GOOD JOB FANS.
H: Feed your cat an hour early today. It is the closest thing to true
bliss they will ever know.

OVERLOOKED
BUT NOT FORGOTTEN
CELEBRATING TREE HOUSE’S OWN ‘CELEBRITY’ CATS
This is a special edition of the Tree House News. As shared in our Cover
Story, we have been thrilled to have had the opportunity to partner
with Internet cat sensations, Henri and Lil Bub. As mentioned, they
are wonderful spokescats who help raise attention and awareness for
the work we do. Lil Bub is a wonderful advocate for special needs cats
while Henri comically plays the exaggerated role of the existentialist
with a bit of attitude – and who is a little ‘misunderstood’. This month
we want to share with you stories of a few of our Henri and Lil Bubtype cats.
OVERCOMING THE ODDS – SPECIAL CATS WITH SPECIAL NEEDS
At Tree House we have a unique focus on cats who may have nowhere
else to go. This year alone, we have rescued more than three hundred
cats who have suffered from injury or illness as well as cats with
chronic conditions. We believe that every cat deserves a second
chance, and we go to great lengths to ensure they get that chance.
Following are several heartwarming and inspiring stories of cats who
were recently rescued. Each has faced difficult odds, yet persevered.
CHIEF BIG TREE
Chief Big Tree was seemingly abandoned to fend for himself at a
forest preserve in the Chicago suburb, Forest Glen. A caring couple
found him wandering around and struggling in the woods, and it was
evident that his eyes were badly damaged. Very concerned for him,
they rushed him to Tree House. This sweet and patient guy was eager
for love and attention. Upon arrival, he was severely dehydrated, and
it was clear he had been having a difficult time. It seems that poor
Chief is fully blind, and his left ear is crinkled from being infected for
too long without treatment. We think Chief is approximately ten years
CHIEF BIG TREE
6
old, and it’s hard to say what might have happened to this gentle
cat. It is difficult to imagine that someone would abandon this blind
tabby, who is unable to take care of himself, outside. He is fortunate
the kind couple found him when they did. As Chief has settled into
Tree House, he has shown himself to be an incredibly sweet cat and a
true cuddler. He loves to nuzzle close to people and give affection as
much as getting it. We are certain he will melt the heart of some lucky
person who will give him a forever home.
JUDO
Little Judo had been born into the home of an animal hoarder. After the
person moved away, and left him and the other cats behind, he was
TNRed (Trap-Neuter-Return). Another Tree House volunteer found
out that Judo had been injured and still lived at the now abandoned
house. She asked us for help, sharing that the kitten was not feral.
After arriving at Tree House, Director of Veterinary Services, Dr. Lynda
Ewald, discovered that Judo’s jaw was misaligned due to an old break
that had not been properly treated, and had already healed. He was
also suffering from a bad case of ear mites. Unfortunately, Judo’s jaw
could not be repaired, however it was obvious that it was causing him
difficulties, and he was unable to properly close his mouth. Based on
recommendations from an orthopedic surgeon, Dr. Ewald extracted
several of Judo’s teeth to help relieve pressure and allow him to close
his mouth. Additionally, several other teeth were in bad shape and
needed to be removed.
Judo is doing very well and, though his jaw is slightly misaligned, he
is otherwise completely healthy. It’s been frightening for Judo to go
JUDO
through all he has in the two short years of his life and then try to get
used to a new environment. He is still apprehensive, but has been
quick to make some feline friends. We’ve also seen that when people
approach Judo tenderly and with kindness, he enjoys gentle pets and
chin scratches. And, when he is feeling particularly comfortable with
a gentle person, his eyes slowly close, and he begins to softly purr.
Judo craves love, reassurance, and tenderness. We hope a caring
person will welcome Judo into their heart and home very soon.
PARMESAN
Parmesan and Gorgonzola were found living in a horrible hoarding
situation at just four months old. In August, their plight came to the
attention of our Community Cats Team which moved in to rescue
them. Immediately, we could tell that both kittens were in poor health
and needed care. While both were underweight and dehydrated, poor
Parmesan was in especially bad shape when he arrived at our clinic.
His right cornea was clouded and his left eye had been damaged from
a previous eye infection that had not been properly treated. The inside
of Parmesan’s right eyelid (the conjunctive tissue) had attached to
the surface of his eye. While we were able to detach much of the
conjunctive tissue from his cornea, the severity of the injury made
it impossible to remove it all. Parmesan’s eye has been improving
nicely, but he’ll never have a normal cornea, and the condition will
most likely return. We are, however, happy that we’ve been able to
restore some of his vision.
Recently, the two kittens were healthy enough to be released onto the
first floor of our Uptown Headquarters. A bundle of energy, Parmesan
tirelessly stalks sparkle balls, remarkably with great precision given
PARMESAN
his compromised eyesight, and darts around corners, people, cats,
you name it. He continues to find new places to explore (recently
performing a circus act of straddling the tops of two trash cans).
We’ve also come to realize what a caring brother Parmesan is as
he takes time away from his rambunctious play to check in on his
less confident sibling, Gorgonzola, providing him with comfort and
cuddles. These two wonderful kittens, who we comically refer to as
the “cheese” guys, bring much laughter and cuteness to our first
floor. Given their special bond, and all they’ve gone through together
in their short lives, we hope they will soon find a secure and loving
forever home together.
CODA
You may remember reading about Coda who, along with his mother and
five litter mates, was abandoned when someone moved and left them
behind. Thankfully, a Good Samaritan found them living in an empty
apartment and called us. Coda’s entire family was malnourished and
dehydrated, however Coda was the runt and had fared much worse than
his siblings. He was very ill and suffered from a severe eye infection and
a ruptured cornea. At first we thought that Coda was very young, given
his small size, but we soon learned that his diminished size was due in
part to neglect and a serious illness. Coda was diagnosed with a liver
shunt, a serious condition that can lead to death. He remained in our
medical isolation unit for several months, battling spiking fevers, then
falling temperatures as well as lethargy. It was touch and go, and we
often feared he would not survive. He suffered from episodes of altered
consciousness – a symptom of liver shunts – and further battled a
difficult upper respiratory infection that left him weakened and listless.
To make matters worse, he also struggled with a urinary tract infection.

OVERLOOKED BUT NOT FORGOTTEN
CONTINUED
CODA BEFORE
After two months, his body so weak and diminished, we thought he
was turning the corner and held our collective breath – however, it did
not last and Coda became critically ill. One morning, we found him
motionless in his cage, his breath shallow and slow. We were uncertain
if he would survive. Remarkably, Coda persevered. Unfortunately, his
eye had been damaged beyond repair and needed to be removed. After
five long months Coda began to stabilize and was finally healthy enough
to be released onto the first floor of our Headquarters. It didn’t take long
for Coda to find a friend in Whitman, a cat who had suffered cruel abuse
and permanent spinal damage after being thrown out of a window as a
kitten. Coda and Whitman can be found curled up together, grooming
one another. It has been a long and uncertain road for Coda, and the
odds were against him, but this now rambunctious, happy (if scrappylooking) cat is a testament to our strong belief that every life is worth
saving. Coda will be affected throughout his life by the liver shunt, but
he can live a long and happy life with medication and a loving home. It
is heartwarming to watch him play as if his brush with death is a distant
memory, and we hope he finds his forever home soon.

ALOOF, GRUMPY, DISGRUNTLED, FULL OF ATTITUDE,
ILL-TEMPERED…OR JUST MISUNDERSTOOD?
Many cats are adversely affected by change and loss, and the stress
that comes with it. At Tree House, we do our best to make the
shelter as cat-friendly and calm as possible. While life at Tree House
is far better than the fate of most cats who end up at “traditional”
shelters and certainly better than the unpredictable, and often times
dangerous, life on the streets, it can’t compare to the security and
comfort of a loving home. Uncertainty and fear can significantly
affect a cat’s demeanor, and it can be especially difficult for some
cats to get used to all the activity of shelter life. A “stressed” cat
can exhibit a variety of behaviors such as aggression, being easily
overstimulated, over or under grooming, weight loss or gain, being
in a constant state of alert, or withdrawing. Unfortunately, this can
lead individuals to mislabel these cats as aloof, feisty, ill-tempered,
shy, mean, grumpy, possessive, or any number of traits that, when
one looks more closely, is behavior which is a direct result of their
stressful environment. Sadly, many potential adopters will pass over
these cats for happier, livelier, shinier cats and not realize that in a
CODA AFTER
stable and loving home the joyful, affectionate, and compassionate
cat would emerge.
The following residents have lived through very difficult circumstances,
and are often misunderstood and mislabeled. While these cats can’t
speak French (or get their point across as Henri so humorously does),
we hope their stories will help shed some light (and perhaps change
some attitudes) on how stress, fear, unpredictability, change, loss,
and any number of factors can impact a cat’s behavior.
FALDO
As mentioned, the shelter environment can be an uncertain and
challenging adjustment for some cats, and Faldo is one such cat. He is
a sensitive guy who has had a difficult time in the shelter environment.
Often times, he seemingly disconnects as a way to cope, which can
cause him to be mislabeled as aloof or grumpy. Originally, Faldo was
discovered wandering around the parking lot of a forest preserve in
2009 by a Good Samaritan who rescued him and brought him to Tree
House. We believe he was about two years old at the time. While he
was friendly, Faldo was quite anxious during his check-in exam. When
he first arrived, he began to acclimate well to his new environment
and was quick to make friends with other cats. Faldo was at Tree
House for just over a year before being adopted. By all accounts, he
adjusted well into his new home.
Then, in February of 2013, Faldo was returned to us. His adopter
stated that Faldo and another cat in the home were not getting along.
It’s hard to say what was fully going on with the two cats or the
environment they were in, though it is unfortunate that it resulted in
Faldo’s return. When Faldo first came back to Tree House, he was a
confident and affectionate cat who enjoyed pets. He had a luscious,
full coat of orange fur that he obviously kept well groomed. After only
a few weeks, however, the reality of his situation seemed to settle
in, and it began to significantly affect him. Faldo’s grooming habits
changed dramatically; his fur was unkept, his tail began to look dirty,
and he began to over groom his legs, all of which can be signs of
stress in cats. Soon, we began to notice small patches of thinning fur
on his hind legs which grew to cover both of his haunches. We became
FALDO
increasingly concerned when Faldo began to rapidly lose weight and
appear emotionally distraught. He stopped enjoying attention from
his human caregivers and rarely wanted to interact with other cats.
Faldo no longer looks or acts like the brave and handsome cat that
we once knew. Often times, he can be found curled up by himself in
a cubby in his colony room. His appearance, along with the manner
in which he has withdrawn, causes him to be overlooked by visitors.
Far too often, when people see a cat like Faldo, they assume that is
all there is to them. We strongly believe that in a loving home, Faldo
would return to the vibrant and fun-loving cat we first met, and we
work to help individuals better understand how hard it can be for
many cats to adjust after losing their home. We’ve seen the other side
of Faldo, and he has his good days in which he is more open to the
world and cuddles with a roommate or plays with another younger
cat. At other times, Faldo will nudge his head into a visitor’s hand or
rub up against their shins. We hope an understanding adopter will
take the time to see this other side of Faldo as well, and give him a
chance to thrive in the forever home he deserves.
CHICA
Chica is often the first cat to greet visitors when they enter her
colony room. She stands on the table, craning her neck forward,
eyes wide with anticipation. If you offer her some attention, Chica is
a happy, purring lady. However, if another cat tries to join the party,
and take away some of that attention, she becomes very jealous. In
her anxiousness, Chica will hiss, swat, and growl at another cat who
crosses her path. Chica also struggles with being constrained for
simple procedures like a weight check. When Chica’s fear rises, and
she becomes overstimulated, it can take her quite a bit of time to calm
down. If visitors attempt to pet her while she is in this state, her tail
begins to flick wildly, alerting them that she is on guard and may swat.
Cats like Chica get an unfair reputation, and are often considered
mean, possessive, or ill-tempered. Yet, we can easily see that Chica’s
personality is a direct result of her reaction to her environment. When
the stressors are removed, we can see the sweet, yet sad girl who
is simply hungry for affection. Chica was originally brought to us
CHICA
in 2009, as a one-year-old stray with a wounded leg. Sweet and
attentive, it was immediately evident to us that she loved human
affection above all else. It can be challenging for a cat who has a
serious injury (and especially one who craves human contact) when
they can’t fully understand what is happening to them or why it hurts
when people touch them. Chica was adopted in February 2010. In
her home Chica was a lively girl, who loved to stalk toys and engage
in joyful playtime. Unfortunately, she was returned to us eight short
months later, when her adopter could no longer adequately care for
her due to financial difficulties.
In the three years since Chica has been back at Tree House, it has
been hard for her to adjust to the daily activity of shelter life. She is
ever on alert and is rarely seen sleeping, as if always keeping an eye
out for any perceived dangers. Chica has found a few playmates, and
even wrestles with and grooms her cat friends! We are certain that if
Chica was in a stable home where she felt safe, her defenses would
come down, and she’d settle into a more peaceful life…and finally
be secure enough to rest her head for a much-needed, long nap. We
hope a caring individual will spend enough time with Chica to see her
deep, affectionate side.
MARON
Maron was admitted to Tree House in 2011, when he was about seven
years old. He had not been neutered, and, based on his appearance,
it was evident that he had been through his fair share of fights while
living on the streets − he had a broken canine, scars throughout
his body, and several fresh bite wounds. The person who admitted
him had been feeding this weary guy for about two years when they
noticed his injuries were severe enough that he needed help.
It’s been four long years that Maron has lived at Tree House and,
while the exhausting, and often times dangerous, life on the street
was certainly not good for him, Maron has struggled with adapting to
a life full of activity and change. To be confined to a room with several
other cats, endure the daily foot traffic and activity so common in a
shelter, and to have to constantly meet new cats can take its toll on any
cat. Our commitment to a cageless environment is a key advantage

over life spent in a cage, but it can never compare to the comfort
of a home. Some space and stability would do wonders for Maron.
Currently, he often tucks himself away in a basket, in an attempt to
feel as secure as possible.
steps of our Uptown Headquarters...inside, we found gorgeous
Miel. She had vomited in the carrier, obviously out of sheer terror.
It was apparent to us that she was an older house cat. Being in
a totally foreign environment, suddenly surrounded by unfamiliar
humans, Miel understandably had her natural defenses up and was
difficult to handle. We discovered that Miel was dealing with several
health issues including hyperthyroidism. Thankfully, we’ve been
able to successfully treat this condition, and she no longer needs
medication for it. Unfortunately for poor Miel, she has struggled with
other health issues. Currently she is being treated for inflammatory
bowel disease and pancreatitis. She has also had a difficult time
adapting to shelter life.
Upon meeting Maron, he can appear grumpy or disinterested, and any
attempt to pet him may result in a swat or bite. But there is a secret
side to Maron; he loves being brushed. When approached slowly and
given a few gentle brush strokes, it is as if a magic wand has been
waved over him. At times he will rise and chin rub the brush, then
turn and ‘ask’ for body brushes. He paces back and forth enjoying full
body brushes which can graduate to full body pets. A contentment
comes across his face as he transforms from a sullen cat to one ready
for affection. Maron is often labeled as shy or reserved and doesn’t
always tolerate a lot of petting when approached directly, but enjoys
it greatly if he is feeling comfortable enough. As can be common with
cats that struggle to adjust, Maron dislikes being constrained – it
can trigger a natural survival instinct in cats and can be aggravated
when they are in an environment that is already uncomfortable for
them. During Maron’s first year at Tree House, he became friends
with another cat in his colony room. They would romp and play, and
sweetly groom one another – Maron was seemingly thrilled to be off
the streets. His extended time in the shelter, however, has worn on
him, and he typically keeps his distance from other cats. Given the
many fights he had while living on the street, it doesn’t surprise us that
Maron wants to avoid trouble. Unfortunately, Maron has developed
some health issues. He is battling early kidney failure and occasional
constipation, both of which can be aggravated by the stress of shelter
life. We know there is a gentle side to Maron, eager to emerge and
give much joy to the caring guardian who would finally give him the
chance he deserves to shine.
MIEL
We can’t imagine what it must be like to enjoy the comfort and
stability of a home for many years and to then, unexpectedly, end
up at a shelter, but that is exactly what happened to sweet Miel. On
a summer day in 2010, we discovered a carrier underneath the front
10
Abandoned house cats in particular crave a sense of normalcy and
safety in their territory and, when they arrive at Tree House, they will
try to find an area they can call their own. Given her health issues,
Miel resides on the first floor of our Uptown Headquarters which is
also home to approximately twenty five other cats, our administrative
offices, reception area, and resident clinic. Needless to say, there is
constant activity with staff, volunteers, and visitors not to mention all
the cats wandering around. Miel spends much of her time in our clinic,
where she feels the most comfortable and sees the same people every
day. She is defensive around other cats and will sometimes swat at
people if she is particularly on edge. This behavior is all about fear. It
is challenging to have Tree House be your retirement home, and Miel
reacts accordingly, though we are inspired by the progress she has
made over time.
Miel is often overlooked because she does not venture out to meet new
people and is often on the defense. However, we see her sweetness
regularly, as she kneads the soft blanket in a bed caringly prepared
for her or nuzzles against someone who greets her. Miel is one of the
most beautiful cats you will find, with her enormous green/gold eyes
and lovely tortoiseshell coat, and taking the time to get to know and
understand her is time well spent. The rewards of giving this scared
cat another chance at a forever home would be as great as the love
she has inside of her.

In recent months, we’ve been forced to turn individuals away simply

HAPPY ENDINGS
ANGELIQUE’S SECRET ADMIRER
Angelique was found outside, this past December, in Chicago’s
West Rogers Park neighborhood, with an injury to her tail. A
compassionate woman immediately took her to her veterinarian.
Angelique’s tail was swollen and had serious scabs; it was
apparent that the injury was a bite wound. Unable to keep her in
her home, this compassionate woman decided to board Angelique
at the clinic to allow her to receive the medical care she needed.
Angelique was sweet and patient during her treatment, and melted
the heart of a Tree House staffer, who also worked at the clinic.
Soon, Angelique’s tail was healed, and she was admitted to Tree
House to be placed on our adoption floor.
At two years old, Angelique loved to play and was a spunky cat,
full of energy. She enjoyed leaping across the room and diving
into tunnels then bursting out the other side, doing a back flip
to capture a nearby toy. Sometimes, however, her high energy
could get her into sticky situations. Angelique’s advances were
not appreciated by all, and if she would race across the room and
encounter a less playful cat, it could cause friction. Angelique
was frustrated, and we saw her become increasingly intimidated.
Sadly, we noticed Angelique begin to shut down. As the sensitivity
to her environment increased, she could become overstimulated
and would, at times, nip at people who casually started to pet her.
She could then be mislabeled as aggressive, feisty, sassy, or full of
attitude. In reality, she was simply responding to her environment.
Concerned about her continued regression, we moved Angelique
from our Uptown Headquarters to our Bucktown Branch Adoption
Center where there is less commotion. She remained in the back
“sanctuary room” to acclimate, however continued to struggle
with adjusting to other cats. She was moved to the front room to
see if that was a better fit, and in the hopes that she would have
more of an opportunity to be noticed by a potential adopter. In her
calmer moments, Angelique was the sweetest lady, closing her
eyes and soaking up all the attention she could get.
Little did we know that Angelique had a secret admirer. Mark had
been eyeing Angelique on our website for a couple of weeks.
Attracted to her bright eyes and pretty face, she reminded him of a
beloved cat of his who had passed away, and he would check back
periodically to see if her photo was still posted. Finally, he realized
that he simply had to come in and meet her. From the moment he
14
entered, Mark was taken by Angelique’s lovely features. Having
recently been released to the front room, Angelique was busy
exploring and investigating her new surroundings and less
than impressed by the attention of this unfamiliar human. Poor
Angelique was experiencing yet another change; her guard was
up, and she was on the defense. Initially, Mark was, admittedly,
a bit taken aback by her bold attitude. Fortunately for Angelique,
Mark was the type of individual who was willing to take the time to
get to know the wonderful cat behind the fear and defensiveness
– plus, he had already fallen for her and decided to listen to his
heart. On November 1st, Mark adopted Angelique. Beyond simply
finding a cat a home, we counsel individuals on methods they can
use to help a cat acclimate into their new home; especially cats like
Angelique. We gave Mark a great deal of information and advice
to help make the transition as smooth as possible for both. We
are excited to learn that Angelique has acclimated very quickly to
her new home. Mark shared that he placed her in his bathroom
(we recommend that, initially, individuals place a cat in a small
room to allow them to adjust, then slowly allow them to explore
the rest of the house). Instead of days, it only took a few hours
before Angelique was ready to explore. She investigated every
nook and cranny, and then curled up to take a nap. Mark has
been thrilled and impressed with how well she has been doing.
By the first night, Angelique had claimed her sleeping spot at the
foot of Mark’s bed, and has continued ever since. Mark could not
be happier, and is glad he adopted her. Angelique eagerly greets
Mark at the door when he comes home and loves pets. She has
even jumped into his lap! While she has her limits when being
petted, she makes her boundaries known, and Mark listens and
respects those boundaries. We are confident that as Angelique’s
trust increases, she’ll become less prone to overstimulation. We
are so happy that Angelique, who has been renamed Priscilla, has
found a caring guardian and a loving home as a cherished solo cat
with ample room to run, jump, and express the full joy for life she
has inside…as well as a safe place to let her guard down and be at
ease – something every cat deserves!

A BITTERSWEET ENDING – REMEMBERING CARTIGAN
It was back in 1999 that Cartigan first came to Tree House. Her
mother was a stray who was rescued the day she gave birth to
Cartigan and her littermates. Cartigan went into foster care and
socialized easily. She was a fun-loving, outgoing kitten who
quickly caught the eye of an adopter. She adjusted quickly in her
new home and got along with the other cat in the household. That
was the last we heard about Cartigan until 2012…thirteen years
later, when Cartigan’s original adopter returned her, stating that
she was moving somewhere that did not allow cats.
We cannot know what happened to Cartigan in those thirteen years;
her adopter said that Cartigan was no longer fond of people and
would not allow anyone to pet her. It is heartbreaking to consider
how hard it must have been for Cartigan to be returned to a shelter
after living her entire life in a home. Even sadder is the thought that
this once friendly, playful kitten was now a shadow of her former
self, and we didn’t know why. When she first arrived, while she
was understandably anxious and afraid, we found that Cartigan
was starved for attention. Initially, we saw a lovely spark in her
eye; however we saw that spark quickly dim as time went on. She
struggled with a number of health issues and spent the majority of
her time in either our Development or Executive Director’s Office
curled up in a bed under a desk, not moving or venturing out. Over
time, volunteers would find success with caressing Cartigan’s
cheek with a Cat Charmer, and members of the Development staff
were able to get in chin rubs and small pets. It was disheartening
to witness this gentle cat so despondent.
A little over a year after she was returned, we received a call from a
dear friend of Tree House, Dr. Susan Weisberg. Dr. Weisberg is one
of our wonderful adopters and foster parents dedicated to the art of
cat socialization. She had read and re-read Cartigan’s information
on our website and could no longer stay away. She came to visit
Cartigan and knew she would take her home. Dr. Weisberg shared
that soon after arriving to her new home, Cartigan would climb
into a window bed and sleep in the sun, enjoying the fresh air. Dr.
Weisberg reported that, “Everyday, we see tiny improvements, and
steps forward in Cartigan’s socialization process. We have never
gotten so much joy from a pet, for less of an investment of time
and energy. She constantly purrs for us, and lets us pet and brush
her. Truly, we all adore her. Our two other cats have visited her,
and they are all fine together.” Within a few short weeks, Cartigan
began to explore the entire second floor of the house. She also
seemed to have a little of a Goldilocks complex as Dr. Weisberg
shared that she would find Cartigan in different beds throughout
the house.
At the time we were finalizing Cartigan’s Happy Endings’ story,
we received incredibly sad news that Cartigan had passed away.
Dr. Weisberg told us that Cartigan had become very weak and
her appetite had dropped off. She learned that Cartigan was in
intractable heart failure. Dr. Weisberg kindly wanted us to still
include Cartigan’s story. It is a bittersweet story, however there
is much happiness that Cartigan found a caring home to live out
her final days and was surrounded by people who loved her. Dr.
Weisberg shared, “There is a special joy that comes with adopting
a senior cat. They ask for so little, and appreciate such simple,
basic provisions. Perhaps Cartigan’s story might be motivating to
others. I watched Cartigan on the Tree House website for months,
thinking ‘someone else’ would take her. Now I am so very, very
sorry that we didn’t get her sooner. That is our only regret--and it
is a truly big regret. She just needed a heating pad, a window bed,
and her own quiet space. As sad as this is, I still am very happy
that we had her almost two full months. She had really happy days
here. She deserved these few peaceful days. Our whole family here
is really, really sad. She gave us great joy.” It is clear that Cartigan
was loved immensely and well cared for, and we are so grateful
she found an incredible ‘forever’ home.
We share this Happy Ending in loving memory of Cartigan and
in honor of senior cats like her that deserve a second chance.
After taking time to grieve, Dr. Weisberg plans to adopt another
senior cat to honor Cartigan’s memory. We hope that this story
will inspire others to do the same.

Charlotte knew she was ours from the moment she picked us out

us after seven hard years on the street, and before being rescued
by Tree House, she was overflowing with sweetness and pure love
every minute of her life, and we loved her back with all our might.
We felt that all of our lives, the three of us had been working toward
the too-short time that we spent as a family—we were meant for
her, and she for us. For ten perfect months, we three were the
happiest living beings on the planet, spending our nights with little
Charlotte sleeping on our chests and holding our hands in her paw.
We will love you forever little one—thank you for finding us in time.

Thank you for reading
Tree House News. After
enjoying this, you may be
asking yourself why you
ever read anything that is
not related to cats. This is
a legitimate question.
In fact, why would you
do anything that did not
help you serve your cats
with more facility? You
are aware of your life’s
purpose, are you not?
