Mike Pellett’s 1942 Dodge Ram 1/2-ton Pickup

T
his is a tale about a 1942 Dodge Ram 1/2-ton pickup
that should not exist. Mike Pellett of Langley is only
the second owner, and his acquiring the truck is a tale
of not always following the rules. Pellett heard from
family friends of Pellett’s dad about this cool truck in a
barn in Red Deer, Alberta. The same barn the truck had
always been parked in for 42 years. The owner Peter
Tanasiychuk was 19 years old when he placed the factory order for a brand new blue Dodge Ram Pickup. The
stoppage of civilian vehicles due to World War II efforts
meant young Tanasiychuk got his deposit back and the
order was supposedly cancelled.
Due to a lucky accident, the Chrysler plant built the truck
to Tanasiychuk’s specs and eventually filled the order
by shipping the truck to the Calgary Dodge dealership
after 16 months. He was told the news of the dark blue,
shiny new 1942 Dodge pickup via telegram....one year
after he got his deposit back. It was the only new truck
the dealership had seen in 14 months; some trucks had
been sent to various Canadian dealerships but this is the
very “rare for War years” Ram two-wheel drive 1/2-ton
truck. One source says that during World War II, over
250,000 3/4-ton 4x4 Dodge trucks were built, but only
1,500 4x2 1/2-tons were.
While growing up outside of Fort St. John in Northern
B.C., Pellett and his brother Jody were hard workers
and had lots of cash from their traplines. Mike also had
his own little business, “Mike’s Custom Slab Signs,”
where he created custom slab signs out of diagonallycut logs cut into 2-to-3-inch-thick ovals out of logs right

off the property where he grew up. There
were not lots of cool cars for sale in his
area, so off to the big city he went to get
his truck.
Living out of town on the Hudson Hope
road, he and a buddy hopped on the
Greyhound bus with a pocket full of cash
and rode the 9 or 10 hours to Red Deer
to make the deal. The truck was in the
infamous “barn” but had not run in a few
years. After getting her running and signing transfer papers for the whopping sum
of $4,500, Pellett drove the truck home
to Fort St John with the owner’s expired
Alberta plates. The only wrinkle was that
Pellett was only 15, almost 16, and he
neglected to tell his Dad he was buying
the truck...and driving it home.
When he turned 16, he drove to town to
get his learner’s driving licence and two
weeks later, he drove back to town to take
his road test. The elderly lady giving the
test stared in disbelief as Pellett drove in
and expected to take the test. She sternly
proceeded to lecture the young lad and
in the end strictly said “I did not just see
that!” and on their way they went and proceeded with the road test. Pellett almost
got a perfect score and drove home with
a brand new B.C. driver’s licence and
was now finally legit...for the time being.

have been worth a fortune to a collector. That ship has sailed, and after he got the driver’s
licence, it was a stock daily driver....for a few weeks.
The truck was powered by a flathead straight-six cylinder with a manual three-speed column
shift....or “three on the tree” transmission. Soon, a front clip from a Nova with drum brakes
was installed with a Chevy ten-bolt rear end with leafs springs out back. The first motor was
a Ford 351 Windsor and then a 289 both backed by C4 transmissions and both eventually
blown up.
Moving down to White Rock, B.C. in November of 1986 to stay with his grandparents, Pellett
was blown away with all the available high-performance parts and knowledge, and started on
his first of four 340 cu. in. blocks from various Mopar donor cars. Right away, the truck came
apart and the process of turning it into a capable street machine began.
The present engine is a natural progression of modified Mopar 340 cu. in. mills and came from
a 1969 Dart. It is highly modified with 7.85:1 Ross pistons, huge Childs and Albert aluminum
rods, solid roller cam, forged steel crankshaft breathing through a 6-71 blower and a couple

of big 600-CFM four-barrel carbs. This motor was built by Terry Kershaw Performance in
2009. The power gets delivered rearward through a Chrysler 727 transmission with a fourgear planetary spragg from a Hemi transmission, TCI reverse manual shift body and a TCS
torque converter.
The “Drive Products” driveshaft, thanks to Dale Scott, hooks up to a Dave Binning-narrowed
“Ford” Currie 9-Plus rear end stuffed full of 4:30 gears with Detroit Locker and Strange 35spline axles. All the twists are kept in place by a 2x3 tube frame with four-link suspension
There also never seemed a reason to get a radio, but
there is a big tach mounted on the top of the dash, and
every other possible gauge is suitably located to be read
easily when the going gets hairy. With 647 horsepower
in this mill, things do get hairy. Quite some while ago,
a few engine blocks back, Pellett ran an E.T. of 11.91
with a lot fewer ponies at Ashcroft’s Oldtime drags.
The low 4:30 gears and the 33-inch rear tires allow for
comfortable cruising speeds of 57 mph. Going faster is
possible...but so are bleeding ears.
Still, the truck has gone places, many times with The
Torchmen Rod and Kustom Klub which Pellett has been
a longstanding proud member of for nearly 22 years.
Places like Yakima, Seattle, let’s not forget Tacoma
with brother Wayne Beenham, Penticton and the many
wild Ashcroft race weekends everyone used to love.
The tunnels in the Fraser Canyon seemed to come
alive when Pellett’s screaming 647 ponies and his Bro
and coilover shocks. To keep it all cool, Pellett measured up a new Cheyenne Cody’s amazing Pro Street 1936 3-window came out to

was built at Fort Fabrication with a special thanks to Brad
Astbury. The interior dash pieces are hand-fabricated by Pellett out of brass, and chrome plated. The seat is the original
1942 seat and in 1992 it was covered in Velour, and you
better hang on as seat belts never were an option in ‘42!
The paint was picked from a Harley owned by the great
bodyman / painter Gary Minion. He had a profound impact
on Pellett’s life and project and they are still bros to this day.
The paint is called Dupont Imron Sovereign Blue Metallic,
and it was sprayed back in 1988, early on in its six-year
transformation from mildly warm farm truck to all-out Blown
Pro-Street menace. It finally rolled on Weld Wheels Prostars
and there never seemed a good reason not to do a burnout, so the tires get changed up frequently. Pellett got lots
of his parts from John Duda of Mopac when they were on
Kingsway, and also from Summit racing.

Flaming River has designed a direct-fit power rack-and-pinion
conversion system for the 1967-72 Chevrolet C-10 pickup
trucks that allows the cradle mounting assembly bolts to fit into
the original mounting location of the steering box and idler arm
assembly, which means there’s no need for cutting, drilling or
welding. The mounting plate is made from 3/8-in. thick steel for
added durability, and the all-new front steer power tubular-style
rack-and-pinion eliminates worn-out steering box and linkage.
