Summer/August 2013 Rambler
Provide, Preserve,
Promote and Enjoy
Traditional Jazz
Thanks to all of you who chose to
be a band or musician sponsor last
year and in previous years. You have
helped to offset the expenses of
bringing the finest bands and
musicians available to our Festival.
We heard your voices loud and clear
and we will present a lineup of Trad
Jazz favorites and some new variations
to accommodate the many swing
dancers.
It is easy to become a sponsor at
the $250/500 level. For a $500 donation
you will receive:
• 2 5-day all-event badges
• Preferred seating in all venues
• Web and Program recognition
• Invitation to Sponsors’ Reception
• Free parking at the Town & Country
Hotel
• Recognition of your sponsorship
when your band performs
• Access to the musicians’
hospitality room
• One-year AFCDJS membership
The difference between the price of
a 5-day badge and the sponsorship is
tax deductible. To start the process,
first you select a band or musician you
wish to sponsor, then decide if you
want to have 1 badge ($250) or 2 badges
($500), and you finish by sending a
check with a note indicating your name,

Summer (August) 2013
Swing Out at Annual SD Fest
When Swing Dancers participate
in a Jazz festival, it really livens up the
weekend! The 34th Annual San Diego
Jazz Fest will salute our friends in the
Swing Dance community with a
special “Swing Dance Extravaganza”
on Saturday night, Nov. 30, 2013 in
the Golden Ballroom of the Town &
Country Resort and Convention
Center in San Diego’s Hotel Circle.
The featured bands will be Glenn
Crytzer and his Syncopators and
Stompy Jones. Both groups are
renowned for playing perfect
repertoires and perfect tempos for
dancers, yet each band has a unique
style and approach to Swing music.
The Extravaganza, organized by
2toGroove’s Margie Adams and SDJF
Executive Director Paul Daspit, will
begin at 9:30pm with continuous music
and performances by the SwingFX
Dance Team until 12:30am on Sunday,
Dec. 1.
Leading up to the Extravaganza,
the Festival will present a “Battle of
the Bands” between the Syncopators
and Stompy Jones at 5:45pm, then
performances by two more bands that
the dancers follow — The Red Skunk
Band and Sue Palmer and her Motel
Swing Orchestra. From Saturday
evening until early Sunday morning,
the Golden Ballroom promises to be
the best spot in Southern California
for Lindy, Shag, Balboa and all the
other vintage dance steps!
Fans of small-band Swing may
enjoy the sets played by Ray
Skjelbred and his Cubs, the Dave
Bennett Quartet and the Reynolds
Brothers. In addition to Swing music,
the Festival program includes
performances by some of the best
Traditional Jazz bands to be heard
anywhere — The High Sierra Jazz
Band, Grand Dominion Jazz Band,
Yerba Buena Stompers, Bob Schulz’s
Frisco Jazz Band, Original Wildcat
Jass Band, Buck Creek Jazz Band,
Titanic Jazz Band and the Night
Blooming Jazzmen.

Festival 34, An Abundance of Talent!
By Jim McNaughton
While looking at the lineup for this
year’s Festival I became excited and
concerned. As a fan how can I possibly
catch all of the sets? We have the
largest number and best selection of
Trad Jazz Bands in years as well as a
variety of outstanding bands and
musicians. Ray Skjelbred Cubs are
new and the Bob Schulz Frisco Jazz
Band, High Sierra and Buck Creek are
back after an absence.
WOW! I can’t miss the Pianorama
with all the great musicians and two
newcomers Paolo Alderighi and Jason
Wanner. Paolo Alderighi will team
with favorite Stephanie Trick for two
sets. For a preview of the pairing you
can go to YouTube and search for
their version of “Running Wild.”
Popular performers Bob Draga and
Brady McKay will be doing guest
appearances with a number of the
bands. The 34th Festival will surely be
one of our biggest and best!
make hotel reservations at the Town &
Country and to sponsor a Festival
performance venue, band and/or
musician. Whatever you do, make sure
to attend this event, which promises
to be a full weekend of swingin’,
stompin’, Fidgety Feet!
We were disappointed to learn that
Chloe will not be with us for the first
time in many years. She is touring
Europe the month of November with
the Pokey LaFarge band. However
she is sponsoring the Glenn Crytzer
Band who will be featured in our
Saturday Extraganza. I will definitely
make time for the Extravaganza which
also will include Stompy Jones, Sue
Palmer, and the Red Skunk Band — a
swing dancer’s delight! Hope to see
all of you in November.

had a booth to promote our festival in

Uptown Rhythm Makers under
the leadership of Bob Andersen

perform on the Fountain Stage.
Other band members included
Bruce Vermazen (cornet), Jim Fiedler

Ways to Support Traditional Jazz
Since many of you are approaching
the time for the required distribution
from your IRA, you may want to
consider donating all or part of the
money as a charitable gift. The Relief
Act of 2012 ensured that in 2013
anyone age 70½ or older is allowed to
donate directly to charity without
paying income tax on that required
distribution.
You can do this by donating stock
in your IRA account or your broker
can transfer funds by check from your
account. The amount may be counted
as part of the mandatory required
minimum distribution and no federal
income tax is due as a result of this
charitable donation.
This donation could also be in the
form of a band or musician
sponsorship. A charitable gift is a
great way to see your dollars go to
work right now!
For additional information, check
with your tax and financial advisor. If
you have any questions about
sponsorship,
contact
Jim
McNaughton at 619-435-0806 or
[email protected] You'll
be glad you did!

program. Besides Spanier and Howard,
the high-energy band on this occasion
included Joe Sullivan, piano; Pops
Foster, bass; Earl Watkins, drums; and
the young trombonist Bob Mielke.
Howard’s onscreen expressions are
a joy to watch; especially as he uses
body language to indicate the rhythms
used on Jelly Roll Morton’s record of
“Someday, Sweetheart” to Mielke, and
when he sticks his tongue out — on
national television!
In 1966 Howard toured Europe with
the New Orleans All Stars. This group
was led by British trumpeter Keith
Smith and included Alvin Alcorn,
trumpet; Jimmy Archey, trombone;
Alton Purnell, piano; Pops Foster,
bass; and Cie Frazier, drums.
Unfortunately, following the tour, he
suffered a stroke and was forced to
give up playing music. He developed
a brain tumor and died in September,
1966.
Darnell Howard surely led one of
the most interesting and rewarding
careers in Classic Jazz, from pre-Jazz
days with W.C. Handy to appearances
with the most respected bandleaders
of the Classic Jazz era and the
Traditional Jazz Revival. He came up
with a distinct, and instantly
recognizable style that will always
appeal to Jazz fans with good taste.
Fortunately, those who read this article
may enjoy the many highlights of
Howard’s career since — at the time of
this writing — all of his recordings are
currently available on CD!

PASSINGS
Wayne Jones
(1933-2013)
by Hal Smith
AFCDJS Artistic Director
Wayne Jones, an icon of
Traditional Jazz drumming, passed
away on May 20, 2013 in Elmhurst,
Illinois as a result of complications
from Parkinson’s Disease.
Jones began a long association
with the Salty Dogs Jazz Band in the
late 1950s, when the group was still a
student band at Purdue University.
When the Dogs became a professional
working band, Jones was the drummer.
His approach to Traditional Jazz
drumming was to play lightly, with a
lift — gently urging the ensemble and
soloists to swing. Jones often used
ride cymbal, Chinese cymbal and hihats in addition to the press rolls,
choke cymbal and blocks that are
usually associated with the music. His
distinct sound was a hallmark of the
Salty Dogs, as well as other Traditional
groups he worked with, such as
Waldo’s Gutbucket Syncopators, Bob
Schulz’s Frisco Jazz Band, the West
End Jazz Band, Ernie Carson’s Capital
City Jazz Band and the Red Rose
Ragtime Band.
Wayne Jones was Turk Murphy’s
favorite drummer, and though he never
worked full-time with the band, he did
play with the band on special
occasions, including a concert at Grace
Cathedral in San Francisco and a
concert at Carnegie Hall, just prior to
Murphy’s death.
In addition to his work with
Traditional groups, Jones also played
big band music with the Chicago
Footwarmers and small-band swing
with James Dapogny’s Chicago Jazz
Band, the Neo-Passe’ Jazz Band,
Soprano Summit and the HedgesDeMichael Swingtet. San Diego Jazz
Festival attendees heard Jones in years
past with the West End Jazz Band,
James Dapogny’s Chicago Jazz Band
and Bob Schulz’s Frisco Jazz Band.
Besides his skill as a drummer, he was
an excellent writer, whose reviews
appeared in Down Beat, Coda and
Mississippi Rag.
Wayne Jones is survived by his

with Lu Watters’ Yerba Buena Jazz
Band at Hambone Kelly’s and also
took part in an early recording session
with ex-Yerba Buena trumpeter Bob
Scobey. (The session was originally
issued on the Jazz Man label as
“Darnell Howard and his Frisco
Footwarmers”). Howard also played
occasional sessions with the other
member of the Yerba Buena triumvirate
— Turk Murphy. A trip back to the
Midwest resulted in a number of gigs
with a young ensemble that would
eventually become one of the greatest
of all Traditional Jazz bands — The
Salty Dogs. Hearing Darnell Howard
with the Salty Dogs made a lasting
impression on a young Chicago
clarinetist who would eventually
become the Dogs’ regular reedman —
Kim Cusack.
After returning to San Francisco,
Howard settled in for a long stay at
wife, Charlotte. His drum style has
been a major inspiration to this writer,
and also to several drummers whose
names should be familiar to readers of
the Jazz Rambler including Chris
Tyle, John Gill, Steve Apple, Kevin
Dorn, Clint Baker and Ray Templin.
Jones made numerous recordings
which were issued on GHB,
Jazzology, Stomp Off, Delmark and
Discovery. Most are available on CD
and are definitely worth seeking out
— especially to hear the masterful
drumming!
SUMMER (AUGUST) 2013
Club Hangover with a six-piece band
led by his old colleague Earl Hines.
The years in the Bay Area were
musically rewarding for the middleaged Darnell Howard. Besides the
steady work with Hines, he freelanced
on record dates with Kid Ory, Barbara
Dane, Don Ewell and others. The
Ewell sessions, recorded for Good
Time Jazz, featured Howard as the
only horn with Ewell on piano, Minor
Hall on drums and (on several cuts)
Pops Foster on bass. Unsurprisingly,
this was some of Howard’s best
playing on record. “South Side Strut”
and “Bush Street Scramble” illustrate
his swinging phrasing and his ability
to go from a bubbling penultimate
chorus to a boiling rideout. “Love Me
Or Leave Me” and “Am I Blue”
showcase his thick, blurry tone in the
low register as well as the joyous,
unexpected whoops into the upper
register.
Howard was once again freelancing
in 1964, when he met the young pianist
Ray Skjelbred. Skjelbred was a
student of Johnny Wittwer and Burt
Bales, both acquaintances of Howard,
and was fascinated by the music of
pianist Joe Sullivan, who had played
intermissions at Club Hangover when
Howard played there with Earl Hines.
Once, Skjelbred and Howard went to
hear Sullivan play intermissions at
Turk Murphy’s nightclub Earthquake
McGoon’s. When the band returned
to the stage, Sullivan climbed the stairs
to the balcony with a drink in each
hand. Howard observed, “He’s good
— unless he plays nose piano,”
drooping his head to indicate
Sullivan’s condition after too many
double highballs.
Skjelbred took Howard to visit
many friends in the Bay Area and was
fortunate to play a couple of sessions
with the clarinetist during the summer
of 1964. Once he asked what would
happen if someone called Howard to
play a gig on violin. Howard replied,
“You’d see such scramblin’!”
Apparently he “scrambled” at least
once during this time period. Jazz
author Richard Hadlock recalled
hearing Howard on violin, with Elmer
Snowden on banjo and Pops Foster

Darnell Howard - Rejuvinated Career For the Revival
(This is a continuation from the
Spring 2013 Rambler of a series of
biographies of great traditional jazz
musicians. The series started with the
March/April 1991 issue and was
developed by Rambler founding
publisher and Board Member, the late

By Hal Smith
AFCDJS Artistic Director
In 1937, Darnell Howard left Earl
Hines’ Orchestra. He could already
look back with pride on a career that
included appearances with W.C.
Handy, Jelly Roll Morton, James P.
Johnson, King Oliver and, of course
Hines. But within a few short years,
he added two more illustrious names
to his resumé after working with
Fletcher Henderson and Coleman
Hawkins!
PAGE 16
During World War II, Howard led
his own groups in Chicago, and also
operated a small business. The
Traditional Jazz Revival of the 1940s
SUMMER (AUGUST) 2013
really helped to kickstart Howard’s
career. In 1945 he traveled to California
where he played and recorded with
the revitalized Kid Ory Creole Jazz
Band. Howard is heard to good
advantage on the Ory’s Crescent
recordings — particularly on “Down
Home Rag.”
Following the brief stay with Ory,
he returned to Chicago where he
worked with Doc Evans and in the
house band at the Bee Hive, which
also included such luminaries as Don
Ewell, Lee Wiley, Miff Mole and Baby
Dodds.
In 1948, Howard joined Muggsy
Spanier’s band, performing at the
Chicago Railroad Fair and also making
a trip to San Francisco, to play at Doc
Daugherty’s famous Club Hangover.
While in the Bay Area, Howard sat in
