Where will you be on the week of the Whale Shark Moon?
Photo by Robert’s Grove Dive Center
In the month of April, during what we
like to call the Whale Shark Moon, most
Placencia area dive shops reported
seeing an average of 3-4 of these gentle
giants a day! Of course along with the
“big guys’ while on these trips guests
also saw several different species of
fish, turtles, dolphins, rays and other
sharks.
A true plethora of aquatic
activity! Our May Whale Shark Moon
begins May 14 t h – do you have your trip
booked?!

The Placencia Tourism Center is thrilled to showcase an Anton Leslie original painting for the
2011 Placencia Lobsterfest T-shirt design. Look out for the “Meet the Artist” article in next
month’s issue of the Breeze. This talented man created the Placencia Lobsterfest design but also
the Placencia Mooring Masters t-shirt design!
Spots on this year’s Placencia Lobsterfest shirt are still available! Who has already taken a spot
on the 2011 shirt? Atlantic Bank, Barefoot Bar, Doran’s Services, Whipray Caye Lodge,
Wallen’s Market, Maya Beach Bistro, Seahorse Dive Shop, The Placencia Hotel & Residences, Moorings Belize, Sunsail, Tarpon Caye Lodge, & Leslie Tech Service! Our sleeve
sponsors are Insurance Corporation of Belize & Belize Bank! Who will be next? It could
be you!
A new kind of fishing tournament for Lobsterfest!
Placencia Lobsterfest is excited to announce that we will be incorporating a LIONFISH
TOURNAMENT on Saturday, June 25th, 2011 into our schedule of events for this year’s festival.
Lionfish are an invasive predatory fish that is making the warm waters off shore their stomping
grounds. Partnering with the Placencia Tour Guide Association and Southern Environmental
Association, the Lobsterfest committee wants to help create the much needed awareness of this
unwanted species living in our waters and destroying our sea life and feel as if Lobsterfest is the

Mark Usher and John Flowers were chosen to implement Placencia BTIA’s
2020 Initiative from a field of twelve strong applicants.
What direction should development take?
Consultants chosen for Placencia
BTIA’s Peninsula 2020 Initiative
A team of consultants has been
selected to implement the Placencia
BTIA’s Peninsula 2020 initiative.
Mark Usher and John Flowers of
Belize City were chosen from a
strong field of twelve applicants,
largely on their ability to combine
scientific skills and relate well to
the peninsula’s range of residents.
“We were impressed by their
commonsense approach,”
commented 2020 steering
committee member Dave Vernon,
“ and we have every confidence
that the results will have far
reaching effects on the
sustainable development of the
peninsula.”
Peninsula 2020 is an exercise,
made possible by a grant from the
World Wildlife Fund, that seeks to
establish a broad consensus among
all the residents of the Placencia
Peninsula on the direction
development should take over the
next decade. That consensual
vision, which covers a wide range
of economic, social and
environmental issues like mass
versus low impact tourism, crime
and mangrove preservation, will
then be incorporated into a
document that will inform
investors, government and social
partners as to the priorities of the
people who live here. “Most people
know what they don’t want,” says
PBTIA Chairman Stewart Krohn.
“It’s a little more complicated
trying to be proactive and figure out
what it is we want.”
And that complicated task will be
the job of Flowers and Usher. The
pair has already met with the 2020
steering committee to set out their
work plan which will run through
August. So how will they figure out
the desires of area residents?
According to the consultants they
will conduct individual interviews,
meet with small focus groups,
implement a random survey and
hold public meetings in Placencia,
Seine Bight and Maya Beach/
Plantation. Once the vision
document is created it will be
presented to the entire community
for discussion and ratification. “In
many ways the process is just as
important as the final result,”
points out Flowers. “Although
they inhabit a single land mass, the
peninsula’s three distinct residential
and cultural groups do not always
acknowledge a common destiny.
Just planting that seed is a
significant accomplishment.”
Over the next several months Mark
Usher and John Flowers will spend
significant time working on the
peninsula. It is hoped that residents
will welcome them and speak with
clarity and conviction on the kind
of place they want their children
and grandchildren to inherit.
The goal of this tournament is to
catch as many lionfish as possible.
Also to bring awareness that
lionfish are an edible fish and if
handled properly and once
cleaned, can be eaten.
The
tournament will be restricted
exclusively to Gladden Spit and
Silk Cayes Marine Reserve.
Registration of boat with a max of
six (6) guides or fishermen includes
a captain. Cost of registration is
$100.00 Bze. Participants either
need to register as guides/divers or

All divers using tanks must have a
basic open water certification and

time.
All guides must have a valid tour
guide license and must be able to
present this upon spots checks.

have a valid fishing license and can
only go to the areas that are not in
the national parks.
Tournament will be open to foreign
visitors who wish to participate but
must be accompanied by a license
tour guide or diver during any dive.
[Visitors must have at least an
Advance Open Water Certification
to participate in the tournament] but

in order to get approval. Tridents
can be obtained from Mr. Dale
Godfrey at a cost of $25.00. Free

landed whole. Submission station
opens at 3pm for inspection by
tournament officials in front of
Lobsterfest tents.
Participants must select their largest
and smallest lionfish to submit for
those prize categories.
All fish must be counted and
weighed for those prizes categories.

release form before tournament.
Each boat must have on board a

anytime during the one day of
tournament.
Dead line for submission will be

Tracy Eiley organizes the annual Beachfront
Easter Hunt to the delight of local children
Tracy Eiley organized the annual 2011 Beachfront Easter Egg Hunt, but
credits community members and their devoted support for making it all
possible. In addition to dying over 1,000 hard boiled eggs, Tracy and her
helpers had over 100 kids decorating sacks in which to collect them,
making Easter hats, enjoying face painting and several other age
appropriate games that kept the children engaged for several hours. The
children hid the eggs for one another and then raced out on the beach to
find them. Tracy would like to thank all the donors and community
members who helped out. A special thank you goes to Kathy Anglin
who is Tracy’s sidekick at the many children’s activities she spearheads.
When asked why she does it, Tracy replies, “I just love these kids,

everyone of them.”
It all started with two little lines.
Two incredible pink lines that
told me: “nothing will ever be
the same again”. As you may
already know, expecting a child
can be the most life-altering,
metamorphic experience of a
lifetime. As we begin to plan for
our little angel’s grand arrival,
we fall in love with all those
teeny-tiny booties, itsy-bitsy
hats, and all those adorable
matching outfits we see in
stores. This is exactly what
happened as I was shopping for
my daughter in little boutiques
of Montreal.
I was overcome by a surge of
inspiration for a new business.
My goal: to bring the best in
baby and infant products to my
beautiful home of Placencia. My
design concept: to create a
boutique decor that will bring
back those magical, dream-like
feelings we once felt as
children...just like in a candy
shop!
Hannah Cowell of
Platinum Designs guided me
through the creative process.
Along with West Construction,
we achieved my goal of
transforming a two-story
Mennonite house into the most
charming, playful, and sweet
boutique in the world...and it
turned out even better than I
could have ever imagined.
Papaya Boutique is the first of
its kind in Placencia to cater to
your young one's individual
personality by offering a wide
selection of top-of-the-line
clothes, layette, toys, and
fashion accessories, for sizes
newborn to 7T.
From our named brands
selections (Baby Gap, Jelly Cat
toys, Old Navy, GUND,
Children’s Place, Fisher Price,
Sesame Street, Kushies, Teddy
Boom...), to our “Pre-Loved”
collection of gently used
clothing, you will be sure to find
that special something for your
little ones, no matter what your
budget may be. We are also
very proud to present our very
own ‘Baby Papaya’ line of
clothing, designed and
‘Handmade with love in
Belize’. All our exclusive
garments and accessories are
handcrafted from locally
purchased materials, and sewn
by professional Belizean
seamstresses to the highest
standards of quality.
Our personalized customer
service and attention to detail
will make your shopping

the time to cater to each
customer’s specific needs.

VA-WHOOMP! Palmettos explode
into flames in Maya Beach fire
By Barnacle Bill
Up here in Maya Beach we still have plenty of vacant lots
that are raw bush/jungle. We have lived in-between two
jungle lots for years until recently someone purchased the lot
to the south of us. The clearing of that lot has begun
although it is at a very slow pace.
Several days ago, a young man showed up and began his day
of chopping grass and weeds. He cleared a small patch and
had the debris piled up for burning. He started a small fire
and seemed to be aware that it was very dry and windy as he
paid attention to his little fire.
Then he left for the day. If you have never heard a Palmetto
patch catch fire, well it sounds like VA-WHOOMP! I looked
out the window and saw 20ft high flames!
Adriane called the fire dept and all our

It only took the fire truck 10 minutes to
make the trip up here and they had
this fire under control very quickly! We were all very
concerned that this fire could have jumped the road or just
headed south causing lots of problems.
We are all very grateful for the Placencia Volunteer Fire

to thank all who helped with hoses and buckets!

Pier reconstruction start
scheduled for this September
Two years of discussion and planning are now complete.
On Wednesday, April 27, 2011 Charles Leslie, Placencia Village
Chairman, on behalf of the Placencia Village Council and the People of
Placencia, signed the Memorandum of Understanding/Framework
Agreement between the Ministry of Tourism, Civil Aviation and Culture
and Belize Tourism Board for the rebuilding of the public pier and
promenade.
“This step makes it official for the project to move forward. The next step
will be for the Government of Belize to issue a public bid for a contractor for
the project,” according to Mr. Leslie.
Mr. Leslie continued, “Construction is expected to start in August or
September of 2011 and the construction period is estimated at 12
months.”
“Placencia villagers have always had a clear vision of what they want the
dock area to look like,” observed Leslie.

“They envision a dock area that facilitates visitors and villagers alike with
public restrooms, a sensible pier and a tasteful and functional public dock.
They want a place where people can sit, relax, and look across the water… a
place with a meditative quality…a place that invites.”
By Barnacle Bill
palm leaves work well.
Last month I mentioned feeding
bats here at dusk on into dark. It
can be mesmerizing, like watching
a campfire.
Also consider where you will be.
Make sure it is a comfortable spot,
hence the beers!
In a 2009 public meeting, the Sustainable Tourism Program, BTB, the
Ministry of Tourism, Civil Aviation and Culture and the Placencia Village
Council “listened and heard the people of Placencia.”
Just before dusk, in late
afternoon, is when I have the best
luck watching hummingbirds.
They seem to want to ‘tank up’
just before calling it a day, so
they hit my feeders a lot during
this time.
Photographing hummers can be a
challenge. But with patience and
some luck (and in my case, a few
beers) you can get some great
results.
Here are some tips I have learned.
Make the bird come to you. If you
try to chase them all over you will
go nuts. Set your feeder or flower
where you can get a good shot. If
using a feeder, block off all the
holes except the one you want them
to come to, forcing them to only
one hole or flower.
Consider the background when
placing the feeder. I find the green
Once you know where the bird will
be, pre-focus on that spot.
Their pattern is sip, backup,
hover, repeat. Learn this and you
can get good shot of the bird
without his beak in the feeder.
My pattern is sip, sit and wait,
fire off a dozen when a bird
arrives, repeat.
To truly freeze their wings you will
need a flash. The methods can
range from simple to not so much.
For my photos I am using two
speedlites; everything is in manual,
focus, exposure, and the lights.
I can really get into this so I won’t
do it here, but, feel free to contact
me if you want to hear more. I am
glad to help and easy to find.
I find this to be a very rewarding
way to spend a couple hours in the
afternoon enjoying a few beers on
my deck. I hope you will too.
Happy hunting!

Placencia student wins United World College Scholarship
Alexis Caballero Jr has been
awarded the 2011 United World
College scholarship, beating out
approximately 30 other students
throughout Belize who applied.
The United World College concept
was conceived in the 1950s at the
height of the Cold War. It was a
bold plan, the realization of German
educationalist Kurt Hahn. Hahn
believed that much could be done to
overcome religious, cultural and
racial misunderstanding and avoid
conflict if young people from all
over the world could be brought
together. It was felt that students
aged 16 to 18 would be grounded in
their own cultures but still
impressionable enough to learn
from each other.
The first UWC – UWC of the
Atlantic – opened in 1962 and
today there are thirteen UWC
schools and colleges across five
continents. Almost 40,000 students
from over 180 countries have
studied at UWC schools and
colleges and there are over 130
national committees. In the
turbulent world of the 21st century,
UWC’s aims and objectives are as
relevant today as they were in 1962
– perhaps even more so.

Grill ‘n’ Go popular for its
“Fried Chicken Fridays”
Dawn Berry-Pollard, proprietor and chef at Grill ‘n’ Go clearly remembers
her first success in the kitchen. She was 14 and caring for an ill neighbor
when she was asked to prepare a meal for visitors. Never the type to refuse a
challenge, she made the best “beef roast” the family had ever tasted. No
cookbook – just intuition, a natural knack for taste and recollections of her
mother’s home cooking.
Like her mother, the late Julia Pate-Berry, who opened The Galley
Restaurant in Placencia in the early 1980s, Dawn is gifted with a keen
business sense and an unwavering drive to please taste buds. Nineteen and
married, she prepared burgers at home for her husband to sell to his coworkers during their lunch break. He never returned home with a single
burger.
In 1987, she opened Home Fry, a successful fast-food restaurant in Belize
Cit,y popular for its golden fried chicken and forever etched in the memory
of patrons. As gangs began to form in the area, the family moved to the
suburbs, but Dawn wouldn’t stop. She sold frozen pizzas in the major
supermarkets, catered healthy foods to the public hospital and prepared fresh
fruit juices for local high schools.
Dawn Berry-Pollard, owner of Grill ‘n’ Go continues a
successful family tradition of providing great food made
with fresh local ingredients.

Sixty-one pets
treated in April
The April clinic was a little busier
than the previous couple of monthly
clinics. There was a total of 61
animals seen by Dr. Bennett to
include 7 spays (2 cats and 5 dogs)
and 4 neuters (2 cats and 2 dogs)
All 4 cat surgeries were feral cats.
The PHS volunteers who assisted
with the Feral Cat Program were
Deb Coston, Ted Berry, Warren &
Lisa Jordan.
Dr. Bennett also gave these
vaccinations:
5 cat - 4in1’s
33 dog – 6in1’s
3 rabies vaccinations to
both cats & dogs.
Thank you to the PHS volunteers
who helped with this clinic: Pat
Sylvester, Jeanne Marechal, John
VanDeurzen, Juana Itch, Madalon
Richardson, Angie Markham, Mary
Ann Kaye, Penny Dial, Mary
Smith, and Jr. Volunteers: Serena
Kafka & Tessa Eiley.
We want to welcome new PHS
members: Aaron Stephens, Tracy
Barnes, Bob & Sharon Flindell, and
Melina Carcamo. And thank you
for continuing support from this
month’s renewing members: Penny
Dial, Linda & Charlie Burrow,
Mary Smith, and Linda Bisbee.
Now to last month’s question:
Question of the
month:
Is a warm, dry nose
the sign of a sick
dog?
(Look for answer in next
month's clinic article.)
It was invented back in 1872 and
it is a danger to dogs. What is it?
Answer: It is the toothpick. Some
pets like used toothpicks because
well…they often are coated with or
smell like remnants of food. Some
pets will play with them and others
eat them. Depending on the size of
the pet’s mouth, some toothpicks
can get caught and even poke a
whole in the gums or mouth.
One dog was reported pawing at his
mouth in a lot of pain - the owner
could not even restrain him for an
examination. When looked at, it
was found that a toothpick had
gotten wedged in the roof of the
mouth. It dug in to his gums and
they were bleeding.
After
restraining the pet, the toothpick
was taken out - everything was fine.
So - if you are a toothpick user please toss them in the trash where
your dog can't get them.

Kerry and Linn’s Goss Chocolate
featured at Toledo’s Cacao-fest
Linn Wilson and Kerry Goss founded Goss Chocolate in Placencia
Peninsula’s community of Maya Beach in 2007—he same year the
Cacao-Fest started. Linn and Kerry attended the Festival, and were
hooked! “Wine and chocolate under the stars, along with live music. If
not paradise, then close enough,” says Kerry.
Besides making chocolate Kerry and Linn own the Blue Crab Resort
and earn high marks from tourists for leaving chocolates on the pillows.
Their chocolate factory is just across the road from The Blue Crab. You
will find Goss Chocolate in the refrigerator section of your local grocer.
If you are looking for a whole weekend of chocolate, then think about
heading south to Punta Gorda Town for a whole weekend of chocolate!
On Friday 20th May Cacaofest kicks off its landmark event, with music
from the fabulous Nelita Castillo, and decadent chocolate creations from
Belize's foremost chocolatiers - Kakaw, Goss, and Cotton Tree. There'll
be sumptuous food and Premium Wines, all at our great new seafront setting
at Coral House Inn in Punta Gorda Town. Closing firework display!
Saturday's Daytime activities in Punta Gorda Town include live music
throughout town, a Chocolate Centre at PG's Chocolate Factory, tortilla
making at the Fajina House, and art and archaeology exhibits. Savor Belize
will be announcing the winner of the Best Chocolate recipe competition,
learn about Cacao and Conservation from Toledo's leading NGOs, and learn
about cacao production and processing at the Toledo Cacao Growers'
Association open day.
Children will enjoy the free Cacao for Kids activities, leaving you free to
visit the different activities in Town, knowing that they are safe, supervised,
and having fun.
Special Festival tours are offered for those wanting to experience the delights
of the District, with Cacao Trail tours, and Sea Toledo snorkelling trips to
our beautiful offshore cayes.

Belize may well be the cradle of chocolate, and many people
believe cacao was first used in this area. The Maya kings were
the first to tax chocolate, but not the last. Only 1-3% of
chocolate beans grown worldwide are flavour beans, those
most valued by chocolate makers. Here in Belize, the vast majority of beans are flavour beans, and this helps make Goss
Chocolate some of the best in the world!

“If I can do it, you can do it, too.”
Lola Delgado inspires tourist to follow her dream
By Carla MacDiarmid
(ANACORTES, WA USA)
How did Carla's Funky Art start?
From the inspiration of LOLA
DELGADO! Almost two years
ago, Dan and I went on a two week
vacation to Belize. We fell in love
with the people, the culture, and the
country. That trip was a lifechanging event for me.
A
backpack, some cash, and a pair of
shorts changed my whole life. I
will never be the same person
again!
I have created art my entire life.
As a child you would find me in
my room coloring, drawing,
pasting stuff together, and
painting. I dreamed of going to
art school after graduating high
school. Life had other plans for me
at the time. Along came a baby
boy, a marriage, a baby girl, and
before I knew it I owned a home. I
had visions of being something
more than my dental assisting job
allowed, but hey, it paid the bills!
I spent many years of my life
working in people's mouths, and I
was so tired of it! I had been going
through a lot in my life when I took
that vacation to Belize. I had been
doing some soul searching and
trying to find myself again.
On the last day of our wonderful
vacation, I had read in the Belize
Lonely Planet that Seine Bight was
the place to go for wonderful
Belizean art. I told Dan that we just
had to go!
We
grabbed
bikes from the
Maya Beach
Resort
and
rode a few
miles south to
check it out. It
was
terribly
hot and humid
that day, and I
am not much
of a bike rider.
After a few
gallons
of
water,
we
persevered and
made it!
was sitting right there painting in
her studio. She told us her life
story. She started out with nothing,
began creating cards for her friends,
and everything took off from there!
She now owns a home, beautiful
gardens, and her own art gallery!
Dan mentioned to
her that I was an
artist. The whole
time we shopped
she kept telling me
to "just do it, just
start painting, if I
can do it, you can
too!"
She was
also very happy to
hear that Dan was
supporting my art!
When we arrived
home to the States,
Dan kept at me!
He kept telling
me
"look
at
What a sight to
Lola...she is right,
see!!!!! When
you need to just
we walked into
DO IT!" So now,

A Carla MacDiarmid original
Gallery, I was
today....painting,
in HEAVEN! There were tons of
painting, painting! Selling art,
beautiful bright paintings on her
being happy, and making people
walls. Each and everyone made me
smile! Thank you LOLA!
Thanks for making me DO IT! I
smile and feel good! I thought to
hope to go back to Seine Bight
myself "this is what art is all
soon....and maybe one day Lola and
about!" Lola was wonderful! She
I can paint together over a Belikin
or two!
I interviewed Lola via email the
other day, and here are some
interesting things to know!
Lola was born in 1959 in Belize
City, and has been creating art her
entire life. She is a busy mom of
two, and a grandmother of four!
She was the first person to open an
art gallery on the Placentia
Peninsula. (She has a large sign
posted in the village of Seine
Bight) She has been painting and
writing full-time since 1992, and
her favorite medium is acrylic. Her
favorite artists are Friday Kahlo,
M.C. Escher, and Dali. She finds
inspiration from the wonderful
people around her, the sea, and her
garden. (you should check out her
garden blog) She loves to go to bed
reading Stephen King books, but is
afraid to watch scary movies by
herself! (that makes two of us!)
Check out her website or you can
contact her on her Lola's Art
Gallery Facebook Page!
I encourage you to go and check out
Lola's Art.
You will not be
disappointed! Thanks again Lola
for inspiring me and telling me to
"JUST DO IT!" You have changed
my life!

Open 7AM-9PM
De Lite Café’s eclectic
menu sculpted from fresh
organic local produce
De Lite Cafe at Spectarte Gallery
Maya Beach where food is art.
My first visit to Spectarte Gallery
was in 2006 at a very splendid
cocktail party for its inception.
Since then we have watched the
innovative changes and with the
advent of the paved road we are
thrilled to visit the area more often.
The sign at the end of Embarcadero
Road now announces Art and
Garden Gallery, Massage Studio
and Salon and De Lite Cafe.
The array of Belizean art is always
intriguing but it is now the cafe that
has us returning for its wonderful
fare and tropical ambience. The
eclectic menu is sculpted from fresh
organic local produce artistically
presented.
Doors open at 7 am with the aroma
of freshly brewed coffee and bakery
items. Everything is created on the
premises: granola, yogurt, ice
cream, buns, cookies and pies, juicy
roast beef and exquisite sushi.
There are several places to choose a
seat in the burnt orange dining
room decorated with Belizean
antiques telling the story of food.
Cassava graters, mashers, grinders,
tools and gadgets with fascinating
names and uses. The paintings also
depict
primitive
cooking
techniques. It is a pleasingly
educational experience.
The popular spot is the waterfall
garden and here one can learn about
native plants. Easter brought
something new as breakfast and
lunch gave way to dinner and the
cafe is now open from 7AM to 9
PM, and is closed Wednesdays.
As yet, I have not been for dinner
but the menu looks luscious. I have
booked a massage for next week
followed by a dinner date with
friends.
Truly
a
delightful
experience.

You will fall in love with our barefoot perfect paradise
Seven perfect days in Placencia...because it can’t be done in three!
So you’ve arrived in Placencia
and checked in to your hotel.
You’ve found a beach chair,
wiggled your toes into the sand
and found a local beverage to cool
your jets. You brought a few
novels you’ve been saving for that
uninterrupted reading time. It
feels great to sit and do nothing.
It only takes a few minutes to
realize there is magic in this place
and you do not want to miss a
thing. If you are looking for the
seven day adventure of a lifetime
here are some activities that top
the list of things to see and do as a
guest in the Barefoot Perfect
world of Placencia, Belize.
Latin names. You will see boa
constrictors, iguanas, crocodiles,
river otters and even tiny bats lined
up in perfect vertical rows on the
tree trunks leaning out over the
river. Many of the guides grew up
on the river and know the secret
hidey holes of their favorite critter.
The magic part of the tour
concludes with a hike through the
jungle where you’ll find yourself
following the incredible song of
the howler monkeys in the jungle
canopy. All the tour guides are
based in Placencia. Stop by the
Tourism Office of the BTIA or see
the list below for a list of authorized
tour guides.
Day one: Take the Monkey River
Tour
Monkey River snakes 12 miles
through the coastal mangroves.
Your guide will keep his eyes
peeled for the elusive manatee who
feed along the shoreline. (Manatee
also enjoy the
solitude of
Placencia’s nearby lagoon.) The
small village of Monkey River
Town welcomes you at the mouth
of the Monkey River. After a brief
stop, your guide will gently motor
your boat upriver into the jungle.
He will point out the myriad species
of birds, impressing you with his
knowledge of their common and
Day two: Go fishing!
Placencia is one of the few
locations in the world where a
fisherperson can earn a Grand
Slam, that is, hold the rare
distinction of catching
three
species of fish in one day. The
coveted Grand Slam includes
reeling in a tarpon, permit and
bonefish by the same angler in the
same day. There are many flyfishing and saltwater-fishing tours
leaving from Placencia. Deep-sea
fishing trips for sailfish and marlin
are very popular and lion fish
tournaments is a newer event,
almost guaranteed to have you
reeling in fish faster than you can
count them. Fishing tours can be
arranged for day trips both inside
and outside the reef.
Tours
normally include lunch, fishing gear
and a guide.
Day three: A MUST! Snorkel or
SCUBA our pristine waters
The ultimate of all of the
underwater tours Placencia offers is
the opportunity to dive with he
whale sharks on dates surrounding
the full moon from March through
June.
These gentle giants eat
plankton not humans; however
when you see one under water you
could easily believe that Jonah was
swallowed by just such a creature
(and spit out so the story could be
told.) To date, no tourists have
traveled into a whale shark’s gut.
Placencia’s proximity to the Belize
Barrier Reef, the second-longest
reef in the world, gives divers and
snorkelers an endless supply of dive
destinations. Placencia's dive
operators run first class tours to
widely varied destinations. Some
specialize in certain areas, so do
your homework and you can enjoy
several dive locations. Laughing
Bird Caye National Park, Silk Caye,
Ranguana Caye and the inner cayes
are frequent snorkeling destinations
for either full or half day
excursions, while the popular
Gladden Spit is definitely a full day
dive destination. BTW, learn to
pronounce caye as “key” like the
locals do; they may be too polite to
correct you.
Day four: Get some rest on a
Sailing Tour
From peaceful sun set cocktail
cruises to full day sailing trips,
Placencia offers a full range of
Visit idyllic
opportunities.
uninhabited cayes, barbecue on the
beach and snorkel the shallow coral
formations that usually surround
them.
(More adventurous and
experienced sailors might want to
gather friends and schedule a week
long sail on a catamaran, but that’s
for your next trip.) Imagine being
rocked to sleep by gentle waves and
awakening to an brilliant orange
sunrise shimmering over the clear
blue sea.
Day five: Hike in the Cockscomb
Basin Wildlife Sanctuary This full
or half day tour takes you to the
Co cksco mb Basin Wild life
Sanctuary, an hour's drive from
Placencia in the Maya Mountains.
The wildlife sanctuary is home to a
jaguar preserve. It is rare to spot
these nocturnal animals but you
will see their sign (feces). The
wildlife sanctuary also features a

Earth Day clean up of Laughing Bird Caye
earns some water play time for helpful students
More than 100 enthusiastic students
from primary schools in Placencia
Village and Seine Bight as well as a
hand full of teachers, friends of
Splash Dive volunteers and event
organizers from Southern
Environmental Association (SEA)
flocked to Laughing Bird National
Park on May 7, 2011 for their
annual Earth Day Clean Up on the
'No Take Zone' Caye.
As pockets of vibrant
environmentally conscious
youngsters poured into the
protected 1.4 mile long island, they
were greeted by SEA Park Ranger
Derol Francisco who welcomed all
and oriented them with the rules
and regulations of the Caye and the
importance of the small role each
can play in conservation efforts for
big environmental impacts.
After the brief orientation, all
energized volunteers grabbed their
oversized garbage bags and got
busy picking every bit of garbage
either left on the island by visitors
or washed ashore from the open sea
for proper disposal on the mainland.
Students, teachers, organizers,
friends of Splash Dive Center were
all happy to be at the breath taking
protected site soaking in the sun,
the sand, the sea breeze and all the
heart-warming charms of the
coconut tree dotted island while
contributing constructively to the
environment.
Once all garbage was collected, all
Earth Day participants gathered
under the large palapa for cool
refreshments, fruits and a delicious
Certainly the day at the caye would
not be complete with a swim and a
splash in the pristine waters of
Laughing Bird Caye. Upon
culminating the educational lecture
by fellow peers, all children
stampeded into the sea for a welldeserve splatter and spatter, playing
human pyramids in the water.
Mr. Mendez, SEA Outreach
Coordinator of the Earth friendly
initiative, was pleased for another
successful event this year and
extended his organization's sincere
gratitude to Splash Dive Center for
their consistent support and
collaboration in making the cleanup
day a reality and a large success.

plate of rice & beans and stewed
chicken sponsored by the local
supermarkets and restaurants of
Placencia. After the happy meal, an
educational and interactive session
followed of presentations on the
fascinating history of Laughing
Bird Caye, the ecological
importance of the Sea Turtles,
Goliath Grouper (commonly called
Jew fish), and the positive and
negative impact of tourism on the
premier tourism destination.
Splash Dive Shop Juniors Club
leader (Marcos Supaul) concluded
the day's activity well with, "
Efforts like this provides a good
opportunity to educate the future of
our communities on the ecological
and economic importance of
maintaining and protecting our
natural and cultural heritage by
experiencing for themselves the
charm of such natural treasures.
Efforts like these helps to create
greater awareness and appreciation
of what is ours so that together we
become better stewards of nature's
gifts.
Splash Dive Center and SEA
wishes to thank all those who
contributed generously to the day's
success and welcome others to join
their effort in expanding this
healthy reefs campaign to other
areas such as the Gladden Split."

Dr. Rachel Graham
Scientist wins
prestigious award
for saving sharks
A scientist who has saved whale
sharks in Belize from extinction has
been honored by the Princess Royal
as the third woman in a row to win
the prestigious Whitley Gold
Award for conservation.
Dr Rachel Graham was awarded the
prize by Her Royal Highness
Princess Anne at the Royal
Geographic Society in central
London.
The £60,000 award, supported by
Sir David Attenborough and the
World Wildlife Fund (WWF), will
go towards further conservation
work to try and save sharks and
rays from overfishing off the coast
of Belize.
Dr Graham has dedicated 20 years
of her life to saving endangered
species like the whale shark, a
"gentle giant" measuring up to 40ft
long that feeds mostly on plankton.
The 43-year-old Director of the
Wildlife Conservation Society’s
Gulf and Caribbean Sharks and
Rays Programme, has won legal
protection for the species in
Belizean waters.
She also led innovative schemes to
encourage people to protect rather
than fear sharks by letting
schoolchildren, students, planners
and decision-makers see the gentle
animals in the wild.

Find wonder veggie locally: removes ink, defogs a mirror,
cures a headache, shines a faucet and freshens breath!
One vegetable that’s always available from our
local vegetable vendors is cucumber. Who knew
they had so many magical properties? There are
thirteen reasons to stock up now, even if you do
never plan to eat any.
1. Cucumbers contain most of the vitamins you
need every day. Just one cucumber contains
Vitamin B1, Vitamin B2, Vitamin B3, Vitamin
B5, Vitamin B6, Folic Acid, Vitamin C, Calcium,
Iron, Magnesium, Phosphorus, Potassium and
Zinc.
2. Feeling tired in the afternoon? Put down the
caffeinated soda and pick up a cucumber.
Cucumbers are a good source of B Vitamins and
carbohydrates that can provide that quick pick-me
-up that can last for hours.
3. Tired of your bathroom mirror fogging up after
a shower?
Try rubbing a cucumber slice along the mirror, it
will eliminate the fog and provide a soothing, spa
-like fragrance.
4. Are grubs and slugs ruining your planting
beds? Place a few slices in a
small pie tin and your garden will be free of pests
all season long. The chemicals in the cucumber
react with the aluminum to give off a scent
undetectable to humans but drive garden pests
crazy and make them flee the area.
5 Looking for a fast and easy way to remove
cellulite before going out or to the pool?
Try rubbing a slice or two of cucumbers along
your problem area for a few minutes, the
phytochemicals in the cucumber cause the
collagen in your skin to tighten, firming up the
outer layer and reducing the visibility of
cellulite. Works great on wrinkles too!!!
6. Want to avoid a hangover or terrible
headache?
Eat a few cucumber slices before going to bed
and wake up refreshed and headache free.
Cucumbers contain enough sugar, B vitamins
and electrolytes to replenish essential nutrients
the body lost, keeping everything in
equilibrium, avoiding both a hangover and
headache!!
7. Looking to fight off that afternoon or
evening snacking binge?
Cucumbers have been used for centuries and
often used by European trappers, traders and
explores for quick meals to thwart off
starvation.
8. Have an important meeting or job interview
and you realize that you don't have enough time
to polish your shoes?
Rub a freshly cut cucumber over the shoe. Its
chemicals will provide a quick and durable
shine that not only looks great but also repels
water.
9. Out of WD 40 and need to fix a squeaky
hinge?
Take a cucumber slice and rub it along the
problematic hinge and voila, the squeak is gone!
10. Stressed out and don't have time for massage,
facial or visit to the spa?
Cut up an entire cucumber and place it in a
boiling pot of water, the chemicals and nutrients
from the cucumber with react with the boiling
water and be released in the steam, creating a
soothing, relaxing aroma that has been shown the
reduce stress in new mothers and college students
during final exams.
11. Just finish a business lunch and realize you
don't have gum or mints?
Take a slice of cucumber and press it to the roof
of your mouth with your tongue for 30 seconds to
eliminate bad breath. The phytochemcials will
kill the bacteria in your mouth responsible for
causing bad breath.
12. Looking for a 'green' way to clean your
faucets, sinks or stainless steel?
Take a slice of cucumber and rub it on the surface
you want to clean, not only will it remove years
of tarnish and bring back the shine, but is won't
leave streaks and won't harm your fingers or
fingernails while you clean.
13. Using a pen and made a mistake? Take the
outside of the cucumber and slowly use it to erase
the pen writing, also works great on crayons and
markers that the kids have used to decorate the
walls!!

Wastewater collection,
treatment and disposal
system for Placencia
Peninsula gets go-ahead
After years of contemplating growth
and waste/sewage management on the
Placencia Peninsula, the communities
of Placencia, Belize requested
assistance from EWB – Engineers
Without Borders - to help us solve our
wastewater system problem.
EWB heard us and reviewed and approved our
project; thus, in June 2006 the Engineers Without
Borders, Sacramento Valley Professional
Chapter, came to Belize and evaluated the
problem and gathered data to prepare the
Wastewater System Feasibility Study for the
Placencia Peninsula.
In their report the EWB noted our pristine white
sandy beaches and close proximity to the world's
second biggest Barrier Reef which makes
Placencia Peninsula a major tourist hub. Three
major communities, Placencia Village, Seine
Bight, and Maya Beach make up the rapidly
growing Placencia Peninsula With the increasing
density comes increasing waste generation.
“April 2011 will be
remembered as an
historical benchmark for
the Placencia Peninsula,”
—Charles Leslie,
Placencia Village Chairman
A uniform wastewater system does not exist on
the peninsula and there is growing concern for the
health and safety of the people as well as the
surrounding ecosystems. Existing wastewater
treatment and disposal systems range from
package treatment plants mostly used by resorts
to dumping buckets waste in the sea and lagoon
at Seine Bight.
On October 12, 2010 the Department of
Environment and Belize Water Services
conducted a Public Consultation, where the
details and intricacies of the construction and
operation of a wastewater collection, treatment,
and disposal system for the Placencia Peninsula
were discussed.
On April 21, 2011, it was announced that The
Government of Belize (GOB) and the InterAmerican Development Bank (IDB) signed a
Loan Contract in the amount of US five million
($5,000,000 USD) for the financing of the
project.
The occasion was also used for signing a
Technical Cooperation (TC) Agreement between
the IDB and the Belize Water and Services, Ltd.
(BWSL) in the sum of US$500,000 for the
Detailed Design of a Wastewater Collection and
Treatment System in Placencia.
This non-reimbursable TC will support the loan
agreement for the integrated waste water program
in Placencia.
It is possible that the project may be start in the
latter part of 2011.

be fascinated by leaf cutter ants marching across
your path. Look up to find a brilliant green
iguana hiding in the foliage. Birders will add
many sightings of seldom seen birds to their lists.
Some tour guides take their heartier guests up the
mountain to waterfalls and streams. The most
refreshing part of the tour is a plunge into the
pool at the base of a waterfall, so come prepared
to peel down to your bathing suit for the ultimate
jungle experience. You, too, can have an Pirates
of the Caribbean adventure, albeit a much calmer
one.
Day six: Delve into our history on a Mayan
Ruins Tour
For a look back in time, take a tour to ancient
Mayan sites. The ruins of Nim Li Punit and
Lubaantun are around two hours away from
Placencia. Some tours go by boat across the
lagoon and minibus along the Southern Highway.
Others traverse the newly paved road the whole
way. As you approach each site you’ll get a peek
at the life of the modern Maya who live in
neighboring villages and bring their wares for
you to buy. Each site contains a visitors’ center
with attractively arranged artifacts and
informative displays. These sites were once citystates of the Mayan empire. You’ll be impressed
with the precision with which the Mayans
constructed their buildings and monuments. Your
well informed guide will regale you with stories
from Mayan times and inform you of the history
surrounding the ruins. If you request it ahead of
time, you can add a stop at Blue Creek Cave with
its hidden waterfall.
Day
seven:
Walk
Placencia’s
famous
sidewalk. In the Guinness Book of World
Records, Placencia boasts the world’s narrowest
Main Street. Start at the end of the village (turn
left at the pier) and follow the sidewalk for about
a mile. The sidewalk used to be 1x4’s laid end to
end for the length of the village. They served to
facilitate the wheelbarrow tires allowing villagers
to more readily haul items along the sandy beach.
Today the sidewalk is mostly cement, still quite
narrow. In some places you will notice the
foundation of conch shells. Take the side paths
from the street or to the beach or those that lead
toward the road and discover an incredible
combination of restaurants and shops and
sidewalk vendors selling their wares. Notice the
incredible art work, wood carvings and Mayan
handicrafts. You’ll find gourmet coffee and
smoothies, sit down restaurants fast food places
that serve the lunch enjoyed by many locals: stew
chicken, rice and beans. One thing you’ll
discover is that you’ll be served food prepared
from fresh ingredients nearly every place you go.
Explore one of the many paths leading back to he
road and complete your circle back to the pier.
Explore one of the many paths leading back to he

Be sure to swing into one of the many local
grocers (Wallen’s is the oldest) and find local
specialties like homemade baked goods and home
-canned salsa in mason jars. The local gourmet
chocolate in gold foil wrappers and homemade
yogurt is in the refrigerators.
When you are enjoying dinner at that restaurant
you found on your walk through our idyllic
village be sure to get out our calendar and circle
