Railroad
Heritage
The community of
Proctor was created
in 1892 when the
Duluth, Missabe
and Northern Railroad was extended into Duluth.
The city was originally named Proctor Knott,
for a friend of the founder, Beriah Magoffin. The
flat plateau of Proctor proved to be a convenient
site for the railroad’s engine shops and storage
yards. The Proctor railroad yard was once the
largest ore sorting railroad yard in the world. For
more information and to see artifacts of Proctor,
visit the Proctor Historical Society in the building
near the train, which was the former office of the
car shop superintendent.
Proctor is conveniently located at Exit 249 off I-35. Only
2+ hours from the Twin Cities and minutes from Duluth.
