The Latter-day Saints store family history data for religious reasons.
It was intended to help track the performance of temple ordinances for the
deceased.
They started some time ago (1969) but needed a way for their members to
do Family History research.
Thus the IGI (International Genealogical Index) was created.

What information is on the IGI?

Sex, status
• M = Male
• F = Female
• H = Husband
• W = Wife
Type of event
• A = Adult Christening
• B = Birth
• C = Christening
• D = Death or Burial (Not many)
• F = Birth or Christening of First known child
• M = Marriage
• N = Census
• W = Will
Date of the event
Town and / or parish
B, E & S - Not used by us
Source
• Batch Number
• Serial Sheet Number
• Both are required if you are to order copies of the original
COO, MOO & POO



The information with batch numbers that start with a C, M or P (Christenings,
Marriages and Parish) is regarded as safe to use.
Although they are infrequently seen
o E – Mixed Marriages and Baptisms
o J – Males only
o K – Females only
should also be OK as well
All others should be treated as questionable.
Where can you see the IGI on Fiche?

The Research centre at Astley Hall Farmhouse
Family Search now replaces the IGI and incorporates
several other databases and newly added data.



However, if you still require just the IGI it still can be found at https://familysearch.org/search/collection/igi

Example of a search


Jacob Tweedale, born Bury between 1846 and 1850
Type set to Births, Baptisms and Christenings

Add Parents Names, and remove Type we find the census entries but if we
scrole to the bottom
New Search for a marriage of Jacob Tweedale to an
Elizabeth at Prestwich
Another Search for William Tweedale born to Jacob
Tweedale and Betty Dobson about 1790
Sellect the batch number, fill in the details to find other
children as below.
Are these all the children? The Batch number refers to a
batch of documents that were scanned by the LDS and a
batch might cover a restricted number of years.

There are billions of records that have been indexed and many more that
haven’t
As an example we will search for the records of John MEDD



It is possible to search the records by your ancestors name
Or
By the record type and location

Let’s look for John’s brother and sisters


What else can we find?
Here I have searched for John MEDD born New Malton Married between 1830
and 1845 to Mary

John can be found on the 1871 censuses

Not the correct John MEDD but it shows what you can find
IGI Batch Numbers
• The IGI on Family Search has a sister Website called ‘IGI Batch Numbers’
• The address is

• Much easier to type ‘IGI Batch Numbers’ into Google
• Each batch number relates to an individual parish register.
• (A Parish may have more that 1 register.)
• What the site does is, list all the batch numbers that relate to an individual
Church and Parish.
• They all start with ‘C’ or ‘P’ for Christenings or ‘M’ for Marriage or ‘E’ for
mixed Christenings and Marriages
