Actually it was a group that numbered seventeen of (soon to be
famous) Y8/Y7 pupils who accompanied Mr Barnett and me to
Dorset, the site of many of Enid Blyton’s adventures.
The purpose of our expedition was to ensure we started the
rugby season on the front foot – this being achieved by sharing an
excellent training session with Swanage and Wareham Rugby
Club on Sunday morning. Tours, no matter how brief, always
provide an opportunity to ‘team build’ and our jaunt to The
Purbecks was preceded by a game of Zorb Football. For those of
you who have not witnessed such a spectacle, the word ‘carnage’
does not do it justice.
As always the boys behaved impeccably. Other residents at our hotel barely knew we were there – perhaps in no
small way due to the Nicholas Oldroyd Card School.
The standard of rugby was high – no quarter asked or given – but, we returned up the M3 having made many new
friends and many fond memories.

Nature Collection Day from Mrs Hogan
On Thursday, the boys in the Junior school and Year 5
were treated to a fascinating day of workshops from the
Nature Collection (http://www.thenaturecollection.co.uk/)
of Susanna Ramsey. The boys were given the opportunity
to handle a vast array of objects mainly collected in Richmond Park which included insects, animal skeletons, feathers, fur, snake skins and antlers from both kinds of deer
found in the park. Each year group enjoyed a slide show
and informative talk about local wildlife, focussing on an
area of their Science curriculum. The boys were full of
thoughtful questions. They were then allowed to explore
and touch the items on display. Year 5 also dissected some
owl pellets to discover what our local owls have been
snacking on! The day was a huge success and everyone
went away having learned something new, including the
teachers.
from Miss Bromfield
A huge thank you to all of those who came head to toe
in red on Wednesday and donated money for our
“Dress in Red for the Red Cross” day! Boys went above
and beyond donning their red attire and we raised
£177.90: thank you! We were also treated to a very
interesting and informative talk from Sally Pilkington
who came in from the Red Cross to wow us with some
astonishing facts about how big the Red Cross across
the world and the vast range of roles they have, with
their motto of “Refusing to ignore people in crisis”. If
you want to find out more about one of their many
roles, go to
http://www.redcross.org.uk/What-we-do/Preparingfor-disasters/Resilience for a fun, interactive video.

Year 6 Trip to the Magistrates Court
On the 14th January Year 6 attended the
Magistrates Court in Lavender Hill.
Here they were taught about the work of
the court, the layout and what
Magistrates do every day.
They were surprised to hear how young
the age of criminality is – it certainly gave
them cause to pause.
The day finished with a Dennis the
Menace trial; the outcome being that Mr
Wolf was set down to the cells.
Future Careers
A reminder that we would welcome any visits from parents
wishing to tell us about their ‘day jobs’. Research has shown that
career inspirations can be taken on at a very early age! I wonder
how many future astronauts have been inspired by watching Tim
Peake’s spacewalk today?
MINIBUS FOR THE REMAINDER OF THIS
ACADEMIC YEAR from Mrs Markwell

This has now been set up and is now bookable via School
Interviews, www.schoolinterviews.co.uk with the event code
