The 2007 Central States Corriente Association 14th Annual
Show and Roping
The CSCA opened its annual show in Hutchinson, Kansas, with
check-in on Wednesday, May 23, 2007; a warm, humid day that
turned into rain and hail downpours that flooded many streets
and whole parts of the city. Tornado warnings were out for
Hutchinson and many surrounding areas. The crew stayed extra
late for those stranded and finding their way to the fairgrounds
through alternative routes. All ended well and neither hail nor
flood nor tornadoes would keep the CSCA show from going on.
Not even a reduction from 455 entries in 2006 to 302 in 2007
could keep us down.
Jeff Lane Passes ................................................................30
On Thursday we began the conformation classes with judging by
Tommy Jordan, Alabama, for females and Calvin Schwartz,
Nebraska, for males. The storms had blown all the Midwest
humidity away and the day was beautiful. Help from the Pratt
Community College Rodeo team kept all the animals moving
smoothly back and forth from pens to the arenas for judging.
Judging was followed by the annual reception and Cow Paddy
Bingo to support the CSCA scholarship fund. Great support
brought in $1050 for the scholarships for next year. It was also
announced that Katrina Van Diest and Shiyrah Ramsey were
awarded 2007 scholarships for $500 each. Judy Kuhlman
Peterson won the wagering contest portion, picking the spot for
the cow paddy from Jerry Taylor’s prize-winning cow.

A big ‘thank you’ goes out to everyone who attended and helped
with our show this year. A special thanks to Mary Van Diest,
Show Secretary; Kermit Keplar, Barn Manager; Sharon
Williams, Secretary-Treasurer; Brian Van Diest, Roping
Chairman; Rettalou Massey, Hotel & Banquet Chairman; and
Dennis Peterson for all their extra hard work this year. All of
CSCA stepped up to the plate and we are proud of you.
Friday was performance competition. Brad Lund, an AQHA
Professional Horseman, gave an educational program to begin
the day. He discussed and demonstrated how he trains new cattle for roping. Then he and his team of ropers gave an outstanding day of roping for all to view and the judges to use for evaluating the animals. The Pratt Community College Rodeo team
provided bulldoggers. On Friday evening the group gathered at
the water park at the Grand Prairie Hotel for a wonderfully wet
time. From the spas to the two water slides, everyone enjoyed
the wrap-up to a long day of events.

Departments
On Saturday three roping events were held. We had a members,
youth and women, and breeders roping. We were all glad to
have Katrina Van Diest back with us from an overnight stay in
the hospital in Wichita after a fall with her horses. We also had
a wonderful time with the youth roping event. We had a group
of 8 and under and a group of 8 to 12. Both had to head and heel
the dummy animal. All entrants received a gold coin from a
benefactor and ropes from Classic Rope Company. A buckle
was awarded to the top Header and Heeler in the 8-12 age group.
The buckles were presented at the awards dinner.

President’s Report
NACA
PRESIDENT
This message comes to you immediately following the NACA
Board’s second Long Range Planning Retreat which was held at
Wau-Ban-See Ranch on November 29 – December 1, 2007. The
retreat involved participation by Board of Advisors members
Ginny Cates and Mel Gnatkowski and an opening session with
the Presidents of the Plains Area Corriente Ass’n, Pacific
Northwest Corriente Ass’n, Southwest Corriente Ass’n and the
Texas Corriente Cattle Ass’n (unfortunately, other Board of
Advisors members and the other two Regional Presidents were
unable to be in attendance). I am hopeful that the deliberations
held this past week will lead to some identifiable improvements
in a variety of areas that will be of direct benefit to the individual
NACA member.
Those members that attended the educational program at the
2007 NACA Annual Meeting in Glen Rose, Texas will recall that
the USTRC representatives encouraged U.S. origin Corriente
breeders to have a demonstration for proving that these cattle
have the same or better roping performance capability than cattle
currently used in USTRC ropings. This past Friday, former
NACA President Jeff Poole and Jean Poythress, representing a
newly formed entity, American Roping Cattle, LLC, gave the
retreat attendees an insight of a steer consignment contract that is
to serve as the basic legal document for their effort to meet this
opportunity. In essence, 300 fresh steers meeting a set of other
criteria, will be needed in mid-January, 2008 for preparation to
be performance tested (at least one truck load) in five ropings –
Katy, Texas (February 14-17, 2008), Athens, Texas (February 29
- March 2, 2008), San Antonio, Texas (April 17-20, 2008),
Stephenville, Texas (May 16-19, 2008) and San Angelo, Texas,
(June 5-8, 2008). NACA encourages members to give serious
consideration to lending cattle to be used in this important performance demonstration.
In this report I intend to only highlight several other matters that
are underway to assist members. For example, as mentioned in
my last President’s Report, the Board has been actively involved
in attempting to insure that Corriente member’s interests are
being taken into consideration in the ongoing discussions relating
to changes to regulatory requirements for TB testing of “rodeo
event cattle”. I am pleased to report that through the direct participation of Idaho breeder Ted Hoffman, DVM, at the U.S. Animal
Health Association’s (USAHA) Tuberculosis Committee meeting
held in late October 2007, a Resolution was adopted that does not
disadvantage U.S. origin Corriente cattle owners (see page 33 for
content of the adopted USAHA Resolution). The Board has also
approved the expenditure of travel and lodging funds that will be
necessary to continue to ensure that Dr. Hoffman can sustain the
necessary involvement with this USAHA Committee throughout
the upcoming USDA/ APHIS 2008 rulemaking addressing tuberculosis issues.

Another relatively
immediate action item is the upgrading of the NACA Web site.
Finalization of the details of the upgrade that is to be implemented will be a major topic at the NACA Board’s January 11-12,
2008, meeting that will be held in Kansas City. If you have suggestions relative to websites that you find informative, easy to
navigate, very accessible to those limited by dialup services, etc.,
please forward this information to NACA Staff. In addition, it
would be beneficial for the Board and NACA Staff to be
informed should you have significant website design experience.
In response to expressions of concern via a variety of our members, there will soon be very significant changes in the NACA’s
approach to education, advertising, marketing, etc. The Board’s
intent is to expand the advertising effort in such a manner that it
reaches a much broader audience. The details of this increased
and expanded effort about our education, advertising and marketing effort will also be a focal point for part of our upcoming
Kansas City Board Meeting.
I am also pleased to report that this past weekend’s Retreat has
resulted in both a contemplated change in the Mission Statement,
movement of several of our “goals” into the “policy” area, and
identification of a set of goals that will focus the devotion of our
limited resources toward the common challenge “NACA will be
recognized as the preferred source for Corriente Cattle by
2012.” Needless to say, this is an ambitious undertaking, but
without such a focus, our members will continue to face ever
greater challenges in their efforts to meet their individual objectives.
In conclusion, I call your attention to the fact that applications for
NACA Board candidates must be filed by January 20, 2008 (see
page 37 for details).
I appreciate the opportunity to serve as NACA’s President. I also
am very grateful for the many kind and supportive comments that
I’ve received from individual members at the various Regional
shows. I wish everyone a Merry Christmas and a Happy and
profitable New Year. I can be reached by e-mail:
[email protected]. Please call me at 512/479-9707, my
secretary is Barbara Weed; my cell is 512/633-9428.

Carol Justice Passes
By Sharon Bosley
Many members conducting business with the NACA office lately have commented on the absence of their usual point of contact, Carol Justice. Carol was diagnosed with cancer in July and
had to undergo chemo-therapy. We regret to report that she
passed away December 6.
Carol was a highly productive worker. She was NACA's registrar
for over seven years, starting in mid-2000. She issued over
40,000 Corriente registration certificates during that time, more
than any previous registrar for NACA.
Carol had an easygoing, pleasant personality and a great sense of
humor. Carol’s maiden name was “Smart,” Justice was her married name. As she put it, “I used to be Smart...but then I got married.” Then there was the time I had to leave the office because
my cows got out. Carol covered my phone calls for me. If anyone asked when I would return, she told them, “When the cows
come home.”
Carol was preceded in death by her husband, Olen Justice, her
parents and all her siblings (two brothers and a sister). She leaves
two sons, Chris Justice of Denver, Colorado; and Charley Justice
of Raymore, Missouri. Also a daughter-in-law, Carrie, and two
grand-children, Connor and Alana, the family of Charley Justice.

Winter 2007 • The Corriente Corresponder
The 2007 Plains Area Corriente Association Annual Show and Roping
On September 27, 2007 the PACA kicked off its annual show.
With 105 head checked in and bedded down we all gathered for
the Welcome Wagon BBQ. Thanks to Curt Artery and Zane
Morris for the meat donation, and a great cook, we had a wonderfully prepared meal. The Calcutta on the roping classes was
auctioned off before starting the Breeder’s Roping, Roger
Schalla and Dave Slover took home the saddle honors. Roger
Schalla really knows how to start things off on the right foot,
attending their first PACA show, winning a breeders saddle and
then Grand Champion Bull on Friday.
Friday, September 28 turned out to be a beautiful day, especially
with 24 breeders present for cattle judging. Thanks to the team
effort of the PACA members and the Elks club, the show ran
very smooth and classes kept rolling. Brian Van Diest judged the
conformation and roping of bulls and steers along with the getof-sire class. Jay Matthews was the judge for conformation and
roping of heifers along with the youth judging class. Friday
afternoon we also held our Youth Dummy Roping, a big thank
you to Ster and Jodi Thrush for sponsoring and coordinating this
for the PACA. After the completion of the roping classes the
annual PACA membership meeting was held, with a good turn
out, electing new board members Ron Long and Brandon Volk
with re-election of Dennis Boote. After the meeting open roping
was held.
Saturday morning kicked off with Cowboy Church, put on by
Mark and Shelly Cain. God bless you! The women of the group
started the roping day, Erin Morris won the J’Lynn (Matthews)
Slover memorial saddle. Erin had been waiting for just the right
year to win this awesome award, and this year she ended up with
a nice baby blue ostrich seat saddle! Two membership draw-pots
were held throughout remainder of the day. Then Saturday
evening we all joined together to celebrate the winnings over the
past two days at the banquet, held at the Tower West Lodge.
Lots of awards were handed out and the fundraiser auction was
once again a hit. Man those caps and sweatshirts keep growing in
value, not to mention the $250 purse. This years award winningdonation heifer was donated by M & S Management, Mark and
Shelly Cain (she won the yearling heifer class). The winning bid
went to Dave and Tara Kalasinsky, Smith Canyon Ranch.
Sunday morning we all loaded up our cattle and headed back
home, for some it was going to be a long haul. None of us
could have done it ourselves, it took teamwork, and a lot of
effort from all attending. Thanks to everyone for coming and
making the 2007 PACA Regional Show another success.

2007 Eastern Corriente Association 3rd Annual Show
By Peggy Mathews
We began unloading cattle sometime around noon and were done
checking them in, tagging and bedding them down by 8:30 on
November 7. It seemed that the timing of the exhibitors could
not have been better. It was a great feeling to have Tommy
Jordan be one of the exhibitors that showed up to unload cattle,
in spite of his recent stay in the hospital.
The attendance at the show increased this year to 31 exhibitors,
with around 50 in attendance and quite a few little Corriente
enthusiasts. Once again we had new faces at our event and
always welcome more. There were 189 individual animals contributing to the 375 entries.
We woke up to a light frost in Meridian on the 8th for the start of
the show. The show began with conformation of the males being
judged by Marvin Knutson and the females being judged by
Craig Nichols. With the classes being pretty substantial in size,
they had a job on their hands. Friday began the performance portion of the show with Marvin and Craig both having a hand in the
judging for the day. Once again the classes were large and they
gave the ropers a run for their money.
The two days of judging seemed to come off without a hitch, due
to the assistance that the show manager, Gene Matthews and
show secretary, Peggy Matthews received from all of the mem-

bers. A special thanks goes out to Dr. David Newell for all of his
assistance in the setup of the facility that lent to the ease of moving the cattle and the workers that he gathered up to assist the
members.
Friday finished up with the Breeders Roping. First place was
awarded with a Breast Collar and went to Randy McGee and
Valley B Corrientes represented by Squirt Cook. Second place
went to LF Ranch represented by Wes Goodrich and Zane
Pritchard represented by Anthony Pritchard. Third place went to
Gracie Newell represented by Daniel Newell and Wau-Ban-See
Ranch represented by Zach Dobbins.
Saturday began with the members roping, a #10 Jackpot with 89
teams and a #12 Jackpot with 76 teams. Dana Hebert did a great
job of running the ropings for us. Noon found us in the middle
of the arena with the activity that usually brings out a lot of fun
and laughter – The Dummy Roping. The Under 5 winner was
Zane Pritchard. The 6 to 7 year old age group was won by Noah
Hebert and the 10 and over winner was Caleb Hebert.
Saturday concluded with the Awards Banquet. A confirmation
to the quality of the cattle entered into this years show is the fact
that over 90 percent of the exhibitors went home with ribbons.
Thanks to all the exhibitors for attending, we hope to see you
back next year.
A special thanks goes out to all of the sponsors of the classes and
those who generously donated to the silent auction.

CHARLIE DANIELS INVITED TO BECOME GRAND OLE OPRY MEMBER
Martina McBride Extends Surprise Invitation During Daniels’ Christmas For Kids Benefit Show
NASHVILLE, Tenn. - (November 19, 2007) – Legendary country superstar Charlie Daniels was surprised with an invitation to
become the newest member of the Grand Ole Opry this evening.
Daniels was hosting his annual Christmas For Kids benefit show
at the historic Ryman Auditorium when Opry member Martina
McBride delivered the surprise Opry invitation. After McBride
walked on stage with what appeared to be a Christmas gift for
Daniels, she opened the small box she was holding to reveal a
Christmas card reading:
“Peace, joy, love, and wishes fulfilled.
These are the timeless treasures of Christmas.
Thank you, Charlie, for all you’ve done to make Christmas wishes come
true for thousands of children through the years.
Now it’s time to make a wish come true for you, too.
You’re officially invited to become a member of the Grand Ole Opry.
Merry Christmas!”
Daniels backed away, overcome with emotion while the crowd
exploded with applause.
“I can not even begin to tell you folks…this is very emotional for
me,” said Daniels. “I never ever in my wildest dreams when I
came to Nashville with my precious wife and son dreamed that
this would happen. To think that now my name will be added
along with all these great country artists. Thank you.”
Following the Opry invitation, the Ryman’s stage curtains were
pulled to reveal the Opry’s classic barn backdrop, and an Opry
microphone stand was added center stage. Daniels performed the
rest of the benefit show in front of the famous backdrop. Daniels
will be officially inducted into the Opry during an Opry at the
Ryman performance later this winter.

“Charlie Daniels’songs and musicianship are nothing less than
legendary,” said Pete Fisher, Opry vice president and general
manager. “He’s known worldwide as one of country music’s true
icons, and all of us with the Opry are excited to welcome him
into our family of new stars, superstars and legends.”
Daniels has been a music icon for more than 40 years. Born in
Wilmington, N.C., he was raised on a musical diet that included
Pentecostal gospel, local bluegrass bands, rhythm & blues, and
country music from the radio, including Nashville’s 650 WSM.
During his career, Daniels has been awarded a Grammy, three
CMA awards, the ACM Pioneer Award, and the TNN/Music
City News Living Legend award for his musical contributions.
His signature song, “The Devil Went Down to Georgia,” topped
both country and pop charts, bringing him international acclaim.
The artist’s current Blue Hat/Koch Records CD release, Deuces,
is his first duet album and features guest artists Brad Paisley; The
Del McCoury Band; Gretchen Wilson; Earl, Gary & Randy
Scruggs; Bonnie Bramlett; Travis Tritt; Dolly Parton; Brooks &
Dunn; Marty Stuart; Darius Rucker; Brenda Lee; Vince Gill; and
Montgomery Gentry.
Charlie Daniels is an NACA Life Member and continues to raise
Corriente cattle at his Twin Pines ranch near Lebanon,
Tennessee. NACA past president Thurman Mullins manages the
ranch which also produces American Paint Horses.

Corrientes of the North
By Rhonda Sedgwick Stearns
Children learning American history are taught to sing, “In fourteen hundred and ninety-two, Columbus sailed the ocean blue.”
Team ropers should teach their kids to sing, “In fourteen hundred
and ninety-three – ropin’ stock came – the Corri-en-tee.”
Truly, that’s when the first hardy, adaptable Spanish cattle began
to graze the fresh grass of the New World! They were driven off
ships in the West Indes, Central and South America, and Florida,
where they immediately began adapting and conforming to their
new environs. They scattered, seeking greener pastures, eventually spreading across the southern U.S. and up the coast of
California.
Even after other European cattle were introduced on these continents, pockets of the original Spanish cattle survived, mostly
untainted. Across the America’s, these cattle are variously called
Criollo, Corriente or Chinampo – all terms loosely translated to
mean “cattle of the country” or “common cattle.”
The world is discovering the hardiness and other positive characteristics of these somewhat amazing and efficient cattle, spawning cattle associations or registries in Florida, the Southwestern
U.S., Spain and South America. The North American Corriente
Association (NACA) is one of these.
Members of the Board of Directors and Advisory Board of
NACA today represent a wide geographic area, including Texas,
22 The Corriente Corresponder • Winter 2007
Oregon, Missouri, Nevada, Wyoming, New Mexico, South
Dakota, Montana and the province of Alberta in Canada. NACA
members reside in more than 40 states, plus Canada, Mexico and
Australia, and it is “one of the fastest-growing breed associations
anywhere.”
Active Member #4779 of the NACA is C3 Corrientes, Cliff and
Rennee Standard, 301 Fallon County Road 604, Baker, MT
59313. They’ve transplanted happily on the Northern plains, having trekked there from the Roswell area of southeastern New
Mexico about five years ago.
Cliff was reared in the ranching business, and wanted to continue
that lifestyle. He came to realize that, no matter the economy,
people always seem to have plenty of money to spend on their
hobbies, so he figured roping cattle would enjoy a steady market.
That led him to the Corriente – small, trim cattle with sufficient
bone and strength for easy action and endurance.
It takes a lot of acres to run a cow where Cliff and Rennee came
from, so, like the early trail herds, they looked north in search of
more efficient range. While surfing the internet, they found a
place they liked near Beach, North Dakota.
“We leased it for a while,” Rennee recalls, “and Cliff worked for
Mitchell in the oilfield near Baker. Then he found out the Roger
Losing place was for sale there, and we bought it.”
“We started putting on a summer team roping series at the fairgrounds in Baker this year,” Rennee says. “We have six roping’s,
two each month, and it’s very popular. Our last two events will
be in September, with the Finals taking place the 16th. We’re
giving two trophy saddles, plus breast collars, buckles and other
nice prizes for the series winners.”
Cliff and Rennee get to ride and rope while breaking the new cattle in to the arena, then they mostly pull back and do the work
while everyone else enjoys the roping competition. They’re OK
with that, though, because it’s rewarding to use their cattle for the
purpose they were bred for.
The move from New Mexico to North Dakota and then Montana
could’ve created culture shock, but Rennee says the opposite is
true.
“People here are nice... everybody here has been nice. We’ve
moved around a lot, but now we both say ‘this is home.’” It’s
also home to a nice herd of some 200 colorful Corriente cattle.
Realizing cattle from New Mexico could have serious problems
acclimating to Montana’s harsh winters, the Standard family
decided to buy their seedstock in South Dakota, which has a similar climate. That has proven to be a
wise move, since the C3 herd is booming.
Calves start arriving on the C3 outfit in
March, and Rennee is proud that they
have no calving problems, even with the
first-calf heifers.
“The calves are sometimes not as coldweather hardy as some breeds, so we
just watch them closely when we have
severe weather,” she says.
Standard’s save about 20 nice replacement heifers annually, and have a nice
young bull they’ve raised. Their goal is
to develop their own herd, to their specific preferences.
Rennee is the computer tech, working the bugs out of the programs that take entries, do the drawing, and figure the payoffs for
the six summer events. It’s gone well this year and they plan to
continue it each summer, hoping for “a little larger crowd” annually.
Cliff is happy with the efficiency of his Corriente mother cows,
the way they’ve adapted to a more northern clime, the way they
reach maturity at only around 800 pounds, thus not requiring so
much feed; and the way they maintain good condition by eating
“about anything.” They’re survivors of the centuries, cattle that
have evolved to accept all kinds of hardships and prosper in spite
of them.
The NACA website is a
great place to advertise
their roping cattle, which
are sold as yearlings.
“That’s when their horns
are out to their ears,”
Rennee explains, “which
is where the ropers want
them.”
The NACA website is a great place to advertise their roping cattle, which are sold as yearlings. “That’s when their horns are out
to their ears,” Rennee explains, “which is where the ropers want

The temperament of the Corriente is
workable for the entire family – which
includes 15-year-old Kaylee; 5-year-old
Sydney; and the only boy, Jacob, who’s
one-and-a-half. It won’t be long ‘till
Jacob is ridin’ in the box and noddin’ for
cattle with his dad...but of course he’ll
first have to endure the traditional “riteof-passage” of every team ropers’ kid –
putting the cattle in the chute and opening the gate!
If you’re looking for good roping stock,
check out the C3 Corriente Cattle
Company at [email protected] or
(406) 778-2605. They have breeding
stock for sale as well as roping cattle. If
you’re in Baker on September 2nd or
16th, you can see them in action!

Local and area newspapers and word-of-mouth are other great
marketing tools. Living in the middle of a team-roping hotbed,
the Standard’s have no trouble selling most of their roping cattle
right in the local region.

The Corriente Corresponder • Winter 2006
UNITED STATES ANIMAL HEALTH ASSOCIATION - 2007
RESOLUTION NUMBER: 1
SOURCE: COMMITTEE ON TUBERCULOSIS
SUBJECT MATTER: TUBERCULOSIS TEST REQUIREMENT FOR RODEO/EVENT CATTLE
DATES: October 18-24, 2007
BACKGROUND INFORMATION:
The 2006 discovery of two separate instances of bovine tuberculosis, one case in a bucking bull and the other in a
roping steer, has resulted in traces to cattle in several states as well as the destruction of a herd of beef cattle.
The relative risk provided by rodeo/event cattle is much greater than the risk from feeder cattle. Compared to
feeder cattle, roping and bull dogging steers may remain in the population much longer, are more likely to be commingled with breeding beef cattle, may have multiple owners in a comparatively short time period and are frequently commingled with event/rodeo cattle of various owners at roping events and rodeos. In addition, current
events indicate that there is a need for more tuberculosis surveillance in bucking bulls. This is clearly demonstrated by the number of exposed cattle traces related to the positive bucking bull.
Most U.S. breeders of eventing cattle are cattle producers whose ranches are located in bovine TB Accredited
Free states. These cattle producers follow management practices identical to those of other purebred and commercial beef producers and their cattle seldom commingle with Mexican origin cattle or dairy cattle. It should be
recognized that these cattle pose a low risk of transmitting TB. Testing these cattle provides little if any benefit to
the efforts to control and eradicate bovine TB from the U.S.
It should also be recognized that a testing requirement for native cattle that have never been exposed to Mexican
origin cattle or dairy cattle as a condition for interstate movement for cattle shows and for sale as breeding stock
may discourage the development of an alternative, low risk source of eventing cattle.
RESOLUTION:
United State Animal Health Association (USAHA) urges the United States Department of Agriculture Animal and
Plant Health Inspection Service (USDA APHIS) to implement a regulation requiring that all bucking bulls, roping
steers and bulldogging steers be tested negative for tuberculosis within 12 months prior to any interstate movement. Except that the movement of animals out of the birth herd would be exempt from the TB test provided that
an accredited veterinarian places a statement on the Certificate of Veterinary Inspection that the birth herd has
had no exposure to Mexican cattle or dairy cattle.
Furthermore, USAHA urges USDA APHIS to implement a regulation requiring that an official Certificate of
Veterinary Inspection accompany the aforementioned cattle that required a test and the test date of the last negative tuberculosis test for each animal is indicated on the Certificate.
