Young Entrepreneur Dragons’ Den 2015 Competition celebrated its 21st year!
The competition is for students in grades 7 to 12 and is a joint initiative between
School District No. 23 Career Life Programs, Okanagan Economic Development
Commission, and Okanagan College School of Business.

The product is a standard deck of 52+2 cards,
with the addition of ice breaking, conversationprompting questions. Complete with a full array
of questions, these cards range from thought
provoking to ludicrous. Weather resistant and
printed on recycled paper, these cards are ecofriendly and sturdy enough for any adventure!
Basecamp Cards has a wide target market that
began with travellers in hostels and spread to
family game night, outdoor ed programs, coffee
shops and gift stores. Also with the addition of
specialized playing cards in the future such as
Girls Night Out or Family Pack, they’re hoping
to further expand their market as well as encourage repeat buyers.

Okanagan Lures
Okanagan Lures produces custom, eco-friendly fly
fishing lures at a fair price. Fishing enthusiasts are
their target customer. They started making hand
made fishing lures for fun in a small workshop.
They quickly realized that their lures were special
and they began their research on how to build the
right lure for local lakes. Due to their success in
catching fish with their custom made and custom
painted lures, they decided to enter the Young Entrepreneur Dragons’ Den competition. They felt
that this was a great way to explore the world of
business and entrepreneurship. The boys are environmentally conscious and work hard to leave a
small carbon footprint behind them.

fresh organic fruits and vegetables right out of their home,
store, or restaurant. They give consumers this opportunity
through a system of aquaculture called aquaponics. Aquaponics is a form of aquaculture in which the waste produced by farmed fish or other aquatic animals supplies nutrients for plants grown hydroponically, which in turn purify the water. After purchasing one of their pretroubleshot/perfected systems, customers will be growing
in no time with very little effort and maintenance.

experiences in Canada. Not charging students exorbitant prices
like other agencies, IES offers the most developed services from
local Canadian cities. Their assistance for students starts from as
far out as six months before their planned arrival in Canada.
These services will be covered throughout their entire school
year. By connecting the local students and the international
students in Canada, they have also designed a brand new learning method--Kelowna Education Club. It’s one of the IES
services that provides two types of services for both local and
international students.

stressful and expensive. Planning, decorating, shopping and
keeping guests entertained can be difficult. If only there was
a business that made all of this easier for a good price … oh
wait there is! "A Piece of Cake Parties" will do just that!
They make planning a party A Piece of Cake. Busy parents in
need of party help will benefit from their service. They
joined Dragons' Den because they wanted to get business
experience and thought that they had a great idea to pitch.

Vakers The Vakery is an all natural, vegan bakery. It
widens the spectrum of food options for those who are
vegan or who have other restrictions such as food allergies.
Vakers strives to promote healthier eating, and a positive
lifestyle through our products. At The Vakery it is their goal
to provide options to those who are making an attempt to
eat better and cleaner, and to also include those who suffer
from allergies.

Breakfast Buddies sell chocolate and syrup
waffles in the morning and at lunch in the DRK multipurpose
room every Wednesday. And they sell them on Fridays at the
secondary school shop along with other special selling days.
The team meets the night before to ensure the waffles are nice
an fresh for the next day. Half a chocolate waffle sells for $1.00
and a syrup waffle sells for 75¢.

THE RCMP JEAN MINGUY MEMORIAL
RCMP YOUTH ACADEMY IN VERNON, BC
The RCMP Jean Minguy Memorial Youth Academy was held at the Vernon Army Camp, Vernon BC., on Sunday April
26th, 2015 through to Saturday May 2nd, 2015. The Youth Academy is dedicated to Cst Jean Minguy, who lost his life while on
duty in June 2005. Cst Minguy was an integral part of the RCMP Youth Academy, acting as both a facilitator and a volunteer.
The RCMP, in partnership with Vernon School District No. 22 Career Programs, have designed this work experience
program for students aged 16-18 (as of April 1st, 2015), who are interested in police sciences or law enforcement as a potential
career. Our students spent one week participating at the Vernon Army Camp. Students had to complete an application form, pass
a fitness test, criminal and driving record checks, be in good academic standing, have a good attendance record in school and
display a willingness to work. They had to be non smokers and they required school staff recommendation.
Students received instruction and lectures on Law, Criminal Code, Police Defence Tactics, Traffic Studies, Physical Training
and a variety of other topics. They were involved in a great deal of role playing scenarios and were required to work in a team capacity. The camp was an excellent learning experience and extremely challenging both mentally and physically!

KELOWNA CULTURE CONNECTION
KELOWNA CULTURE CONNECTION 2015 - OKM
Monday, April 20th to Friday, April 24th!
The Kelowna Culture Connection is a partnership with Kelowna Museums, the Kelowna Art
Gallery, the Rotary Centre for the Arts and School District No. 23. The connection among the
visual arts, theatre, and heritage were alive last spring at the Kelowna Art Gallery , Rotary Centre
For The Arts , and Kelowna Museums . Each organization provided a stimulating two-hour
session that included a hands-on project. The goal was to expose students to the Kelowna
Cultural District and the Arts in Kelowna through workshop participation. .
The following sessions were filled by students from DRK, KLO, RMS, KSS & OKM:
Kelowna Art Gallery – Shifting Perspectives
This tour included a visit to the two exhibitions Art in Action, and Ann Kipling: The Falkland
Drawings: a thirty-five year survey. Students also took part in a printmaking activity.
Rotary Centre For The Arts – Theatre Lighting and Theatre Sound Workshops
This workshop was for theatre students and was a fun and insightful way for students to make
meaningful connections with the local arts and culture community through learning about a
career in theatre lighting and sound.
Kelowna Museums – Heritage and Culture Workshop
Exploring and connecting with Kelowna’s Cultural District through an historic walking tour and
a hands-on cultural activity.

Students had the opportunity to investigate several different Careers within the
RCMP/Police Force on Thursday, April 23, 2015!
The conference offered the following workshops to students: Emergency Response Team &
Police Dog Services, Fitness Pare Testing, Forensic Identification Services, General Investigation
Section and Traffic Enforcement & Analysis.

The Find Your Fit event featured skilled occupations that are projected to be in-demand in B.C. over the next ten
years. Students had a chance to experience interactive stations (50 minutes) and try some of the skills related to the indemand occupations. Students were then linked to resources to help them chart their path into that occupation …

CAREERS IN HEALTH & TECHNOLOGIES
The Careers in Health & Technologies
Conference at KGH provided students with an
opportunity to investigate careers in the area of
health and technology within a hospital setting.
From 9:30 am –to 2 pm, students heard presentations from the following professions: Cardiology
Technician, ICU Nurse, Respiratory Therapist,
Laboratory Technologist, General Nursing,
Pharmacist, Speech Pathologist, Radiology
Technologist, Psychiatric Nursing, Dietitian,
Orthotics/Prosthetics, Social Worker, Physician
(Hospitalist) and Physio/Occupational Therapist.
50 students from around the district, in grades 11
and 12, enrolled in sciences and planning on
post-secondary training in the medical field,
participated in this conference. The day consisted
of interactive hands-on activities, a tour of many of
the hospital departments, and a question and
answer period.

Conference at KGH on Friday, February 27th, 2015.
INTRODUCE A GIRL TO ENGINEERING
On Tuesday, February 10, 2015, female students in grades 10 and 11 had the opportunity to explore the
University of British Columbia and find out what it's like to be an Engineer. They met female engineering
students and highly skilled faculty as well as toured the research labs to find out what engineers do.

designed to introduce secondary school students and the
general public to a variety of post-secondary education
options, career changes, new employment opportunities,
and labor market information to assist with career planning.
This is a free event for students. Over 300 students from
Central, George Elliot Secondary School, Kelowna
Secondary School and Mount Boucherie attended at
Prospera Place on Monday, February 23, 2015.
Close to 200 grade 11 & 12 students participated in Experience OC on Thursday, February 12, 2015. Students had the
opportunity to walk a day in the life of an OC student. Students pre-registered for classes of their choice and heard a little about
each from the instructors. Students also had the opportunity to tour the college campus. Workshops were offered in the

This year there are 18 (17 boys and 1 girl), graduating students 2 of which where MBSS transfers. The ITA AST
exam will be written on June 22. The wrap up barbeque will be held the same day, celebrating with District,
School and Community Partners.
OPPORTUNITY FAIR ON MAY 28, 2015
KSS welcomed 22 post secondary schools and training facilities who set up tables of informative literature, brochures and
hands on activities for the students to check out.

UBCO Field Trips - Their goal this year was to increase the number of fieldtrips they offered in order to create local opportunities
and awareness. This year they had 28 classes attend 19 fieldtrips.
GRAD TRANSITION PRESENTATION DAY - On April 28th, KSS had their largest MAP day yet. They had 306
students present to 55 community members and 110 teachers and CEA’s to make the spring event a great success. It brought the total
number of participating students to 506 for both Presentation Days this year, (December 2014 and April 2015).

PROJECT PLACEMENTS
A Project Placement is an opportunity for students in School District No. 23 to gain work experience hours in the community. In most cases, it involves the student during out-of-school hours where they attend training to prepare for the
event/placement. Students are provided with a community mentor and in the end are evaluated on their involvement.
CANDY STRIPERS / HEALTH CARE CADETS
The Candy Striping/Cadet tradition is a wonderful community experience for our students. Students volunteer their time as Candy Stripers or
Health Care Cadets from September to June, working at seniors’ homes and Kelowna General Hospital. They help with many projects
including assisting during the supper meal and bringing fresh water to rooms. Senior residents at care homes and Kelowna General Hospital
very much look forward to spending time with young people. This experience often leads students into a career in healthcare.

YLW JUNIOR AMBASSADOR PROGRAM
YLW Junior Ambassadors welcome visitors to the city and respond to questions regarding the Kelowna International Airport and the community in general, maintaining a high level of professional customer service at all times. Rita Henderson, one of the Ambassador Coordinators
at YLW, is the mentor for Junior Ambassadors. She works with students to ensure their volunteer shits suit their schedules. Volunteer shifts
are four hours and flexible. This placement is ongoing and students can volunteer throughout the year, including the summer months.

International Airport. We are happy to report that Rita

FAT CAT FESTIVAL ASSISTANTS
The Kelowna Fat Cat Festival has been going on for many years. Under the direction of the Children’s Festival Society
members, School District No. 23 students volunteered to set up and work at various stations at the event. Dorothee Birker

“The Festival went so well. We had the most amazing volunteers this year coming from RSS, George Elliot, OKM and KSS
- there were 15 in total that came through your project listing and many of them worked the full two days (i.e. two shifts on
both days). We also had more students come through the Wheels program and with the Leadership group at RMS through
Melissa Harris, who is so unbelievably fantastic!”
“I had excellent feedback from the Activity Station captains on the energy, creativity and enthusiasm the students brought
to their volunteer roles. I also enjoyed interacting with the students while scheduling them and when they came to check in
for their duties. They were very flexible and amenable to making the best of their volunteer opportunity.”

Student volunteer stations included face painting, punk hairdos, art stations, and other fun and interactive sessions with the
many children attending the festival.

SASFY - SUMMER ARTS SCENE FOR YOUTH
The Summer Arts Scene for Youth is an organization passionate about Arts! Every year they offer a six day summer
arts school workshop event and this year we had the opportunity to create a SASFY Youth Mentor to help with their
event! Workshops included clothing design, culinary arts, musical theatre dance, painting, photography, drumming,
fibre arts, digitizing embroidery, stage management, story-telling, woodworking, graphic design, multi-media, sculpture, theatre workshop and voice.
Students learned to work as part of a team and gained experience in specific workshops and an art form which may be
of interest for future careers. They learned to work, at times,
under pressure or time constraints and to see a project through
to completion.

ART ADVENTURES SUMMER PROGRAM VOLUNTEER
Student volunteers worked under the supervision of the Public Programming Department at the Kelowna Art Gallery,
and Instructors of the Art Adventures 2015 program, as “Art Adventures Summer Program Volunteers”. The camp
was attended by students aged 3 - 11. Student volunteers assisted the instructors with camp activities during the
months of July and August. Students gained experience in facilitating and evaluating art activities. They took on the
role of teacher’s assistant, under the direction of the Instructor and Art Adventures Supervisor.
Students also learned the importance of a commitment to a project. They gained planning and organizational skills
and were a positive role model for students attending the camp. What a great experience!!!

“Camp OC” is a day summer camp for kids and teens in grades 2 to 9 facilitated through the Continuing Studies
Department at Okanagan College. Student volunteers assisted camp instructors with planned activities and
supervision of campers.
